St Andrew's Cathedral School

Hi Kid063, I was just wondering why you reverted the changes I made to this school's crest without talking to me first. Ideally the school crest used in the infobox should be just of the school crest, without repeating the name of the school. I feel the orginal one is inferior to the new one I uploaded as you are unable to see the detail of the crest, and the school's name in this image seems to dominate. Please let me know why you think the orginal is a better choice. Thanks! Loopla 01:52, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

OK I understand why you reverted it then. I just thought it would be nice to have a clear image of the crest as the school name and date of establishment is repeated multiple times through the article and i've noticed that the name and date are not on the school blazer (I have a relative at the school). I guess its your call since you have a better knowledge of the school then I do. Really appreciate your additions to the article as well, it needs a major clean-up and is constantly vandalised. Image Question

Hi Kid063, That is a good question!! Unfortunately i've also been wondering about the State Library images and can't give you an answer. Maybe ask User:GarrieIrons, he seems to know a lot about the use of images. Sorry I couldn't help! Loopla 06:13, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I came back to add this - I'm not that big a guru on images. Once I know what licence applies then I know what tag to put on. But as for working out what licence applies, I often get quite confused.Garrie 23:34, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Your question about the images at State Library comes down to this:

There are two works at question here: The photo, St Andrew's Choir School by Sam Hood, taken 1/12/1944, and the scanned image.

If you can get hold of the photo - it's now in the public doman and you would tag it with

{{PD-Australia}} — for published photographs where the creator has died at least 70 years ago, or photographs taken prior to 1955 (from Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Public domain).

The State Library claim copyright to the scanned image. I don't know that it would be a fair claim or not because as far as I can tell there has been nothing artistic done in scanning the image at the highest possible resolution. See Wikipedia:Public domain#Derived works and restorations of works in the public domain - as far as I can tell, they are claiming copyright but (in the USA at least!) their claim would be unlikely to be upheld in the courts.

If you were to upload an image, this would be the one to upload.

Whatever you do - be absolutely upfront about it. If you simply download and upload the same jpg it is trivial to identify that this is what has been done, so acknowledge where the image comse from.Garrie 23:19, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Non-Free rationale for File:SACS crest.jpg

I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under Non-Free content criteria but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a Non-Free rationale.
