GGA
editSomehow GGA was nominated for WPCVG collaboration of the week. Issues
- 49 1999 January
- 53 1999 May
Seem to cover the game if you find time to scan them. I can use a slew of sources from MNSG, so this FA will be a walk in the park. --Zeality 08:03, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- Here and here. Unfortunately, they aren't quite as meaty as the last offerings from NextGen. The preview was in their "Big In Japan" section which is more or less blurbs about significant events or games in Japanese gamer culture. —Mitaphane talk 04:45, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks a bunch. --Zeality 04:39, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
CVG Deletions
editPlease don't "prune" the closed section of the CVG deletions without also adding the deletions you remove to the Archive. Thank you! --PresN 18:27, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, no problem. I didn't know an archive existed. I'll do that. —Mitaphane talk 01:19, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
Start-class lists.
editFirst off, thanks for doing the rather thankless task of assessing articles. A minor comment, but figured it was worth a mention. I noticed this due to watching List of Suikoden III characters, which you recently ranked along with other pages. I don't think I can agree with ranking that page, or some other such lists like as "start class." According to the assessment guidelines, Start class means that the article "provides a moderate amount of information, but many readers will need to find additional sources of information. The article clearly needs to be expanded." The problem is that if anything, some of the articles, especially the list articles, might need pruning if anything, not expansion. Take Talk:Ages of Myst V: End of Ages, for example- I'm not at all familiar with the topic, and it has a cleanup tag, but it seems reasonably "complete" and mainly needs copyediting and formatting. According to the guidelines, "roughly complete" but "needs work" would be B-class, not Start class. (And if I may so myself, I think that the Suiko III list is pretty good as it stands and doesn't even really need much work.)
I don't put too much worry in article assessments; this isn't a pride thing. I just don't want casual browsers of Wikipedia to get the impression that the article has barely begun and that they need to add lots more content, when in fact anything that's been left out has probably been left out for a reason. This goes for other articles, too. SnowFire 23:40, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- If you think the article is B-class feel free to change it. I don't have much time to go into details when assessing articles. The barrier between Start and B classes are the most ambiguous as I see it. The article is through; however there was one thing that prevented me from assessing it to B class, reference sources. I try to look for at least one outside, or in game, reference before I give an article a B-class, especially when comes to articles about fictional characters as they are rife with fan speculation and interpretation. See the FF VII (an its related character article) for good ways to do referencing for fictional character recaps. —Mitaphane ?|! 03:16, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- Eh. I'd feel odd changing it; I'm a little bit too close to the article, having basically written most of the content and rewritten/edited the merged content. Also, I'm not a member of the CVG project. As for adding references, I dunno- the game itself is the reference, and as long as the events are hewed to pretty closely (that is, no seeming-OR or synthesis that isn't well-cited), I don't see the problem. I'd trust Romeo & Juliet itself more for sourceing than the Cliffs Notes on it.
- As for the general case... I don't think references are a good tool to separate B-class and Start articles. The assessment guidelines say concerning a B-class article that "Nonetheless, it has significant gaps or missing elements or references, needs substantial editing for English language usage and/or clarity, balance of content, or contains other policy problems such as copyright, Neutral Point Of View (NPOV) or No Original Research (NOR). With NPOV a well written B-class may correspond to the "Wikipedia 0.5" or "usable" standard." (Template:Grading scheme) It seems to me at least that basically good articles that need references are clearly B-class- or for that matter, bad articles that are still reasonably complete. B-class seems the general umbrella for most of Wikipedia, in other words. I'd only assign Start class myself to articles that are obviously incomplete, where the problem is a paucity of information and not the verifiability of that information. To use Suikoden III again as an example, the article as of December I'd have classified as Start class- there's no gameplay section, nothing on the setting, nothing on the soundtrack or staff, a woefully short awards/critical reception section, and so on. It's more than a stub, but the article is clearly not complete nor close to comprehensive. SnowFire 04:13, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- To pull out one of the big policies, WP:V, "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth". Keeping that in mind, I assuming much of the article's information was added from people who are reciting things from memory after having played the game. While that has produced an article that is most likely complete and true to the game's story, there is no way to verify the information with out having played the video game. Without having references to lookup, this means the article's accuracy lies on the assumption that all the editors were correct in remembering the game's fictional details. To me, that is a serious issue with verifiability. It might be overly pedantic to site obvious things known in a game's story line, but doing so ensures a accurate article. For example, in the article UNATCO I read a lot of details that sounded true from what I remembered from the game. It wasn't until I went back to the game's text that I realized a lot of the details weren't ever mentioned it the game; they were editor's interpretation of the story. I ended up having to gut a lot of information in the article because there was no way to prove it outside my interpretation of the story.
- Over at CVG, we have a assessment sub project. I kicked it over there to get a 3rd opinion about the article. If another editor agrees with your opinion he'll bump it up to B-class. —Mitaphane ?|! 20:45, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
Comments concerning wikipedia entry for TPG League
editMitaphane,
First I hope I'm doing this right. These two links are reference for TPG League:
http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=8a7161a381d03482dd08cd3ea6d6939b&threadid=36685
We are listed on the offical game developer's forums as league right next to CAL, which has a wikipedia entry here.
http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=1096
RSC Forums are probably the largest race sim forums in the world and we are the only league with our own sub-catagory, that's not insignificant. The league has also been a past contributor to AutoSimSports news, which is a large monthly eZine devoted to sim racing, but I would have to find a past issue in a pdf to submit that to support the claim that we are "not insignificant".
So how do I dispute the deletion or otherwise fight city hall?
Sbopple 14:38, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- Find that PDF and use that as a reference. Generally, blogs and website forums aren't usually considered reliable sources around here, but an online magazine would have more weight. It looks like the article has been deleted (it had the Prod tag on it for more than 5 days), but if you talk the admin who deleted it you might be able to get him to restore the article based on your more reliable sources. Good luck on writing a good article! —Mitaphane ?|! 21:19, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
Turok 2 review
editI noticed on the CVG magazine page, that you have issue 47, December 1998 for Next Generation Magazine that has a Turok 2: Seeds of Evil review. Could you take some excerpts from it? Stuff about the graphics, multiplayer, AI, etc. Thanks. Thunderbrand 17:43, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
- How about the high-res scanned pages from the review instead: page1 & page2. If you don't feel like transcribing it, I can feed it through my OCR program but the results for even clear scans are sometimes shakey. —Mitaphane ?|! 01:26, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Heh, I guess that would be easier. Thanks! It should come in handy for the collab. Thunderbrand 03:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- I can't access the pages now. I keep getting "The connection was reset" error message in Firefox, and a similar one in IE. Thunderbrand 22:01, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
- Fixed. A power outage around here knocked my server off line. Everything should be fine now. —Mitaphane ?|! 00:53, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Victorious Boxers
editHello, I just happened upon the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computer_and_video_games/Magazines by checking out the what links here on the Victorious Boxers page. First I'd like to say that I really appreciate the fact that there are users out there that are willing to do something like this. In fact I have a good stack of video game magazines that I think I'll go through to add onto the list to help out.
Anyway, back on subject, I was hoping I could bother you for information about the December 2001 issue of Next Generation. Specifically any information about Victorious Boxers. Coming across actual hardcopy references for a game from 2001 is kind of hard and I would really appreciate any information you'd be willing to provide.
One more question, I order to participate in the project, we simply add any unlisted magazines that we may have and the specific reviews/news within each issue? Or if there are duplicates, place our username in the contact cell? I'm asking because I have a couple years worth of PSM and a small stack of GameInformer and OPM here and there. (Guyinblack25 22:21, 21 February 2007 (UTC))
- Here's the copy you requested.
- As far as the other question goes, you're exactly right. See lead section at WP:CVG/M for any more details you don't already know. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated for the project. —Mitaphane ?|! 01:15, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, another quick question if I could. Do you happen to know the page number of that article. I'll start going through what issues I have of what and catalog what information is in which issue. Thanks again. (Guyinblack25 04:20, 22 February 2007 (UTC))

System Shock
editHi. I've been working on the System Shock article recently, but am having trouble finding sources for a future Reception section. Locating reviews for a 1994 game is a fairly impossible task, as I'm sure you can guess. However, I noticed that you listed a System Shock review as being in the February 1995 issue of Next Generation Magazine. Would it be possible to scan it, as you did with the other requests? If not, some excerpts about their general opinion of the game would be highly appreciated. Thanks. JimmyBlackwing 21:30, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
- Here's the review from page 95. Unfortunately, its not much more than a blurb. This was from issue 2 of the magazine. The first few issues seemed to take the approach of reviewing a lot of games in as short amount of time as possible. I hope this is able to help in some way. Good luck with your work on the article! —Mitaphane ?|! 23:36, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- Many thanks! JimmyBlackwing 03:15, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Magazine request
editHey there,
I'm currently writing List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and I saw you are the Wikipedian to contact in Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Magazines for Next Generation Magazine issues 12 (December 1995) and 18 (June 1996), which have information about the game.
So… how does this work? Do you have the magazine scanned? Taric25 02:41, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Image:Game_Genies.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Game_Genies.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Sean Daugherty (talk) 14:56, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- I've send an email to the web site from which I got the image. Depending on the response I will update the image tag (or mark for deletion) accordingly. —Mitaphane ?|! 23:29, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
Magazine request
editHello, Mitaphane! I've been working on a development history of The Elder Scrolls series and more generally on the The Elder Scrolls series articles. I've been having a bit of trouble finding good sources for the early titles, but I noticed that you had a series of useful sources which I would like, namely: Issue 11 of NGM, with its Daggerfall preview; Issue 24 of NGM, with its Daggerfall review; Issue 34 of NGM, with its Battlespire preview; Issue 41 of NGM, with its Battlespire review; Issue 45 of NGM, with its Redguard preview; and Issue 50 of NGM, with its Redguard review. It would be so kind of you if you could scan some (or all) of these for me. Of course, if you can't, or don't want to, that's all right as well. Thanks for your time! Geuiwogbil 05:58, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- I've got your back:
- Daggerfall
- Battlespire
- Redguard
- Best of luck to ya! —Mitaphane ?|! 00:56, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks kindly! Geuiwogbil 04:16, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry to bother you again, but it seems like the Daggerfall preview is missing some pages. It just cuts off in mid-sentence.Geuiwogbil 22:46, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Aye, it appears I did miss some; it's now updated. I wasn't expected as big of previews as these games got. I hope it helps out your work.
- Thanks again, sorry for the hassle. ^_^ Geuiwogbil 02:10, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Magazine request
editHi, I noticed you have issue 45 (September 1998) of Next Generation Magazine. This has a Final Fantasy VIII preview in it, which I would like scanned. Thankyou. Also, there should be some news regarding the game ranging from the May 1998 issue to January 1999. I would like any of this, but it would be better for you to look after the preview is scanned - it's not that important. This information will soon end up on Wikipedia once I organize it all. Thanks again. --Teggles 11:39, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Looking over the issues, it appears there's no other significant news in the time span you mentioned; there are two trivial mentions about the game being in production and its release date, nothing else. Here is the preview you requested:
"rm bot flood"
editJust an RC patroller stopping by to say hello. Holy foobar! No kidding! Wow... Shalom Hello 15:33, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Looking Glass and Terra Nova
editHi, it's me again. Continuing my attempts to improve Looking Glass Studios coverage on Wikipedia, I've started compiling information for a complete rewrite of the Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri article. I noticed on the CVG Magazines page that issue 2 of Next Generation Magazine contained a feature called "Through the Looking Glass", which might contain useful information for Terra Nova, System Shock or other LGS games. Also, you listed issue 19 as having a review of Terra Nova, which would be extremely helpful. If you have time, a scan or transcript of these would be great. Thanks. JimmyBlackwing 00:44, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Here you go. Sorry for the delay, other projects and work keep me from being more active on here. Unfortunately, the Through the Looking Glass was just a sub header for a feature Movers & Shakers which wasn't more than just blurbs about current happenings in the gaming industry. You probably won't find it too helpful. The review for Terra Nova is also included. Good luck on the work! —Mitaphane 02:32, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks a bunch for the scans. Unfortunately, the links seem to be broken right now. I'll try reaching them in a few hours to see if it's a server-side glitch. If you end up having to re-upload them, sorry for the inconvenience. JimmyBlackwing 06:00, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- They work now. Again, many thanks for the scans. JimmyBlackwing 18:35, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, a power outage knocked my server offline. For the most part the images should be online always if you ever need them. —Mitaphane 22:32, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Nobuo Uematsu.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Nobuo Uematsu.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Master of Magic
editHi, I am currently looking for materials for the game Master of Magic. I noticed on the CVG Magazines page that issue 1 of Next Generation Magazine has an article on said game. If you have the time, can I have the scans or transcript of said article to look through? Do you perchance have any other magazines which has articles on Master of Magic but which was unlisted on the CVG Magazines page? Thank you. Jappalang 01:16, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Super Mario RPG lists
editCurrently, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has two lists pertaining to it (List of characters in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). User:TTN decided it would be best to merge the lists into the main article and split Smithy Gang into those articles. I recently merged Smithy Gang into the list of chatacters by removing the non-notable characters, and I have asserted that a cameo section in the list of characters is valid, per Wikipedia:Trivia sections and Wikipedia:Handling trivia that uses Alex Trebek#Cameos as a good example. I have suggested that we rename the articles per Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves to something along the lines of Characters of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and World of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Mushroom Kingdom (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) just like Characters of Final Fantasy VIII and World of Final Fantasy VI or Gaia (Final Fantasy VII). I believe if these articles are to evolve beyond a non-notable list, they should be renamed. For example, List of Final Fantasy VII locations was merged into Gaia (Final Fantasy VII), because a World article is notable, but a simple list of locations is not. That is why there are other secions of the article to make it a World article. It simply has not been renamed yet.
TTN believes the citations in the development and reception sections of the list of locations, books and magazines, are trivial sources. When I added that the 3D perspective of the game is reminicent of Equinox to the main article, TTN removed it since my souce was "the opinions of the Nintendo Power player's guide writers". Although it was actually Nintendo Power magazine, I do believe a magazine is a reliable source, and I gave a page from Next Generation Magazine which also said the same thing. In addition, I was surprized that TTN said that it was from the players guide, since he claims to own the players guide for the game. He has not verified this, since I asked him for citations in May, "Could you look in the back of the Player's Guide and tell me what “types” of … Magic? I forgot what they call it in the game … well, anyways, what types of Special Attack or whatever it is (actually, could you find out what it's called?) there are? I remember some vaguely when I owned the guide like “Fire”, “Jump”, “Electricity?”, etc. Could you provide a citation, like the page number with a quote in context?" TTN replied that he was going to "get to it" (User talk:TTN/Archive 5#List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). TTN claims the player's guide is "at the bottom of a box that's behind at least five others in a cramped space". Seeing that TTN did not recognize that the page was not from the player's guide when I provided a scan of the page in question from Nintendo Power shocked me. However, I have continued to assume good faith by not questioning TTN's honesty.
Per Wikipedia:Consensus#Consensus can change, I have offered five different reasonable, temporary compromises that might integrate my idea with TTN's.
- Go over the list of characters so we can delete non–notable characters
- Rename the articles by following the steps at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves.
- Cut down the geography section list of locations by cutting it into the regional maps the adventures use when traveling from one to another. I can get pictures and write the fair use rationals, and someone can cut down the text that has no citation and does not allude to other media.
- Write the concept and creation and reception sections for the list of characters
- Write the concept and creation section for the main article
TTN rejected my compromise because it still keeps the articles. I agreed I would consider a redirect, but Wikipedia:Article size does not allow that, since the list of locations is currently 82 KB long. Instead, I agreed to help cut down the geography section that is the bulk of the article, but TTN rejected that as well because TTN states, "I am not interested in working on the article in regards to improving it." and "get past this "having sources automatically means that this information is good" mentality." TTN states, "I don't think they have or will ever assert notability." I have replied with, "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, so if you don't think the articles will ever assert notability, we cannot yet know this, per Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions#I don't like it.
Would you please take a look at Talk:Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and give us your thoughts? Taric25 01:32, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Request for Magazine
editI'm currently engaged in Featuring the Final Fantasy Tactics article and is in need of several printed sources. Useful ones I see in your possession are in Next Generation Magazine issues #22 (October 1996), which is a preview and #40 (April 1998), which is a review. I hope you can help me out in this, if you have the time and will. My many thanks in advance. — Blue? 20:52, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
Next Generation Magazine Issue April 1998
editHi,
I just stumbled upon the WikiProject page you have with the various video game magazines, and I was wondering if you have the April 1998 issue of Next Generation magazine? I love the article, 'What the Hell Happened?' when I first read it, but unfortunately, I believe that the issue that I had was thrown out. Do you know of a place online where I could find the article in its entirety? Thanks.TheAxeGrinder (talk) 00:36, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Mario 64 Magazine requests
editHello, I was browsing through the VG Magazine page and was hoping I could request multiple issues of Next Generation Magazine for the Super Mario 64 article. The issues I saw on the list were #14 Feb 1996, #20 Aug 1996, #21 Sept 1996, and #49 Jan 1999. I understand that this may be a large request, and I would like to state that there is no major hurry. Thank you very much. (Guyinblack25 talk 17:37, 3 December 2007 (UTC))
