American English transcriptions

Hi, there! As someone knowledgeable in IPA and Wikipedia IPA conventions, perhaps you'd be interesting in contributing to this talk page discussion: Talk:American_English#Consistency of IPA phonemes for American English dialect pages. Wolfdog (talk) 16:59, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Irish dialect sources?

edit

Hi there! I've just been reading your amazing work on the Irish phonology page, and have noticed you've cited many different descriptive works for the various dialects. I'm currently working on some materials from the Doegen recordings and there's a handful of dialectic descriptions I haven't yet been able to lay hands on (I have a bunch already, but can't afford to buy any more and don't have institutional library access). I was wondering if you happen to have digital copies of any monographic dialect descriptions? In particular, I'm looking for any of the following studies:

  • de Burca 1958 (Tourmakeady)
  • Lucas 1979 (Ros Goill)
  • Mhac an Fhailigh 1968 (Erris)
  • Breatnach 1947 (Ring)
  • Sommerfelt 1929 (South Armagh)
  • Stockman 1974 (Achill Island)
  • Hamilton 1974 (Tory Island)

If you have any of these materials, I'll gladly provide my contact details (unfortunately I've forgotten my Wiki login details, so in the interim I'll try to dig out my login, or will set up a new account if I can't). Thanks very much in advance! 58.179.70.149 (talk) 09:18, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I don't have digital copies of any of those, only paper. You could check whether any of them has been added to archive.org, though I wouldn't hold my breath. —Mahāgaja · talk 09:23, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
All good, I just thought I'd ask. I've been able to lay hands on a number of dialect sources (I have copies of the monographs on Iorras Aithneach, Cois Fhairrge, Aran Islands, Rathlin, Dingle, Tangaveane-Commeen, Meenawannia, West Muskerry, and also a digital copy of Stockman and Wagner on the Irish of Tyrone), I'm just trying to expand to as many sources as possible so I can establish isoglosses using additional material beyond what's included in LASID. Thanks anyway! 58.179.70.149 (talk) 14:32, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Power abuse on Wiktionary

edit

Hello Mahagaja, and happy new year. I might have given you a heart attack with the title, but it's not about you :)

Yet again have I been blocked by the same admin (Fenakhay) who is extremely possessive on Arabic and Maltese entries. All I did was this edit - I invite you to judge whether it is vandalism.

My 2600+ voluntary edits have been awarded with being blocked for 1 year, cannot edit my talk page, cannot email anyone. I've only had negative interactions with this admin, who has a long record of unsubstantiated reverts and other tyranny - which is why I guess he needs to constantly delete his talk page which is clogged with complaints. (Use Internet archive if you wish)

The gist of my message is: Do you think I am being treated fairly? Synotia (moan) 18:39, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

FYI, the question of a Punic substrate in Maghrebi Arabic is not even that fringe, you can send our friend this for example. Synotia (moan) 14:29, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to participate in a research

edit

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
