Welcome to Wikipedia!

I noticed you were new, or at least that nobody has officially welcomed you yet, so let me be the first to say hello, give you some tips, and share a few useful links.

One thing we like to tell newcomers is to be bold! By this we mean don't be afraid to join the rest of us in improving the articles you see here. Most Wikipedians are friendly and patient, willing to give you the same respect you give them, no matter who they are or how long they've been here.

Still, some newcomers find that it's also good to be cautious. You may want to start out small and learn the ropes by fixing typos or just browsing. If so, that's okay, too. You might find it helps to avoid conflicts with other users if you learn the ins and outs before making major changes. If you spot an error on a page, go ahead and fix it! If it's a big edit or a controversial issue, you may want to look at the article's talk page to see if the issue has been discussed in the past, or to post a message to see what other editors think about your proposed change before you make it. It's important to cite references and set personal points of view aside.

Now that you have your own user name, you can sign your discussions by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically stamp your user name, the time, and the date. That will help other users reply to your posts.

Wikipedia is sorely lacking in good detail for a lot of "oldies"-related articles. It's really depressing when you compare the size and number of Britney Spears articles with the articles on Del Shannon or The Platters.

Considering your wealth of knowledge on The Diamonds, I thought you might be able to improve some other articles dealing with the same period. For instance, just punching in a few that come to mind, The Marcels, The Belmonts, and The Silhouettes are woefully incomplete and/or filled with red links that could use new articles to connect to. I'm still not sure if I should answer here or not. Anyway, about all I know of the groups you mentioned is that I have heard about them and have heard them. I would be happy to do the research on the web for additional information, if that is acceptable. Since I'm retired I have the time and the desire to help. min7th 04:21, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

I certainly don't want to push you into anything that doesn't interest you; Wikipedia isn't paying you enough to do anything but have fun. ;)

You don't need to be an expert on the subject to start an article; I'm 28, so the heyday of the Diamonds was a little before my time, but I just wanted to have one less red link in the 41 Original Hits From The Soundtrack Of American Graffiti article. There's lots of information about these bands in books and on the Internet, and all you have to do is compile it. Just remember to use your own words, cite your sources, and maintain a neutral point of view.

Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

help desk question

Hi - I saw your question on the help desk about fixing citations. The general rule is, if you don't know exactly how to do something, do the best you can. In this case, just adding the reference as inline text would be fine, i.e. change the "fact" tag to something like "(source: blah blah blah)". Somebody will come along and turn it into a pretty reference for you. You don't have to know how to do everything since collectively everyone here certainly does. It's far better to add what you do know without worrying about formatting than not to add something because you can't get the formatting right. -- Rick Block (talk) 23:58, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
