Horse Trough at 315 S 9th St
I created Horse Trough at 315 S 9th St to provke a discussion of urban horse troughs still to be seen in many cities, often with mottos and other text. Horse trough redirects to Watering trough, which says A watering trough (or artificial watering point) is a man-made or natural receptacle intended to provide drinking water to animals, livestock on farms or ranches or wild animals. This not the same as an urban horse trough by any means, especially when the rest of the article is about Australian agriculture.
Can you suggest what can be done now?--DThomsen8 (talk) 19:44, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
- The basic rule is that Wikipedia is not about provoking discussions, it's about what is notable according to these rules. Read them and have a think - the short version is that you need meaningful third-party coverage of the subject of the article - a passing mention in a travelguide would not be enough, an article about it in a print magazine would count though. Unless it's of major architectural significance, then this kind of thing struggles to get that kind of coverage. You're better off thinking bigger - as you say, the watering trough article needs work and could become a really interesting article covering everything from urban ones and historical ones to modern husbandry, or you might want to think about a more general article about the extant horse "infrastructure" of Pennsylvania as a whole. I know you could do a pretty good one on London, which has everything from stables to bridleways and even dedicated road crossings. Le Deluge (talk) 20:41, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for February 26
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 23rd Annie Awards, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Theodor Geisel. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Metric conversions in {{Infobox person}}
While I appreciate your other changes in that edit, I reverted your addition of {{convert}} to the height and weight fields in the infobox. Per the template documentation, conversions are done automatically by the template if values are inputted in the proper format, as happened in this instance. Categorisation
Hello Le Deluge. You'll see I've reverted a few of your edits on African categories, specifically those relating to Ruanda-Urundi and the Federation of Nyasaland. Whilst those federal entities did exist, the countries of Burundi, Nyasaland and Rwanda were all still administered separately with their own institutions. So whilst I think it's perfectly ok to have the federal categories, anything that happened in the individual territories should be in the territory-specific category, and those categories can be in the federal category. Federation-wide stuff (e.g. federal elections) should be in the federation category though. Cheers, Number 57 20:10, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- It's not something I'm black or white on, more of a strong preference, but then I suspect I tend to be a "joiner" and you're more of a "splitter" so I'm not sure I'll persuade you. Although it was more done on gut feel, my logic would be something along the lines of first asking - rather than get too tied up in the history of individual countries, take a step back and ask why are we categorizing? To make things easier to find. So the more "standard" the categorization, and the fewer layers of it, the better. It's pretty well established that in general the nation state is the limit for xxxx in yyyy type categories; anything more than that is generally unnecessary in most cases - people can find what they're looking for without it getting lost. Or to put it a bit more formally, I'd have a long hard stare at WP:SMALLCAT before creating sub-national categories in this hierarchy. The other issue is that at least "countries" are relatively easy to define, whereas particularly in the process of decolonization, you get all sorts of shades of grey - associated states, protected states etc, or unrecognised declarations of independence like Rhodesia - and sticking to countries helps consistency and standardization just because the lines are a bit less blurry. Some of the Bantustans were arguably just as independent as subdivisions of Ruanda-Urundi but we don't have year categories for them - and nor (bearing in mind WP:SMALLCAT) do we need them. So that was my logic, FWIW. Le Deluge (talk) 00:12, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- I think what I was trying to get at is that they aren't sub-national categories – certainly in the case of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, the three members were still separate countries (or rather colonies) that happened to be in a supranational federation due to European population's belief it would help prevent independence under African rule; the three all still had national legislatures, sports teams etc. It was rather like an early African version of the EU.
- I completely agree about making things easier to find, and I think the federal categories are likely to be far less useful than the national ones – for example the federal categories won't show up in Category:Establishments in Malawi by year. Number 57 00:26, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- The analogy with supran-national organisations like the EU breaks down because by definition, before independence you're talking about a sub-national division - ultimately it's London or Brussels that is making the division and what they says, goes in the same way that they determine the status of Yorkshire versus North Yorkshire. It's hard to claim that the legislatures etc were "national" in character rather than "regional/provincial/ducal" etc and completely independent when for instance stamps and coins were issued in the name of the federal structure. Sure you can get supranational currencies (again, hard to call it supranational when you're a colony), but stamps in particular are one of the first things to happen when a nation is created. And I'll keep coming back to the pragmatic view - regardless of the political detail, what works best for Wikipedia? There's no reason why the federation can't be put in Malawi cats even though the geographies don't match exactly - to take one example Category:Dakota Territory is in the history cats of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.Le Deluge (talk) 01:03, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

How did you even find this? It was empty when I speedied it the first time - I'm sure of that, because of which automatic deletion summary showed up - but the remaining file was tagged for the entire duration, hadn't been deleted and then restored, or any other shenanigans I can think of to check for. I'm thoroughly confused. :( —Cryptic 18:45, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
- Heh, it's my magic superpowers. <g> It popped up in a direct database query I run based on Wikipedia:Database reports/Red-linked categories with incoming links - and it wasn't there a few days ago, which implies either the file was placed in that category recently or there's a new link to the category - or its chameleon circuit broke this week. However, there does seem to be a minor problem with the database engine with category links sometimes not working, particularly if the category is set by a template, until either the article or target category has received a WP:NULLEDIT. But whatever the bug is, it sometimes seems to spontaneously start working again. It shows up more with other things, but I seem to see maybe one old random maintenance category in the report every week. Le Deluge (talk) 19:04, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Le Deluge. This is Zee money. Thank you for taking your time and effort to organize my work. A number of the articles that you have removed categories from are unfinished English translations of articles from other languages (Chinese, Japanese, etc). Your basis was its not being mentioned in the English text. Please do not make judgments on articles strictly by its English-language content. Zee money (talk) 04:58, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Hello Le Deluge, I was about to close this (as keep) but realized I already !voted in it - if you haven't seen the comments about how this will impact centralized user pages (where someone has one page on meta: only, and it is used on every project) please review and consider if on enwiki these should present as redlinks on their page when using "-0" in the master babel template. If you this changes your mind on the nomination please comment. — xaosflux Talk 12:35, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Empty categories
Please do not create empty categories which have yet to be assigned to any articles or pages. They will only need to be deleted until they are needed (IF they are ever needed). An example would be Category:2018 in television or Category:2018 establishments in Asia. I look at your deleted contributions and there are hundreds of categories which you created which have subsequently been deleted. Please be more judicious and selective and only create categories in existing category trees. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 11:19, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Liz: Believe me, I never create categories that are empty - presumably what's happened is that the articles have been deleted. Almost all the categories I create are a result of clearing the red-linked cats with incoming links report or parent categories of the uncat cats report, so the categories I create generally are pretty "solid" categories that are parts of well-established hierarchies. Conversely, I find myself creating categories that were deleted on grounds of being empty sometimes just a few days earlier, so perhaps the category deletion crew could be a bit more judicious in what they delete? Substandard speedy deletion nomination
Hello Le Deluge, I thought I'd point out that this speedy wasn't up to scratch on two fronts. Firstly, it would have been super-easy for you to populate the category yourself, as the relevant article listed five alumnae; the policy states that "before nominating a page for speedy deletion, consider whether it could be improved". Secondly, and maybe more importantly, you failed to notify the creator of the category, denying them the chance to attend to their omission themselves. Schwede66 20:53, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Rjdeadly edits
About the category "Roman legionary fortresses" -- the user responsible for moving all of the articles out of it has been indefinitely blocked due to copyright violations. (I just noticed that after adding my own protest to a speedy deletion of that category.) Perhaps the best thing to do is to undo his edits? Yes, it's tedious but it does the job. -- llywrch (talk) 22:52, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Update: I've moved a number of subcategories back to "Roman legionary fortresses" -- apparently he preferred to capitalize all the words, against the Wikipedia capitalization standard -- but from the empty subcategories, it appears there are still some legionary camps needing to be shepherded home. -- llywrch (talk) 23:15, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- I only came across the categories in one of the database reports I was cleaning out so I don't pretend to have detailed knowledge of the subject or a strong opinion, it just felt like someone who did have that knowledge, whether at WP:CGR or wherever, should take a look. So - whatever you think looks right.Le Deluge (talk) 23:39, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
