Help Desk Question

Hide/show menus

Since I didn't get an answer when I posted this Aug 31, I'll repost the question below:

Someone the menus in my userpages have stopped to load in the default hidden manner I coded them for originally. I think this changed because someone changed the code for it. Can someone help me fix it or point me to the appropriate page for details? - Mgm|^(talk) 11:40, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Manga

You say in your revision that "Manga is the Japanese word for comics and print cartoons". Can you explain the difference between comics and print cartoons? Hi, Mgm! Thanks for your question.

I'm using "comics" to refer to serial or sequential art, like Superman, Tintin, or Death Note. When we talk about these, we often say "comics and cartoons" but the word "cartoon" suggests animated cartoon, so I wanted to distinguish manga from anime. In your second sentence, you used the word "cartoon" in precisely the sense I meant. This is a glitch in English, really, since we have two wotds for comic strips and political cartoons, which would both be "manga" in Japanese. It may be simplest to remove the phrase "print cartoon."

Actually, in Japan, manga is not a special style of cartooning. It's the only style, because the word refers to ALL "comics and cartoons." It's only us in the West, used to OUR style of comics and cartooning, who think that manga is a "special" style used by the Japanese. In modern American comics marketing, "manga" is indeed a "special" category, but that refers to US marketing, which will come much later in the entry.

How does that sound?

Request help with article Ancient Egypt

As you are listed as a member of Wikiproject:AncientEgypt, I'd like to recruit your help in reviewing the article Ancient Egypt. The article is listed as top priority in the Wikiproject and as a vital article by the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, but appears to have failed to meet Good Article criteria at its last nomination. The article is in need of some serious attention.

In the past week, I asked for (and got) the article to be semi-protected to protect against the constant barrage of vandalism. This protection lasts for two weeks. I also did a little clean-up, added a map and so on. I would like to see everyone in Wikiproject:AncientEgypt have the chance to add their input to Ancient Egypt, and get the article up to featured status as soon as possible. I believe the article is at least 80% of the way there, and some focused attention will bring it the rest of the way.

The most pressing concerns seem to be the culture/architecture section, and the achievements/unsolved problems sections. Also, the entire article, especially the achievements section, the sources, and external links need to be seriously checked for accuracy. These sections also require a little organization too.

Ancient Egypt ought to be the top priority of Wikiproject:AncientEgypt, and I look forward to working with everyone to get this article cleaned up and hopefully promoted to featured status. Thanks for your help, Jeff Dahl 03:22, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Life is Wild

• Someone claimed Calvin filmed Life is Wild in February without stating a year. Given enough time, that could turn into a problem. Do you know how long ago it was shot? (MacGyverMagic who was too lazy to sign in). Also, I chose to merge a few months ago in the AFD, but since the show has been acquired by a network and will be shown, I feel now is a perfect time to spin it out. Threatened removal of material from Simon Wessely Talk page

Hi Mgm, thank you for taking the time to look at this problem. A user called MastCell ^Talk, supported by and unknown user, 70.53.131.179, said this last night: "In the interest of bringing this talk page back a little closer to its intended purpose, I'm going to begin removing comments that misuse this talk page as described above." The full discussion around this (i.e reasons not to do this) is on the Talk:Simon Wessely under heading "Talk Page Use". It does look as if MastCell is an Admin.

The situation is a little more complicated because of this: [1]. MastCell is involved in this, and key comments he made are not correct. The other person's comments are actually defamatory of me, to the extent I have had to write to Jim Wales this morning about this. It is true I joined as a response to a Wikipedian's intention to publish something which I considered inflammatory and unsubstantiated, and try to explain why this was not a good idea, but I have been open and honest and civil as possible in my dealings with people, I have undertaken NOT to edit, and more importantly, I joined because Jim Wales and others said that people like me should, instead of taking part 'anonymously'. I agree with you that if the subject is nonnotable the article should be deleted, and whether the subject wants it deleted or not is a moot point in such cases. I really don't know much about the subject, and therefore was careful in my answer to cover all the possibilities. It may be worth listing the article for deletion through normal processes if there are normal reasons to have it deleted, and I said as much in the Help Desk response. If you know more about the subject in question, then, as usual, you could give a more specific answer than I had. (My suggestion to contact OTRS was partly because that seems like one of the safer ways for the article's subject to avoid negative media attention due to editing/deleting the articles; after all, that's what the project pages suggest to do. The forum is Joseph's official news forum. The McManners no longer update www.josephmcmanners.com so new information is passed onto the forums to be posted. The only source to prove this is Joseph's MySpace http://www.myspace.com/josephmcmanners where the site is stated as his official site. The forum requires registration to protect the members, many of whom are children. However, on registration members have access to all the news and archives. Hi :D about the article - i didn't actually write it. i was looking for info on the artist and came to wiki (cuz if i can't find it here then i'm lost) and thought it was unfairly tagged, and when i checked the history i noticed that it was tagged way back when it was a bad article and that someone else edited it. I know that other people removed tags from articles i had fixed up so i thought i'd show the same courtesy to the person that did that article too (but wasn't sure if i could, hence going to the helpdesk). DYK confusion (bis)

Hello. You gave me this DYK[4] for Schwartzbard trial but it isn't mine ;-) It belongs to author and nominator User:Bandurist – I had only provided an alt hook. I suppose the attribution info got mixed up when the various hooks were moved from Suggestions to the Next Update and reduced to a single hook, or something. At any rate, there must be something in the Kool-Aid today, because that's the second erroneous DYK I received in a few hours ;-)

I could move the DYK section from my talk page to Bandurist's talk, but I guess it's preferable that I let you award it to him "officially". And now I'll definitely copy-paste the original author/nominator when I have a lil alt hook fun ;-)

Instead of removing the images this user included in the article, it might've been better to explain to him he needed to include a fair use rationale. I have had a chance to look at the diffs. The pictures were removed by a 3rd party. I reverted them to return to the format you had been commenting on. You had never said anything about removing images and I would probably disagree as each image has a purpose. You are talking about

This section would not really be necessary if there was an equatorial sundial article. Since there is not, I give the basics briefly here. However, 1. it explains why the sculpture is tilted (reason:so that the dial face is parallel to the equatorial plane); 2. It explains that this is an example of one of the two primary modified versions of the basic equatorial sundial; 3. RE:User talk deletion

I believe that keeping the user talk pages of banned users is unnecessary because if the user doesn't come back, there is no need for it and that talk page just takes up space. Thank you for the help. Marlith ^T/C 01:33, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Hiya. Re the article, the lack of Google hits was only part of the reason I requested a prod. The main reason (and what caused me to check Google in the first place) was that the article itself did not give any indication that the person had taken part in any competitions, tournaments etc., let alone having won anything. Imho that means the article fails the criteria for notability - hence the reason for the prod. However, I'm also the first to admit I'm still new to this, so if my reasoning is wonky, my apologies ! :-) CultureDrone 19:02, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Tweak cite web

How will the proposed change affect existing pages? If it means that a mass change of all the article the template is used on, I would certainly oppose it, but I'm not fully up to speed on why you suggested it in the first place. - Mgm|^(talk) 09:24, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Dates formatted as 2007-11-17 would be automatically wikilinked as 2007-11-17 if they are not linked already. Dates in other formats (which I believe are discouraged under the template's usage guidelines), such as November 17, 2007, are not affected. —Remember the dot ^(talk) 18:27, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Have rewritten the article to be more easily understood. Removed the duplicate links from the see also section as well. Also added links to paragraphs where links were missing. re: Newbie article creation

Yes, I've seen the discussion about anon creation and I gather that there is no consensus so it won't happen. Having spent a little time on New page patrol, I would not want to see a flood of more bad articles until we see better quality in new articles. I think that about two-thirds of new articles don't have references - and without references they usually don't demonstrate notability. If we continually pound the idea that articles MUST have references maybe we'll get better articles. The proposed (i.e. in progress) wizard might also help but I still want people to read a complete set of directions so that they understand what is supposed to be in an article. Possible Copyvio

Hi, MacGyver. Thanks for reminding me about the possiblity of another site copying Wikipedia, in the case of E Troop, 238th Cavalry (United States). I checked the site I think the article is in violation of and the last update to the page was in 2005, 2 years before the Wikipedia article was created. Is this a sure-fire indicator of copyvio, or is there another way to check?-Heno (talk) 12:49, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

I took your advice and used the wayback machine to check the website. The page definitely has definitely existed as early as 2004. I'd like to rewrite the article, but I had already tagged the article as a copyright violation and added it to the list on Wikipedia:Copyright problems before you had talked to me. Should I wait until the copyvio investigation process has ended to rewrite the article, or try to get the tag removed?--Heno (talk) 12:22, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
