RFA

Although I know that you are capable of becoming an administrator, I know that the other editors here aren't going to look kindly upon all your image edits. I really feel badly about closing it, and I know that you might feel the same, but I'm 100 percent willing to help you meet the minimum for becoming an administrator. Have you considered working on WikiCommons and eventually becoming an administrator there? If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 03:09, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

I meant to put this in there earlier, but I'm sorry about closing it so soon. I figured that it would go poorly, and I wasn't thinking clearly at that time. I'm sorry for any confustion that was caused. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 14:23, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

I have reopened the RfA - it doesn't strike me at all as being a NOTNOW case. You should also have given the user a chance to withdraw first. Wisdom89 (T / C) 03:10, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. Magog has been editing since 2008, so this is not a NOTNOW case. Also, you should have spoken to Magog first, which I see you have not. Regards, Javért 03:13, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Don't worry about it too; it was a good faith removal, and it's not like my life will end if my unsuccessful RfA is unsuccessful a few days earlier ;). We all have lapses in judgments. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:07, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Just a word of encouragement, as it took me two RfA's to get the mop. You had my support this time, and you'll have it again next time. Hiberniantears (talk) 02:48, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Magog the Ogre. Just like Hiberniantears above, I also think you have the potential to become a good sysop. I see you're willing to work with images (an undertaking few users dare to take on) and have a fair grasp of image use policies/fair-use. I'm technically supposed to be on Wikibreak right now but when I come back in December, I'd be more than willing to admincoach you. Please consider it. I'm sorry for any inconvenience; I did it per {{PD-Germany}} - "photographic works are copyrighted for 70 years after the death of the photographer." If that's incorrect, then we certainly need to reword our template. Do you have a link to the said text of 50 years after publication? And was it superseded per EU policy? Cassiechadwick.jpg

With all due courtesy, your tagging of the Cassie Chadwick image is amazing. Chadwick died in 1907, well before the 70 year rule on US copyright takes effects. Furthermore, the image was taken sometime in 1880s when Chadwick was in her 30s. Perhaps the fair use classification needs redone, but thats all. But I have to say that it is exactly this type of action that has driven me off Wikipedia, and the top reason why I don't contribute to the site any longer. In the end do whatever you feel like doing, I don't care. But please STOP sending me notices of your intentions to zap images that I loaded two and three years ago. SunTrust bank locations

Hello Magog the Ogre. I am seeking the KML file for all SunTrust bank locations. Please advise? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.177.138.143 (talk) 18:43, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with a KML; I ran a script on the FDIC bank find, downloaded a zip code to latitude/longitude list (although it's a bit old), and had a program run the data on a svg map. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:35, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Game log

I just finished merging a game log in 1965 Los Angeles Dodgers season, and I think I achieved a fairly good format for the collapsible sections. In particular, it's hard to read the [show] links in 2009 Los Angeles Dodgers season, due to the blue on blue. In 1965 Los Angeles Dodgers season, I used the collapsible table class directly, rather than the container divs. Obviously, feel free to change the style to conform with the norm if people don't like it, but I found the [hide] links easier to read. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:34, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Do what you wish with the page; I'm not at all invested in any particular style. I'm not even sure why you're notifying me to be fully honest. Magog the Ogre (talk) 17:52, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I was notifying you because the first line contained the comment "Please do not edit this line: OgreBot Begin". Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:57, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Yeah the OgreBot thing was a bit of a disaster; took longer than I expected to program, and there were "not on my turf" reactions, so I let that be, edit as will. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:52, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

PNC/NatCity footprint

Is there any way you can update the PNC/National City footprint to have all of the branches in blue? Although as of today PNC still needs to convert branches in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri, there are other footprint maps of a recently merged bank in one color such as Wells Fargo and Wachovia, which Wells Fargo is taking another year to finish. PNC will be done with the NatCity conversion in June. Thanks! Jgera5 (talk) 14:29, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Bank footprint maps

I just wanted to thank you for putting up the footprint maps for many of the major banks with the blue dots. These have been extremely useful for me.Bud08 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 09:10, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome! What a shame it is how few of them I've been able to accomplish. Hopefully I will be able to do more. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:36, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
For that matter, if you'd like to contribute, just list any banks you want me to print up for you, or better yet, find a way that I can get some maps for some other major organizations (e.g., Walmart, aside from that lousy store finder they put on their site that tries to hide their locations). This bank recently made an acquisition in South Carolina. I hope to add more details to Wikipedia about this. This will at some point require you to add more of your blue dots. Thanks.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:33, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Point me to the charter under FDIC bankfind. At that point, it's all automated. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:47, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
This is what I came up with.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:38, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
My question: when will the official bank merge occur under the FDIC? Do you think it's appropriate to add it now? I just don't want to do so prematurely. Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:41, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
To clarify, I don't mind adding it, but I'd hate to make the change before it was approved by the shareholders and the antitrust lawyers in the government. Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:42, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

I understand. It's not a done deal.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 15:22, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Per your request you are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.  7  02:29, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Hey Magog--I'm a big fan

Hey Magog,

I am a big fan of these maps you make of financial institutions. How do you do it? Where do you get the list of the bank branches, etc? Willing to pay a fee for the advice. Also, check this one out that another guy made:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9e/Pncnationalcityfootprint.jpg

Cordially,

Michael —Preceding unsigned comment added by Greenegg425 (talkcontribs) 16:09, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Haha, I made that one too, I probably should fix that up to only include Nat City branches. Actually, it's a self-written program that's a Frankensteinian mixture of Perl which outputs data in C++ format, which is then compiled and run with appropriate input variables; the C++ code takes an svg format map which I convert by hand into png format. I get the bank branches right by ripping it off FDIC bankfind. The program converts the zip code to a latitude/longitude via a list I created by scraping the information straight off MapQuest (hey, the information is not copyrightable), and in rare circumstances (e.g., where I need a more precise dot), I will actually scrape the lat/long off MapQuest for each street address. I'm not quite sure it's ready for public release (hard to run, possibly buggy, incomplete, and if not run carefully could amount to an attack on the FDIC's or MapqQuests servers), so if you have anything you wanted me to map out, just let me know (I'm currently working on other formats, e.g., Target Corporation). The surprising part of all of this is that the programming took relatively little time to write up; it's the process of drinkering with the map appearances that takes forever. Reverted images on Maui Mallard

I'm sorry about changing the boxart, but there was a very simple reason I did it. Originally, that page was headed up by an image of the European box art for the game, under the filename 'maui europe.jpg'. Since the standard on Wikipedia seems to be to use the American box art, even if the game was made somewhere else, I uploaded the American box art as 'mauimallard.jpg' and made that the head of the page. The next editor wanted to change it back, but instead of switching the files, he actually re-uploaded the European boxart to mauimallard.jpg, my file, and left the page as it was. So, not wanting to start an edit war on the page, I switched my file back to its original state and placed maui europe.jpg on the page in a thumbnail, as a compromise. Instead, the user removed maui europe.jpg from the page and changed my file again. So, I finally gave up, changed my file back to the American cover art, and made maui europe.jpg the top picture on the page. I didn't mean to cause any trouble, I just didn't appreciate having my image changed for no reason. Master Deusoma (talk) 08:24, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Goodness, I'm sorry I must have misread the image page history. Yeah that should be OK, but I would definitely advise placing a notice on that user's page, and placing notification on the administrator's noticeboard if the issue continues. There are always two sides to a story but yours sounds OK now. Magog the Ogre (talk) 08:40, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Dear Magog

Regarding images, I sent you a few messages within the template I received. You have not seen them probably. Some of these photographs are already licensed under CCO 1.0 Universal at the Internet Archives. I don’t know how to add the tag now since photographs are already downloaded but I think the appropriate tag would be CCO 1.0 Universal for those already licensed and –Release into public domain. Financial Institution footprint data

Hey Magog. I saw all these bank footprint maps you made, and am just wondering where the data from these came from, how the png's were compiled, etc.

(sorry if this is not the correct way to message, I couldn't figure out another way) Rufuswu (talk) 21:45, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

This is the correct way to message! I think I'm going to have to create a FAQ or something, I've had a good number of questions about it: see User_talk:Magog_the_Ogre/Archive_2#Hey_Magog--I.27m_a_big_fan. First off, I created a list of every zip code in the country and its corresponding latitude/longitude. Then I get the branch information off the FDIC, and compare the zip code and create circles on an svg location map. I convert the map to png by hand by use of GIMP. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:52, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Ah - thanks. In this case, much thanks/respect for coding this (even though you it "didn't take much time"). I've worked with zip/lat/lon databases before, wouldn't know the first thing about being able to plot those onto an SVG though. The thing I'm working on right now is a comparison of footprints for major retail banks (pretty much the top 10-ish by FDIC deposits). I'm guessing that if you could send me the original SVGs for the maps you've already made, I could load them into illustrator, merge the dots for each institution onto the same background, color code them, and then have a pretty cool idea of how they overlap. Do you think you'd have time to help out with this (it's for a work presentation and would be nice to have in the next day or so). Feel free to email me, I think I enabled that option but not sure where the link is, haha. Rufuswu (talk) 15:54, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't keep the maps, I generated them on the fly. Which banks were you looking for? I can create a) a rough map of the entire US (minus AK/HI/territories) with state borders, b) a high detail map of the US (minus AK/HI/territories) with county lines, or c) individual states (including AK/HI/territories). I just need a rough idea of what you would like. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:31, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

If you have time, a rough map of the 48 contiguous states with state lines would be perfect. The main banks I'm looking at are: Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, TCF, Chase, Citi, Fifth/Third, PNC. If possible, it would also be nice to have these regional ones, since they might actually overlap more: Regions Bank, Key Bank, Union Bank, Bank of the West, Harris Bank. Thanks a ton! Rufuswu (talk) 21:28, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Here you are: [2]. I made the dot size universal for all the maps, you might want to tinker with it (I do whenever I do uploads) - you can do that in Inkscape or a find/replace of the raw text. Also, I'm not buying a Rapidshare account, so you only have 10 downloads. Magog the Ogre (talk) 11:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Words cannot describe how awesome this is! Thank you again. 70.13.118.44 (talk) 17:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Mort Walker

This template has been altered to expand the rationale. Pepso2 (talk) 00:32, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

The lack of notations on the rationale itself wasn't the problem; it was using a non-free image to demonstrate the appearance of a living person, which is against our fair use guidelines. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:41, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Actually, it's not the appearance of a living person. It's the perception of that person by himself, as is the case with all self-portraits. I view this as quite different from "the appearance of a living person", although I'm sure many would disagree. Pepso2 (talk) 01:04, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Under the infobox, where we usually put a photo of the person on the article, I'm fairly certain it will not do. You might be able to get away with the photo somewhere else as demonstrating "the perception of that person by himself" - but that's iffy too. If done properly, you could use the photo if you are using it to demonstrate the appearanace of his artwork, as no one can create a free equivalent of his work. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:09, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Moved image from infobox to main copy area. Pepso2 (talk) 01:24, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: museumofcartoonart.jpg: The Museum of Cartoon Art building was described as being "dilapidated" 34 years ago. As fo the other two images, do you personally know Marko Rakočević or Vuko Rakočević? And do they approve of the license you've put up? This information would be helpful under the "author" section. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:01, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Mountlovcen8 says he does know them personally, and they approve. Is there any specific template to use for that, or do I just put "approved by (name)" next to the author's name? Thanks for your help, Airplaneman 02:52, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

For professional photographs and photographs online, we use {{subst:npd}}. However, if it's a family or friend, there's really no way for the Wikimedia foundation to verify the identity of the original uploader and contact that person (we'd have the contact the uploader, ask for the alternate email of that friend, which could just as easily be forged by the original uploader). As such, our practice is to just let it be, with a notation that these people specified this license exactly (not "this person allowed me to upload it to Wikipedia") under the permission or authorship section of the information tag. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:07, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

And done for File:Dejan Stojanovic, 1981.jpg and File:Dejan Stojanović and Prince Nicholas Petrović Njegoš of Montenegro.jpg. Thanks again, Airplaneman 03:26, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Dear Magog, I wanted to thank you personally for cooperating and helping us resolve the issue with images. My apologies for making you work more than needed and for any inconvenience this may have produced. Best regards, Mountlovcen8 (talk) 03:22, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Dear Magog,

I told Airplanman that there are still those words – candidate for speedy deletion – under the second and the third photograph in the article. He said they will be removed after the article is published. I still thought it would be good to remind you and kindly ask if they can be removed. This is the link to the article – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dejan_Stojanovi%C4%87 The problem is fixed and I am just trying to make sure that this will not be overlooked; these words, under the photographs, would produce confusion when readers read the article. Best regards, Mountlovcen8 (talk) 20:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

I've removed that; the only reason those captions even exist is as a warning to the users who read that article; they don't actually serve to tag the image for the deletion process, like the actual tags do on the images themselves. Once an issue like this is fixed in the future, you can always go ahead and just remove that yourself. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:23, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

I understand. Thank you. Best regards, Mountlovcen8 (talk) 01:58, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

The Amazing Adventures of Eco Boy, Volume 2.jpg

I used the book cover tag and linked it to the source (publishing house). Is that enough? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rakkan (talkcontribs) 08:43, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry, you're right, it's there; most often the license is placed in a different section from the rationale, so it threw me for a loop. I'll remove the tag, my bad. Magog the Ogre (talk) 08:46, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

User:Musicboy22

I blocked this guy for a month. For future reference, please be aware that if you make a report to ANI, you're supposed to inform any users involved (I mentioned it to Musicboy in my block message). If you find that he still doesn't get the message, I'd be happy to block indef. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 19:29, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

I didn't know that. Is it written somewhere or just an unwritten rule? Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:02, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it's written in the big box at the top of ANI. I wouldn't worry; lots of people miss it. Part of the problem is that the box is too damn big... Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 22:12, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

I read over the whole thing and couldn't find it. After you typed something, I found "You must notify any user who is the subject of a discussion. You may use {{subst:ANI-notice}} to do so.". Apparently, I just needed to ask a stupid question before I could find the obvious answer. C'est la vie. ;) Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:37, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

I've reread the text of the law - I originally assumed it was 60 years after death, but it looks like that is only for artistic works, not photographs. I'm also going to tag it as free in the US. Thanks for notifying me. Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:18, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Thank you, very much, for your kind words at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Church of Scientology editing on Wikipedia about my work on the article. Much appreciated. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 08:01, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Possibly unfree File:Médaille d'honneur du service de santé des armées.png

You are right I copy/pasted the wrong file summary info. That is what I get for doing things when I am tired. I have corrected it to fair use since it is an image of a historic French medal, and there is no public domain image available at this time. Ericalford (talk) 13:13, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't know where to find the copyright information for File:Snagfilmslogo.jpg. Can you or someone else help me find it or add the necessary info for the file? The URL is provided. Ultimately, all I am looking for is the Snagfilms logo so if it is easier to find copyright info on a different file/website that is fine, as long as it is the same image. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aekenned (talkcontribs) 15:02, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

This process will be considerably easier once you've moved the article into the main space, as then we can claim fair use on the article. Are you going to do this in the next few days? If so, please let me know when, and I'll make sure to fix up the images. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:53, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Great. I just moved the article into the main space. Let me know if there will be any copyright problems with either the logo or the screen shot in the right table. Thanks for your help! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aekenned (talkcontribs) 12:22, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

I cannot add the fair use rationale on the screenshot until you've added it to the article. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:52, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Chameleon Pictures

As far as I know the images can be used - but not sold, or printed in a book that is for sale; "Wikipedia the free encyclopedia"? I will try to email and find out for certain.Michaelwild (talk) 23:18, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

That license, unfortunately, is too restrictive for Wikipedia. See {{cc-by-nc-sa}}, which is the license the images have on their source page. See the top at commons:Commons:Licensing, which states "Media licensed under non-commercial only licenses also are not accepted." Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:26, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:0030 1949 train along pier2.JPG

Dear Magog,

I have added some information regarding the source of this image. Please can you confirm that this is now acceptable? Having seen the image in one of the discuusion groups refered to in the source description, I have been in email contact with the photographer, who has given his permission to use this image (along with some others he also sent me.) They were taken privately by him, and are from his own private collection. I have included a comment from his email, but I don't feel it is appropriate to put his direct email address on wikipedia, for privacy reasons. I hope this clarifies the situation to your and wikipedia'ssatisfaction. Kind regards, Lynbarn (talk) 23:28, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

That is quite OK, but we'll have to ask you to follow the procedure of sending us the email. Those emails are only able to be viewed by a select few persons whose job it is to verify such things. Please see the instructions at {{Di-no permission}}. Thanks! Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:32, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation, I've posted the email. Sorry, but I didn't see that bit on the tag you originally posted on the file page. Hope this is now okay. Regards, Lynbarn (talk) 23:46, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi, Thank you for the information on the cropped image My appologies also for typing in upper case. LESHAIGH (talk) 23:36, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for working out the issues; I wasn't sure exactly where to go with rationales on this and thought it would be a copyrightable image, but you can't be sure in some cases. Thanks for looking it over :). Nate (chatter) 05:30, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, ValenShephard has been a single purpose editor since s/he arrived, the purpose being to push a left-wing POV (left-wing from the standpoint of Latin America). I find it jaw-droppingly ironic that s/he "cannot take your opinion too much to heart because you have revealed your partisan stance and desire to 'balance'". To be honest, I haven't held much hope for her/him from the beginning: if one's desire is to push a point of view, Wikipedia is most definitely not the place for such an editor. An RFC is probably the place to go at this point, and you would be as good as I at creating one. Magog the Ogre (talk) 15:26, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm going to be mostly offline for at least two weeks, and will see if anything has changed when I have more free time after that. Unfortunately, as a new editor, he hasn't gotten a very clear message at Talk:Chavez from other editors about what is acceptable on Wiki; for some, it's convenient to look the other way when disruptive editors appear with the "right" POV. Questions on search and wikipedia

I noticed my topic is not searchable.

How do I add some keywords to the search so that others can find my article? For example, I would like to be able to search for the acronym, not just the full name of the organization.

I noticed you have quite a few wikipedia credentials on your user page. How did you become so knowledgeable about wikipedia? Did you take a course? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DHoodPPDM (talkcontribs) 15:18, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

The answer to your first question: I'm not quite sure what you mean by "searchable" - the article will show up on Google within a matter of days. Can you clarify?
Your second question: I am actually going through a one-on-one training with an administrator right now, but that's not necessary. I'm just very good with computers and encyclopedic type of things, so I picked up on everything naturally. A user can add any of those credentials to their page, with the exception of rollback rights and reviewer rights. If you want to know how to get the right to do either of those, see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions. You'll have to edit a bit to show your trustworthiness before an administrator will grant rights on either of those. Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:18, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

RE: Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Sapphire 2010-06-02.jpg

The article this copyrighted image is used needs an image to illustrate its subject, I know you say a free equivalent could be created but there is none here and somebody can't just go to Greece and take a picture of the ship. Please tell me how I can edit the rationale so that it could stay on Wikipedia. 1Matt20 (talk) 23:50, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Our policies on Wikipedia are such that we don't accept fair use images of living subjects or buildings/objects which are still standing. I realize I've gone through your uploads and I really do apologize for having to do that, and I'm sorry about any frustration I've caused on the issue. However, the policy is such because such an image could in the future be snapped by someone in Greece, whether a Flickr user with an appropriate license, or the US military, or a Grecian Wikipedia user. As much as it's an inconvenience, it's done on Wikipedia's part in order to maximize free usage as much as possible. As such, we probably can't accept any image of these objects right now. I would actually encourage you to post at help desk if you want a second opinion on this, but I'm fairly familiar with this distinction of Wikipedia image policy. If you have any other questions or comments, please do respond to me. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:54, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

So is there basically no way to keep it here? 1Matt20 (talk) 00:04 , 20 August 2010 (UTC)

As a non-free image, that's right. We have a lot of articles that don't have images as a result. One thing you can do is under the "external links" section link to any sites that have non-free images, hopefully created by the very sites you're linking to. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:07, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I thought there would be a possibility of keeping it due to another image, a picture of a ship which doesn't even HAVE a fair use rationale that's gone un noticed for five years... *sighs* 1Matt20 (talk) 00:18, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Where is it? Does the ship still exist? Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:38, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
One thing you can consider doing is writing to the original authors by email and asking them to release the images under {{cc-by-2.0}} or {{cc-by-sa-2.0}}. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:39, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

No the ship in the picture File:JVO sea.JPG in the article TSMS Lakonia I talked about on my last postdoes not exist, meaning I guess it could be allowed... and the MS Sapphire does exist. I have emailed ship parade.com asking for their permission on File:Sapphire 2010-06-02.jpg. I have also emailed the owners of the other two pictures of mine you nominated for deletion (yay) who gave me permission. 1Matt20 (talk) 01:00, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

OK great, hopefully you'll get permission. There's a whole week before it will be deleted, and once you get the email to OTRS, they'll tag it properly. As for the one that does not have the ship exist, feel free to remove the fair use disputed tag, and make a note of that under the "irreplaceability" section. BTW, the image you just showed me is legitimate, but it lacks a fair use rationale; I've tagged it for deletion, although someone will probably fix it soon (I'm still learning about our tools to add such a rationale quickly). Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:05, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Do I just forward the email proving permission to that wiki email, or what do I say along with it? 1Matt20 (talk) 01:20, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes: when you get the email back from the responder, forward it to the OTRS address. Hopefully the responder left your question under the quotation part of the email: if not, you might want to include a copy of the message you sent as well. Thanks! Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:23, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

The article RMS Georgic (1932) had a non free use image on it until one could be found, and the non free image was subsequently deleted. Could we keep it until a free image can be found? 1Matt20 (talk) 01:20, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

The only image on that article is free use. It was uploaded by commons:User:Rx 100e and claimed to be his own work, however dubious that may be (I'm not sure how he managed to go back to 1930 and snap the photo). Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:39, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
In fact, every one of that user's uploads is suspicious, and I may take a look into them at a later point. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:41, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I just mean it should keep on the article until a free image can be found, I've seen this concept, and I've seen non free images, many, many times. The people who gave me permission for the two pictures have emailed that permissions email. I doubt ship parade will respond. There is another website, once/if File:Sapphire 2010-06-02.jpg is done for, I could ask to use their picture. 1Matt20 (talk) 13:41, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I can understand your frustration; in fact many disagree with it. Wikipedia's fair use policy is stricter than US fair use policy (so far as I can tell): but it comes straight from founder of the project himself, so it's pretty non-negotiable. And by messaging the website authors, you're doing a great service for the project, by the way. And if you ever catch a non-free image up and it looks to be replaceable, let me know, and I will tag it. I don't see it as often as you do on existing articles; perhaps I'm reading the wrong articles. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:05, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

When could the deletion tags for the Kyle images be removed now that the people who gave me permission e-mailed wiki? 1Matt20 (talk) 15:12, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't handle that earlier, I'd forgotten about our {{OTRS pending}} tag. Go ahead and mark any of the images that you've forwarded the email for with {{OTRS pending}} and remove the deletion tags. I'd do it for you, but I'm still unclear on which emails you sent to OTRS. If you don't see the images tagged by an OTRS user within a few weeks, then let me know, because something is up - either you sent the email to the wrong address, or they're really backed up and I didn't know it. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:28, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately I believe it's time to delete File:JVO sea.JPG. The uploader of the image hasn't contributed to Wiki for over a year, so no wonder he didn't come to solve this issue. 1Matt20 (talk) 22:00, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Response to note

Hi, I'm a newbie and you left me messages about pictures I uploaded. Perhaps I did this wrong, so hopefully you can correct me if I did. I had the picture owner send the permissions form and copies of the pictures for a number of pictures to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org I then uploaded some of them under owner has given rights (or whatever that is called). So that was Tuesday. Is there a lag? Did I do it right and now just waiting. Sorry this is all very confusing. R. T. Gates (talk) 14:07, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, there is a delay, and sorry for the confusion. Also, just as importantly as the email, can you please indicate the source on each of those pages of the photos? Rob Schenck is very vague; something like "this website" or "that magazine" or "Mr. Schenck gave them to me in person/by email/etc." Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:42, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Great. I'll do that, thanks for your input R. T. Gates (talk) 13:10, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

OK, I see that you tagged the image source as "donated to Wikipedia." Instead, by source, we mean how did you obtain the image, as in, was it sent to you by email, did you get it off a website, scan from a book, or a personal photo collection? How did you come across this image? Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:36, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the help. I may be dense but I'm trying to figure this all out. Here's what has happened so far. Rob Schenck sent me email pictures. He also sent an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with the Declaration of Consent and a copy of each of those pictures for the image database (wherever that is). Figuring that they are now the property of wikipedia, I uploaded the copy that I have to put in my article. I figured the best way to describe that process was "donated by Rob Schenck". What do you think should be done? I'm happy to take instruction in the matter. This whole thing is very confusing to me. I've yet to figure out where to find the pictures that are uploaded. Anyway, let me know what you think and I'll be happy to give it a go. Thanks! R. T. Gates (talk) 05:35, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

That's really all I was looking for. Don't fret the process too much. In this case we just need a source, meaning how you got the image . I'll fix the images from here. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:33, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Thank you. I understand that you will square away the images and any further images that I get in this manner I will write what you put ("emailed to me by license holder and released under this license", and a license). excellent. thanks again.

about File:Musselbed shoal old light.PNG

I'm not sure that this one can be saved, but here's the story. The image as it appears is edited down from one taken from a website where its only credit is to the Archives. I have been to the archives website and have not found a way to retrieve a similar image directly; also I have checked in LoC photo archives without success.

I am certain that the photograph was taken before 1920 because in the year the building was severely damaged and then modified so that it as much larger than it appears in this picture. Therefore I suppose it could be declared PD on the grounds of age. If that is not acceptable, I'm afraid I do not have the time to go down to COllege Park and try to obtain a physical original, not to mention the risk that they don't know who took the picture either. Mangoe (talk) 14:58, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

The information you've provided is good enough for me, can you provide that information (including the website you found it on) on the file page? That way we can remove the no source information. Thanks! Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:59, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Take a look at it now and see if this is acceptable. Mangoe (talk) 21:37, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

That will work in terms of the source. There are still outstanding questions about the license that may come at some point or another, so if you can find the original at the archives it would be great - but I'm not going to tag it for now because it looks legitimate (unless I misunderstand the US archives). Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:41, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your message on my talk page; allow me to copy it here since I'd like to keep the conversation together. You wrote:

There is no reason to upload that locally when we have File:United-nations-peace-sculpture.jpg which you can use. If you don't like the size of the image, then try Wikipedia:Picture tutorial, which will direct you how to resize an image. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:52, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

The reason I did that was because I wanted to save server load and because I wanted to crop the image. I might have been wrong about the server load (I only now became aware of Wikipedia:Don't worry about server performance), but I don't see anything about cropping an image in the tutorial (but maybe that's my bad vision for beams ;-); are you aware of a way to do that? — Sebastian 05:05, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Baidu Creative Commons Permission

Regarding your note about the file permission problem with File:HuangMengfu.jpg, I added a link to the Baidu Baike copyright page that refers to Creative Commons 2.5. File:Central Europe, 814.jpg

Hi Magog the Ogre! have asked user Drilnoth about this, but you can help me also.

Hi Drilnoth! I have uploaded a new image. Can you check is everything o.k. The image File:Central Europe, 814.jpg should have this tag: This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired. And I made it This work has been released into the public domain by the copyright holder. This applies worldwide. Can you fix this if it needs to be fixed?

The image is from the same source as this one.. So it shouldn't be no problem. Can you help? Kebeta (talk) 21:56, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't know why that second image says the US has the 70 years author. I'm going to have to ask about this at commons, and I'll get back to you. Thanks for being so patient and cordial considering the deletion tag, I know it can be frustrating. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:58, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Sea Chart Medana Bay

Hi, regarding File:Sea-Chart,_Medana_Bay-Tanjung,_Lombok_Indonesia.jpeg I am a little confused. When I uploaded this I stated its original source:

  • [PT Wisata Alam Samudera[3]]
  • its commons status: [CC by-sa 3.0] the author [] the image was first used on a Wikitravel Tanjung and it was uploaded to that article on that 27 july2010. Use was released to CC3 by the author and copyright holder PT Wisata Alam Samudera.

The details are published on http://wikitravel.org/shared/Image:Sea-Chart%2C_Medana_Bay-Tanjung%2C_Lombok_Indonesia.JPEG

I tend to get a bit confounded by these upload issues, how could this get flagged and deleted when it was stated in the upload feilds that it was CC# and credited back to author and tagged to a CC domain wiki.

So now what do we do to put it back up again. Felix505 (talk) 13:10, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Felix! Sorry about any problems you've had; I know the licensing can be quite confusing at first. The reason we had to delete the image is that the upload text you provided was in direct contradiction to CC. Specifically, if I remember correctly, the page at Wikitravel says exactly what the page at Wikipedia says: Please do not modify chart information and please do not use this chart for navigational purposes. But CC requires the ability to use derivatives and commercial purposes. That's the reason we had to delete it.
Upon another reading of your text, perhaps you had meant "please don't do modify/use for navigation because it won't be beneficial for your sake" rather than "you are not allowed to modify/use for navigation." Is that right? If so, that means that both I and the deleting administrator misread it, and I apologize for that. If so, please feel free to reupload the file, although I highly suggest you can change the wording of the text (e.g., "map may not be up to date, so navigational use is not recommended; see source image for updates"). You'll also want to include put the {{OTRSpending}} tag on the upload and then follow the instructions on {{Di-no permission}} for sending us proof that the image is released under CC.
