Hi I received your mensage today

This blocked user is asking that their block be reviewed:

Contribuidorconta (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))

Request reason:

  • Appeal: I understood this copyright law for the first time, I understood the explanation given by the user Moneytrees. I thought that putting the site as a reference was essential and showed who had produced a certain number of sentences or a text, leading users to the owner's website. But, now I fully understand that this is outside the parameters and against the current copyright law and that Wikipedia follows, I have two and a half years living here and I discovered the function of this legal rule. I promise not to disrespect this rule anymore. I await your reply. Contribuidorconta (talk) 03:00, 23 April 2022 (UTC) 2600:387:C:5019:0:0:0:A (talk) 21:02, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes I saw this, I'm thinking about a response. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 21:03, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

I've now responded at your talk, by the way. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 23:35, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

I saw 1084369243 before you hid the previous diffs, and it made me a bit confused... I swear I learned (somewhere) that translations were substantially original on their own to be a new copyright (probably not books, but definitely with song lyrics, as with those even just writing the lyrics can be a new copyright and I know that one because Google was sued by a lyrics website for using a lyrics provider that just copied the lyrics off of other websites).

Is that not the case (for this situation)? Or is this just how Wikipedia's policy works? (due to needing legal certainty, I presume) – 2804:F14:C060:8A01:981A:B565:8AFD:EF82 (talk) 02:36, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

It would make sense if that were the case, but it is not- translations are derivative works of what was originally translated. You'll need to get the original author's permission or have the content be under an appropriate license if you want to use a translation of it- Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright#Derivative_works explains in more detail. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 03:44, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Interesting 🤔, thanks for the link. – 2804:F14:C060:8A01:981A:B565:8AFD:EF82 (talk) 03:51, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
No problem, and to add onto what I said before, as someone who has had real life experience dealing with it, song copyright is a whole other world of convoluted nonsense. Mechanical licensing and compulsory licensing plus public performance and Work for hire, disputes over who actually has the rights to the song, but to have a claim to rights you must contribute something copyrightable to it!!! etc. If you could give me an example of that google lawsuit maybe I could give you some more insight as to what happened there. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 04:30, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Well I have a link to the video of a lawyer reading the case: youtu.be/VYqV5aReGjE?t=247
Although it's been years since I watched it and I have no idea what became of that case. – 2804:F14:C060:8A01:84D5:BACD:87D2:116C (talk) 06:23, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
As a short description, it was a case where the Genius website added special characters to their transcriptions of songs, so that they could prove that Google was copying the lyrics from their website. Although in reality Google doesn't produce the lyrics, instead they get it through third party providers (listed at the bottom like "Source: SourceName") and it was one of these providers that was copying from Genius.
But really, as far as I remember that was it, the whole case. Although to repeat, I don't know how that lawsuit ended. – 2804:F14:C060:8A01:84D5:BACD:87D2:116C (talk) 06:42, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
It was dismissed in 2020 essentially because Genius didn't own the rights to the lyrics and their transcriptions were derivative works of the original songs, so they could not sue for copyright reasons. Here's a Reuters article from last month on an appeal that got rejected. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:56, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for revdel

Thanks for handling the revdel on Bublichki! I think the first two revisions of the page don't actually contain any text that violates copyright, though; I only introduced the offending material in revision 1069155819. I could be wrong, of course. Lkb335 (talk) 22:30, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

@Lkb335 Oh, I think I was looking at the initial revision and got confused. I've now unhidden the first two deletions, thank you for pointing it out. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 22:33, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Repeated copyvio concerns

Per WP:CVREPEAT seeing as you're on the list of admins familiar with copyright problems and the fact you reached out to me before, I'd like to request your help.

I'm concerned about user Librarian Success repeatedly making copyvio's. They have been warned extensively without response and continue to post content in violation of copyright policy.

Thanks in advance. ★Ama TALK CONTRIBS 14:53, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

@Amadeus1999 Thank you for brining the user to my attention, I've now blocked them. If a user has three or four warnings for copyright violations and are continuing to paste content in from other sources, it's usually time to consider blocking them. Emailing the user isn't necessary though, unless there is something that suggests emailing them is a better idea then trying to get their attention on their talk page. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:04, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
@Moneytrees: Ah thanks for the feedback. It just occurred to me as sort of like a 'last measure' to reach out to the person before they'd be blocked, considering maybe they just didn't see the Talk page notifs or such. Then again I'm not sure exactly how likely that is but I'll keep in mind not to in the future. ★Ama TALK CONTRIBS 20:23, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Rewrite issue

Recently I am trying to rewrite Sekul Islam. I was editing that but I thought Earwig's Copyvio Detector will be useful so I was using copyvio detector to see if there is any copyvio problem. But I can't solve copyvio problem because it shows department names in red color and I can't change the wording of department names because these name is literal. I tried to remove some red color writing but these issue still arise. Can you please see the article and tell me what can I do? (Note- For other articles I saw red colors texts but I ignored them because they were statement, for example Murad Takla has red colored text on the facebook comment and that is okay. But the recent rewrite article has so many red colored text and this made me confused. So I wrote that message to you to clear my confusion.) Mehedi Abedin 15:47, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

@Mehediabedin Earwig will highlight proper nouns and titles, which you can safety ignore as they are not copyrightable. I recommend turning off the "Use search engine" option, since that will just get you websites that have copied from Wikipedia (we call those "Mirrors"). Note that Earwig will only compare English sources to the article, so if you translated content from another language into English and then added it to the article, Earwig won't detect it. To get around this, you can manually compare what the article says to a translation of a source, or you can translate the content of the source into English and then paste it into User:Moneytrees/dummy and then put the url of the dummy page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Moneytrees/dummy) into the "URL comparison" field. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:28, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Oh, it looks like you're already doing that at User:Mehediabedin/sandbox/Copyvio. Do you need revision deletions there? Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:37, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

@Moneytrees: I don't think it would be needed. Thanks. I will continue to rewrite articles. I already rewrote 15 articles. Mehedi Abedin 18:44, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

Revdel request at Samuel Guthrie (physician)

Possible copyright violation [1] [2]. Dr.Pinsky (talk) 16:28, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

@Dr.Pinsky Copypatrol picked up on this too. Looking further the text's origin is a book that is in public domain, so I have re added it with proper attribution. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 16:51, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. Dr.Pinsky (talk) 17:02, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
The quote is need at the beginning of the page as an introduction Alice.Piccolomini (talk) 19:06, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
@Alice.Piccolomini introductory "quotes" aren't needed for Wikipedia articles. It's better if it is in a part of the article that makes more sense, such as a section talking about his death. Also Wyatt Tyrone Smith having that content there is not plagiarism, public domain sources can be verbatim copied as long as they are attributed, which the text has been. That said I don't think it is the best idea to base the majority of an article on century old sources, which may be very outdated. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:14, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Block?

Hallo Moneytrees, I saw the block and I have to say I am surprised, I think a warning would have sufficed instead of this. I have read and understand the issues better now, especially with the machine translation now. Do I need to make a request somewhere? Gryffindor (talk) 08:53, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

@Gryffindor Post an unblock template ({{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}) on your talk. I will admin the block is harsh; part of my rationale for making it is that, with a long history of issues like this clear assurance that copyright issues won't happen again is needed. Cleaning up copyright violations is a serious and time consuming matter, so I need to be serious with the blocks I make. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 11:10, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Uncopyable material

I can't copy texts from a source in Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital. I am scanning the article with earwig copyvio detector so I need to copy and translate. Is there any way to copy from the source? The source is here. Mehedi Abedin 17:45, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

@Mehediabedin Some webpages have some weird layout that prevents them from being highlighted and copied; I can't copy it either. You'd have to manually translate and the article to compare it. I'm not fluent in Bengali, so I can't help you with that, sorry. However, if you can't copy from it I'd say that means the odds of you previously coping from it are low. CCI questions

Hi, I am getting back into the swing of things here on Wikipedia (seems I'm a sucker for punishment) and am seeing your name everywhere when it comes to CCI—thanks for writing User:Moneytrees/CCI guide! I'm going to try to chip away at a couple CCIs but frankly there's so much to review that the task appears pretty daunting. To me rewriting close paraphrasing is the most time-intensive part; it's easy to chop stuff out of articles, but much more work to maintain some level of readability and coherence.

Is there much of a concerted community effort to tackle CCIs these days? I have been away for a while now and still don't know what I don't yet know, if that makes any sense. /wiae /tlk 12:29, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

@Wiae It's great to see you back. There are some coordinated cleanups once and a while and the community at large is much more aware of copyright issues and willing to help out. The most active place for coordination with CCI and general copyright cleanup is probably the #wpcci channel on the Wikipedia Discord server. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:30, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Dead url

I was going to rewrite Atish Dipankar University of Science & Technology. I got three dead links but wayback machine couldn’t archive them. So I keep them as reference. I remember these three links I used in the article only mention name or title in the article and it doesn’t infringe copyright. What do you think? Should I keep the link? Do you know another way to archive these three urls? (Note: I have done rewrite all of my article. Now I am rewriting articles I made long so I need more time to do things). Mehedi Abedin 16:09, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

@Mehediabedin There are some other archive sites (https://archive.ph/ for example) but if Archive.org doesn't have them than those are also unlikely to have them. WP:KDL has some advice on issues like this and notes "Do not delete a citation just because it has been tagged with dead link..." so it's fine to keep those links, unless you find another live source that verifies the content. Since you say you're done with your rewrites, I'll try and knock Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/20220331 out. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:40, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

@Moneytrees: I done with my created article. But Cox's Bazar Beach, Cassino Beach and there are some article created by others... I have to rewrite them. So please remember about the articles not created by me. Mehedi Abedin 18:45, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

I'm just seeing how long it normally takes for an admin to look at a new CCI request. I requested one and it's been a bit over 24 hours. SL93 (talk) 02:26, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) There's no set time. CCI's are for more of long term/widespread issues, so by the time something makes it there we're more concerned with being thorough than an immediate response, but someone should take a look at it soon. VernoWhitney (talk) 15:19, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the information. SL93 (talk) 15:28, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

Firefly's Bot and CCI stats

Do you know if I'm going to mess up the CCI stats count if I list the VRT subpage at {{CCIlist}} since it's not the same format as a normal one? VernoWhitney (talk) 15:17, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

@VernoWhitney Maybe, but that page hasn't been updated in about a month and the WikiProject Tropical cyclones CCI didn't mess things up. Firefly could probably give a better answer. Also, it's really nice to see one of the old guard back around- the the Wikipedia Discord has a #wpcci channel where some coordination for copyright cleanup is done, I recommend joining it. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 20:45, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. I just figured you were more active at CCI and might know (but obviously he weighed in below). Also thanks for the pointer--I don't use Discord a lot but I'll try to get on that today. VernoWhitney (talk) 11:56, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
@VernoWhitney no you won't break anything, that page loads data from the CCI pages directly rather than using CCIlist. Hmm... if it's not loading properly then that's something I need to fix (again...). It's a bit of a Heath Robinson contraption...) :) firefly ( t · c ) 09:55, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. VernoWhitney (talk) 11:41, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Done

My rewrite task is done. Please review the articles. But if you find still copyright violation in any article that means I accidentally ignored the article or sentences of the article. Also there are some article shows copyright violation in earwig because of names of organizations, title etc. So please be considerate while reviewing. Also there are articles I didn’t rewrite. I prefer them to be remain same so you can undo them. Mehedi Abedin 11:34, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

Request for Administrator

Hi, Moneytrees. I don't know if I'm allowed to do this here but I'd like to request that you nominate me as an administrator. I haven't done any work on Wikipedia under my current Username and I know that might not do me any good but I am just interested in viewing deleted articles and this is only allowed by administrators. I have no problem helping Wikipedia in any way I can but my main goal is viewing deleted articles. I know my lack of work may make me look untrustworthy but I promise I am a respectable Wikipedia user. Please nominate me and thank you for your time. @Shelbyville Manhattan please read Wikipedia:Really simple guide to requests for adminship; experience and demonstrated trust is required to become one. Simply stating you want to see deleted articles simply because you are "interested" won't cut it. Is there a certain article you want to see? Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 21:50, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
Hello,Moneytrees and thank you for responding. Yes there are a few specific articles I am interested in viewing such as the article for Hole Patrol which is an album by the band Steel Panther. I would also like to see the article for Erik Brodreskift who was a Black metal musician back in the day. But I am also eager to see all deleted articles if at all possible. Thanks again for your time and for responding. Shelbyville Manhattan (talk) 00:26, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
@Shelbyville Manhattan Well, you are in luck; archive.org, a website that saves old versions of web pages, has saved the Hole Patrol and Erik Brodreskift. That website generally has captures of most articles deleted by discussion. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 04:18, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

CCI

Thank for taking a look at TDKR Chicago 101's contributions. I knew that it was bad, but I didn't realize that it was that bad. I wonder how no one has raised issues before me and how his contributions made it to ITN multiple times with so many copyright violations. I wonder if someone should mention it to ITN. SL93 (talk) 03:52, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

@SL93 The violations were more close paraphrasing based, which Earwig is not so great at picking up. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that a score of 15-20% means that there are no issues, even though they really should be looking at the text is highlighted, not the percentage. I personally don't think this needs to be brought up at ITN; as long as TDKR is aware with the copyright issues with his edits and does not repeat them in the future, the issues with his current editing have been adressed.
