I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:48, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again!

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:49, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Please fix WPcleaner correction

I see you did a disambiguation clean on Jovana Jakšić. Please revert the cleaning back. As can be seen on Talk:Jovana Jakšić (tennis) this creation was not approved and is in the process of being moved back to Jovana Jakšić, with the disambiguation page being removed completely. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 09:00, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

When the page is moved back to Jovana Jakšić (and a quick look suggests that it will be moved back), Jovana Jakšić (tennis) will automatically redirect to Jovana Jakšić (at least it should, if moved properly). All links that were disambiguated will go to the correct page through the redirect. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 09:21, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Dab fixes

Thanks for going over the film articles and doing the dab fixes. I was going to set up the articles, and then go back over then en masse and do that, but your help is greatly appreciated. Onel5969 (talk) 12:46, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

@Onel5969: I disambiguate the links as they come up on the various lists that I look at. On a side note, it appears that Charles Kerr has appeared a few times as an assistant director, but doesn't have an article yet. I have no idea if there is enough information out there for one, but I though I would mention it. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 10:29, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll add Charles to my list, which is at about 20 pages I'll need to create, like Silver Screen Magazine, Jack Hively, Lee Marcus, P.J. Wolfson, George Nicholls, Jr. (Whose father was also a director), Francis Edwards Faragoh, and Archie F. Marshek.Onel5969 (talk) 12:32, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Re: Reversion at San Diego Comic-Con International

Please note, the disambig page is actually at Comic Con (no dash) -- there is no article at Comic-Con, which currently redirects to the other term. If you'd like to retitle the dab to be "Comic Con (disambiguation)" please feel free. It is currently in dispute whether the dashed term shouldn't (as it did originally) point just to San Diego Comic-Con --HidariMigi (talk) 04:04, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

San Vito (Costa Rica)

Hello, Nice Guy. Thank you for fixing the interwiki link, I appreciate it. Now, since links and disambiguation seem to be your thing, I have a question for you. How come the article doesn't show up as an article when you enter it in the search box, but in italics as "containing" San Vito (Costa Rica)? It would be nice if that could be fixed . . . (hint hint).

And while we're on the subject of disambig., the whole farming/cattle/ranching/etc. field is a dog's dinner, beyond my abilty or ambition to do anything about.

Disambiguation of plain text

Regarding this, was it intentional? I don't think I have seen a non-wikilinked phrase disambiguated like this before. -- Brianhe (talk) 05:03, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

It wasn't. There was an ambiguous Monument Hill link inside of a template and I thought that was it. The link must have been in the {{Washington State hills and ridges}} template. I have removed that disambiguation. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 05:43, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

List of PSone Classics

Hi Niceguyedc. For the future: Cases like List of PSOne Classics look like disambiguation pages, but they shouldn't be tagged as such. They are lists of lists. YOU magazine etc

Thanks for the fixups of the redirects for You (magazine). In trying to clear the mess, I thought I'd checked all the existing redirects (and a fair few articles did link to the wrong magazine) but obviously hadn't checked the What Links Here to "You (magazine) itself.

I was in two minds whether to put them on the existing DAB, so I thought it better initially to create a separate DAB which could then be easily merged if necessary (as indeed you have done). But I was remiss not to check those incoming links. Si Trew (talk) 08:21, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Rollback of Hz disambiguation

Please see edit summaries at [2] and [3] for explanation. SpinningSpark 17:24, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

It only "broke" 37 links, which isn't all that bad, and I fixed those links. There was little reason, however, to revert my disambiguation of those links, even if Hz is back to pointing to Hertz. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 19:20, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
There might be "little reason", but there is some reason: forcing the links to be piped unnecessarily adds, albeit slightly, to the "code clutter" in the edit window, which on some pages makes them virtually unreadable. SpinningSpark 20:31, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
This is not code clutter. The links are correct and what Niceguyedc did was right. There is much worse "code clutter" that this. Most importantly, Hz shouldn't point to Hertz, as explained at Talk:Hz. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:13, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

I didn't realise how many incoming there were! It took me ages to do the first well you said 21 but I think I managed about 50 in the end. Epiphany

Hi Niceguyedc. I am confused. this page is nothing but a disambiguation page - it is even listed as such in the categories section at bottom. Did you have a look at it? I had a feeling that the copy-paste route is not how it is done, but I did it because the content of the page is 100% a disambiguation page. Please have a look. Thanks for your time. Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 22:16, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

When there is no primary topic and many different possibilities for the target of a title, the base title (in this case Epiphany) is where the disambiguation page goes. The (disambiguation) title (Epiphany (disambiguation)) is used to redirect to the disambiguation page. The redirect should only be linked by pages intentionally linking to the disambiguation page (for example, the hatnote on Epiphany (holiday) links to Epiphany (disambiguation) because it is an intentional link to the disambiguation page). What this does is let those of us at WP:DPL (and the bots that help us) know that the link is intentional.
What was the intention of your copy-paste move? Were you planning to put something else at Epiphany? -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 22:33, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
I still don't understand. So is this one wrong? There is no primary (what appears here to be a primary is actually redirected), but it does not redirect to "Inside Information". Besides the technical aspects, don't you think that Epiphany (holiday) does in fact warrant being considered the primary? Thanks for your patience. Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 23:01, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
@Rui Gabriel Correia: Inside information is the primary topic for that title, and it points to the article on the subject, which is called Insider trading.
As for Epiphany, if you want to put Epiphany (holiday) at Epiphany, you'll need to start a discussion on the talk page, following the procedure laid out at WP:RM#CM. You'll want to use this template (filling in the reason you want to make the move):

{{subst:requested move
| new1 = Epiphany (holiday)
| current2 = Epiphany
| new2 = Epiphany (disambiguation)
| reason = Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please default to Google Books or Google News Archive before providing any web results. Do not sign this.}}

which will ask for a discussion to move the disambiguation page to Epiphany (disambiguation) and then to move Epiphany (holiday) to Epiphany. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 00:06, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I want to thank you for additional adding of shows to the Cartoon Network Asia page. I didn't add any content, a couple IPs did. I just disambiguated a couple links that the IPs added. But you're welcome either way. :) -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 02:59, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your work. Could you please place an accent over the word nee which appears before the words Bowes-Lyon - (this word, nee, means a woman's maiden name) on the page Conyers baronets in the section titled "Link with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge" I am unable to do accents

Thanks from Mike

Confused

Hello. My intention for removing disambig links was the fact that first; its already mentions "multiple people", and second when I type for example Adam Johnson it doesn't redirect me as it does with Adam Johnson (disambiguation). Which makes me wonder what was the point behind your revert? In my opinion using Adam Johnson (disambiguation) is bad because it is an eye strainer when it comes to blue coloured link flashing under Adam Johnson. As you noticed I removed disambiguation only from those that had redirect, others remained.--Mishae (talk) 16:26, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Still confused. Why is Adam Johnson (disambiguation) is better then Adam Johnson if it redirects to it?--Mishae (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
If the link is just to Adam Johnson, then the link appears to be a link that needs to be corrected, because Adam Johnson is a disambiguation page, and linking to a disambiguation page is usually incorrect. How so? If the link is to Adam Johnson no correction is necessary since next to it it says either several or multiple people. I think we should discuss it broader somewhere because although I agree on using disambigs for misspellings I still see it wasteful to use them for various names.
According to the link that you provided it says that Links to disambiguation pages [from mainspace] are typically errors and that [With few exceptions], creating links to disambiguation pages is erroneous. If its erroneous, why creating them in the first place? If its much better to link to Adam Johnson and then put , several people.--Mishae (talk) 01:03, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
O.K. But can't we give the bot to mark only certain redirects? Like redirects in mainspaces rather everywhere? Why do everyone needs to know which link is intentional and which is not? Plus, if tools and bots look at Special:WhatLinksHere/Adam Johnson and find it there, can we set up a bot to ignore it since its not something that a bot should worry about? Like, a link to Adam Johnson from surname list is better then Adam Johnson (disambiguation) (the reason behind which I provided above).--Mishae (talk) 01:28, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
Then maybe we should let the bot to report, but we as users will see which links need to be repaired and which aren't? Like, think of it this way, every user have a better thing to do then follow the bot around. For example, can we set a bot to ignore disambigs in surnames same way as it does with talkpages? If you know what I mean? P.S. I have posted my question on both talkpages, but I won't read probably by tomorrow evening.--Mishae (talk) 01:47, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
My opinion on the whole matter is that piping a link is irritating. True, maybe you don't see it that way, but even other language Wikipedias don't use it (perhaps because it already became outdated). O.K, they kind of do, but it looks like this:
  • Adam Johnson
Not in the surnames.--Mishae (talk) 02:07, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
The harm is irritation of that thing saying Redirected from Adam Johnson (disambiguation) right under Adam Johnson.--Mishae (talk) 02:11, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
Well now I completely don't get it, user The Banner have went through the whole thing and removed half of the whole list?! Look here.--Mishae (talk) 02:32, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
To quote this question: Still confused. Why is Adam Johnson (disambiguation) is better then Adam Johnson if it redirects to it?--Mishae (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2015 (UTC) :
The link is better because it removes the link from the maintenance pages. Unfortunately, it is only a trick, not solving the issue. The Banner talk 03:04, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
And that's the trick to which I oppose since it doesn't solve the issue. My suggestion would to do something similar to Mukherjee. Any thoughts?--Mishae (talk) 04:36, 9 February 2015 (UTC)
Mukherjee follows what The Banner is suggesting, not what you are suggesting above. There are no links to any disambiguation pages on Mukherjee. As I said on The Banner's page, I have no issue with that. My only issue is that if an intentional link to a disambiguation page is going to exist, it should pipe through the (disambiguation) redirect. If there are no links to disambiguation pages on the page, then its fine with me. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 04:40, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi there. Could you please explain why linking to a redirect to a disambig page is better than linking directly to the disambig page? I'm referring to Distribution (disambiguation) which redirects to Distribution as found in Probability distribution, Distribution (differential geometry)‎ and Distribution (economics)‎. There is no visible change to the user since you've renamed the redirect links the same as its target like this: Distribution. This seems odd to me. Tayste (edits) 19:53, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

@Tayste: Linking to the (disambiguation) redirect allows those of us at WP:DPL (and the bots that help us) know that the link is intentional. From WP:INTDABLINK (as it states it as well as I can):

Links to disambiguation pages from mainspace are typically errors. In order to find and fix those errors, disambiguators generate a wide array of reports of links needing to be checked and fixed. Because these reports can not distinguish instances where an editor has made such a link with the intent to point to the disambiguation page, the community has adopted the policy of rerouting all intentional disambiguation links in mainspace through "Foo (disambiguation)" redirects. This makes it clear that such links are intended to point to the disambiguation page.

-Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 20:24, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Hmmm, thanks. I did read that but still think it's odd. Why not have "(disambiguation)" in the title of the disambig page, with the ambiguous term page redirecting to that, instead of the other way around? Tayste (edits) 21:08, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Policy is to have the disambiguation page at the ambiguous term if there is no primary topic (see WP:DABNAME). In my view, it makes funny business much harder when it comes to the ambiguous name. If the ambiguous name was always a redirect, someone could retarget that redirect to their favored topic and no one would be the wiser. Links to that page wouldn't trigger any of the disambiguator's lists, so incorrect links wouldn't easily be found. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 22:01, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Linking disambiguation pages

You seem to make a mistake, replacing direct links to disambiguation pages with redirected links to disambiguation pages, in Zeeland (disambiguation) and on several other pages. – Editør (talk) 15:58, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

@Editør: That's not a mistake at all. When intentionally linking to a disambiguation page, the link should be piped through the (disambiguation) redirect (per WP:INTDABLINK). This allows those of us at WP:DPL (and the bots that help us) to know that the link is intentional. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 16:25, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation. I'm not sure though, whether it's good policy to focus on maintenance/bots instead of human readers. – Editør (talk) 17:27, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
@Editør: WP:INTDABLINK is concentrating on human readers. There are currently over 148,000 links that point to disambiguation pages that need to be checked. Almost all of those links are intended to go to a specific page, not a disambiguation page. Without piping through the (disambiguation) redirect, there is no way for me or any other editor to know whether the link is correct or not without checking it. This time spent checking extra links takes us away from correcting links that are not intended to link to disambiguation pages. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 17:36, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

François E. Matthes national guard fix

I recall my National Guard dilemma because there is not an exact link. However, the fix to United States National Guard page went too far astray. I've linked to the Royal Netherlands Army which is in the right country. I wanted to let you know of my correction in case my page is on your watch list. Disambiguations @ New Madrid, Missouri

Hello, I hadn't forgotten about those two links needing disambiguation...But, it was the 'headings' one that threw me. I tracked down a meaning for head that related it to 'staves.' -- A barrel head is the flat top or bottom of a barrel. (I edited the Barrel article & added this meaning of head to the Head disambig. page.) How did you decide on the heading/metalworking link? Just wondering.  :) P.S. Why have two users here asked you to put the accent mark on née? ~Thanks~ User:Floridasand

Looking at the sources, those are the only two definitions I can find that make sense. As far as née, it's the same user, and I think it is because I did it once a bit ago, so I keep getting asked. :) -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 21:28, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
