Hi, I am glad to see a FAQ about the stats pages. However, is it possible to make some clarifications for those of us who are not very well versed in computers. For example, what is meant by "case sensitive?"

It might be worth mentioning that, whereas the date may change around 0:00 Zulu time, it's usually an hour or so later before the stats themselves change. (That may be just in my area, I don't know, but it can lead to some misreadings.)

Also curious is that I often go to a page multiple times when I'm thinking about how to word a change, but, often, the stats only shows 1 hit. Do the stats count individual hits, or just 1 per user? Other times, the stats jump dramatically, through no fault of my own, and I'm curious how to interpret this type of data.

I have many other questions, but most relate to that last one. The only other things I can think of right now are: can a similar tool be applied to images on commons, and: could a link to the FAQ sheet be placed on the stats pages?

Thank for your consideration. Zaereth (talk) 00:57, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Case sensitivity is determined by CAPITAL LETTERS (<--- example) and lowercase letters (<--- example). So, this is not the same thing as tHis, for instance.
The stats change probably relies on when the source data is published, see the FAQ for the link. I'm not positive about that, but it seems likely.
The stats count how many times a page request is loaded, or something like that. So if you use your browser's "back" function, it's probably relying on a cached version of that page and not requesting a new version. In any case, it most definitely does not count "1 per user".
Commons should have a link. See commons:MediaWiki:Histlegend and [1]. The problem is that most images are viewed on their local wikis rather than on Commons itself (Commons files are sort of "transcluded" on local wikis if there is no local file of the same name), so the numbers will probably be very low. The issue is that the system counts hits via URL, not the source. This type of scenario even affects redirects; when someone visits "Foo" and it redirects to "Bar", the hit count goes to "Foo" even though the reader actually see the latter.
This FAQ is just a page I cobbled together from Henrik's answers on his talk page. I figured he probably gets bored answering the same thing over and over. He is aware of it but I'm not sure he's even around enough to link it on his tool's website. Not that I care much either way. It's linked in several places on his talk page. Cool, thanks for the explanations. I've been checking in at Henrik's page fairly regularly, but often the answers are bit beyond my understanding. I was pretty sure Henrik probably gets annoyed, which is why I never bothered to ask. Thank you very much for your help and for creating this page. Zaereth (talk) 01:23, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. If you have any further questions feel free to ask (here or on Henrik's talk page). He is actually a very nice person and probably doesn't get necessarily "annoyed" when people ask him things. :-) Killiondude (talk) 01:31, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

annual stats further question

edit

Hi. Statistics tool is great, FAQ is great too. I am a very beginner to Stats. I was wondering how to see the stat for the year and FAQ had an answer. however there are some issues.
1. does not show current year data.
2. in past year, shows only 11 months and Dec data is missing.
this is example of stat of 2010 for Electricity generation Are there any answer already posted regarding this?
Thank you.--Masaqui (talk) 18:03, 31 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hm. I was not aware of this issue. I've emailed Henrik about it. Thanks for pointing it out. Killiondude (talk) 18:26, 31 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your prompt attention. I hope Henrik is not too busy. --Masaqui (talk) 02:09, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Total count, including subpages

edit

Hi, the German Wikibooks wants to use this tool. That's no problem by setting de.b as parameter. But we miss some features:

  • We miss the correct counter of a year, too.
  • Is it possible to get the total count as result of a function inside the wiki software? I found out that the count is part of the json site. But it would be useful to show this value inside a box on the same side. To do this I'm looking for a parser function according the json values.
  • Is it possible to get the total views including all subpages? For instance, according Wikijunior Europe one can call the counts of Germany and Greece and so on. How can you get the total sum of all these counts?

It would be great if Henrik would have time to improve the tool. -- Juetho (talk) 06:46, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Top viewed pages

edit

The advice in User:Killiondude/stats#How can I find out the top viewed pages for any given project? doesn't work: it always gives the top viewed pages for all of WP. RockMagnetist (talk) 17:16, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Only the English Wikipedia, in the example, which is "a project". There's no other way. Nemo 17:25, 20 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

What about robots?

edit

I am missing the question "Does your counter exclude page visits from search engine robots?" --Plenz (talk) 10:16, 20 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think it depends on how they are accessing the page. If it's completely through the API that's one thing (not sure if that's counted). If it is by visiting the page //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TITLE then yes. Killiondude (talk) 23:50, 5 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Could we standardise this?

edit

What I mean is, wouldn't it be great to have an easy way to view page stats for each page directly from said page? Or to include these awesome various metrics more tightly in the wikipedia experience? For instance, wouldn't it be awesome if when someone visited the Occupy Wall Street page there was a notice up top indicating it was the #5 trending article on Wikipedia this month?

What if wikipedia editors got to see stats on how many people have viewed their edits? It could be a great way to gamify being a wikipedian and spark a greater interest and pride in contributing. What do you think? Is there already a discussion about this kind of thing?Onecallednick (talk) 01:27, 28 November 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Onecallednick (talkcontribs) 01:25, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think that's something to be discussed on one of the Village Pumps. Killiondude (talk) 22:59, 20 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Non-Integer count of views

edit

Hi, on pages with just a few views per day the marks on the vertical axis ("views" axis) are not natural numbers (3.3333, for example). It seems strange, since a page cannot be partially viewed...Can this be changed? Is it important anyway? Roy guevara (talk) 19:13, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Top statistic for 2011 and 2012

edit

Hi Killion, I wonder if the top page statistic is renew for 2011 and 2012 even if there's data loss. I usually calculate stat and it can be seen in here Wikipedia bahasa Indonesia's article top 100 statistic, English Wikipedia top 100 article statistic, but I can not change the top stat from 2010 (I want to change them to 2011 and 2012) thanks for your help. Serenity id (talk) 09:34, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Henrik runs those reports manually. It seems like just yesterday that he ran that one. :/ You'll have to email him and see if he is about. Killiondude (talk) 07:58, 13 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

stats.grok.se Bug & enhancement

edit
  1. on http://stats.grok.se/it.voy/top (and on the other languages) the traffic is based on the 2014-03 dataset.
  2. in any page (e.g. http://stats.grok.se/it.voy/latest30/Bulgaria) if you click on "go" to make a research, it brings you by default to wikipedia results instead of the current wiki-project (the one specified in the URL).
  3. in the same page, if you click on "Bulgaria link" instead of reaching it:voy it returns an error because the link is malformed

Is it posssible to fix the above points? --Andyrom75 (talk) 23:27, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Stats.grok.se KO since 2016-01-21

edit

Hi Killiondude. The stats on stats.grok.se are really useful. Unfortunately, they have been no longer given since 2016/01/21. Would you know why ? Thanks Hippo75 (talk) 11:57, 5 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Hippo75. I'm not as active as I used to be in these matters, but it appears to be fine now. :) Killiondude (talk) 17:57, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, Hippo75 is right: stats.grok.se is again not updated anymore now since 21 January 2016. But as Henrik has not been seen active on any Wikipedia project since August 2014 there is little hope for recovery. For workarounds, further steps and discussions see Wikipedia:Web statistics tool. --.jsWP: [democracy needed] 21:36, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
