WikiCup 2010 October newsletter
The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Staxringold (submissions) and ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.
Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.
The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! USS_Gonzalez_(DDG-66) edit
Good afternoon,
The last edit to the USS Gonzalez page was to update the aircraft carried and current leadership as well as remove dead and obsolete links. The edit was previously made by me under an anonymous IP in August and incorrectly reverted in a future edit.
Please E-mail me at pao@ddg66.navy.mil if you have further questions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paoddg66.navy.mil (talk • contribs) 15:22, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Trouble with archiving my talk page
Hi. I was wondering if you could help me out. I have been reading how to archive my talk page. I've looked at other user's pages and tried Wikipedia's suggestions, but still have trouble. I am trying to set up my archive box like yours: a yellow background, bullet list, search box. I would also like to keep my image in the same frame as the archive box as seen on SandyGeorgia's page. All I could see was something called "fix bunching" which didn't allow me to see how he/she did her archive box. The only way I have been able to get a yellow collapsible archive box has been to use the specific user talk archive box found here. Also, my text comes out much smaller than yours. I have tried increasing the size, but what I write doesn't look right. I created my own Sandbox; you can see my edits there. Maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I can't get the bullet points to show up, and my text is small. The word "Archive" is also not centered. Wikipedia has a lot of information, but sometimes the information gets lost. I consider myself pretty computer literate, but still new to html and coding. I wish Wikipedia would offer more sample pages for archiving, using pictures, etc. I like your page's layout; it looks very organized and not cluttered. Suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you. I will check back here for a reply. If that is a problem, please let me know. You can paste the conversation on my talk page. CreativeSoul7981 (talk) 00:33, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- Alright, Doing... —MC10 (T•C•GB•L) 04:32, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- And actually, SandyGeorgia's archive box code is here; mine is here. You may want to take a look at them if you wish to change anything. —MC10 (T•C•GB•L) 04:34, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- Done. I have the code ready in your sandbox. (By the way, the reason why your text was leaving the screen was because you were putting it as the caption of the image, which only has a limited amount of space.) The archive box should automatically turn yellow when you put it onto your talk page; it detects whether a page is a user page or talk page and changes color based on that. —MC10 (T•C•GB•L) 05:25, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- By the way, here's a useful page about archiving pages: Help:Archiving a talk page. —MC10 (T•C•GB•L) 05:31, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have applied my edits to talk page. —MC10 (T•C•GB•L) 22:43, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Hi! You just reverted my edit, which makes sense - I'm sorry that don't really understand Wikipedia. But I put on the Talk Page my argument for why it should be changed - if you find the time, can you maybe tell me why I'm wrong? Thanks! Josh —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.36.172.179 (talk) 16:31, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, first of all, you should sign talk page posts (but not article edits) with your signature, as so:
~~~~
. But minding that, here are my two cents:- Use an edit summary. Do you see that box below the editing window that says "Edit summary"? Add an edit summary there for all edits.
- Cite your sources, especially for article edits that change original content. Basically, put
<ref>[http://www.dalton.org/common/news_detail.asp?newsid=314979 Dalton Football Triumphant at Homecoming 2006], Dalton School</ref>
right after the period of the sentence you wish to cite or after the last reference after the period.
- If you need any more help, just reply. Cheers, —mc10 (u|t|c) 16:59, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
Archive list problem with {{archives}}
DYK for James Charles Fahey
On 23 November 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article James Charles Fahey, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that James Charles Fahey started self-publishing The Ships and Aircraft of the United States Fleet when he thought editors were "butchering" his manuscripts? If you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
GOCE Drive – Final push
Greetings GOCE Backlog elimination drive participant, We are now coming up to the last few days of the drive, the last for 2010. Currently, it looks like we will achieve our target for reducing the backlog by 10%, however, we still have huge numbers for 2009. We have 55 participants in this drive. If everyone just clears 2 articles each, we will reduce the backlog by a further 110 articles. If everyone can just do 3 articles, we will hit 165. If you have yet to work on any articles and have rollover words, remember that you do need to copyedit at least a couple of articles in this drive for your previous rollover to be valid for the next drive. There are many very small articles that will take less than 5-10 minutes to copyedit. Use CatScan to find them. Let's all concentrate our firepower on the first three months of 2009 as we approach the end of this final drive for the year. Thank you once again for participating, and see you at the finish line! – SMasters (talk) 04:05, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated. Stats
Barnstars If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks. Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed. Thank you for participating in the last 2010 backlog elimination drive! We look forward to seeing you in January! Wikipedia Ambassador Program
Hi! Thanks for signing the Online Ambassador interest list. We're gearing up for the next term right now, and the Wikipedia Ambassador Program will be supporting considerably more courses, with considerably more student activity... possibly upwards of 500 students who will need mentors.
If you're still interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).
I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:19, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
