copyvio
editI see you have some questions about why your article was declined.
It was declined because it was almost entirely copied from other sources--in particular the eweb pages listed at the bottom. Wikipedia does not permit this. We care very much about copyright, and no content whatsoever may be added to wikipedia that has been previously published elsewhere, in print or on the web, unless it is public domain or released under a free license. This was not true of the sources you used. Newspapers and government documents are copyright (except for US government documents, but these were from Singapore, and carried a copyright notice at the bottom--even were there no notice, you must assume thatanything found on the web without a clear statement otherwise is protected by copyright.)
What you need to do is write the material from scratch, in your own words, using your own organization of the material . Avoid Close paraphrase just as much as direct copying. Use the sources only as references.
As reviewing administrator, I must warn you not to reinsert such copied material. If you do, you will be blocked, because the necessity of observing copyright is one of our most basic rules. DGG ( talk ) 02:40, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Information from my organisation
editHi DGG, thanks for reviewing and your comments. I would like to clarify that the information you see in the public domain was provided by my organisation and hence the words are similar in this Wikipedia content. I can assure you that there is no copyright infringement whatsoever since the words are from us anyway. In fact, the wordings on the wikipedia was vetted by the Principal of my educational institution, hence the similarity of content and word structure. The whole aim of our reflecting our educational institution on Wikipedia is so that the public can know about the school, it is however not a publicity or marketing stunt.
I would like to ask you to reconsider our article especially since I have seen article approved based on nothing more than their own websites.
- You are misunderstanding the nature of both how copyright works and how Wikipedia works. The pages you cited and took language from are clearly marked at the bottom with copyright notices such as "Copyright ©2012 Ministry of Education, Singapore. All rights reserved." It is unlikely the pricipal of a single school has the authority to suspend copyright protection on behalf of the Ministry, but even if they were we would need better verification of that than just your say so. More information of waiving copyright can be found at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Copyright infringement is the reason for the outright speedy deletion, but there are other issues.
- Wikipedia prefers that content be verified by reliable sources that are completely independent of the subject. This helps insure the neutrality of content. And that brings us to the other issue. The instant you post anything on Wikipedia it is not yours to comtrol any more. Articles can be edited by anyone at any time. The school will not be allowed to maintain its own page here, this is not a profile like on Facebook, it is an encyclopedia. This does not mean that it is impossible to have an article on this subject. Public secondary schools are generally considered notable enough for entries here, but no page is exempt from the copyright violation policy and new pages are routinely edited to make their tone appropriate for an encyclopedia. Beeblebrox (talk) 08:35, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
- And some additional advice. It is almost always much better to rewrite the article. Had you had the proper licensing for this, and even if the school were already in existence, I would have rejected the article as excessively promotional, so promotional as to warrant speedy deletion under WP:CSD G11.
- A Wikipedia article needs to be written like an encyclopedia article, not a press release--not praising the organization or person, not explaining their loft goals, or the merits of their plans and intentions.
- An article here must Include only material that would be of interest to a general reader coming across the mention of the subject and wanting the sort of information that would be found in an encyclopedia. Do not include material that would be of interest only to those associated with the subject, or to prospective students--that sort of content is considered promotional. Promotional writing is based on what the subject wishes to communicate to the public, but an encyclopedia article is based on what a reader will want to know. And the goal of an encyclopedia is to say things in a concise manner, which is not the style of press releases or web sites, which are usually more expansive.
- Specifically, for this particular content, the first paragraph on the purpose of the school is written in straight PR jargon, "students] may enter the school with a low self-concept and feeling diffident about their abilities at Secondary One, but will graduate at the end of their four-year journey as confident and youthful individuals, anchored in sound values and equipped with the vocational and life skills to succeed " -- This is promotional entirely. The concept is worth stating.but in some such neutral manner: "The program is designed so students whose previous education has not fully prepared them for secondary school will be able to gain confidence in their abilities, and succeed in a vocation." The section of the schools vision and mission is also promotional, but we typically extend a certain latitude here, if it is given as a direct quotation from a source. The section on the school logo is promotional language which I can best characterize as gobbledegook. I don't think it's even acceptable PR. The section on the school team contains such material as " Their decision to come on-board the school is motivated by their strong passion for working with N(T) students and making a significant difference in their lives." Not only is there no evidence for this, the adjectives especially make it out of place in anything but an advertisement. The section on the board of directors, most of them people who would not meet our notability standards, is inappropriate in any case: nobody except their own families cares to know such information. The section on the school curriculum is usually easy to write in a non-promotional manner, but your text has such material as " In addition, the school will adopt innovative pedagogies to strengthen the students’ literacy and numeracy skills through real-world, ICT-enriched learning contexts. A key cornerstone of the school’s holistic education is the approach to building the students’ character, with a strong focus on values education and strengthening their social and emotional competencies" This is an advertisement, not information, written in educational jargon. And it's not even a good advertisement: every single school in the world tries to do this. DGG ( talk ) 18:25, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Crest Secondary School, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
- It appears to be a clear copyright infringement. (See section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. However, even if you use one of these processes to release copyrighted material to Wikipedia, it still needs to comply with the other policies and guidelines to be eligible for inclusion. If you would like any assistance with this, you can ask a question at the help desk.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
