South African ISPs

Hi Meep,

Yes, I'm the administrator who deleted your brief articles about South African ISPs. The reason they were nominated for deletion is that they didn't explain why their subjects were "notable".

In order to qualify for an encyclopedia article, a company must be "notable". Please see WP:Company, the applicable guideline. If any of the ISPs whose articles I deleted satisfies the notability criteria, based on what has been written about them in reliable sources, please let me know and I will restore the articles.

With respect to your other question: I don't go out looking for articles to delete. I review the articles that other editors have identified as possible candidates for speedy deletion. (You can see a list of them at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion#Pages in category.) I can't explain why Vox Telecom was nominated for speedy deletion and Cybersmart wasn't.

The key to writing articles is finding independent reliable sources about the subject and using those sources as references when writing the article. Consider Hetzner for example. The article states that Hetzner is S.A.'s "largest web hosting provider". Has that fact been mentioned in a newspaper or magazine article? You should use that article as a reference. If not, the article may be deleted.

I hope you don't feel discouraged by the deletion of the short articles you wrote. Please do a little research and write longer and better articles about South African ISPs, because (as you pointed out) it is a subject Wikipedia has very little information about. — Malik Shabazz ^Talk/_Stalk 18:49, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the insight Malik, I guess maybe my idea was to lay a framework with stubs then fill them in later when I had more time/energy. I do see your point about references and will do so. Unfortunately the process is tilted against starting one- or two-sentence articles and building on them later. In the future, I recommend that you do that in your user space (in pages that start User:Meepdeedoo/...).

To save you the trouble of rewriting the articles I deleted, I'll restore them and move them to your user space. That way you can develop each article and move it back to "main space" when you think the article is finished. — Malik Shabazz ^Talk/_Stalk 22:05, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

List article?

I have a suggestion that would let you work basic South African ISP information into an article a little more easily. How about starting with a list similiar to List of YouTube personalities. See WP:LISTCOMPANY for a description of a list article for companies. That way you could start out with one solid reference per company and then gradually create individual articles later on. Even after all the ISPs had full individual articles the list would continue to be valuable.

A List of South African internet service providers would be a great idea. For each company, you will need to include a reference that "establish[es] its membership in the list's group" (i.e., shows that it's a South African ISP), so the bar is pretty low. — Malik Shabazz ^Talk/_Stalk 03:27, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey Malik, here's a list of ISP's in South Africa. Was thinking about starting with the Large ISP's, say the top 10 out of 150, I'm sure most of would satisfy WP:CORP in terms of notability. What do you think?

Ronnie Apteker

Hi Meepdeedoo. Interested to see your post about SA's IT industry. Did you know that the Internet Solutions page is a redirect from Ronnie Apteker - the man who founded the company - and yet the IS page makes no mention of him whatever! I became interested in Ronnie Apteker through his work as a film producer, but despite having edited a nice page detailing his achievements other editors keep blocking me by saying he is not notable enough for a page - despite already being voted approval in 2010. Proposed deletion of DoBroadband

The article DoBroadband has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Can't find any indication of notability. Nothing found on a search, barely even any trivial mentions that aren't Wiki mirrors. Own website is dead. Not mentioned at Telkom so not really suitable to be redirected.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
