Western Chalukyas

edit

Hi. Need some clarification. I did not understand this in the FAC page. "Imperial eq to metric would be useful ".ThanksDineshkannambadi 00:16, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I had made a mistake. The units were not grams but grains. I will look around and see how they relate to grams/ounce units. Dineshkannambadi 00:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nichalp. I am proposing a name change from Western Chalukyas to Western Chalukya Empire as it gives the reader a better idea what the article is about. The term dynasty has already been used for the earliest kingdom of same family, the Badami Chalukyas. What do you think?

Dineshkannambadi 13:31, 24 March 2007 (UTC) Hope you can help. I did a move to Western Chalukya Empire. The history and discussion page also moved by not the FAC discussion and the Peer review nomination I think. How do I get around this problem?Dineshkannambadi 14:56, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bold textHALO....TO ALL EDITORS of 'MUMBAI' article in WIKIPEDIA... Our MUMBAI is the FINANCIAL capital of the emerging superopwer,INDIA....

But we are not showing it off with PICTURES...Just look the 'KARACHI' article in WIKIPEDIA...They are SHOWING OFF Karachi with GREAT PICTURES,creating a firstworld city image...

What is KARACHI compared to BOMBAY??? Nothing...ABSOLUTE ZERO!!! But the Image they create throough PICTURES in WIKIPEDIA is that KARACHI is a GREAT Asian city...And what do we create,a BAD of our BOMBAY,by posting LESS images, that too UNIMPRESSIVE and BAD Images... Pakistanis POST good iamges of KARACHI??? IS THIS WHAT WE HAVE TO DO TO OUR MUMBAI??? SPOIL the INTERNATIONAL IMAGE of INDIA and MUMBAI???? COME ON!!!!.....POST GOOD IMAGES and remove the bad ones....DO NOT remove the GOOD ones...

  1. This is an encylopedia, not an image gallery. Images galleries are to be placed on commons:
  2. Images have to be free to be used in an article.
  3. Images need to accompany the text alongside. Karachi has a lot of pictures that have no relavent to the text alongside.
  4. Could you do something about replacing the images with better quality, pertinent ones?

crispus attucks

edit

As anger escalated, a churchbell was struck (as it would in case of fire or other emergency), drawing people out of their homes. The British soldiers of the Twenty-ninth Regiment were called to duty in response. Townspeople began hurling snowballs and debris at the soldiers. A group of men led by Attucks approached the vicinity of the government building (now known as the Old State House) with clubs in hand.

Violence soon erupted and a soldier was struck with a thrown piece of wood. Some accounts named Attucks as the person responsible. Others witnesses stated that Attucks was "leaning upon a stick" when the soldiers opened fire.

Three Americans were killed and two were mortally wounded. Court documents state that Attucks was the first one killed and that he took two bullets in the chest. Attucks’ body was carried to Faneuil Hall where it lay in state until March 8 when he and the other victims were buried together.

Based on the premise of self-defense, John Adams successfully defended the British soldiers against a charge of murder. Two of the soldiers were found guilty of manslaughter. In his arguments, Adams called the crowd:

"a motley rabble of saucy boys, negros and molattoes, Irish teagues and outlandish jack tarrs"

Although Adams was considered a progressive thinker in his day, his negative characterization of the crowd based upon the ethnicity of some of its members seems odious and bigoted by modern standards.

Samuel Adams, a cousin of John Adams who held civil disobedience in higher regard, gave the event the name of the Boston Massacre two years later and helped assure that it would not be forgotten. Boston artist Henry Pelham (half-brother of the celebrated portrait painter John Singleton Copley) created an image of the event. Paul Revere made a copy of the image from which prints were made and distributed. Some copies of the print show a man with two chest wounds and dark face who is assumed to be Crispus Attucks. Other copies of the print show no difference in the skin tone of the victims.

The five who were killed were buried as heroes in the Granary Burying Ground. Law and custom of the period prohibited the burial of black people and white people together, which suggests that Attucks was considered mulatto rather than black

Hi Nichalp,

Can you help me here. I just posted on Rama's talk and then noticed that you were active. So just hoping that I might get a quicker response. Thanks. Sarvagnya 09:40, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nichalp, saw your note on my page. And now, I'm confused. Some time back I had pinged RA about one of the |images he'd uploaded. And from his responses(I'll dig them out if you want) I was led to believe that...
  • If a photograph was first taken more than 60 years ago in India, then it would qualify for pd-india.

Now you say that, not only should the photograph have been taken more than 60 years ago, it also has to have been published more than 60 years ago. Is that right? If so, then I believe loads and loads of photographs might be suspect including the Godse one uploaded by Rama. Because, while it is not difficult to deduce that the photograph was taken more than 60 years ago, how are we to verify that it was also published more than 60 years ago? Especially since, there more than one source may have published the same photograph. That photo Rama has uploaded, for instance, has also been published in Dominique Lapierre's book "Freedom at midnight".

I hope you're getting my drift. Please help. Thanks. Sarvagnya 02:04, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

In the light of you disagreeing with Rama on the images, I've started a discussion on the template talk page. Please provide your inputs there. Thanks. Sarvagnya 02:23, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Project News
  • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([2]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [3]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
  • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

username change request

edit

Hi Nichalp, since you're one of the bureaucrats, I wanted to just remind you about my request to have my username changed from User:Wikipedier to User:U.S.A.U.S.A.U.S.A. that I have filed out there.(Whan I made an effort to report an inappropriete username, an administrator said that my username was more of a violation than the vandal I was reporting). I now know that it's in violation for being a Wikipedia term. Certainly, however, not a malicious username, and I think that's why I think I should have the chance of changing it. If this username is not appropriete, could you please let me know? I chose it because I'm proud to be an american! Overall since when I came to Wikipedia in late November of 2006, and now, I hope that I've been improving this encyclopedia, and wish to continue on that with a new usermane.--Wikipedier (talk contribs) 01:19, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • "an administrator said that my username was more of a violation than the vandal I was reporting" - actually, I didn't say that at all. It's borderline & chances are, it'll be picked up on again. I've no doubt, however, that you chose it in good faith - Alison 11:33, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've added the request at the bottom and removed my old one. Is that the only reason the request was Denclined,(Declinded for the time being until I follow those instructions), or was that new username decline as well?--Wikipedier (talk contribs) 14:45, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for transferring my account from User:Tachikoma to User:Kyoko. I have a question. Is there any way to get it so that it doesn't say "User:Kyoko (usurped)" as seen here? I find it less than aesthetically pleasing. I've tried covering it over, as seen here. I'm asking because I don't recall seeing other renamed users with the (usurped) title.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your work. I just wonder if there is something that I'm supposed to do that I haven't. Thanks for your time. --Kyoko 16:01, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Imagery

edit

The image use policy refers to png being better than gif as: png is a better format and allows a greater compression. commons:Image:Hurricane profile graphic.gif and commons:Image:Hurricane profile graphic.png are identical in terms of content, but the superior compression of png means the png is considerably smaller. However, as the png is a straight conversion of the gif the other technical benefits of the superior format do not apply. This means that the content of the png is not superior in anyway.

This is why requesting gifs are replaced with pngs is specious. If a new image is uploaded; png should be used in preference to gif. However, the net result of the upload of a pngised gif image in addition to the original gif is zero in terms of content and is strictly negative in terms of file space as even if one is "deleted" the server still has both of them using up HD space. Furthermore, in some cases the gif may not necessarily be deleted due to licensing concerns. Therefore, IMO this just uses up a bit of server space for no reason. Encourage vectorisation of gifs and pngs but don't encourage pngisation of gifs ;)

Oh and on the topic of svgs a few miscellaneous comments/tips. There is no reason for the en language version to be on WP, it should be on Commons (who knows what other english projects may want it for a start). Also, when uploading a svg created in Inkscape you may want to consider using a plain svg as opposed to Inkscape svg. See Commons:Category:Created with Inkscape for some reasons: it strips out unecessary data and removes some of your personal information (like your Windows Username).--Nilfanion (talk) 17:15, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Usurpation

edit

I don't know where you "heard" I was in favor of this. I have carried out, I believe, one such request, when the target username had a single vandalous and immediately-reverted edit several years ago; this seems like an obvious exception to me. There is no reason we should be obliged to operate according to carefully-delineated rules; these complicate what is otherwise a very simple procedure. You and I have been chosen for our position because the community trusts our judgment, and it makes little sense to construct a process in which that judgment becomes unnecessary. When you fulfill a request, use your judgment; when I do so, I will use mine. If a problem arises with an action I have taken, I will handle it. — Dan | talk 19:04, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
