Gimesia maris moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Gimesia maris, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. ~ Amkgp 💬 17:31, 15 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Joshua's Number9,

Thank you for creating Psychogenic shivering.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Hi Joshua. I see that you are an established editor here, so I'm going to practice good faith. However, I did notice that there was some copy/paste content on your newest article. Could you please consider revising it? Thank you.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Snowycats}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at Jaws (film). Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been or will be reverted.

Please ensure you are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Continued disruptive editing may result in loss of editing privileges. There is no reason to add a Cast section to this article, as there is already a Casting section that includes a list of the cast. Also, I fail to see how the threatening tone in your edit summary was either polite or appropriate. DonIago (talk) 19:56, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Protection on Wikipedia articles

edit

The article Protection on Wikipedia articles has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

rewrite of policy page, Wikipedia:Protection policy, not a notable subject, no sources

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hello. I had to revert your edits here because they didn't comply with the established style of the article which was written with British spelling and usage. However, I had not previously added the "Use BE" template as I should have done. For advice and guidance on writing styles, please visit WP:MOS, which you will find very useful as a new editor. Learning how to contribute to Wikipedia

edit

I imagine that some of the interactions you've had over your edits have been a bit bruising. I will give you the benefit of any doubt and assume you desire in good faith to contribute meaningfully to Wikipedia. In fact, I'm willing to make an effort to mentor you, if you're willing to be mentored, to help you learn how to edit Wikipedia well. You can post any question you have right here -- I've added this page to my watchlist and will see any changes that are made, by you or others.

I see three things that can help you be a lot more successful here. First, there is the matter of citations. Because anyone can edit Wikipedia, verifiability is essential. I've seen someone claiming to be a veteran of the USS Indianapolis have all his edits, in which he spoke from personal experience, reverted. That seems harsh, but it's actually necessary. We have no way to verify he's really who he says he is or that his memory is reliable, so we have no choice. So you need to find good sources for everything you add to an article. Your source for the edit to Ice age is actually on the right track and would probably have been accepted if it weren't for a different problem. Sometimes you can find good sources using Google Scholar; they tend to be published papers and are not always easy to read, but that's a skill that can be learned.

The other problem is that we use sources for information, but not for actual words. So if a source gives us some information, we can use it, but we have to rewrite it in our own words. This is really non-negotiable; Wikipedia could get shut down if it doesn't do everything possible to respect copyright. It's a legal issue. One way to rewrite in your own words is to write down the information in the barest way possible, such as an outline, then take a break, then come back and expand your outline into full sentences in your own words. You may change the order of the ideas, so long as the flow of information is still logical. There are various other ways to paraphrase a source that are acceptable. Be careful about close paraphrasing, which is where a word is changed here or there but the sentence structure remains; that's still on the wrong side of the line. So is pulling a sentence here and there but leaving the sentences identical to the original. I recognize this can be hard when a source expresses information really well or it seems like there are only a few ways to say the same thing. It takes practice.

Finally, there is concern that you may be using more than one active username. This is sometimes okay. I have two usernames at Wikipedia, but I stopped using the one long before I started using the other and have never gone back to using the old one, and this is permitted. It is also sometimes okay to have two usernames when you use one strictly for one kind of article and the other strictly for another kind. But, really, it would be better for you to retire one of the names. You can announce your intention to do so on both user pages and that should end the concerns.

As I said, feel free to post any questions here about how to best contribute to Wikipedia. --Kent G. Budge (talk) 22:10, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
