WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! 2015 Daytona 500 is an In the News Candidate...

...meaning the article needs to be completed asap. I'm sure you are exhausted, probably even asleep right now as you attended the race today, but if you don't mind trying to update the article soon, I'd greatly appreciate it (the race summary has already been filled in, the results table is the main thing). WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader   Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as   Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge,   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Did you get Crafton?

Just asking if you got an image of Matt Crafton last weekend. I think we could use an image of him since it was his first time in a Cup Series car, which is a noteworthy event. --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 02:14, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

@Bentvfan54321: I put the picture on the Matt Crafton article. Do what you want with it.--Nascar king 02:30, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

I think an image of him in the truck uniform should go in the infobox as that's primarily what he is known for, so I'll tweak it a bit. Thanks again! --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 02:32, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Blocked

You have been blocked temporarily and docked 25 championship points for failing post-race inspection. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions, like not manipulating your tires. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the following text below this notice: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Under the NASCAR rulebook, all tires must be the same to ensure that you will not win a race.

Re:Daytona 500

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it, and I think you should continue with it. I'm not adept with the process as to review GA articles; I've only implemented changes on articles, on ones that I have reviewed in the past. Bearing in mind, even though the article has been nominated for such a review, it may be a substantial period of time before it actually gets reviewed – the oldest unreviewed article is from five months ago, with approximately 50 unreviewed from 100 or more days ago. So minor tweaks can be made from now until when the article does get reviewed, and we can see if the WikiProject can get another GA - move the tally to nearer 50. WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by   The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was   Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:39, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

2015 Quicken Loans 400

In the article 2015 Quicken Loans 400, why did you remove my edits on Aric Almirola in the section "Race Results"? Because I just edited that and that was not very nice of you to get rid of it. Ptb1997 (talk) 12:07, 17 June 2015 (UTC).

@Ptb1997: It was probably an edit conflict. When Nascarking began editing the page, your edit wasn't there. Then you probably began editing and saved the page before Nascarking did; when Nascarking saved his edit, it essentially undid yours. --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 12:17, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
I get that, but it still was not very nice that it erased my editing on Aric Almirola.Ptb1997 (talk) 13:11, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
@Ptb1997: It's no use getting upset about it, though. It happens. It's frustrating, but it happens. At least it was a fairly simple edit; I've been in edit conflicts where I've filled out entire tables only to have them erased by a conflict. It's no big deal though, as all I have to do is simply copy what I had written before and paste it into the article. I understand your frustration, but saying it was "not very nice" may be taking it a bit too far, as Nascarking had no idea that you were editing the page at the same time. --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 18:02, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
I'm not getting upset. I'm just saying. Okay?--Ptb1997 (talk) 19:40, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Nascarking. Just wanted to say you're right about the logo. The image is a little bit blurry, but you can see it's for the 2015 race when zoom in quite a lot. Anyway, the mistake was mine, so sorry about that. FWIW, I found this version of the same image at "New Twist To Daytona 500 Qualifying Presented By Kroger". It might be a little cleaner than the version currently being used and a bit easier to make out. Once again, my bad for not noticing the 2015 text in the logo sooner. No hard feelings I hope. - Marchjuly (talk) 13:37, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Given your sandbox work...

Over at User:Bentvfan54321/NASCAR Results, my career results page, a few editors and I began constructing a table for the Grand National series (e.g. pre-modern era). Of course, do what you want to first, but since you are listing out the schedule for each season, I was wondering if you'd be kind enough to help us complete the table? Construction has stalled quite a bit the past few months... --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 14:59, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Removing elimination scenarios

Don't think you needed to remove the elimination scenarios section I added this morning. This information has been included in the past and as an open source, my understanding is you are only supposed to remove incorrect information, not just because you want to. This is information a lot of people are looking for, which is how I found these pages years ago. I was keeping the information updated & sourced the information, there was no reason to remove it. Also in your haste to rid the world of viewing elimination scenarios, you also deleted the following code for the section, thereby removing the postseason section divider & link, don't worry I fixed it.--Nascar king 03:43, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

Yes, there was

The discussion on WT:NASCAR where multiple people objected to my proposal to adhere to WP:COMMONNAME in limited cases because Brickyard 400 isn't the official name anymore? Also, do not just say I'm disrupting Wikipedia to make a point, there is no point to be made. DoctorIndy said it, fair and square, "That race has not been referred to as the "Brickyard 400" for 10 out of the last 11 years. To considered it common name is becoming more and more a bit of a stretch." and ""Picking and choosing" which official title sponsors to use and which to ignore is unprofessional and is based on opinion only. What makes one more important than another will boil down to one editor's opinion, and that is not the spirit of WP policy."

That race is officially the "Your Hero's Name Here 400" until the name is selected (which is reflected by the article for the individual race). ViperSnake151  Talk  23:12, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

A "Don't Cuss at Me Like That" message

Yesterday, when you and I were talking turns (well, that's what I call it in my opinion), I noticed that you made an edit summary saying "LET ME WRITE THIS, DAMMIT! I'm a trained journalist.", a phrase that I realized was directed at me for not letting you write that race summary in the article "2015 Pure Michigan 400". You know, the word "Dammit" is a curse word. To get back at you, I said in the "Edit Summary" box "You don't cuss at me like that. The race just began.", a phrase directed at you for cussing at me. As a matter of fact, my mom, dad, brother, and two sisters accuse me of saying curse words, which (obviously) is my problem. You cussing at me is your problem, isn't it. I'm not mad at you, but saying the phrase "Let me write this, dammit" really hurt my feeling, but however not that bad. I just don't want you doing at to me ever again, okay? If responded back to me, good. Thank you. Ptb1997 (talk) 22:01, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Throwback schemes at Darlington

Considering the hype going on at Darlington, should we mention the throwback schemes that the drivers are going to run at 2015 Bojangles' Southern 500, or is it too trivial? I'm not too worried about reliable sources, since those are available. NFLisAwesome 18:33, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

@NFLisAwesome: or @ZappaOMatic: I was actually thinking about that too and I'm kind of torn on it. There's definitely enough sources to back them up, but I'm not sure if it really matters since throwback schemes aren't really something that affect the race itself. We also never track paint scheme changes from week to week. I'd say bring it to the project talk page and ask what everyone else thinks.--Nascar king 18:51, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far   Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was   Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1.   Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2.   Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4.   Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5.   West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6.   Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7.   Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8.   Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Daytona 500#History

Oops, my last edit on this article should have thanked you, rather than User:Trekphiler, for highlighting the extra long distance of the 2015 race – which tweaked me to add a bullet for 2010's superlative 517.5 mile race. I'm sure you're both valiant outstanding editors worthy of thanks, but this particular instance was meant to be you. Jmg38 (talk) 00:08, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Edit Summaries

I noticed on your edits for the page "2015 Coca Cola 600", for some, you haven't been giving Wikipedia editing summaries, so you might have to always do that to allow us to know what you edited on the page. Ptb1997 (Talk) --Nascar king 16:42, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Edit Summaries, version 2.0

Hi there! Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! — Wyliepedia 17:26, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

@CAWylie: First off: Don't template the regulars. I'm more than familiar with Wikipedia policy having been here for almost seven years. Second: I'm not required to explain my edit. I only do that when it might not make sense to anyone else but myself.--Nascar king 17:42, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Firstly, apologies for the template. I usually edit using a phone so that made it quicker. Secondly, the edit summary link above has the phrase "good practice" all over it there, and the template does say "even if you write the briefest of summaries". At the 2015 Vols page, even that would save the rest of us time checking even the "veterans" summaries. Thirdly, no need to ping me, as your talk page template states. — Wyliepedia 17:53, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
It's a force of habit with the pinging. That's how I communicate with other members of a Wikiproject in which I'm heavily involved. It's not important to figure out whom added what to an article, just if that addition belongs.--Nascar king 18:01, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Exactly. So "added Georgia" in an edit summary would keep page patrollers from having to verify. — Wyliepedia 18:45, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
I have autopatrolled user rights so my edits are automatically patrolled.--Nascar king 19:03, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Yay, I'll find you a WikiCookie. My point is to kindly let others, many of whom do not know any of your "rights", know what you did. Frankly, after all this, I don't even care anymore and presume that you are claiming ownership of the 2015 Vols article, which doesn't make me want to edit there anymore. All I was asking for is a simple edit summary request and now feel like I got shut down, since you never really replied to it except to say "I'm not required to explain my edit. I only do that when it might not make sense to anyone else but myself". It's not a requirement, true, but a nice gesture. Meh, I'm being stonewalled since you've done six edits in 30 minutes at the Vols page without any consideration. Enjoy editing it for the rest of the season. — Wyliepedia 19:38, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
I never said I was taking ownership of the article. I'm just expanding the game infoboxes. Anyone can know my user rights just by clicking my name. I don't keep them hidden. Don't let me stop you from editing the page, but don't presume to tell me what I should be doing. Especially when you're the only one who summarizes edits according to the edit log. It's not a requirement for me to summarize my edits.--Nascar king 19:51, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Apologies, NK. Upon doing research, I discovered, between the two of us, we have edited almost 60% of the page. Wonder what it would look like without us? GO VOLS!Wyliepedia 05:42, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 2015 myAFibRisk.com 400, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Tony Gibson. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Reversion of Chancellor holdout blurb

I take exception to your reversion of the addition I made to the 2015 NFL season article related to Kam Chancellor's holdout. To that end, I've initiated a discussion in the article's talk page regarding the "notability" of this event. I'd welcome you sharing your thoughts there. Thanks. — DeeJayK (talk) 17:46, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Oxford Comma

Quick question. I noticed you left an edit summary on an article stating that "we don't use the Oxford comma." I'm a bit confused by your meaning as MOS:OXFORD allows for serial commas if they're consistently used across an article. Would you clarify your meaning for me? --Non-Dropframe talk 22:04, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

You just answered your own question.--Nascar king 22:27, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

References sections

Either way is fine. Though if I had to choose, I'd use the former.--Nascar king 22:11, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
I just said the former...meaning the Template:Reflist|2 over Template:Reflist|30em.--Nascar king 22:17, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Ah, Ok. My proposition is next: if number of refs is more than 10, than 2 columns. If more than 100, than 3 columns. Do you agree? If not, write your numbers? 95.133.216.22 (talk) 22:20, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
I think 10 is too small to warrant use of columns. I would say 30 is when the use of two columns is warranted.--Nascar king 22:26, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Then 30 is a big number already for one column. Maybe, 20, ok? 95.133.216.22 (talk) 22:33, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

I'll settle for 20 then.--Nascar king 22:35, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Ok. I think, we find a consensus, 20 is Ok for me. Good luck! 95.133.216.22 (talk) 22:38, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is   Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science.   Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to   Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
