Addressing Concerns
editHi English Peasant, I'd like to address some perceived concerns. The reason I spoke out regarding Mario1987's ban is due to the fact that while he has not always observed policies nor always been accurate in his endeavors, he has shown a will to better the project and has sworn never again to abuse sock puppets, which is the actual reason he was banned. While my personal inclination was to deny this as being motivated by saying whatever is necessary to avoid a ban, I thought it necessary to assume good faith, as per Wikipedia policy. I assure you that I shall be watching him intently, and I've chatted with the unbanning admin regarding him, so if he slips up he'll be done forever.
When I say "return to productive editing." I was trying to be encouraging, and was only supporting the edits that comply with Wikipedia policy. While the user has behaved in a questionable manner in the past, I'd encourage you to give him the benefit of the doubt, at least until he messes up again, as it'll be his last time. Anyway, I hope this clears up some issues. Cheers! --Liempt (talk) 08:56, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Paraguayan football statistics
editHi, first of all thanks for working hard on south american footballers stubs, you're doing a great job (as usual!). As far as the Paraguayan statistics I'm afraid that RSSSF will be your best bet for finding caps and goals at the national team level. As far as club level you just won't find anything, believe me, I've tried so hard to find statistics for Paraguayan players with no luck. The only info I can come up with when creating articles are DOBs and career clubs (usually by Googling or from Diario ABC Color). Regards. Bruno18 (talk) 17:08, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Mario
editHi EP, I just thought I'd give you this little back-and-forth from my talk page so you don't get blind-sided or anything like that:
- Sorry to bother but could you please tell me where can i report an user who keeps harassing me about football player articles i've created because he keeps telling me that the articles are misleading, innacurate and other things like that. He sent me many messages and i left a message back to him to erase them all if he is not satisfied, he added PROD tags to many articles and other users didn't agree with him but he dosen't give up. Recently i found this message on a talk page.
I know that my past actions were regretable but this user is just incredible. I hope you can help me. Regards Mario1987 18:35, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- If you want i can provide many more links to talk pages where the user keeps attacking me. Mario1987 18:37, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Mario. While you have a couple options at your disposal for dealing with repeated abuse, I'd like to suggest a few things first. While a personal attack is a very serious matter, I think it's important to note that English peasant has the best interest of the project at heart, and is simply trying to stay within the guidelines for notability and factual accuracy. While it could be argued that he does so with too much fervor, I believe there are alternatives to reporting him at this stage. One of his major issues was factual accuracy; What I would do in this circumstance is, instead of treating it as an attack against me, treat it as constructive criticism. If I were sure that my articles were factual, in spite of his claim to the contrary, the logical thing to do is reference them! I think in this manner you two could possibly play off each other to build up a strong stream of well referenced articles.
- If you want i can provide many more links to talk pages where the user keeps attacking me. Mario1987 18:37, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- Another major complaint of his is notability. I personally see people who make complaints about the notability of articles as people dedicated to maintaining the quality of the encyclopaedia. When an article of yours goes up for deletion, I'd simply wait for the community decision. If your articles are truly notable, odds are that they shall remain in Wikipedia, as several of them already have. As for these percieved negative comments towards you, I'd suggest honestly to rise above it and ignore them. Try to avoid becoming personally affected and hostile yourself, and keep in mind that many people, including yourself, do questionable things with the quality of the project in mind.
- If, after all this, you still feel it necessary to take further action, you have several options at your disposal, most of them within the dispute resolution process. Consider informal mediation or contacting a third party to give a hand. If an attack is extremely disruptive (such as a physical threat or whatever) you have the option of reporting the abuser to the administrator's noticeboard, but I would strongly advise against this as immediate fighting after the release of a ban is not going to look good for you, further, I don't think he really deserves to be reported in any way shape or form. If you're still interested, consider reading the no personal attacks policy, don't call the kettle black and assume good faith
- Good luck! I hope you two can resolve your dispute peacefully and work together to build strong football articles, something you both obviously want to do!--Liempt (talk) 20:36, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I hope he takes my suggestions to heart. Good luck!--Liempt (talk) 20:42, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Ángel Marcos
editHi! I've created this article about former FC Nantes player and coach Ángel Marcos, who was quite successful in France. But I'm not sure of his Argentine clubs/years played/apperances and goals. Could you have a look at the article and correct it if needed, as you seems to love Argentine football.(I understand, many great Argentine players came to France...)Thanks!--Latouffedisco (talk) 18:08, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi!Thanks for improving the article about Angel Marcos! I noticed that it was very hard to find datas about Argentine players, that's a shame, however you can ask me datas for any Argentine player stats in France. No problem, I will ask you to help me when needed, I have some players in my sight...Keep up the good work!--Latouffedisco (talk) 17:00, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Guardian stats centre
editHello again. I just found this site a day ago, so I was hoping it would give a reliable source for appearances and goals in a few leagues that are difficult to find (e.g., Argentina, Greece and Portugal). It appears that the site only has tracked the past few seasons and some of the data is slightly different than other sources (e.g., ESPNsoccernet). That said, I think most of the data is accurate and it gives me a chance to find data on some players which I could not otherwise. Thank you for the note and best regards. Jogurney (talk) 19:26, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
If you know...
editIf you know something about colombian football, you must know that the names Atlético Junior and Independiente Santa Fe are absolutely false and wrong, because it was the old names of current Corporación Deportiva Popular Junior and Santa Fe Corporación Deportiva.
You can see it at http://www.dimayor.com.co/club_junior.htm and http://www.dimayor.com.co/club_santafe.htm
Thanks.
Hypocricy
editIf you examine your articles on Argentine football players you see words like 'impressive' , 'legend' and 'extraordinary' so to remove any words about Asprilla, clearly an outstanding player is ridiculous. As for the comment on Redondo it was linked to an article (i.e - sourced) so clearly its not only my point of view that he was exceptional. In fact he is one of the best Argentine players of the past 20 years in my view. So basically its pathetic, if you are going to be accusing of no NPOV then first look at your own articles. --JB 16.14pm 13/04/08
- Accusing people of Hypocricy isn't going to help if you can't point me to a particular edit of mine stating anything like "greatest ever", "excellent", "brilliant skills" etc. Even though many of the players I write about are in my opinion legendary and excellent, I try to write about them in terms of facts and achievements, not my own point of view. I am not responsible for how other people edit the articles I create afterwards, If I see anyone adding superlatives or speculation I always remove it. This project is meant to be an encyclopaedia, not a sports magazine. English peasant 12:43, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
In order to
edit- Instead, in order to meet Wikipedia:NC#Sports_teams, the articles can be named Santa Fe C.D. or Santa Fe CD and the other as Junior de Barranquilla, not Independiente Santa Fe or Atlético Junior because it was the former names of the clubs. ¿Or you name New York Red Bulls as Metrostars or Torino F.C. as Torino Calcio? It's the same mistake. --Kok13 (talk) 03:50, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- Please do not make perssonal argues in this discussion, I understand the Wikipedia Politics and also I know that the names Atlético Junior and Independiente Santa Fe are false and wrong, no matters what google says. Wikipedia coud have a sue about this... --Kok13 (talk) 17:22, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Santa Fe
editIt appears that the club has a new website at www.santafecd.net, but I agree that the English media (and www.conmebol.com) have not changed their identification of the club. Perhaps we should go with the name Club Santa Fe that is used by www.dimayor.com.co ([1]). I think that may be a common enough name that it can cover Independiente and the current iteration of the club. In any case, a RM is probably the best way to move forward. Best regards. Advice
editThank you for the helpful note. I usually try to populate the categories I start, but often get distracted and move on to something else (a bad habit, I know). As you say, populating the categories is a good way to find articles that need help, and I'll try to do a better job of populating any new ones before I forget about them (like I did with San Luis footballers). I've never used the ____ international footballers categories before, but I see they are useful and will add them to the relevant articles. Best regards. Jogurney (talk) 16:33, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

He played for AS Monaco from 1973 to 75 (13 matches, 5 goals), but all French sources say that he was born on 30 March 1946 whereas all others sources say 4 August 1941. He also played for Union Santa Fé before coming in France. New Project
editMyself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.
If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. Re: Current squad and Navbox
editHi, and sorry for the late response. In my opinion, your proposal has both pros and cons. The main advantage, as you already noted, is the simplification of the roster editing process. On the other hand, every single football club article should have a corresponding squad template, which is a thing I do not support at all (especially for minor league teams). Virtue is in the middle, as we say in Italy, so a possible solution is to add this support only for major clubs. This is my opinion. --Angelo (talk) 14:42, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Argentine League titles
editI agree with you that the Centenario Cup is a different competition, however the title of the section doesn't say "League Titles", it mentions official competitions by AFA in the Professional Era. Either we change the title, or we recognize whatever the AFA considers official. I see no reason to be more "papist than the Pope." Let me know what you think.Nordisk varg (talk) 18:38, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. I just checked how this page appears in the Spanish Wikipedia. Official championships in the Professional Era are properly categorized; the Centennial Cup appears in its own category, together with two other official AFA cups. All these three are listed in the AFA website among the list of "Argentine Champions of the Professional Era." I suggest we could do the same here in the English Wikipedia.Nordisk varg (talk) 19:01, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- I must say I disagree. We are talking of here of "Argentine First Division champions", so things like Copa Lipton etc are irrelevant because these were international competitions between countries. I think the criterion is simple: the AFA has a section entitled "Argentine First Division Champions." In it, in addition to the League titles, it quotes only three other cups of equal importance, one of them being the Centennial Cup. There's no different section or other cups like the ones you mention. All I'm saying is: 1) either to reproduce the official AFA criterion for what constitutes an "Argentine First Division Champion", or 2) Include a brief link to the proper section for these very unique three Argentine cups, as it is done in the Spanish Wikipedia site. It's not too much to ask.Nordisk varg (talk) 03:32, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Misquoting and arguing the point that is not being disputed is just distracting, not a replacement for good argument. Your sweeping comment regarding the Copas Lipton etc in your "response" to me is out of place, and clearly is not what I said. Let me try again: the point is very simple. The section we are arguing about is called "Argentine First Division Champions", not "Argentine First Division League Champions." If you add "league", then there's no argument since Gimnasia LP has not won one. However, since the concept of "league" is used in Europe, not in Argentina, the AFA accordingly labels the category as "First Division Champions" plainly. Gimnasia LP is one of those, and that's why it appears in the official list. I just want this article to agree with the AFA information, as it is the case of the one in the Spanish Wikipedia. Otherwise, state that the list in the English version refers to "league titles only." It's that simple.Nordisk varg (talk)04:50, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- We finally agree on something: we are wasting each other's time. Someone made the change I requested to the proper heading of Primera Division Argentina, so this aspect is addressed for the moment to my satisfaction. Still, though the article gives accurate information, it remains incomplete (thus inexact), as anyone checking the AFA site can tell. Hopefully, this will also be corrected soon. Do not assign a "misleading" intention to my corrections; they were an honest entry that was appropriate (to my view) with the heading of the table at the time. After all, none of us should claim to know more about Argentine football statistics than the fellows at AFA, shouldn't we?Nordisk varg (talk) 04:32, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Football template naming convention
editI saw you removed CONEMBOL from the Brazil template for Copa America, and I saw your edit explanation. So I thought I would give my resoning here. All national football templates currently have been using the conferderation in the template title. It is the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2008. Adding CONEMBOL is simply following the naming convention. Why is this a bad thing and in need of removal this especially helps when these appear on US or Mexican pages who may also appear in CONCACAF tournaments, not everyone is aware of which tournamnet belongs to which confederation. Please reply here I am monitoring this page Paul Bradbury 21:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
- I just find it very distracting, its quite hard to dig out what the template is actually about on the when Copa América is buried between Brazil squad - CONEMBOL and 2007 Winners (8th Title). I thought the reason European Cup was preceded by UEFA is that there are a number of other European Cups and there are also loads of World Cups and Gold Cups. There is only one Copa América of any note, and I guess not many other competitions called African Cup of Nations either, so I would see the inclusion of the confederation name as unnecessary. As for your point about reducing confusion, I disagree, especially since CONMEBOL is not wikilinked and CONMEBOL would surely mean nothing to anyone unfamiliar with what Copa América actually is. EP 22:23, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
- Fair enough, I still think I prefer consistency but given there is no consistency in naming convention at the moment anyway and that I buy your second argument, I am willing to bow to your way of doing it. May be worth raising at WP:FOOTY at some point. Paul Bradbury 22:36, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Rather than pointing out mistakes in the future, why not help editors work to avoid them in the future? I'm sure we can all create a more harmonious environment here on Wikipedia if we all work together to help each other :-) Thanks for taking the time to read this, friend. - I fail to see how pointing out mistakes is assuming bad faith, I did not accuse Enigmaman of bad faith, merely pointed out the minor mistakes they had made. I also reject your assertion that I was aggressive, terse perhaps, but I assumed from the length of their talkpage and the barnstar about 2 posts above my own that I was speaking to an established editor, who should be able to handle another editor pointing out their (minor) mistakes as I certainly would. Perhaps I should have told them how much I appreciate their effort to improve Wikipedia coverage of Argentine football before pointing out their mistakes, I shall apologise forthwith. - Hey thanks. That would've been simply sweet. Cheers mate :-) ScarianCall me Pat! 21:05, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Re:Wow
editDon't be fooled by the number! Most are Rollbacks and minimum editions. That really doesn't take much time. I decided I could spend 1 or 2 hours a day again after almost 2 years pause; at least while I don't have that much extra work. See you 'round! Mariano(t/c) 09:50, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
