AFL season article naming convention

As a participant of WikiProject AFL I thought you might be interested in this. I have started a vote to get a consensus on the naming convention for AFL season articles. You can participate in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject AFL#AFL season article naming convention. Cheers. Remy B 13:11, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Can you please take a look at [1]. Looks like all PD-Aus should be taken down. Tintin (talk) 07:09, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

I saw that you have removed the Hollies pic from the Bradman article. The link above contains the pictures that I uploaded, four of which came from the same site (http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au), atleast two - possibly three - were taken in England. Should I remove them too ? Tintin (talk) 04:37, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. So all except Bill Brown goes. Tintin (talk) 05:56, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi I still am not sure what all the secrecy about the username is, but anyway, you might want to check out the Esperanza calendar (September).

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Moondyne, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in April, we will keep you updated about the results. Because you are a new member, you are not able to vote in these elections, but you will be more than welcome to take part in the elections in June.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC Tutorial written by one of our members. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

I'd also like to welcome you. —       nathanrdotcom (TCW) 15:23, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Perth dab notice

The reason I added it is that Perth, Australia redirects to Perth, Western Australia, which is the most obvious, but not the only, Perth in Australia. If the link is not present at the top of Perth WA's page, other options are:

 1. Convert Perth, Australia to a disambig page
 2. Redirect Perth, Australia to Perth.
 3. Re-add Perth, Western Australia's dab notice, and change it to specifically link to Perth, Tasmania.

I think the notice I placed was the least invasive way. -- Chuq 05:24, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm happy with option #1 - but others may not! Maybe implement it and see how it goes. -- Chuq 10:06, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
I recommend Perth, Australia:

Snottygobble 11:57, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Why have a notice at the top of the article saying what redirects here? If someone typed in Perth, Western Australia that's got to be what they want to see. Yes/No? -- Moondynetalk 12:07, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
If someone typed in "Perth, Western Australia", then there is no chance of misunderstanding, and there is no need for disambiguation. But if someone typed in "Perth, Australia", hoping to reach Perth, Tasmania, but was instead redirected to Perth, Western Australia, that is a problem. In such situations there are two options:
 1. convert Perth, Australia from a redirect to a disambiguation page.
 2. leave Perth, Australia as a redirect to Perth, Western Australia, but provide a redirect disambiguation telling people where to go if they actually wanted Perth, Tasmania.
The second option is usually chosen when, as in this case, one article is much more prominent than the other. Snottygobble 12:17, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Western Australian secession movement

Sweet! A few comments:

 1. I think "Secession movement in Western Australia" would be a more standard article title, although being more standard doesn't necessarily make it better. Your call.
 2. Since a "coffer" is literally a treasure chest where pirates hoard their ill-gotten riches, the term "federal coffers" reads as slightly pejorative to me. Can we come up with an NPOV replacement?

Snottygobble 12:36, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

 • Nice aticle I like coffer it fits well with the plundering of WA by Eastern States. Seriously more information on the promises made to WA for joining the Federation would help expand the reason against later in the article. Gnangarra 13:33, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Re two referenda: no idea. It's news to me.
By the way, there have been a number of cases where a part of WA tried to secede from the rest of the state/colony. In 1900 when it looked like WA wouldn't join the federation, the goldfields looked to break away from WA so that it could join the federation itself. Also in 1900 Albany and the South Coast petitioned the Governor for secession. In 1956 there was a proposal for WA's north west to secede and join the Northern Territory, and it was came up again in 2001 as a threat if the one-vote-one-value legislation got up.
I notice that the secession movement is still alive and well. Kerry Stokes called for WA to secede in 2003, and just last year Stan Gervas published "The great scam: 100 years of federation and what it has cost Western Australia".

Hi Ian, as an admin with quite a few DYKs, I was wondering if you were interested in updating this. Congratulations. Snottygobble 03:18, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

en.wikipedia.org data is no longer replicated to the tool server, so Kate's Tool and Interiot's Tool are basically not working. To get an accurate figure, you need to use Interiot's javascript tool. You have 10065 edits. Snottygobble 03:37, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome. Just to give you the full story, there's a big red box at the bottom of Interiot's talk page that says
Starting Apr12, toolserver replication for enwiki was completely down, and toolserver data appears to be old. DaBpunkt managed to get replication working again, but 1) it is not replicating quickly enough to keep up with real-time, and 2) there is a bug in the replication, and most data replicated from April 12 on is corrupt, and should not be relied upon. Both issues are being worked on.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
 1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
 2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
 3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
 4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
 5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Hi Ian (?), it's a bit tricky with that, because everyone concerned in that incident (myself included) would be able to verify it, but because it has not got into the news, it's a bit hard finding secondary sources to back up the claims. But I'm fine with leaving it off. Cheers. --Sumple (Talk) 04:29, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Wittenoom

I saw your edits to Wittenoom, Western Australia, and thought I'd blue the red link to Edward Wittenoom. Also did Charles Wittenoom, and turned Wittenoom into a disambig. In the process I discovered that Frank was Edward's brother, not his son, so made a correction to the town article. If you're planning on writing Frank Wittenoom, there's some decent info here, and I can tell you his full name was Frederick Francis Burdett Wittenoom. Snottygobble 00:44, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes if noticing it sitting on a bookshelf at Serendipity Books counts as "seen". Otherwise, no. Snottygobble 01:55, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
BTW, I made Wittenoom Gorge, Western Australia a redirect to Wittenoom, Western Australia as the two are inextricably linked. Was this the right thing to do? -- Moondyne ≡ talk 01:19, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Adam Carr

Can you explain why you are reverting the Adam Carr article? It's been deleted before, and its new author is an enemy of Carr's who has made many personal attacks on him. Carr is not himself any more notable than the tens of thousands of political aides. His website may be impressive, but that doesn't make him notable. In any case, there's no reason for a revert war. -Will Beback 07:34, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Edith Dircksey Cowan Memorial images

Great, thanks! If there was ever an article that needed images, that was it.

Re: your creation of Commons:Category:Edith Cowan, I think the done thing in cases like this is to create a commons article on the person, rather than a category. In this case I had already created article Commons:Edith Cowan, and I have now added the memorial images to the galleries on that page. If you agree that there is no need for Category:Edith Cowan, you might like to tag it for deletion.

Finally, your Commons user page asks users to send you messages at Wikipedia rather than Commons, but rather unhelpfully provides a link to post a message to the talk page of your old account. Considering your old talk page is a redirect now, I have no idea what will happen if someone actually tries to use it.

Blnguyen's RfA

File:Atlanticpuffin4.jpg Hello Moondyne. Thank you for spending so much time in preparing and nominating me for my request for adminship with such a enthusiastic, gracious and effective nomination, as well as defending me when necessary and updating the tally to keep things running smoothly. Of course, I feel that your statement in my Editor review was also influential, as it was quoted by many RfA participants. The final overwhelming and flattering result of (160/1/0) was in large part, I feel, due to your nomination statement, and leaves me in a position of having to live up to a high standard of community expectation. Of course, your help to me when I started out with Wikipedia was very important in helping reach the point where I am now and if I make any procedural mistakes with my tools, feel free to point them out. Of course, I look forward to continuing to work with you in the future. Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 04:12, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Metadata

Hi Ian, I'm just about to start the addition of metadata to the Indian criketer bios using AWB. Any advice? Srikeit(talk ¦ ) 17:02, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I see you're tackling the new project also. There must be an easier way :( -- Moondynetalk 01:57, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed your edits to some of the cricketers on my watchlist. Looked into it, and decided to metadata-ise my article contributions. Big job. It's surprising how long it takes to manually extract this info from an article. If only we had some metadata we could automate the process of entering the metadata! Snottygobble 02:03, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
By the time we've finished a clever person will get around to writing a javascript app or something which scrapes the data out of the article. You should be able to get the lastname, first name from the categories and a string search in the opening sentence for date and places of birth/death. 80-90% success I reckon. -- Moondynetalk 02:10, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
Probably. But that clever person will have spent longer writing their app than I will have spent manually bringing my contribs into line. Snottygobble 02:18, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Mackie

I noticed that a William Mackie was a Lieutenant Governor of Gambia from 1838-1839. Coincidence? -- Moondynetalk 05:18, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

It's hard to believe that Honnibal would have missed it when he wrote the Australian Dictionary of Biography article. But you never know; it's worth a close look I reckon. Snottygobble 05:28, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Nope, sorry. I'll have a look in my Western Australian Parliamentary Handbook, but its unlikely to have extensive biographical data on him. The ideal source to check would be the Dictionary of West Australians. I'll have a look next time I visit my public library. Snottygobble 05:51, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Metadata again

Hi Moondyne, I was going through some of the topics of my talk page & came across your comment about AWB. I'm sorry I totally missed it then. Anyway 10 days too late, I'll still answer the question. AWB doesn't have any huge advantages in adding metadata & the time taken is nearly the same. The only advantage is that you can load up the category for the metadata to be added & can reduce the number of clicks to reach the next page. Also it has an option of "Insert Metadata template" which makes work marginally faster. I have been a bit busy & so haven't been adding it for the past few days. I'll probably resume again soon. BTW I was chatting with Blnguyen the other day about how Cricket acivity seems to have dropped. Seems like we are not doing anything but updating stats & removing the occasional POV additions. Anyway drop me a line sometime & tell me what you think. Cheers --Srikeit (Talk | Email) 18:00, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

If you do write an article on EB-L, you might like to bear in mind that he has a modern day descendent of the same name who is an authority on salinity in WA and probably has an equally good claim to the article title. Snottygobble 04:14, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to keep bothering you. Want to try an experiment? Paste

into your sandbox. It will create a simple starting template with a commented out image, an opening sentence stub, a references section, some categories and persondata. Snottygobble 04:30, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Still working on it. Not just trying to be clever; I'll use it once I've got it working. Snottygobble 06:17, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Category:Heritage places of Western Australia

I commend this recently created category to your attention. My guess is most of the places in your sandbox belong in there. Snottygobble 05:20, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

(Sigh) I do hope you/others whoever, get this one right
I trust that snotty/drew gets to read this as well - the 3 levels + of heritage designation has driven me gaga with some in the past (not wiki) - the federal heritage, the state heritage register, and the municipal inventories tend to get squeezed together by some - a bit like the olde days at electoral booths with the lucky ones who couldnt distinguish between the three levels of government!(what election am I at? etc) - a cover article is needed, otherwise it is potentially misleading! So what you guys doing to the non existent rain?  :) SatuSuro 10:20, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree. Eventually we should probably have separate categories for National Heritage listings in WA (of which there are only three), National Trust listings in WA (lots), Heritage Register listings (lots) and other listings such as municipal, plus a parent category to hold them all. But I'm happy enough to start small. Snottygobble 10:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. I was/am considering calling it something like that but want to keep clear of residential palaces and the like - of which there's hundreds if you browse the Councils database. What do think? -- Moondynetalk 05:42, 14 June 2006 (UTC
I don't know. IMHO, "heritage" is an overused, omni-inclusive wankword. I used it in the category title because the category is specifically defined in terms of the heritage council's heritage register; otherwise I would have preferred to avoid it. I guess I would be inclined to call your article something like Historic buildings in Perth, unless you are especially attached to the pre-/post- 1900 distinction, or wish to include buildings whose heritage value derives from something other than their place in history. Snottygobble 10:29, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
The issue can arise where heritage can apply to things other than buildings (ie i agree with ya drew) - maybe I would suggest it would be better as Historic Structures in Perth? Just my coming in from downtown bassendean, to dem hills here - There are things in the Bassendean - Midland - Bellevue area I would tend to call historic structures... just an idea ? Re:Sam Vimes RfA

Well the very next sentence in my criteria does say "This does not necessarily mean I have to have come across them before; as there are edit histories, talk pages etc.", which I think covers your first point.

However, as it turns out I've just been reviewing the new comments posted since yesterday when you sent your message, and yes I am willing to reconsider given more information. I would like it if you could point out any specific conversations on talk pages or contributions to Wikipedia namespace pages that show 'good admin behaviour'. Petros471 08:08, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

It's not that difficult to show how you'd behave as an admin, but it does require a bit more involvement in the admin type pages (mostly in the Wikipedia: namespace). I'm sorry to disappoint you, but on thorough review (I have gone through a lot of Sam's contributions, not just the ones you pointed out), I have decided to keep my oppose in place. My RfA

Hello Moondyne, and thanks for voting in my recent RfA, which passed with a tally of (68/19/3). I appreciated your comments, which I hope to take on board in order to gain your respect in my work as an administrator. Best of luck in your continued editing of the encyclopedia! A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Or not. I just posted a message on the talk page that was, in retrospect, perhaps inadvisable. For some reason, the edit didn't stick. I'll take that as divine intervention (thanks Jimbo!) and tone it down a bit on the repost. Snottygobble 05:51, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Factoid Killer

Thanks for removing the abuse. I've accidentally made an interesting discovery:

Factoid Killer was the original account; it was around for a fair while, made some useful edits, built an identity. At some point the user spawned a series of abusive sockpuppets. Many sockpuppets were eventually identified as such and blocked, but it took quite a while before it was discovered that Factoid Killer was the main account of the puppeteer. Because Factoid Killer came to my attention so late in the picture, I made the mistake of tagging it as just another puppet of a later account, NSWelshman.

In this way Factoid Killer - the account with which the user most closely identified - was denied the infamy of being a disruptive sockpuppet mastermind, and tagged a mere pathetic sockpuppet; whereas NSWelshman - a mere throwaway abuse account with which the user did not closely identify - received the "glory".

Thus have I accidentally discovered a most wonderful way of denying sockpuppeteers the infamy they covet. Henceforth I pledge to tag all sockpuppet accounts in reverse, tagging the major perpetrators with lots of edits as sockpuppets of the obvious throwaway socks with virtually no edits.

Re: New articles

A dumb question, but is there a tool or page to list only NEW articles I've created? If not how else would one do that? -- Moondynetalk 11:31, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I've often wondered that myself. I searched all over when I first decided to create a Contributions page, but no luck. Special:New pages only caches a month or so of info, so its not much help. I imagine the most efficient way to do it manually would be to cut and paste the set of articles on your watchlist into a text editor. You could fairly quickly identify a large group that you definitely did create, another large group that you definitely didn't create, and another group that you don't really care whether you created or not. Hopefully that would leave you with only a couple of hundred articles to manually check.
The other thing I wondered is what is my personal "oldest page" i.e. the page I created that has withstood the longest period of time without an edit. Eventually curiosity got the better of me and I manually checked. Murchison River, Western Australia has survived 15 months without an edit. Can't imagine why - it's not exactly comprehensive. (Lets get this out of the way: no I couldn't care less if you edit it and kill off my record) Snottygobble 11:51, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
I actually took the bait and went there but couldn't bring myself to do it! Lets see how long now that its in the PD. -- Moondynetalk 11:58, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Sgstats.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Sgstats.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Snottygobble 11:57, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

WP:MOSDAB

Hello,

I've had to revert your changes to dab page Gabba, because they followed an outdated MoS. Please see WP:MOSDAB, especially about:

 • Only one bluelink per item, except special cases
 • No bolding, except for the lead and sub-topics

Dab pages are only temporary navigational tools: if someone made a wrong link to Gabba in his article, and a reader clicks on it, the dab page's only goal is to help the reader quickly find which item is the one he wanted to read about, hence the single bluelink rule. It's not supposed to be a perfect dicdef for each item, but only a concise summary to decide which item is the one the reader wanted. (However, when an item is a redlink, the item's definition can be a bit more complete and/or include source, for further work.)

Actually, dab pages aren't even part of the encyclopedia, because we're supposed to regularly purge their "What links here" by fixing all incoming pages that are in error, so that each article directly link to its intended target.

Hey must be v close! :) (oh well done anyway!) SatuSuro 04:08, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

I embarked on this as an experiment, with particular regard to the proposed naming conventions. Is it encyclopaedic? Is it too long? If so, is there a sensible way of splitting it?

There are 16 watercourses named "Spring Creek" in Western Australia. And two homesteads. We need to consider how to disambig one level down. I think Local Government Area is probably best.

One thing that's bothering me is the messiness of splitting suburbs/towns from rivers when they share a name: e.g. Boyup Brook. It is absolutely unacceptable to have different articles at Boyup Brook, Western Australia (for the town) and Boyup Brook (Western Australia) (for the brook); we'd be a laughing stock to anyone who wasn't intimately familiar with the conventions. The only solution that I can see is to put them at Boyup Brook (Western Australian town) and Boyup Brook (Western Australian watercourse), make a disambig page (e.g at Boyup Brook (Western Australia) and turn Boyup Brook, Western Australia into a redirect to the disambig. Messy.

This has been a worthwhile experiment so far.... ;-) Snottygobble 13:07, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

P.S. Articles like SatuSuro's Nyaania Creek make a pretty good case for Category:Rivers of Western Australia to be renamed to Category:Watercourses of Western Australia. More verifiable that way too. How do we decide whether Boyup Brook is a river or not? And the Swan River is an estuary for most of it. Snottygobble 13:11, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Rivers

I've redirected links to a number of river articles that definitely belong at Whatever River (Western Australia). You probably noticed I moved Margaret back to Margaret River, Western Australia on the grounds that the town is more prominent than the river, and the article is more about the town than the river. Working on Swan River links now.

The Gazetteer confirms that Blackwood River is unambiguous within Australia, and a brief google suggests that it is unambiguous worldwide. Should it be at Blackwood River or Blackwood River (Western Australia)? The naming convention that we have just agreed on gives different answers depending on whether we use the version at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (places) or the version at WP:AWNB.

Snottygobble 04:20, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for sorting out Margaret River, I agree with that. IMO, (is this a test?) the Blackwood should be Blackwood River (Western Australia) on the basis of consistency within rivers, and consistency with towns.
Out of curiosity, in AWB, what source list do you use to find the river articles for disambiguation? -- Moondyne 04:42, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I don't test.
That's not what (some versions of) the new naming convention says. WP:AWNB#Naming convention for geographic places - conclusion says "Unambiguously named geographic features use Geographic Feature, e.g. Uluru;"
Blackwood River (Western Australia) doesn't bother me, but I'll eat my socks before I create Archipelago of the Recherche (Western Australia) :) Snottygobble 04:52, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

In List of postcodes in Western Australia, there's an entry for Gascoyne River, separate from the Gascoyne Junction entry. I checked with Australia Post's postcode search and it does indeed show a locality called Gascoyne River.

I changed the entries but am now uncertain if I've done the right thing. Could you review plse. -- Moondyne 01:40, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

According to the Gazetteer, there is a "LOCB" (= town or bounded locality) named "Gascoyne River" more than 110km east of "Gascoyne Junction". Seems to me you did the right thing. Snottygobble 01:50, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Bangladesh

Hello Ian.

I'm not sure about this one. I also created titles with New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies and Zimbabwe instead of nationality because I thought they sound better. The thing is that English cricket was already there and that does sound better than England cricket so it was a bit of a balancing act really! I have an open mind about Bangladesh so if you can effect a speedy then by all means.

All the best, --BlackJack | talk page 06:19, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Shopping Mall articles

Hi, you recently voted to keeep the article Macarthur Square. Could you please suggest something that could be added to the article to make it notable compared to all the other articles for shopping malls on Wikipedia? I ask this because I cannot see what makes one shopping centre notable compared to the one in the next suburb. Not every house has an article, why should every shopping centre? Thanks, I hope to implement some of your suggestions. I am happy to conduct a reasonable amount of web-based investigation to implement some of your thoughts. --Garrie 05:54, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Rugby league

Hi Moondyne. I noticed you were changing occurences of "Rugby League" to "Rugby league". I believe the convention is actually to use "rugby league", when not at the beginning of a sentence. JPD (talk) 10:10, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I concur, rugby league it is --Angry mob mulls options 11:05, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

What about Rugby League Football? Why would you not call it by its official name? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 60.225.219.33 (talkcontribs) 12:58, 4 August 2006.

Could you please stop changing 'rugby league' to 'Rugby league'. I have spent a lot of time changing articles that refer to 'Rugby League' to the correct lowercase. Whilst 'Rugby football' is the correct name for the type of football played at Rugby school, it is not correct to write either 'Rugby league' or 'Rugby League' (except when referring to the organisation). No dictionary would list 'Rugby ball' or 'Rugby shirt' as being correct either.GordyB 14:03, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I can see your point here and agree now that I've done the wrong thing. I will revert these ASAP. Apologies everyone. -- Moondyne 14:25, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

The grammatical issue involved is that 'Rugby' is the name of a place and as such has a capital letter. This creates a grey area in grammar with words derived from place names sometimes being capitalised and sometimes not. 'Hamburger' comes from Hamburg but is not normally capitalised as this words have long since been so absorbed that nobody thinks of 'Hamburg' when they order a hamburger.
Rugby league has little connection with the town of Rugby, Rugby did not even have a team until fairly recently. Australian football has a very strong connection with Australia which is why it is normally capitalised. Rugby league newspapers and magazines (in the UK at least) mostly capitalise 'Rugby League' (the sport) and use lowercase for 'rugby union'. This is why the practice is fairly common on Wikipedia.
To be consistant, if you write 'Rugby league', you should also write 'Rugby ball' and 'Rugby shirt'. Very few people do and no dictionary would list this as correct. Certainly no dictionary would list 'Rugby Ball' or 'Rugby Shirt' as so 'Rugby League' is definitely wrong.
Writing 'Rugby league' would also be inconsistant with the names of most other sports such as 'table tennis' (not 'Table tennis').
Names of organisations, however, do take capitals so 'Rugby League' is correct when talking about the organisation of that name (as is the Rugby Union).GordyB 15:10, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
"Start of sentence" is insufficient. This edit decapitalized one cell in a table where all others are capitalized. jnestorius(talk) 18:41, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Removing divert from Rugby League Football

Why the hell did you remove the divert from Rugby League Football to Rugby League. Seeing that everyone calls it Rugby League Football, it is a fucking stupid move. I noticed that you changed all references to Rugby League as football to Rugby league. If you are a Victorian fuck off and if you are Sydney, actually learn the NAME of the game. Wikipedia adheres to colloquial language, not whatever the fuck you want to call it. If you need proof of my assertions, just ask and I will provide, otherwise change it back and get the fuck off footbll articles. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 60.225.219.33 (talkcontribs) 13:05, 4 August 2006.

Whilst I would not condone the tone of the anonymous user's post, he does have a point. It is not wrong (though unusual in the UK) to refer to rugby league as 'football' see Football (word) and it is quite the norm in Queensland and New South Wales. As long as it is clear that the reference is to league and not any other kind of football there is no problem. I also agree that the redirect should be set up again, I personally don't say 'rugby league football' but it is fairly common usage.GordyB 14:07, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
I'm sorry I seem to have rather assumed that you were guilty of what you were accused of without checking for myself. If you feel that you have not made any changes then you probably didn't. Apologies.GordyB 15:13, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks GordyB. The anon user may have been referring to changes of "League" to "league" which had been the main thrust of my changes. That surely stays. He may also have been complaining about my move of Roy Masters(Rugby League Football coach) to Roy Masters (Rugby league coach), which is trivial. Its now Roy Masters (rugby league coach) -- Moondyne 15:18, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
A bizarre rant, the complete term "rugby league football" largely unheard in Oz. Everyday usage would be shared between league, rugby league, and just plain football. --Angry mob mulls options 07:43, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about the rant, had not had my sugar fix. Apologies. Okay, firstly, Mob, listen to Sterlo talk about football, that is the term he will use. It is also the term on Fox sports. Still do not believe it, go down to your local football club and it is probably a Junior RL Football Club. Look, I will even show you the links 2, 3, 4, I could go on, but it would just be pointless. 5 is a good enough round up.

Secondly I objected to the renaming, a redirect from Rugby League coach to Rugby League Football coach would have been adequate. Thirdly apologies again, I thought you had removed entirely the RL football thing and could not possibly understand why such a thing would be done. The best that I could understand was that you were trying to assert that it was not football which I deemed aggressive and petty-spirited. It would be best however to keep any redirect that sounds like that, capitals or no capitals. Fourthly I think that Rugby League should be changes to Rugby League Football. Regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.225.219.207 (talkcontribs)

Whilst it's traditional for clubs to use RLFC, I still maintain that in my 30+ years supporting the game that RLF is a fairly uncommon phrase to label the game itself - it's a bit of a tautology actually. OK, page hijack over :p --Angry mob mulls options 16:53, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Dear 60.225.219.*, as you seem to have a dymamic IP address, I'll respond here, but you really should consider opening a user account so that people can leave you a message and know that you'll get it. Its easy to do and has lots of advantages. See Special:Userlogin and press "Create one". A couple of other things I need to say to clear the air. 1) I am not mean spirited, quite the opposite; 2) never, ever, swear like you did again no matter what your feelngs are or you will be blocked from using Wikipedia; 3) I am not from Melbourne (or Sydney) and have no view whatsoever about the turf war between the football codes; 4) Wikipedia does not adhere to colloquial language, it adheres to encyclopaedic facts and when there's grey areas (and there's lots), we use consensus amongst users. Many new editors write Wikipedia articles like they read in a newspaper or magazine - with emotive language and strong points of view. That is incorrect style and is not allowed here; 5) I've left the Roy Masters (rugby league coach) article (which is an good example of a bad article) named as it is because I believe that to be the correct name for the article based on disambiguation article naming policy; 6) I accept your apologies in the kind spirit they were given.
I do not wish to get into debating "Rugby League Football" (all capitals, 3 words) here other than to point to Gordy's well laid out explanation above. I suggest that if you wish to raise the issue of a name change for the rugby league article I suggest you take it to Talk: Rugby league where experienced users such as Gordy, JPD and others can offer input. If you need any further help, just ask. -- Moondyne 16:34, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

AWB edits

Hi -- I believe I saw one your edits change "Rugby", which was the first word of a new sentence, into lowercase. I just wanted to give you a heads up, as it looks like you might be lowercasing all instances of "rugby" indiscriminately. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 01:37, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Here's the edit I'm referring to. Obviously, if you wanted to do a full run and then change instances of ". rugby" to ". Rugby", this might work, but I'm not sure if higher-ups will be happy with the first error being there (and I also don't know what problems may arise in the case of ellipses before "Rugby"). I don't use AWB, so please correct me if I'm misunderstanding something. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 01:41, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Regarding your message on my talk page -- I was just afraid you might have been running a bot with the potential of numerous mistakes (which was an unfouned assumption). Since it appears you're doing it yourself, sorry to bother you. I guess I just assumed AWB meant bot, for some reason. Keep up the good work! -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 01:44, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
