Hi Keilana, I'm back and caught up with email. I'd love to take you on your offer to teach me the ropes on editing properly including referencing, and use some of any other editing tools. I'm excited about contributing to the WikiProject Women Scientist. IF we are in close timezone I can do Skype, Google hangouts or other, let me know what works best for you. Thanks again for your time and generosity! Cheers! Sylvia slv 19:54, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Re Ann Bishop
editFirstly congratulations on getting this article up to GA standard. That takes a LOT of work. Well done. I have made a few minor changes to the article since which I hope you wont mind too much.
One minor niggle: In English the semicolon is similar in function to the comma. It is not (as far as I know) supposed to be used to join two (or more) sentences into a single sentence. That instead is the function of a colon or a conjunction.
Example:
'The cat sat on the mat; the dog joined it there.'
This is more properly
'The cat sat on the mat: the dog joined it there.'
An alternative is
'The cat sat on the mat and the dog joined it there.'
As I (currently) understand the use of a semicolon it is used as an alternative to a comma but can also be used to separate subordinate clauses within a sentence. The distinction here is between subordinate clauses which may separated by a semicolon and sentences which can be joined by a colon. The initial letter of the phrase following a semicolon should be in lower case while that following a colon may be either in upper or lower case.
The uses of semicolons and colons may differ considerably between languages and have VERY different uses in programming. It also is quite possible that English is not your first language: if this is the case please accept my apologies.
I'm probably sounding like a 'Grammer Nazi' here which I'm not usually. Lord knows I make enough 'mistooks' myself (typos are my speciality). However the misuse of a semicolon is (sadly) common and IMHO detracts from an article.
Please keep up the good work. DrMicro (talk) 14:12, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Addition:
According to WP the asyndeton is an use of the comma to coordinate separate sentences and is an exception to the usual rule governing the use of commas. Don't you just love WP :)
DrMicro (talk) 14:27, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hey DrMicro, thank you so much for this! As it turns out, while spelling is my strong point, punctuation is a bit hit or miss for me. Thanks again! :) Best, Keilana|Parlez ici 17:41, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Tea House New Users help
editHello Keilana, I am a new user and would like your help. A user has started demanding an article layout be changed according to his desire against the vote of everyone else who has reverted the changes. It is really odd. I am a new user and have no idea how to handle the situation. And is this type of thing a regular occurrence? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_people_who_have_been_called_a_polymath
I am also updating the page of Patrick M. Byrne which has extremely confusing Talk page requirements.Bhalluka (talk) 18:42, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Karolin Luger, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gymnasium (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Okay, have listed this at Peer Review as I felt like it was a bit awkward. Looks better now. Do you want to get stuck in and help and be a co-nom or find another one to work on together..either way is ok..Only thing is, I think I probably prefer the simpler layout of the referencing for Canis Minor as it is now as opposed to Leo Minor. Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:35, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Cas, I'd love to get involved in this one! I'll do some work on it today and this weekend - whatever you want for the references is fine, I'll go with whatever you've got. I did notice that there's some Harvard-style and some full citations, I assume you want the full citations? I'll be going back to university this week so I'll be able to get some non-Western mythology sources in there soon. (That all said, after this one I'd love to work with you on more constellations, I've got big plans for them in 2013!) Keilana|Parlez ici 18:15, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- My original rule is that I'll use a harvard style if I have a book with different pages that I am using for different segments of text. Hence the one book with refs to different bits of it, with the full book ref at the bottom. I find this the most straightforward in appearance yet allows me to be exacting.....Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:59, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, that works for me. :) I've watchlisted the PR, are you thinking of taking it to FAC as soon as that's concluded? Keilana|Parlez ici 21:03, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

- Oh no, whatever are we going to do? ;) I'd love to collab on Procyon after/while we do CMi! Especially since there's such a lovely example all laid out for us... Keilana|Parlez ici 06:49, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

- Hmm, looks good, I'll try to start some work on that once I've gotten through this pile of CMi sources. I'm quite serious about doing them all for GA/FA; I burned out on my own but company makes it quite doable! I figure, they're articles in practically every Wikipedia, they're on the vital list...it's a pretty important project. :) Btw - I found several non-Western astronomy sources in my library, plus one more Greek myth that I typed up but my computer ate. So more coming on mythology in the next couple days. Keilana|Parlez ici 16:38, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

- True, I think I'll burn out WAY more slowly with company. I'm adding in the prominence information on CMi and the rest of my online sources. One of the two non-western astronomy sources came in from ILL today so I'll probably swing by there and start in with that tomorrow, if that's alright. Go team! Keilana|Parlez ici 03:23, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- I'd be willing to help too on some of the more important constellations, such as Perseus (constellation). StringTheory11 (t • c) 04:42, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Right - we can try and figure next candidate to work on.......Orion (constellation) was one which I figured out a way of detailing out all the stars and things without it being too listy (one source did it by region and hence I've divvied up the Orion_(constellation)#Notable_features section into belt , head, club etc. Still needs a stack of reorganising and I fear the mythology of the main pattern could be...ummm...huge. I did have a hankering for Canis Major (done one dog, may as well do its chum)....Bootes we've had a bit of a go at but it's also huge....it'd be nice to do Pegasus to pair up with Andromeda, or Corona Borealis (maybe get both crowns on the mainpage as a double-header..). Or plough through the zodiac constellations, I'd be up for that. I also buffed Circinus (constellation), Pictor, Pyxis and Phoenix (constellation) for DYK so far - all of these are pretty small so are good starters for FAC just to get us used to them...I find I'm still finding my feet a bit with these articles...but then again they can be a bit boring...while the biggies have lots of cool things in them.....given I live in Oz I am lean a bit to southern hemisphere thingies......oh but there's also Eta Carinae...and Procyon...and Canopus and Rigel.....damn, spoilt for choice....So we can measure communal enthusiasm and take it from there....Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:18, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- StringTheory, it'd be *awesome* to have your help! I'm really keen on doing the other Andromeda myth constellations (Perseus, Cetus, Cassiopeia, and Cepheus). There's a ton of interesting features in all of them and I think it'd be nice to have that little suite done. But I'm up for whatever, I plan to get to all of them at some point so it's just a matter of order. :) Keilana|Parlez ici 21:41, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassadors update
editHi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.
You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.
Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.
If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.
- Please do these steps as soon as possible
First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.
Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:
Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).
After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)
As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.
- Communication and keeping up to date
In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:
- The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
- The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
- If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
- Ambassador training and resources
We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)
Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.
The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.
Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

editHey! I saw you in the signpost, and I remembered from when I reviewed Andromeda. How is your long-term project going with all of the constellations? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:38, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hey! Good to hear from you again! It's actually going pretty well, I got Casliber into writing them as well and he's done a few. I finished Auriga (constellation) and Aries (constellation) before I took a break - burnout and my first semester at university and all that. Now I'm doing Canis Minor with Cas and it's going great! How have you been? Keilana|Parlez ici 02:15, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hah, I know about burnout. Every so often I try some big topics, and although I usually get them done (newest one being 2002 Pacific typhoon season), they're quite gruesome and take a lot out of me! Nice work with those other constellations. I've been busy IRL, which oddly makes me more productive on here. Since I have less time, I spend it more wisely on content building, and on stuff I know I can't just finish in a day. Congrats on the first semester of university, keep that up! When you get all of the constellations to GT, I'll be the first to support :) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:45, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- Ooh, nice job on the typhoons! I'm totally fascinated by meteorology but don't know nearly enough about it. Hit me up if you ever want me to take a look at a GAN/PR/FAC/whatever. I get that counterintuitive productivity effect - I also tend to procrastinate by working on content, so the more homework I have, the more I write. Thanks for your stellar support, I'll definitely let you know when we get through all 88. Last I checked there's a few dozen left... ;) It may be awhile! editHi Keilana! Hope all is well. I wanted to let you know that the WikiWomen's Collaborative has recently underwent renovations to make it visually more attractive and easier to find resources. I'd love for you to be involved - since you are a founding member, of course. You'll find resources about getting involved in blogging, Facebook, and more. I also encourage you make an introduction, which is easy to do with a click of a button. I'm moving back to volunteering at the end of the month, and I really hope the project can continue to thrive and grow with volunteer support. See you there, i hope! Interested in helping ambassador a molecular biology course?
editHi, Keilana, I had a look at your OA profile, and was wondering if you'd be interested in helping me to OA a section of Molecular Biology for this semester (course officially starts right now). The course pages are here: Section 81 and Section 82. Right now I am the only one for both sections. I think ideally I could recruit three others, for two OAs per section -- then the work would be spread out and pretty easy, I think. It's not a whole lot of work, but the professor is not an experienced Wikipedian, and I do try to help her not only with answering student questions, but also with evaluations -- just checking to make sure the students did the assignments. Please let me know if you are available. Thanks! Klortho (talk) 05:21, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

editMeant to let you know that I'm helping a bit with the wikipedia part of a course on encyclopedias (including early European ones in Duke's rare books collection) being given by Mattia Begali in the classics dept. Help with a tedious task?
editHi, I've just assigned all the students to groups, and created a "groups" table in each of the course pages (here and here. Now I'd like to create each group page, using this one as a template. Do you think you could do that? It's a little tedious because you have to make sure the "81" and "82", and other bits of data, are correct for each one -- 13 pages altogether.
If you need help, could you solicit User:Serendipodous? If you are too busy, let me know and I will do it.
Feel free to amend the group template if you think anything is missing. Thanks! Klortho (talk) 04:45, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
- Had to finish up some reading before I got to this and now it's 1 AM and I can't be trusted to do it right. I should get it done before noon tomorrow; I have some free time. Keilana|Parlez ici 07:11, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 January newsletter
editSignups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader ( Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:
- 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score for an article, with the good article Hurricane Gordon (2000). Again, this is a repeat of last year!
- Buggie111 (submissions) was the first to score for a did you know, with Marquis Flowers.
- Spencer (submissions) was the first to score for an in the news, with 2013 Houphouët-Boigny stampede.
- Status (submissions) was the first to score for a featured list, with list of Billboard Social 50 number-one artists.
- Adam Cuerden (submissions) was the first to score for a featured picture, with File:Thure de Thulstrup - L. Prang and Co. - Battle of Gettysburg - Restoration by Adam Cuerden.jpg.
Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.
This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:
- Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
- Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
- HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.
Also, a quick mention of The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Wikipedia Course: Women Scientists
editDear Keilana,
I am currently in Mattia Begali's course on Wikipedia and I am very interested in working on one of the biographies included in your project on women scientists. I have a science major and would appreciate any guidance you have.

Moustache team
editHey Kei, me and a few male Turkish Wikipedians did a good job for WP. Please check this new article: Women in Turkish politics. Best wishes for the exams at university and for life out of college. (It exists, I have been proving that since long time... :-) --E4024 (talk) 15:52, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- Bonjour Kei. I hope you saw my response to you in my TP. I would be very happy to receive your contributions to the said article. In the meantime we also opened Turkish women in sports and the next step is Turkish women in literature. (I am proud of the Turkish women but they could lend me and other moustached -or not- Turkish editors working on these articles in WP. :-) Seems like they are busy in politics, sports and literature etc and the Turkish men are trying to write down their girl power in WP all alone... Best. --E4024 (talk) 11:53, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Canis Minor and Procyon
editIt struck me that while you had been searching for stuff on Canis Minor and entering cutlural material there, that dumping some Procyon-only material into Procyon would be prudent to avoid re-researching it later on. I am starting to get intrgiued about some of these stars..Procyon just starting tl leave the main sequence etc....and maybe it'd be a good collaboration sooner rather than later. Structure of article should be similar to Sirius maybe..? Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:40, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's true, I'd love for none of that to go to waste. I'm fascinated with Procyon and I'd love to start doing some work on it. I have started to get involved in Circinus and Perseus, maybe we can start doing Procyon a little and push it through FAC after we get the other two? Keilana|Parlez ici 04:41, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, Circinus is looking near for GA nom. I was n't talking about actively doing Procyon jut yet, just if you had a book or article and had something right in front of you, just stick it in and we can do later. Casliber (talk · contribs) 19:53, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Agreed, if you don't mind holding off for a day or two, I've got a few things I want to add. Maybe Monday for GAN? (Hey, WikiCup question, do you get a fraction of the points if it's a collab? Just wondering.) Keilana|Parlez ici 16:02, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
- No they don't bother with fractions - I figure that often the collab articles are trickier or longer, and we're supposed to be promoting collaboration anyway. Monday sounds good. Circinus looks to be within striking distance of GAN, but still a little slim (not surprising really as it is pretty tiny..). Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:50, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, even JSTOR and my other trusty databases are failing me. It seems that pretty much everybody up to Lacaille ignored it. But I still have some interesting DSO tidbits to add, those will be coming tonight (US Central time). I can nom when I get up Monday morning - your Monday evening I believe? Since this is my first message ever on Wikipedia, please let me know if this came through okay. Also, please note that I originally set up my user page as jgould140 but couldn't get into it, so I created a new user page under jgould1400 (which BTW is the page you used for sending me your message, so that worked fine). However, I see that on our course's page, I'm still grouped with my partner (cdunca) as "jgould140". Is there a way to change this so there's no confusion?
Thanks in advance for your assistance,

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter
editRound 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.
Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:
- Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
- Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
- Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.
Other contributors of note include:
- Sven Manguard (submissions), whose Portal:Massachusetts is the first featured portal this year. The featured portal process is one of the less well-known featured processes, and featured portals have traditionally had little impact on WikiCup scores.
- Sasata (submissions), whose Mycena aurantiomarginata was the first featured article this year.
- Muboshgu (submissions) and Wizardman (submissions), who both claimed points for articles in the Major League Baseball tie-breakers topic, the first topic points in the competition.
- Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), who claimed for the first full good topic with the Casting Crowns studio albums topic.
Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...
March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!
A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. Good luck! I'd also like to talk to you about what would help me work harder in Wikipedia. Thanks. I'll see you on our adoption page. Just type the message, "I'm here" on the adoption talk page so I know your listening. Then we'll have a long and quite complicated discussion. Thanks. RaidenRules! (talk) 22:54, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Canopus
editHello
I notice you added some detail to the Carina page on mythology associated with the star Canopus. As it was on the star in particular, rather than the constellation as whole, I'm thinking it would be better placed on the Canopus page.
What do you think? Would you have any objection to it being moved? Moonraker12 (talk) 21:38, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Moonraker, I think that all of it should definitely also appear in the Canopus article. I'm not sure all of it should be removed from the Carina article, though I'm not adamantly against it, maybe just the major mythologies should be kept (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Greco-Roman, Aztec, and Maori)? It's a hard balance to strike and I do think the focus of the article should be on the constellation, but I don't want to neglect mentioning Canopus and how it fits in. Keilana|Parlez ici 03:13, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, I've copied the content over to Canopus#Other names and jiggled that page a bit; I've also copied some of it to a page on Atutahi that I found. I've also roughed out a summary for the Carina page, but will hold off posting it until you've seen it. What do you think? Moonraker12 (talk) 16:59, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

wikipedia class
editHi Keilana, How are you? I am writing to you because I have some questions about the class I am teaching.
-Enrollment: I assume that the next step it will be to have my students enrolled in the class. I see that they need "a token provided by your instructor or one of the ambassadors for your course". What exactly is this "token"?
-Schedule/feedback: If it possible I would like that my students could get feedback from other editors. What strategy do you suggest? When do you should post a first version of their entry? Where should they post it? (sandbox?) Students picked an entry and they collected the bibliography. The last day of class is April 24th. Please let me know and thanks again for you help! Images
editHi Keilana, I'm having a number of problems adapting to all this Wikipedia-speak and Wikipedia processes and really need some help -- most immediately I need help with downloading images. I'm merely trying to download some simple images that are already on Wikipedia Commons (and also on Wikipedia pages) -- and in fact I'm trying to download the images directly from Wikipedia Commons, yet this is taking a ridiculous amount of time and still no luck. I have to say that the Wikipedia instructions are extremely unhelpful. Please help me out. I may be over 50, but I'm also an Ivy League grad and have been a lawyer in high tech fields for over 20 years, so I doubt I'm wrong about Wikipedia's problematic formats and instructions. Sorry to bother you, but this is really frustrating. I'm spending a large sum of money on tuition to learn molecular biology and not to be a Wikipedia expert. Please help. Thanks, Jim Jgould1400 (talk) 05:15, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 March newsletter
editWe are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.
Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr ( Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare ( Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus ( Keilana (submissions) and Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John ( Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.
Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.
A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. feedback wikicourse
editHi Keilana, Thank you so much for giving Mike feedback! really appreciated. The other students should post a first draft by april 3th. They should also upload an illustration by april 10th. The semester will be over on april 24th.
I am trying to figure out the best strategy for the other 12 students. If I understood it correctly the Guild of Copy Editors that you suggested to Mike is an option only when the article is already in the mainspace. However, the other 12 students are not familiar with Wikipedia as Mike. Therefore, ideally I think it would be better to have them to post first on their sandbox and having ambassadors giving them feedback first. But I don't want to take advantage of you and the other ambassador. I don't know how much time do you have. Please, let me know what do you think about that and which strategy do you suggest. Thanks! Mbegali (talk) 01:35, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks!! I want to be sure that I understood correctly. My students will post their articles on their sandbox tomorrow. Then, they will enroll in the wikipedia course page. Here, they will "add an article". At this stage, they will add the link to their sandbox. At the end of they will add the link to the real article (the article in wikipedia). Let me know if I understood correctly. Thanks!

Diberri's Tools Question
editHi Keilana, I have to use Diberri's Template Filling tool for citing journal articles using a pubmed ID for my Wikipedia article, XRCC4, for the Molecular Biology class at JHU. I have looked up the instructions and they are not clear. Can you please help explain the step-by-step instructions or provide a link with clearer instructions? Do I begin by choosing "cite journal" under the templates pull down menu? When I choose this method, it lets me fill in all the journal specifics but only creates a named inline reference. If I use Diberri's correctly, would the reference start with DOI as a link? Thank you for your help! DYK for Death during consensual sex
editOn 30 April 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Death during consensual sex, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that contemporary reports claimed that French President Félix Faure died receiving fellatio and his penis had to be surgically removed from his mistress's locked jaw? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Death during consensual sex. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. A favor -Environmental law articles ready for preliminary review
editHi Keilana. I see that you're an online ambassador. I'm the Professor for Aaron Frank's environmental law class, and while you're not signed up for my course, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at any or all of the articles my students are working on. One of the aspects of this sort of course is that students understand that they are putting their work out before the wikipedia community for review. In the past, there hasn't been that much activity on their pages as they were working on them. I was hoping that if you were willing, you could take a look. If not, no problem.
The students now have draft articles in mainspace and are starting to review each other's articles, and they could also use a preliminary review by an experienced Wikipedian in this area. If you get a chance, ideally sometime before Thursday or so, please take a look at the following list of articles and leave feedback on the talk page:
- Sierra Club v. Babbitt* Federal exemptions for hydraulic fracturing
- Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill

DYK for Blue Qur'an
editOn 7 May 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Blue Qur'an, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Blue Qur'an is written in gold and silver on parchment colored with indigo? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Blue Qur'an. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

WikiCup 2013 April newsletter
editWe are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place Casliber (submissions) and second place Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.
The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.
A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Significant issue
editHi Keilana, I have a significant issue affecting a Wiki educational assignment that I would like to discuss with you offline. How can we do this? I'd like to discuss this by phone.
Thanks Jgould1400 (talk) 04:20, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
- In the meantime, is there a way I can send you an email? Jgould1400 (talk) 04:34, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
- I realize that this article is the subject of an educational assignment but it also is a Wikipedia article where normal talk page guidelines apply. Hence the most straight forward way to discuss improving this article is on the article's talk page and not through private e-mails. Jgould1400 and Cdunca12 have done a great job of expanding this article. However as explained here and here, I believe the {{Inadequate lead}} banner still applies. I have also made some specific suggestions here and here which have not been adequately responded to. Boghog (talk) 20:08, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
- For what it's worth, the assignment ends tomorrow - I'll drop a comment on the talk page for the rest. Keilana|Parlez ici 21:26, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along. Possible Adminship
editHello! I am andrewrp, and I would like to get active editing Wikipedia again. Currently, as well as in the past, I have done article anti-vandalism work, as well as CFD's using NPwatcher. I have taken a brief hiatus from Wikipedia to work on other projects, but would like to start working again. In addition to my anti-vandalism, I would also like to get more involved on actually editing and improving articles, as I see this issue as a sort of weak point for me. My reasons for desiring administratorship are numerous. In my brief time I have been back here (though I occasionally monitored), there seems to be large backlogs in AIV, Speedy Deletion, as well as page protection. I have a pretty flexible schedule right now that would allow me to clear these backlogs when they become a problem. There also seems to be (not sure if this is the product of when I visit), a larger amount of vandalism then there was a while back. I realize I most likely am not ready for an administratorship yet. When I was getting started, I think I took my important position as a rollbacker and anti-vandalism watcher too lightly. I do feel, as well, I had not taken the time to thoroughly familiarize myself with various Wikipedia policies. As a result, I have gotten myself into various uncomfortable and very bad situations, which I feel could possibly jeopardize my candidacy. I would like to ask you if it would be possible to review my account and provide me with steps I may take as I return to editing that would help me not only become an administrator, but also help the Wikipedia community as a whole. Thank you, and all the best, Andrew AndrewrpTally-ho! 03:04, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

- @Ignocrates: I would be happy to mediate, just be aware that my specialty is science, not theology. :) Let me know if you need help. Best, Keilana|Parlez ici 03:05, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- That's fine. What we need is more logical thinking on this project. Thanks! Ignocrates (talk) 03:36, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- The more the merrier. Please feel free to review the sources used as well. I think in general it is agreed around here the more reliable are the reference sources, rather than the academic journal sources. If you can access the Anchor Bible Dictionary, also, to see if the author is in fact named either at the article itself, or in the list of contributors, that would be one less thing I would have to do later. By the way, considering this matter is also related to something which the arbitration committee is apparently accepting, I don't think any sort of formal or informal mediation is necessarily going to be useful, at least until the end of arbitration. Feel free to review the history of this article, the Ebionites article, previous arbitration and mediation efforts, etc. John Carter (talk) 23:35, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- @John Carter: and @Ignocrates: Okay, I'll take a look tonight and over the next couple days (fair warning - I'm dealing with health problems and have a lot on my plate, it may be Friday before I get a really good handle on it). I do want to clarify, would you rather I post my totally independent "3rd opinion" assessment of what I think, or do you want me to assess where the conflict is and try to step in and calm things down? They aren't necessarily mutually exclusive but unless I magically hit the middle ground that makes everyone happy with the former (and is highly unlikely) I'm going to end up being a disputant (albeit a really nice, polite, reasonable, detached one). Keilana|Parlez ici 23:57, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- My short-term goal in asking for mediation help is to be able to lay out the content issues in a logical way so that the reviewers at FAR can understand them. Some of them may be rather easily resolved in a calm atmosphere (e.g. adding content about Justin Martyr to the article), and we should try to resolve them. I believe the bigger issues - such as JC's stated desire to reduce this feature article to a stub and start over - are beyond the scope of mediation. You should also be aware that JC is in the process of filing for arbitration, an action which I support. The arbitration committee will want to know if further mediation efforts are likely to be fruitful. That's where your overall "3rd opinion" assessment is going to be especially important. Hope this helps. Ignocrates (talk) 03:00, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
- @Ignocrates: Okay, so unless John objects, I'm going to look through the article and the talk page dispute and lay out my understanding of what the conflict is and give some reasonable suggestions for how to resolve it. I hope I'm helpful even though my theological knowledge is limited. Best, Keilana|Parlez ici 15:20, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
- You may also want to read User:John Carter/Guidelines discussion to help make sense of the talk page. High quality sources, Encyclopedia pillar of wikipedia, and Current discussions which might relate to some proposed guidelines are particularly relevant. The point is to get rid of secondary sources and replace them with a limited, pre-approved list of tertiary sources, primarily religious dictionaries and encyclopedias. I think you can figure out for yourself what is going on here. Ignocrates (talk) 12:23, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
- You know, Ignocrates, I am at this point never even remotely surprised when you engage in blindly irrational, clearly prejudicial, misstatements of fact. It is, at this point, more or less expected from you. But at no point did I say anything remotely like I wanted to reduce it to a stub and start over. I realize your blind emotionalism, and perhaps pathological devotion to non-notable neo-Ebionitism as represented by the Ebionite Community/Ebionite Jewish Community, makes the possibility of your engaging in rational discourse on this subject unlikely at best, but would it really be impossible for you to at least once in a while make some effort to deal with realities, rather than your emotional overreactions to them? John Carter (talk) 19:04, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- Perhaps I misunderstood your intentions. I was responding to the following statements you made on the article talk page: "this article looks to me to be, basically, far far short of the standard of even a good article" and "what might be most required here is basically another total rewrite". Ignocrates (talk) 20:49, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- You clearly did - you have a longstanding history of seemingly jumping to hysterical conclusions about the conduct of others, including In ictu oculi on Dougweller's talk page, where you wanted to take him to ANI for disagreeing with you, and elsewhere. I stand by my first point, because the article seems to be basically the effort of one person with a rather clear and obvious history of POV problems regarding the broad topic of the Ebionites, and particularly the Ebionite Jewish Community/Ebionite Community, which apparently considers itself the “revival” of the original Ebionites, that person being you. You put this version of the article together in userspace, asking and apparently receiving few comments, and then requested, basically, a rubber stamp of your work. Following the usual procedure of developing the article in article space, there is a very good chance that it would have undergone more thorough review which might have resulted in some of the material being contested earlier. It is in fact not unreasonable to think that you sought to avoid any sort of outside review, possibly trying to game the system, by doing so. I repeat my basic point that the article does not seem to in any way reasonably comport to the existing standards of other encyclopedic content to any degree of quality. And by saying it needs rewrite my primary concern was that the structure of the article could, reasonably, be changed to conform to the standards of other existing reference articles, considering there is no clear MOS for religion yet. In that case, following the lead of other reference sources seems reasonable. You have a longstanding history of overreaction, Iggy, and emotionalism. Please make some apparent effort to overcome them and actually deal with the points made, rather than your own irrational conclusions about them, if you can. Thank you. John Carter (talk) 22:11, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- Please, refrain from insulting each other. It doesn't solve anything. I'm almost through reading everything and will post something tonight or tomorrow. Keilana|Parlez ici 19:57, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- Since you are back, I have to ask: where have I insulted anyone on this page? Otherwise, I'm not sure what you mean by "each other". Btw, we are still awaiting a post from you. Thanks. Ignocrates (talk) 18:17, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- You might wildly speculative and honestly fairly clearly wrong aspersions about my motivations, for a start. I was not referring to reference works per se, but highly regarded ones, which most reasonable people would realize means those which are still highly regarded. The way to etermine that is to check the reviews at the time of publication, and most major reference works get multiple lengthy reviews, and to determine in the relevant academic journals if those opinions are still held in high regard. Maybe if you had edited more than a half dozen pages in your life, you might have a better grasp of such things. Also, as I said on Nishidani's talk page, the purpose is primarily to come up with guidelines regarding "religious" topics which are either minority opinions in the outside world, opinions of minorities in the internal world of religion and belief, and opinions which had been held earlier, but are now not given much acceptance. Those topics are the essence of the six links I added at the bottom of the page. And I am truly curious about your recent concern for "defamation." None of us here are really supposed to be concerned about our reputations. That is an indication, sometimes, of some sort of COI. I remember, oh, someone telling me about the Ebionite webring. The "reputations," if any, of editors here on webrings, or anywhere else, is not considered an acceptable motivation, and never has been. I don't have the time to check up on that, but I would be interested in finding out if someone called Ovadyah or Ignorates was a frequently discussed topic on them, or a particularly frequent contributer there.
- Also, to Keilana, the recent proposal was made the way it was because the last previous proposal got derailed by two editors who have very strong religious opinions and are, unlike Ignocrates, rather widely known around wikipedia. It was to prevent the sometimes irrational comments of those editors, and editors like them, that I started it, effectively, by invitation. I do think that there is a good basis for thinking we should have some such guidelines, and if you think it would be useful to maybe discuss the proposal in the Signpost, feel free to do so. John Carter (talk) 20:39, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Both of you have made some backhanded comments at each other, I've had family in town and am trying to finish up an article for the Signpost, my comments on this are next on my list after the Signpost stuff. Keilana|Parlez ici 18:33, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 June newsletter
editWe are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.
Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, Casliber (submissions) and Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.
A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
