DYK for Samuel Fisk Green
editOn 3 August 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Samuel Fisk Green, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Samuel Fisk Green was a pioneering American missionary who founded Sri Lanka's first medical teaching hospital? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Replaceable fair use File:Massacre_ditch_batti_210901.jpeg
editThanks for uploading File:Massacre_ditch_batti_210901.jpeg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. howcheng {chat} 19:08, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Your valued help and guidance in the Tamil Brahmi article is much required
edit- Sir, greetings from N.Srinivasan (user: srirangam99). Sir, being interested in matters of art, and architecture, I chanced upon this newspaper link from my friend, which throws some new light and raises questions on whether (or not) the Tamil Brahmi script is older in origin that it is considered to be now. There is an entire article which appeared in "The Hindu" paper of (just) yesterday, i.e. 29th August, 2011.
- Sir, here is the link to the newspaper article.(http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/tamil-nadu/article2408091.ece). I have been so intrigued by the contents of the article and became so interested in the subject that I thought a major part of the article would deserve mention in the Wiki article on Tamil Brahmi i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_Brahmi. But as is the case with any inexperienced newby on wiki, I simply did not know how to suitably paraphrase the article. So what I have done (like an absolute idiot) is create a new para within the article titled "Recent findings and developments" and copied the entire article therein. The end-result is there for you to see, it is not at all looking good and it needs heavy editing so that the absolutely necessary content only needs to be retained with the waste-part needing to be deleted/pruned.
- I request you may kindly go through the article and help out. I thought my action was pretty amateurish, if not outright stupid. It certainly needs your mature touch. Srirangam99 (talk) 09:34, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sir, thank you very much for your supportive reply on my talk page (on Tamil Brahmi article). Looking forward to your expert action in that article soon and hoping to learn much about proper editing of wiki articles and positioning text/reliable material in articles. Srirangam99 (talk) 06:16, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- Once again, Sir, thank you for your reply on my talk page. Great to know that you are attending to the article separately.Srirangam99 (talk) 04:45, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hello Taps Sir, any progress in this article?? I am of course, completely mindful of the fact that you are quite busy with a lot of things on wiki. Thanks in advance. Srirangam99 (talk) 04:47, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Nice to meet you!
editThere seems to be a lot of one-sided articles around here, using outdated information, outright distortions and newspaper articles to advance certain viewpoints. My task, as I see it, is to provide the most comprehensive examination of a number of certain topics, using the most recent, verifiable and academic sources available. I know it seems that I'm editing a large number of articles at once, but I'm facing stiff opposition around here from a certain "old guard". Also, I'm working on the Dravidian articles and I have edited certain portions of them. My ultimate goal is to clean up articles on S. Asian peoples, languages and genetics so that people who read them will get the best of both worlds. Yours,Bodhidharma7 (talk) 02:25, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- I like the way you think. Maybe you can help me edit a few articles. I'm currently working with Andrew Lancaster on how to improve a certain article, but he doesn't seem to be around that much. Anyway, I don't want to edit anything without his consensus and/or the consensus of others. It's the R1a1 article. Maybe you can help? If you can, meet me on the talk page. Bodhidharma7 (talk) 20:00, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- OK, I will do what i can. Thanks Kanatonian (talk) 17:15, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

- I was a youngster living in Colombo during this period and have, for emotional reasons, not gotten involved in editing these articles. However I am slowly being drawn back and every now and then will put a toe in, just to test the water. It is comforting to me to find these articles populated by editors who can and will respond to my nit-picking. Carptrash (talk) 14:56, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
My copy editing mostly happens when I stumble across something that I feel needs touching up. I would guess that my writing on wikipedia has created more copy editing for others than it was cleared up. I tend to be rather informal (sometimes termed "unencyclopediac" or something) in my approach to editing, on occasion even using the dreaded humor, but if you have an article or two that you feel needs an eye, I can provide it. My reason for not editing much Sri Lanka content is that I lived there for 13 years, until I was 17, and love it so much that I had a difficult time even reading about things that happened after I left - or while I was there for that matter, much less writing about it. Plus, most of my editing comes out of my personal home library and I have few references to rely on. it has been good for me to meet you and to return, in spirit, to the Pearl of the Orient. Different names for Tamil
editMy post is removed. I do not know reasons. The first three names i.e., Agasthiyam, Podhigai Mozhi and Vaishnavam were used in very limited circles and meaning. But other names Then mozhi, Dravida Bhasha and Arava Bhasha are still in use and could be get confirmed. You can edit my post and allow it to the extent possible duly giving acceptable wordings.
I saw your comment on User_talk:TheMandarin on his action to revert removal of "Vithoba is the focus of the monotheistic, non-Brahmanical Varkari sect of Maharashtra and the Haridasa sect of Karnataka". I am sorry I could not understand exactly which part of the section are you objecting to? The "Worship" section elaborates the sentence and mentioning Vithoba without Varkaris is like mentioning Shiva without Shaivas. --Redtigerxyz Talk 18:10, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 23 January 2012.

Boom Boom Mattukaran
editHello. I just saw that you created an article named Boom Boom Mattukaran. I want to inform you that Adiyan article already exists and seems to be the same, but slightly different in content. Perhaps to redisrect the second to the one you created or do you have another solution or explanation? Cheers! --BiH (talk) 06:57, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
- Indian tribal and caste names can sometimes be confusing. Adiyan in the caste context is used in Northern Kerala to denote a tribe engaged in cultivation, whereas Boom Boom Mattukaran also known and Adiyan in Tamil Nadu are nomadic people not engaged in agriculture. They are not the same although in some context similar names are used. By the way Adiyan means enslaved so many people can be called by such a generic term. Kanatonian (talk)

File source problem with File:SSR.jpeg
editThank you for uploading File:SSR.jpeg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:30, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Speedy deletion nomination of Parava
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Parava, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. (See section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Wikipedia has standards for the minimum necessary information to be included in short articles; you can see these at Wikipedia:Stub. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
- It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Relangi Selvarajah(1978).jpeg
editThank you for uploading File:Relangi Selvarajah(1978).jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Stefan2 (talk) 18:10, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka
editDear Kanatonian,
Thank you for your contributions to the Wikimedia Projects. As an editor from Sri Lanka, you are warmly invited to join the official Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka and to subscribe to its mailing list, Wikimedia-LK. The user group currently includes volunteers from Wikipedia and other projects, from the English, Sinhala, and Tamil speaking communities. It is the Wikimedia-approved platform for editors from Sri Lanka to enable wider collaboration, for both online and offline projects. With your support, we hope to organize cross-project content improvement drives as part of online projects, as well as organize in-person edit-a-thons, training sessions, photowalks, and other such activities, in the near future. The ultimate goal(s) of these initiatives is to improve the overall coverage and quality of topics relating to Sri Lanka, as well as encourage new editors to join the Wikimedia community, while simultaneously empowering and retaining our existing team of editors. There are no mandatory obligations for members who choose join the community, other than the usual editing rules for online projects, and the friendly space policy for in-person projects. You may also (or instead) subscribe to the mailing list, where any member could initiate discussions with volunteers across projects, notify members of events and meetings, stay up to date with competitions, organize your own events, and so on. See you on board, and Happy Editing! | |
