Rater tool for WikiProjects

Greetings, Tonight I noticed a large number of WP Biography articles that you've tagged. If you could take a moment to look at Biography assessment backlog. Using Rater tool automatically fills in Biography entries with "Lastas" and can massively tag all WPs for an article. I've been using Rater for thousands of article assessments & can honestly say it's a great help. Regards, JoeHebda (talk) 23:33, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi Joe, thanks for your note. I've installed the tool that you recommended. For now, I think it's easiest for me to finish working my way through my AWB list of untagged biographies. But once I've done that (should be less than a week), I'll be happy to jump in and help with the assessment backlog. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 00:26, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Lepricavark for your willingness to help with Bio backlog. When I first started it was over 100,000 and we all just keep chipping away. There is a bot that also tags bio articles needing assessment. Cheers, JoeHebda (talk) 13:40, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
JoeHebda, happy to do it. I enjoy working on backlogs, especially big ones. Category:Biography articles without listas parameter has been an ongoing project of mine for several years. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 13:43, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
JoeHebda, so far, the rater tool hasn't been auto-filling the listas parameter on biographies. How do I get it to do that? LEPRICAVARK (talk) 22:45, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Lepricavark - 1. Click on WP Biography & click on "Remove banner". 2. At top, search bar, start typing bio & click on Biography line. No need to type full name. Rater then adds with "Listas" filled in. You may need to re-click for "Living". For "Add parameter" common ones are "Needs photo" (type ph); "Sports-work-group" (type sp). Feel free to ask if you have more questions. Joe- JoeHebda (talk) 22:53, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 22:54, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi again - forgot to mention with Rater, for those WP Bio "Add parameter" entries, they "autofill" with the "Yes" so after choosing the paramerter, just press Enter. Another time-saver. JoeHebda (talk) 16:14, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
JoeHebda, good to know. Thanks! LEPRICAVARK (talk) 16:15, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Database error

From Category Unassessed biography articles

Now getting Database error - must have overloaded with too many updates?

[Xou17wpAMOIAASCyfl8AAAAM] 2020-04-06 23:06:23: Fatal exception of type "Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBQueryError"

Sadly, some expert will need to fix. Wonder where to report? Signing off for tonight... JoeHebda (talk) 23:13, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

I've never seen anything like it before. I guess the place to go is WP:VPT. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 23:20, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
JoeHebda, it looks like all non-talk page are not currently editable. So this is much bigger than just WikiProject Biography categories. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 23:25, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

MfD nomination of Talk:Bo Winegard

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Milwaukee Mustangs (2009–12) templates

A tag has been placed on Category:Milwaukee Mustangs (2009–12) templates requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! I am getting hundreds of notifications

From edits such as https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Record_producers_from_Arkansas&diff=0&oldid=774472726. Can you explain what you're doing here: why are you adding this to categories, to which ones, when you plan on stopping, etc.? Please use {{ping}} when you reply. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:21, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Koavf, I've seen an experienced editor, who I presume to be an expert on category work, doing it, so I assumed it was a reasonable thing to do. It has to do with adding a table of contents, as appropriate, at the top of the category. But if it is causing problems for other editors, I'll be happy to slow down after I work through the remaining articles current in my queue. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 21:27, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Lepricavark, The only problem is that I'm flooded with hundreds of emails. I'm just trying to understand why this is being added and when it will stop. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:35, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Koavf, I don't know why you are receiving emails, but if it is that big of a problem I will find something else to do. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 21:36, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Lepricavark, I'm receiving emails because I have a preference to alert me when something on my watchlist is edited. To be clear, it's not a problem if this is improving the encyclopedia. I'm confused as to why you are doing this and you're not actually answering my questions. Are you trying to add this to every category? Which ones get it and which ones don't? Why is this better? Is this a feature that should be added to MediaWiki software and implemented site-wide instead of having a template added hundreds of thousands of times? If you will at least try to answer some of these questions, that would be helpful. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:39, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Koavf, the template I've been adding will cause categories to display a table of contents for user convenience if the category contains a certain number of articles (I believe the threshold is 100 article). If there article count is below that threshold, no table of contents will be displayed. While I suspect that many of the categories to which I've added the template do not meet the threshold, some of them may reach that point in the future and there is no harm in having the template within the category. It is quicker and more efficient to add the template indiscriminately, but if this is causing watchlist flooding then perhaps the benefit does not outweigh the disruption. I will have to reconsider my approach moving forward. Perhaps your MediaWiki suggestion would be a better approach. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 21:51, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Lepricavark, Agreed. And it sounds like--correct me if I'm wrong--in principle, you want to add this to every category which I hope you can understand is a huge change that requires some consensus. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 22:36, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Koavf, I wouldn't really say I had a plan. But it sounds like I should probably stop for now, so I will. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 22:41, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Lepricavark, Thanks. I'll ping you if I make an RfC on this. Very helpful of you to respond. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 23:02, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

"Wikipedia list article"

Where does this short description that you are adding "Wikipedia list article" come from? There are a lot of useless things on Wikipedia, but adding this description en masse to articles that are already titled "List of [...]" might take the cake. Is there a practical reason you are doing this? Natureium (talk) 18:19, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

I stopped doing it over a month ago. The rationale for why I was doing it was given and subsequently reiterated in several threads located in User talk:Lepricavark/Archive 6. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 20:46, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello RohitTayadeRT5 (talk) 08:09, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Editor of the Week : nominations needed!

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up a citation.

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:50, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! Can you please edit List of radio stations in Alberta? The page is locked! Radio station CKYL 610 AM Peace River, Alberta had moved to FM at 94.9 as CKYL-FM in 2018. Thanks! :-)

@TRadio42:, you'll need to state your concerns on the article's talk page. I don't know anything this particular subject matter, but maybe somebody who can be more helpful will be able to weigh in at the talk page. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 21:23, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Please provide specifics

You've made insinuations against me on PackMecEng's page, and I'll bring them up here as well, so as not to fork discussion there too much (and to make sure you notice): "The inconsistency between Bish's NPA block here and their own incivility a short while ago is hard to for some of us to ignore. If you're going to take on a job that involves policing the behavior of other editors, you need to make sure your own hands are clean." Where was my own incivility a short while ago? Diffs, please? Hints without evidence are a poor show. Bishonen | tålk 10:25, 11 July 2020 (UTC).

You have atleast twice told an user to "fuck off" or "go fuck yourself" on AN/I: [1][2] during the last year. In October 2018, you reverted Lourdes' close of this AN/I thread about incivility by MjolnirPants: "Bull-motherfucking-shit. She-goddamn-nanigans. I don't believe this shit for one second, fuck off, Fuck off with this hypocritical butthurt, fucking bullshit, fuck off and don't come back, fuck off with that shit, bitchfit removed. Fuck your bullshit and your templates. Seriously; fuck off and don't post to my page again, If you disagree with it, you should go fuck yourself and pray to whatever deity you worship that we never meet in person". You didn't think those personal attacks were warning-worthy. Your stance on civility is confusing to say the least. --Pudeo (talk) 11:32, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
Bishonen, I assumed it was clear that I was referring to the incivility mentioned by Pudeo a bit further up in the comment chain to which I was replying. I don't think it would have been necessary for me to relink a diff that was already linked a few comments prior. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 16:22, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
Oh, yes, you're right, sorry. I'm afraid I never bothered to click on Pudeo's link, so I didn't know that referred to me. (Qedk is also an admin.) And I was a little confused because I wasn't expecting automatic ABF and ill will from you, based on this incident. I would have thought you'd check out the context rather than take Pudeo's word for it. Bishonen | tålk 16:56, 11 July 2020 (UTC).
I was already aware of the context of that diff because I followed the conversation back when it happened. Your comment was certainly understandable, but at the same time I think most editors who make uncivil remarks feel that they have a good reason for doing so. I have not forgotten the incident from last year and it was admittedly difficult for me to criticize your actions because I still appreciate the way you spoke up in my defense back then. However, I think it's important for the overall health of the community that we hold one another accountable for our actions. My comments at PME's talk page don't mean that I've stopped appreciating the way you went to bat for me last year (I promise you that I will always appreciate that), but it doesn't sit well with me to look the other way now because of some perceived sense of obligation to you. All of that said, I do apologize for giving you the impression that I harbor ill will against you. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 17:07, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
Your interpretation of my comment as uncivil is very strange to me. But that's Wikipedia for you, or maybe that's simply life: sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised, sometimes unpleasantly. Shrug. I'm definitely done here. Bishonen | tålk 17:16, 11 July 2020 (UTC).

Please don't insert bogus short descriptions

Hi, Lepricavark. I saw that you added bogus short descriptions per {{short description}} like "Wikipedia list article" to a number of articles ([3]). Please don't do that, this is completely pointless and counter-productive. Indirectly it will also pollute Wikidata. Short descriptions should describe the topic and contents of an article, not what type of Wikipedia entry it is. Also, "Wikipedia" and "article" is a self-reference to Wikipedia, something that we should avoid per WP:SELF. And "list" is a meta-information that also does not belong into the description. Condensing a proper short description requires that the topic has been understood and the article read (at least the lede, and if it properly describes the topic), and the word-smithing to reduce this into a short descriptions may take a minute or two as well. There is no point to rush and insert meaningless short descriptions, which might keep other editors from adding proper descriptions because the article no longer shows up among articles requiring a description. Thanks. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 18:14, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Matthiaspaul, thanks, but I've already had numerous conversations on the subject which you can find them in the archives for this page. Those threads will give you links to other relevant discussions. The short answer is that I already know what short descriptions are and I had good reason for adding the ones you have mislabeled as 'bogus'. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 21:40, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

Listas

Thank you for filling the Listas part of the talk pages of articles I created when I was a newcommer here. I naively thought a dedicated staff would do the job since nobody told me it was the author of any article to make the choice (start, stub, low, mid, etc.) In my mind it was impossible for a creator to be both the author and the judge. I am sorry it's taking you much time to complete these forms. Thanks again. LouisAlain (talk) 07:10, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for noticing. I enjoy the work and it's my way of doing my part. Feel free to add listas info to articles you create in the future, but don't worry about assessing as start, stub, .etc if you aren't comfortable judging your own work. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 15:24, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Howie Williamson

I am Howard Williamson's grand daughter. I might be able to help fill in some information. Fugitiveartist (talk) 01:57, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Fugitiveartist, you're very welcome to do so, but just remember to take note of our policies on verifiability and only add information supported by reliable sources. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 04:22, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

I have no idea how to do any of this stuff. I would be the siurce. How does that get verified? Fugitiveartist (talk) 05:01, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

What I mean is that any information you add to the article should be supported by external, reliable sources such as books, magazines, newspapers, and some websites. Information that you added based solely on your personal knowledge of Howard Williamson would be considered original research, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. I personally have no reason to doubt your sincerity or the accuracy of your knowledge about Mr. Williamson, but unfortunately we cannot accept information added by friends or relatives unless we can use reliable sources to verify the information. Otherwise, any random person could claim that they are related to Mr. Williamson (or any of our other biographical subjects, for that matter) and add information that they claim to know from first-hand experience, and we would have no way of knowing if the information was true or not. Again, I don't want to give you the impression that I don't believe you; I have no doubt that you are sincere in your desire to help. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask me here. Alternatively, you can open a new section at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball if you want to receive advice from editors who have more experience than myself in writing the actual content of our baseball articles. My only contribution to the Howie Williamson article was the addition of a brief tag to assist our mobile users by providing a brief summary of the article. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 05:15, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

There's a website that shows his parents and siblings, their birth and death dates. It also has a picture of him in his Cardinals uniform. It doesn't show his offspring, my mother, who died in 1991 or my uncle who is still alive and lives in Houston. I did once find a record of my mother's birth in Houston that listed both her parents. I know that he played in the World Series, that he pinch hit for someone and struck out. I know he was athletic in his youth which made his later issues rather cruel. He suffered from many strokes each of which limited him physically a little more each time. After baseball he made his living as a freelance commercial artist. He supported his wife and two children that way. Fugitiveartist (talk) 09:22, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

We don't generally include birth and death dates of parents or children on articles about baseball players. The picture could be quite useful, depending on whether it is copyrighted. We can gather the information about his MLB career directly from websites like Baseball-Reference.com. The post-baseball information including his strokes and his work as a freelance artist definitely belongs in the article as long as you can provide a reliable source that we can cite. Ron Kulpa

you reverted my edit on Ron Kulpa stating it was too much info for q routine ejection. It wasnt routine. It was heavily covered and lead to questions about Umpires having too much power. There is a routine ejection that is less noteworthy directly above my edit that was fine to stay in. Don't understand the reversion. Basetornado (talk) 04:33, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Basetornado, per WP:BRD, you should have taken the matter to the talk page rather than simply reverting my revert. You are quite right about the other routine ejection and therefore I have removed that one. The Astros incident may possibly have received enough attention to merit a sentence or two, but a lengthy paragraph is excessive. Moreover, your paragraph is heavily slanted to reflect negatively on Kulpa and I am concerned that it fails to comply with WP:NPOV. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 15:39, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

I understand it is a long paragraph but it was a long incident with multiple things happening. I thought it was well worth including as that incident is highly prominent when you google Ron Kulpa and it was odd that it wasnt included in the page to begin with. I dont believe it is slanted to reflect negatively. Instead it says what happened and Kulpas behaviour is what makes it appear negative. I understand removing the final line about Punishment as that wasn't made public. Basetornado (talk) 19:45, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Basetornado, anything further should be said on the article's talk page. I'll probably open a discussion there in a little while. LEPRICAVARK (talk) 21:39, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
