My Question

edit

Wow...fast!

I am working on the page Garry_Galley and have contacted this athlete. He has scanned and emailed to me a photo of himself playing hockey that is from his own personal collection. I want to make sure that the photo is flagged properly so that it follows wiki rules. How/What do I label it as?

Thanks

Assuming that he still owns the copyright on the image we can't use a free licence like GFDL etc. So {{Promotional}} (a Fair use) licence is probably appropriate. Just explain how you obtained it on the image page and everything will be fine.--Commander Keane 14:20, 9 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Great! So I'll just put an explanation of how I got the photo and label it as Fair Use. Thanks for your quick response.

Deliverance

edit

Hey, thanks for asking. No, the Simpsons reference was fine, but if you look here, you'll see that, down below, on the left, all that yellow text is additional text from the article that, for some reason, the editor deleted. That was good content, so I reverted it. By the way, if you're doing recent changes patrol, you should check out CryptoDerk's Vandal Fighter. It'll blow your socks off. Cheers, JDoorjam Talk 02:00, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think that someone already put the Simpsons back in. I wouldn't worry too much about the citation tag on that one: it's really hard to cite the Simpsons, and at the same time, there are enough die-hard Simpsons fans out there that, it it's false information, it'll get removed. (Unfortunately, there really are no hard and fast ruled about when to add those fact tags...) Anyway, it definitely sounds lik you're on the right track with helping out around here! I hoped that help answer your question -- drop me a line if you have any questions about this, or anything, really. JDoorjam Talk 02:09, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Toronto

edit

Unfortunately, you added extraneous information for which the Cdn. city infobox/template isn't configured to capture, and doesn't for any other Cdn. city – for consistency and economy (as the infobox and article is already replete with too much information and in need of pruning), I removed it. And, frankly, nothing prevents you from adding this worthwhile information to the subarticle or to have done so in the first place. I will also remind you of the message below every edit page: "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly ..., do not submit it." Otherwise, I defer to my prior comments. Sorry. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 04:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Frankly, it's a judgement call: I'm not required to carry over information that is arguably misplaced to begin with. In the time it has taken you to comment, you could've have easily acted on constructive criticism and added it to the subarticle or taken it to the talk page. If editors were more judicious in their contributions and where they did so, many articles would not grow to become as long and unwieldy as the Toronto article has become (which is also in the edit note atop that article, which you overlooked). My edit summary is more than sufficient and, beyond these comments, I will not do so on this topic further. Thanks. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 04:51, 12 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Good. As well: please do not presuppose or insinuate that you are the only one acting in good faith. I've fully explained my reasons constructively ... take them or leave them. Be more judicious with your edits. And, newbie or not, refrain from being so argumentative. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 05:02, 12 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

KsprayDad responds: is it argumentative to ask an editor to not remove legitimate work from a page? If I find something in the wrong place, I'll move it to the correct one, not just delete it. To bad all editors don't seem to be worried about knowledge, just format.

I've already stated in a previous edit that Ray and Yolanda used the nickname on the show on more than one occasion. I'm unclear as to why, just because I recall it and other people don't, that means it's unverified. No one else seems to get asked to provide episode numbers and time stamps and the like for their edits.

But as I told the other person who continually reverts it, I'm not interested in getting into an edit war about it. It's fine with me if it gets left out for now, I'll just wait for the GSN repeat to bear me out and then put it back in.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Godofwarpsp.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Godofwarpsp.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 03:45, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:Garry_Galley.jpg

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Garry_Galley.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 21:55, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Ice Hockey August 2007 Newsletter

WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

Dear KsprayDad! You are receiving this newsletter because you have signed up as a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey. The purpose of this newsletter is to update on the goings on of the project, as there have been major changes, and a lot of new recognized content in the past few weeks. If you are an inactive user, you probably won't recognize the new and improved state of the WikiProject!

From the project, Maxim.

New recognized content

By Maxim
There have been a lot more Good and Featured articles written in the past few weeks. Here is a list:[1][2][3][4]

Featured articles
Good articles
Featured lists[5]
Notes
  1. ^ All articles are in order of promotion, as written on the main WikiProject page; FA's have official dates of promotions.
  2. ^ A star represents a featured article or list
  3. ^ A green circle represents a good article
  4. ^ Stanley Cup is an A-Class article
  5. ^ The lists system differs from articles, and doesn't give an official date of promotion
Article Improvement

By Maxim

Upon some discussion on the WikiProject talk page, the Article Improvement Drive page was revamped by Krm500 and Maxim. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status.

Diacritics

By Maxim

In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt.

Task forces

By Maxim
There have been two new task forces started within the WikiProject to coordinate major topics.

Sweden Ice Hockey task force

This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES.

New Jersey Devils task force

This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock.

Requested Images

By Maxim
After discussion on the WikiProject talk page, Serte created a page for Requested Images. The page encourages users to license images for use on articles. The page also has section to request images for players, arenas, game situations, miscellaneous, and team and league logos. The page has been quite popular; since it was created on July 21, there have been six completed requests. There are four currently outstanding requests:

Article assessement completed

By Maxim
On July 12, Kaiser matias announced that he had completed assessing all the articles with a {{ice hockey}} tag, sorting them into Category:Unassessed Ice Hockey articles. Kaiser matias has ranked about 9000 articles in that category, and most were stubs, and "have no information at all", according to him. Everybody is encouraged to expand the stubs into real articles. This effort took around 5 months. A big thanks goes to Kaiser matias from me and all the project.

Fair use rationale for Image:Gocampsp.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Gocampsp.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. New recognized content

By Maxim

Especially due to the featured topic drive, there have been many new featured lists promoted concerning NHL awards. Here's the full list of all the 13 FL's promoted since the last newsletter.[1][2]

  1.   Hart Memorial Trophy
  2.   James Norris Memorial Trophy
  3.   Vezina Trophy
  4.   Conn Smythe Trophy
  5.   Frank J. Selke Trophy
  6.   Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
  7.   Lester B. Pearson Award
  8.   Calder Memorial Trophy
  9.   Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
  10.   King Clancy Memorial Trophy
  11.   Jack Adams Award
  12.   Presidents' Trophy
  13.   List of Calgary Flames players

There have been no new good articles or featured articles. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has been given A-Class status due to multiple issues raised at FLC.

  1. ^ The last one, List of Calgary Flames players, is the only one not associated with the featured topic drive.
  2. ^ At the time of publishing, there were 5 lists at WP:FLC and 2 lists in the "Holding cell", as there's been an accepted guideline to not put more that 5 trophy lists at the same time to, "compensate for the sanity of the reviewers".
Did You Know?

By Maxim
There have been 4 new articles featured in the Did You Know section? on the Main Page since August.

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:

  1.   Hart Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  2.   James Norris Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  3.   Vezina Trophy (Scorpion)
  4.   Conn Smythe Trophy (Serte)
  5.   Frank J. Selke Trophy (FutureNJGov)
  6.   Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  7.   Lester B. Pearson Award (Scorpion)
  8.   Calder Memorial Trophy (Croat Canuck)
  9.   Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  10.   King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  11.   Jack Adams Award (Maxim)
  12.   Presidents' Trophy (Scorpion)
  13.   Stanley Cup (Earlier collaboration, very many involved)
  14.   Traditions and anecdotes associated with the Stanley Cup (Maxim)

Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion.

Concerning Advance Wars: Days of Ruin name change

edit

I removed the name change info because the user who had originally added it did not realize that it was unnecessary. None of the other Advance Wars articles contain info about the different names of the games in other countries. When he posted it, he also said that it was only a name change for the Australian release of the game. The user referenced this site:

http://www.slicedgaming.com/news/news10335.html

Hope this answers your questions. If not, please continue this discussion on the Advance Wars: Days of Ruin talk page. Comandante42 (talk) 03:14, 23 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

It appears the site is down right now or something, because I cannot test out the posted link. Anyway, the user seemed confident that the name change was for Australia only, so changing the article's name is unneeded at this point. If I can find more sources like IGN or Gamespot that claim the name change is for the North American version as well within the coming days, then I will see that the article is brought up to date immediately. Again, you can continue this discussion on the game's talk page. Comandante42 (talk) 03:34, 23 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Alright, now everything has been sorted out. Dark Conflict is indeed only the localized name for the Australian version of AW: DoR. The reason for the confusion is that Australian game sites were only informed of the game on November 20, not October 15 like in North America. The fact that the game was announced there as Dark Conflict gave the false impression to American sites that the game was getting a name change, but in reality this is all one big misunderstanding. Since only Australia gets this new name for their game version, renaming the article is thus unneeded. This site may shed some light on the whole thing, because the other one I posted above has experienced some kind of database corruption and most of their info has been deleted.

http://www.gameplayer.com.au/Home/PREVIEWS/PREVIEWGAME/tabid/1484/Default.aspx?CID=23b1c420-41b6-458a-921c-88fe2c9a6d99

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention so that I could resolve it, but I'll keep an eye out in case this whole thing turns into something bigger. Comandante42 (talk) 03:57, 23 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:JackDonohue.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:JackDonohue.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

Thanks for uploading Image:Corel Logo 2001.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:03, 20 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
