Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Unused images

Just curious, why did the bot add File:Lynd School.jpg to this list? It's used at two different pages, and to one of them I added it almost immediately after upload. If I understand this page properly, it's likely to have tons of my images. I'll often try to take and upload multiple pictures of the same site, but with the very rare exception, I'll only ever use one of them on Wikipedia. Talkback, please. Bot added text to NR list image section

See National Register of Historic Places listings in Union County, New Jersey — the bot added the word "None" to the image column for entries #1 and #21. Both had coding errors: instead of <!-- Image goes here -->, the first had <!---Image goes here --> and the second had <!--Image goes here -->, but I'm not sure why the bot decided to add text instead of simply leaving what was already there. The bot uses some logic to extract the image, sometimes it fails and it returns none. Haven't seen actual images getting lost so I'm not that worried about it. I cleaned most of it up by the way. multichill (talk) 23:12, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

To respond partly: I don't think Multichill knows how, simply put. It requires some reprogramming in the templates NRHP header and NRHP row that Multichill is putting into NRHP list-articles. Please see and comment at discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#when neighborhood column not wanted. Bot refnum issue

Hey, I stumbled upon a glitch when running through the Texas listings in NRHP_missing.txt. In National Register of Historic Places listings in Bell County, Texas, There were 5 listings that duplicated the ref number (83003076) in the initial November 15th run, except they have separate listings, which I had added in the notes sections a while back. These listings correspond with the listings for that county in the txt file. I did notice that they all were named (someone's) House, and were listed on the same date, so they all had that in common. This did not happen in the Bastrop County listing, which has a bunch of "Houses", but were not listed on the same date. FYI.25or6to4 (talk) 05:05, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

NRHP images on lists

First off, thanks for all the work on this. Wowzers! What I wanted to know is, how can you make a list show up in the 'missing images' category without the redlink? I noticed adding 'none' to the image parameter adds it to the category, but then there's a redlink which leads to uploading a 'none' file. National Register of Historic Places listings in Bay County, Florida is an example. Btw, I'll weed thru some more of the missing refnums in other states to see what I can fix. Oh, right, I still have to clean up some none's. I can easily add a tracker category to lists in need of images. What would be a good name? Category:NRHP list needing images or something like that? Do you have a suggestion?

Whatever category name you think best; I'm not picky. :) Could it be set so that if the 'image=' parameter is empty, it adds the page to the category? That might be simplest, since real images and the 'address restricted' graphic would be covered.

BTW, you needn't worry about the 'Additional Documentation' stuff. It's just more paperwork that's sent to the gummint about the particular property, and it's recorded under the original refnum. Thanks, but I havent' got the time to read 23 pages of discussion to find the answer to my very simple question above. I'll take your reply to mean that there is no real, practical reason why the refnumers should be added.

I also notice that the new format is not Puerto Rico-friendly: in Puerto Rico there are no "counties" instead there are municipalities, and towns/cities always go by the name of their corresponding municipalities (that is, although they are geographically different, they are both always named the same, with the city/town always being a subset (geographically speaking) of its corresponding municipality). It appears the new table is unflexible and does not acccomodate this requirement. Another Puerto Rico-unfriendly feature I bumped into has to do with the Town/City column header, which appears unflexible as well: in Puerto Rico Municipalities break down into "Barrios", just as in the States counties break down into city/towns, but the table cannot be made to read "Barrio" as a column header.

Further, I noticed that adding the name of the municipality to each a feature's county field did not have any effect on the displayed table either. Again, seems wasted time, and I repeat my question for this newly found problem as well, "for what?": .My name is Mercy11 (talk) 22:24, 18 December 2011 (UTC), and I approve this message.

Hey, Mercy11 has a good question or two or three here, arising from the true facts that the NRIS system is kludgy with respect to Puerto Rico, which is indeed organized by municipalities and does not have counties. Multichill is handling a lot right now though, and there are some things not fully worked out, so Mercy11 please bear with some disruption for a while.

Short answer on reference numbers, Multichill is spear-heading this effort so that other-than-English language versions of wikipedia can copy over the NRHP list-tables efficiently. It was not ever U.S. NRHP editors' consensus that reference numbers would be included in the list-tables, but some Europeans seem to like it. In their tables they can choose to display them. Also, it does provide some rigor in identifying exactly which place one means.

About "barrios" or "municipalities" displaying instead of "City or Town", that can be done in these tables by customization available already. Mercy11, can you pick one table / article to address? I'll try to customize it. Hmm, how about National Register of Historic Places listings in western Puerto Rico. --doncram 21:13, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't see it covered in the 23 page discussion over there, but changing wording is covered in the documentation at {{NRHP header}}: "You can override city or town with something more suitable. For example add {{NRHP header|city=Neighborhood}} to change it to Neighborhood". And "You can also completely remove the city or town column. This only works if this field is turned on in the header and all the rows of the table. For example add {{NRHP header|nocity=1}} to remove the column." I tried a couple changes there, please see.

But, there are more complications here. I think this discussion for Puerto Rico complexities should be in the wt:NRHP arena, including so that it will eventually be findable in archives. Doncram, I don't know how far you have gotten on your western PR NRHP work, but I have a request: If you could experiment with the southern PR listing instead. The reason is I spent quiet a bit of time entering all the "counties"(!) for the largest city there (see Ponce) as well as all the missing refnumbers. Children's Museum update

It's time again to share the latest news on the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to categorize these images and distribute them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out here.

We have also donated our first video and a second GLAM-Wiki Infographic to Commons. In September we were thrilled to welcomed Jimmy Wales to the museum. Following our successful Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to Lvova!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive case study. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the Prezi.

In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Parser problems

Not a biggie. I ran across this whilst updating. It looks like when a refnum is missing, and the date is "None", it generates a parser function error. An example can be seen at National Register of Historic Places listings in Colorado. The category is Category:ParserFunction errors. There's less than a dozen lists, and when the refnum and date are added, it goes away. I'm adding the info, which fixes it, and should be done before too long.

I'm glad you like to search link. I was first thinking about updating my database based on the weekly listings, but decided that that was too much was and this was an easy way to quickly find them.
