Need Help with Indian Institute of Rural Management
Hi, I am more or less through with editing and adding references to the page Indian Institute of Rural Management and just need about 2 more independent sources to validate their course programs. Since am at it for the first time, I was wondering if you would have to time to go through the page as it stands now and provide feedback as to the direction of work. I hope am not troubling you too much with this and please feel free to refuse. Thanks in advance, regards, Tycheana (talk) 09:42, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Tycheana: I have not looked at references, but I must comment immediately that the article still reads more like a promotional website than an encyclopaedia. Some of that was there before, whilst you have added others. I'm afraid it is full of trivial details which could be found on its own website. Please think about how best to cut out the hyperbole (=WP:PEACOCK words). The saying "less is more" is very relevant here. I also feel you have copied some content from their Facebook page, which is not acceptable. Only write content in your own words, in a neutral, encyclopaedic manner, based on what other organisations have said about it. Here are two examples - the first is terrible to see in a neutral encyclopaedia, as it is Peacock wording; the second is a WP:COPYVIO from Facebook.
- ...commitment to produce qualitative and innovative top-management workforce reveals itself in the variety of contemporary business management courses that it offers.
- ...Programs offered by FMS-IRM are based on the pattern of courses offered by top-notch B-schools in India and abroad.
- Hope this helps, Nick Moyes (talk) 11:02, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you so much for pointing out, and you can rest assured that whatever you have brought out will be rectified tomorrow or latest day-after. From this point on, I will now strictly apply the edict of 'less is more' while whetting the content. Actually I suppose it is easier while light editing, and the real test on cultivating this style of writing comes only while revamping pages. Thanks again, regards, Tycheana (talk) 20:30, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Question?
Hi, Nick. I was wondering if you could help me with something? I've been trying to figure this out on my own by reading the manual of style, but I'm not sure I'm quite understanding what I should do in this specific situation. I started a draft for a disambiguation page at Draft:Martinis (disambiguation). According to WP:MOS#NAMELIST, this page shouldn't include names. Is there enough notable people with this last name (I could find four) to justify a seperate page with Martinis (surname)? If so, what should I do about the two music-related articles listed in the draft? I'm worried that maybe this page isn't as useful as I thought it might be about a half hour ago. Clovermoss (talk) 03:01, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Clovermoss. Glad you've not totally abandoned me, then!! How are you doing? I will step down briefly from my lofty administrator pedestal (LOL) to dane to speak with you! Referring to WP:NAMELIST (which I assume is what you meant to link to), I interpret this as relating only to situations where there are too many trivial people's names to be included on one single DAB page. That doesn't apply here - so stick to one DAB page, just as you've done. By way of contrast, there are many more people with the surname 'Martini' so Martini and Martini (surname) seems appropriate. You could also add Martini as a 'See also' in your draft. Always work on the principle of least confusion and fewer mouse click to facilitate people finding stuff. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 13:49, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- Alright, thanks! I still might pop by with a question every now and then. Nice to hear you have a "lofty administrator pedestal". Is it solid gold, with your name engraved? Jk. Seriously though, you're amazing. Clovermoss (talk) 20:45, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Notification about a FAC renomination
Greetings,
since you did comment on this later withdrawn FAC I wanted to notify you that I've renominated it at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Coropuna/archive2. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 20:15, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
- OK, thanks very much. I will take another look as soon as I'm able. Nick Moyes (talk) 20:56, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Welcome template
Thanks again for your research comment at the Village Pump proposal! I'm very open to possibility of conducting research, but (pending a response from one of the editors you tagged) I haven't yet gotten a clear sense of how that would need to be done. Regarding improving vs. replacing the current template, I shared my rationale for wanting to go the improve route to WereSpielCheckers above. Sdkb (talk) 18:18, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, Sdkb. Thanks for dropping by. I hope you'll forgive me for diving in to comment on your Welcome Committee work. To be frank, I've only recently become aware of that project, which I support the idea of wholeheartedly. For myself, I've been deeply committed to the cause of supporting new editors through my work as a Host at the Teahouse for the last two years, and, perhaps counter intuitively, have hopes to revamp WP:AAU so that it moves away from appearing to offer support to totally new users, but focuses more on helping and guiding committed tyro editors who have already demonstrated their broad commitment to Wikipedia.
- I will ask Jonathan Morgan about the practicalities of doing A/B testing as an amateur on Wikipedia, as I have absolutely no idea what statistical abilities and data manipulation tools or software those guys need to be able to do serious research here. It would be great if us normal human beings had access to the tools necessary to do even basic research here, even if it isn't up to publication standard. (Could you give me a diff to the rationale you mentioned you gave to WSC? It'd save me a lot of time delving into old edits.) Thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 23:51, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- Sure thing; here's the diff. Thanks for your help! Sdkb (talk) 00:35, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Then the thing to have done was to have edited the TH post, deleted the article content and replied to the user who posted there. - @Hell in a Bucket: Ah - so welcome back then! For myself, I'm also coming to terms with changes here too, having taken on the responsibilities and duties of being a newly-mopped admin, so I'm on a learning curve too. I noticed some of your postings to WP:UAA today which 331dot replied to. I didn't reply to your question about the edit by Macemusic to Wikipedia:Sandbox, though my gut instinct would have been either to have simply watched them and checked further edits or, better still, drop them a friendly note of welcome on their talk page, explaining your concern that they might be thinking about using Wikipedia to promote themselves. Until they actually do try to do that, their name is so lowkey that the username on its own doesn't quite reach 'promotional' in my view. But I thought I'd sit that one out and see what other, more experienced admins do with it. ::::What I am learning is that, from my side of the fence, I still have to put the work in to check every single report is valid before I enact any block, so it's really helpful when those who do the reporting don't do it too spuriously on the 'offchance' that it might be a problem. Certainly, at WP:AIV I'm seeing one or two familiar and well-known faces who I've respected for their anti-vandalism work leaving third level templated warnings for a single bad edit, and then reporting them immediately, too. I'm never going to block those editors for minor offences, so am now seeing the increased workload for everyone if the reports are made too hastily. Not something I had appreciated before. Regards, and keep up the good work! Nick Moyes (talk) 21:12, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- That's a good attitude to have and probably one I'd like if I needed any action of my own reviewed. It also provides some context to your actions. Personally that you are willing to admit these things probably bodes well for your future as an administrator is my general feeling. No need to respond your busy with the mop. Have a great day. Problems
- Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [2]
Changes later this week
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [3]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [4]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [5]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [6]
- There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.
-
wgMFSpecialCaseMainPage
was used for the mobile site. It was deprecated in 2017. It will stop working in April. Wikis should see if they use it. If they do they should fix it. You can read more and ask for help. This affects 183 wikis. There is a list. [7]

Guida dei Monti d'Italia?

A (hopefully) notable biography?
In October 2020, I consulted you about the notability of a biography, which would be my first article, after 5 years of editing. (Belated thanks for the Christmas gift of WP:TWAS, it was a low time for me, being separated from my family because of COVID. Your poem cheered me and the original reminded me of happy times in the past.)
Nick, I'm finally (?!) ready to publish Draft:Nigel Bonner. Bare bones, concerning the later part of his career, but can add more, later. I think I would prefer to move directly to Mainspace, per your previous comments. At the time, you mentioned DYK. I only have 7 days from publication, so I have included DYK samples on the talkpage, if you have a look. (Should I remove prior to publication?)
PatLurcock very kindly contacted me, because they published List of recipients of the Polar Medal, (great work!) and wanted a blue link to "BONNER, William Nigel"...so, it's time to publish so that others can add and improve, etc. Goodness knows, it's not perfect. Criticism, suggestions, etc., will be appreciated. Thanks so much for your initial encouragement! Best wishes, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 02:26, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Tribe of Tiger Nice to hear from you, and thank you for those kind words. I was sorry to hear of your separation through Covid. Iha dthe reverse - kids home from uni and school for months, unable to do what they wanted to be doing. I've been seeing your edits appearing on my watchlist, and I think this is excellent. I've changed a couple of spellings to British English, which I hope you'll agree with, despite WP:ENGVAR. (You could even add the BrEng template, if you wish).
- Yes, I think you should remove the DYK hooks from the talk page and work on those in userspace asap. You'd be really miffed if someone pipped you at doing a DYK - but do please go for it (first time is not easy, however). There is a small amount of copyvio/close paraphrasing you could address (see here), though I recognise much is simply matching job titles etc.
- Forgive me if I don't comment more - very busy in real life, but if you'd like me to NPP it for you, I'm happy to help get it into mainspace immediately for you. Just ping me. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 19:19, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
- Nick Moyes, thanks so much for reviewing! Sorry to hear that your youngsters have had their lives disrupted. My minor experience of "separation" pales in comparison to what kids, families and parents are dealing with on a daily basis.
- I wanted to use British English, but didn't wish to ask you...so thanks for the changes! I have moved the DYK, and yes, I would be "miffed if I were pipped". I don't have my heart set on DYK, but it's worth a try, and I have images of cute furry animals.
- I've had numerous past sessions with old Earwig, but went through again. It's a great tool, but objects to mundane turns of phrase, as well as all the proper names, three quotations, and the publications list!
- Yes, if you would NPP for me, I will be so grateful. Your kind words: "I think this is excellent", have me over the moon! That's even better than a DYK, coming from you. Thanks again for your time and encouragement. Best wishes to you and your family, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 20:57, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Tribe of Tiger Yes, it really has been very challenging for many people (less so for us, but still stressful in its own way).
- If you want speed, I suggest you move it directly to mainspace when you're ready, then just ping me to sort anything out. Or would you like me to move it there for you immediately (i.e. in the next 24-48 hrs?). I don't want to misinterpret your wishes.
- I think a photo would really round off the article but, as all are currently copyrighted, I've taken the liberty to drop BAS_News a cheeky request via Twitter to see if they're willing to help us out by releasing one. I've no idea if they'll respond, as many institutions like to retain total control over images, without recognising the value of releasing low res images that they own the copyright to for use in other areas that also benefits them. If that fails, you could always email BAS directly once the article is in mainspace, linking to it and seeking critical feedback (plus another cheeky request for an image). Then, finally, we do have a 'fair use' policy for images of people who have died for their photo to be used on en-wiki (but NOT to uploaded to Commons), so that door is always open, too, if a direct approach fails. You'll see I've made a few final tweaks to clear up some wording etc, but it's definitely ready to go. You could even add relevant categories to the article, prefacing each with a colon to inactivate them until it hits mainspace. Providing you can cite it ok, you could mention he's the brother of Gerald Bonner, and link over from that article too, thus obviating the need for a 'See also' entry. Nick Moyes (talk) 22:28, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
- Nick Moyes yes please, move to Mainspace now, if you would be so kind. Thanks for the beneficial tweaks. Some caused me to facepalm, others addressed items I was unsure of, all were appreciated! I provided a cite, for the cn tag. It got separated by a paragraph break, my error. Also made a few tweaks myself.
- Thanks for contacting BAS, I don't know how to use Twitter. If this doesn't work, I can explore other avenues, as well as the ones you mentioned. I've never worked with categories, so I will have to study this. I know they are desirable, for all articles. Gerald Bonner is already linked in the Early life section (if this is what you mean), with a cite, so I rmved him from the See also section, another facepalm. I've linked Nigel in Gerald's article.
- I will file a DYK nomination, once this is published. I have loaded? a helpful script for DYK nominations, worth a try. Thanks again! Best, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 03:16, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Tribe of Tiger OK - I've now moved it to mainspace, activated the categories and added a link to the BAS Twitter post sent earlier. I see there's an empty 'Notes' section with a reflist template - are you planning to use that? If not, I suggest removing it for now as someone else undoubtedly will.
- I can't remember what DYK experience you said you had. But I found my first time harder than creating my first article. I found this a helpful breakdown of the process: Instructions for 'Did You Know' that a normal human being can understand. Looking forward to seeing a DYK in due course. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:22, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- I have rmved the notes section, thanks! So lovely to see it published, thanks for using so much of your valuable time to lead and encourage me. Nick, you are a kind and generous person, and a good teacher. I even learned to add categories...
- Some developments: In addition to the article being published, an editor, Sahaib3005, has added an image as "fair use". I think this was culled from [1], and is a photo provided to them by his widow, Jennifer Bonner. There's also this DYK? nomination by the same person, using my text, which I had naively composed within the article draft, having no prior experience with DYK. So, does this mean that "my" intended DYK, if accepted, will be credited to Sahaib3005? You warned me (here) on 8 Sept. that I should move this, because I would be "really miffed if someone pipped you at doing a DYK - but do please go for it". I think I've been "pipped". Can you confirm?
- At any rate, I'm pleased that the article that I worked on, on & off, for over a year (!) is finally in Mainspace, ready to be read and improved. Thanks again, you've made me a more confident editor! Best wishes, always, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 21:08, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Tribe of Tiger: Yes, whilst Sahaib3005 has very helpfully added a fair use image of Bonner, I feel they have acted extremely unreasonably by using your work of preparing the hooks that you cleared out of the article before it went into mainspace and then immediately nominate Nigel Bonner for DYK themselves, without even discussing this with you. So, yes, I'm afraid you have indeed been "pipped", as I was concerned could happen in my note above. Whilst such actions can be regarded as legitimate under Creative Commons licencing, I regard Sahaib3005's actions as 'most 'unsportsmanlike', and I feel they should be ashamed of taking that opportunity away from you, or at least apologise for any unintended upset this has caused after you had clearly put in all the work and had obviously intended to create a DYK nomination yourself. Perhaps one of the DYK admins such as Cwmhiraeth might be agreeable to swapping over the nomination credit to put it under your name instead? Resolved
- Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to assist and encourage you, and I'm pleased you're happy to see the article in mainspace. I will let you know if (by some remarkable chance) the British Antarctic Survey do get back to me with an offer of supplying an image. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:39, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello Nick Moyes. I think you are being a bit rude, I gave credit to Tribe of Tiger. I wasn’t being "unsportsmanlike", I was being in my opinion "quite helpful". Remember to Assume good faith. Sahaib3005 (talk) 21:47, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Sahaib3005 I was assuming good faith and, whilst I had seen your attribution to ToT, I stand by my comment about you acting in what seems like an 'unsportsmanlike' manner over this. Of course, if you really wish to demonstrate what "good faith" is yourself, you can easily express your willingness to have the DYK nomination credited to @Tribe of Tiger instead so that they can get their first ever DYK nomination, as was clearly their intention. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:58, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- @User:Nick Moyes, if I’m being honest I don’t think you understand how dyk works. For example I have nominated Template:Did you know nominations/Thomas J. Hannon, Template:Did you know nominations/Maurus Gerner-Beuerle, Template:Did you know nominations/Lewis Katz Gulfstream Charter Crash, Template:Did you know nominations/Lady Glenorchy's Church. I do not get credit for the creation of the article, Tribe of Tiger does. The person who nominates the articles does not get credit for the article, they are helping other peoples good work get to the main page. I am going to stop wasting my time trying to explain this. In simple terms I am just trying to be helpful to Wikipedia. Just because you are an admin, it doesn’t give you the right to be so mean to other people. Bye.
- Sahaib3005 My understanding is that are two types of "credit" here...one is for writing a new article, and the second is for the Nomination to DYK. Yes, I wrote the article, but I also wrote the DYK hook, and provided the image(s). I even placed them under a section heading of "DYK experiments". It should have been obvious that I intended to self-nominate my article, for a DYK, which is "credited" to the nominator. I had only 7 days, from publication, to meet the deadline, so I planned ahead, by writing the hooks, etc. The article was published at @9:00 UTC, and you filed your own nomination, using my words/text at @16:28 UTC. I live in another time zone and wasn't awake/editing at that time, so I didn't have a chance to nominate my own work.
- I deeply appreciate your work on the article, and for adding the photo! Please, do the AGF thing, and have the DYK nomination credited to me! It would mean a great deal to me, and as you seem to say, you didn't intend to offend in any way, but to help. This would really help me, if you would be so kind. Best wishes to you, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 23:40, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Sahaib3005 Firstly, my admin status is irrelevant here. I don't think I made any mention of it, nor used it to be mean to you, threaten you or gain some advantage over you. Secondly, I have made my share of DYK nominations and QPQs in the past, and I know full well that
"Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are encouraged."
But for someone to see a clear and obvious attempt by an article creator to draft DYK hooks prior to getting their article into mainspace and for that someone then to immediately nip in and use it themselves to create a DYK nomination template is poor form in my book. I did not accuse you of breaking any rules or policies, or of bad faith editing. Just unsportsmanlike behaviour on this occasion. But I hope you will continue to contribute to DYK, though perhaps with somewhat greater consideration for the intentions, feelings and work of article creators when it's pretty darned obvious they're genuinely working on a DYK themselves. If you weren't sure, you could simply have asked or encouraged them to self-nominate. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 22:57, 9 September 2021 (UTC)- @Tribe of Tiger: I see that Sahaib3005 has now altered the DYK nomination to list you as the nominator, not themselves. I think that shows good faith, and I thank them for doing that. ToT: there is now one other thing you could do. If you go to Template talk:Did you know and look at other DYK nominations, you'll see that the Alt hooks each give a link to the source statement in the article. This helps reviewers confirm the hook is validly supported. You might like to think about adding that in small font. Cheers. Nick Moyes (talk) 10:12, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- I plan to post a personal thank you on their talk. I will admit that I was upset and angry at first....thank you for coming to my aid and defense. Your gentlemanly comments & conversation gave me time to regain my equilibrium, so I didn't speak in anger to an editor who intended to be helpful, and meant no offense.
- I had loaded a helpful gadget to guide me through the DYK process, and it has a box for the source, etc. I still needed to copyedit, by wiki linking Polar Medal, consider other wording, etc....my work was not finished, to be blunt. The page you listed looks like a bomb went off! but I get the point, I think! They are linking directly to the source, but not formatting as a reference? I shall get to work. Best wishes, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 18:12, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Tribe of Tiger Yes, it always helps to use measured tones and choose words carefully- or at least be prepared to apologise if one later realises one has gone too far, or be willing to stand one's ground and justify one's position. (I spent an hour on 'call-waiting' trying to get through to someone today, but had a really fun chat with them in the end because the computer fault at their company's end wasn't that individual's. (Though at other times I'm happy to get really belligerent if the individual is genuinely at fault!) Sahaib made a good point about admins not throwing their weight around - and maybe it seems like that to others, but I would be mortified if I was found to have done that to another editor without just cause. (One thing that happened to me shortly after I was given admin rights was to be indefinitely blocked on an IRC channel - quite a sobering experience to be at the end of another editor's set of toola and to feel unfairly treated ...though I was unblocked shortly afterwards
- Yes, still a bit of work to do to the article, but now it's in, there's no rush - just keep the page monitored for suggestions of things that will need fixing before it can be moved into the approved DYK queue. All the best, Nick Moyes (talk) 19:08, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Tribe of Tiger: I see that Sahaib3005 has now altered the DYK nomination to list you as the nominator, not themselves.

Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

- Toolhub is a catalogue to make it easier to find software tools that can be used for working on the Wikimedia projects. You can read more.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 October. It will be on all wikis from 21 October (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers of the Wikipedia Android app are working on communication in the app. You can now answer questions in survey to help the development.
- 3–5% of editors may be blocked in the next few months. This is because of a new service in Safari, which is similar to a proxy or a VPN. It is called iCloud Private Relay. There is a discussion about this on Meta. The goal is to learn what iCloud Private Relay could mean for the communities.
- Wikimedia Enterprise is a new API for those who use a lot of information from the Wikimedia projects on other sites. It is a way to get big commercial users to pay for the data. Reference Limbo
Hello Nick. Maybe you will recall a couple of conversations we had about this submission of the Chinese conglomerate, Draft:Shiji Group. You handed me some great advice back in November of 2020, and I set out, as time allowed, to refine the submission according to suggestions by the community. Ultimately, User:Nomadicghumakkad was kind enough to push me farther along toward making the submission better. Per your suggestion I toned down the creative writing, and I searched high and low for better and more references.
Right now, I guess the page is in limbo over views as to what is, and is not credible coverage of such an entity. The problem is, these companies are not so interesting for mainstream media. Since I write for several of them, especially technology media, I know there are not too many journalists ready to slice and dice Shiji, or any other such company. I know you are so busy, but could you please offer advice/help here?
Thanks very much, Nick Philbutler (talk) 10:39, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

Growth Newsletter #19
Welcome to the nineteenth newsletter from the Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in Wikimedia projects.
Structured tasks
- "Add a link" is the team's first structured task. It uses machine-learning to suggest wikilinks as easy edits for newcomers. It was deployed in May 2021 on four Wikipedias and then in July on eight more Wikipedias after we evaluated the initial results. So far, we've seen a high level of engagement from newcomers. Communities that have the feature suggested valuable ideas for improvement. We'll work on improvements and then contact more communities to deploy it.
- "Add an image" is the team's second structured task, currently in development. It is an editing task that suggests Commons images for unillustrated Wikipedia articles. We have conducted many community discussions and tests. Then, we've decided to build a first prototype. We'll first deploy it only to our pilot Wikipedias, to learn whether newcomers can be successful with the task. The project page contains links to interactive prototypes. We are very interested to hear your thoughts on this idea as we build and test the early versions. These prototypes have already been tested by newcomers, in English and Spanish.
News for mentors
- The Mentor dashboard is available at our pilot wikis: Arabic, Czech, and Bengali Wikipedias. It will soon be available at a few more volunteering wikis, as a test. [8]
- At wikis where the mentor dashboard is deployed, a new filter is available for mentors. Mentors can monitor their mentees' activity in Watchlist and RecentChanges, so they can help support their mentees' work. For privacy reasons, this filter can't be accessed by someone else than the mentor itself. This filter only filters mentees assigned to the mentor. This filter is not visible for people who are not listed as mentors [9]
Community configuration
- Communities now have the ability to configure how Growth features behave on their own wikis. At Special:EditGrowthConfig, community members can add a list of volunteer mentors, alter the templates used for suggested edits, update help links, and more. This special page is editable by administrators and interface admins.
Scaling
- We are proud to announce that all Wikipedias now have the Growth features! Thank you to all the community members who helped the team build the features and bring them to their wikis. The only exception is Chinese Wikipedia (zh), for technical reasons. [10]
- The wikis that have Growth features deployed have been part of A/B testing since deployment, in which some newcomers did not receive the new features. Now, all of the newcomers on 280 of the smallest of those Wikipedias have the features. [11][12]
- A test is undergoing at English Wikipedia: 25% of newcomers receive the Growth features. The results from this test will be part of a discussion of how to proceed on that wiki.
- Now that Growth features are available at Wikipedia, the Growth team considers to extend them to other projects. Some Wikisource users have expressed some interest in getting Growth features. There is currently a discussion about implementing them on Wikisource.
News for communities
- Do you have questions about the Growth features? This translatable FAQ contains answers to the most common questions about the Growth team work.
- The Growth features were recently used in a test amongst Latin American donors to give donors the opportunity to learn to edit. You can see the results here.
- Interface translations are important for newcomers. Please help for your language, by translating or copyediting interface translations for the Growth features.
- Help:GettingStarted was a feature developed in 2013, which directed newcomers to articles that needed editing. We recently removed this feature from all wikis, because it has been replaced by the Growth features.

Recent changes
- Mobile IP editors are now able to receive warning notices indicating they have a talk page message on the mobile website (similar to the orange banners available on desktop). These notices will be displayed on every page outside of the main namespace and every time the user attempts to edit. The notice on desktop now has a slightly different colour. [14][15]
Changes later this week
- Wikidata will be read-only for a few minutes on 11 November. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This is for database maintenance. [16]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In the future, unregistered editors will be given an identity that is not their IP address. This is for legal reasons. A new user right will let editors who need to know the IPs of unregistered accounts to fight vandalism, spam, and harassment, see the IP. You can read the suggestions for how that identity could work and discuss on the talk page.

"Blaze was typically brief in their reply"
Hey! I noticed that you said this in a reply to a user on Teahouse. Don't worry I'm not here to say "How dare you insult me!" because I actually kinda like that. I don't really mean to be brief honestly, it's just kinda how I work. I'm straightforward and give the answer to the question they asked without going too much into detail (unless I find it necessary as I don't want to bore the new user). If you'd prefer I'd give more detail in the future I can certainly do my best to improve on this. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:11, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Blaze. I'm glad you didn't take it as an insult, as it was really just an observation on some of the replies I've seen from you. Yes, yours can be a bit short, and not as directly welcoming as we might normally hope to give for the first reply to someone. But it's not a complaint. (If you can manage to squeeze in a "hello and welcome" that'd save the next person doing it for you, as it's one of the things most of try to add in to make us come across as friendly as possible to newcomers. But, by contrast, I know I tend to be quite a bit verbose in some of my replies! I try to remember that the person asking the question is probably lost and floundering, and knows far less than we do. So encouraging and helping them with functioning links and explanations should make it seem less impersonal. Keep up the good work! Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:56, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Blaze The Wolf, Nick is being modest, at the Teahouse if you are a host (are you officially a host?) if yes, then addressing a newcomer with “Hello and welcome to the Teahouse” is in my opinion your obligation and compulsory, even if you aren’t an official host you ought to still say “hello and welcome to the Teahouse” a hurried response doesn’t convey, nor show a “welcoming environment” Verbose is better than a hurried response. Celestina007 (talk) 18:41, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Celestina007: I'm not officially a host (still working on making my answers better and get more experienced before I become one), and I used to say something similar to that but for whatever reason I simply just stopped doing it. I will try and remember to start doing it again in the future though as I do agree it makes the teahouse seem more welcoming to new users. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:45, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of 2019 MotoGP eSports Championship
A tag has been placed on 2019 MotoGP eSports Championship requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Seeking help to fix seriously misleading entry
Happy to abandon my username and ability to edit. Haven't got enough time to learn all the Wiki ins and outs. Want to know how to get info to a sensible editor to unscramble confusion about the Speyside Way official website which is at https://www.speysideway.co.uk but I do have a connection with that site so it shouldn't be me, I now realise.
However it is indeed the official website and the .org one featured in your entry is a plausible-looking ripoff site (long history but plenty of independent verification is available). What is best way forward please? ≈≈≈≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talk • contribs) 17:14, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Speysideway That was quick! Sure - I'll try and help, but it will still need you putting in the time to break down each issue as you see it into some sort of bulleted list. By clearly highlighting what's wrong, and suggesting an exact form of words/betting citation link to replace it with, it makes the task of fixing things so much easier. Barring the logo, at first sight the Wikipedia article looks OK.
- But there's help at hand by making a formal 'edit request' on the article's talk page. There is guidance at Wikipedia:Edit requests and if you're not sure how to see it through, you can drop your list of points you'd like addressing on my talk page first, and I'll try and go through and sort it out for you, if I'm able. Meanwhile don't panic if one of my fellow admins 'soft blocks' your page as a shared account - this happens a lot and is easily sorted. You're not prevented from making a new account with a better name as I suggested, should that happen. Just make sure you leave a note on that new userpage to explain your connection and editing interest. Hoping this all makes sense. Are you OK with replacing the new logo yourself? Nick Moyes (talk) 17:39, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
Edit request draft for Nick to react to (have followed the link and hope this conforms to SUNS)
Edit requested: please amend (or ask a suitable editor to amend) https://www.speysideway.org to read https://www.speysideway.co.uk and if possible also amend the logo to match the one used on the true official site
Is it uncontroversial? Probably not - the site https://www.speysideway.org has for many years passed itself off as official and this was easy to do, given that the official (Moray Council-backed and National Park-backed) website was very dated and difficult for Council employees to update. The rogue site looked plausible and appeared more updated so it rose up the rankings easily.
Is the request necessary? In my view yes, because (at effectively cost price) I have helped Moray Council to develop the new, responsive and updatable website, therefore I'd see a conflict of interest if editing it myself (but I've only just learned the first stages of the Wiki protocol, sorry).
Is it sensible? Yes.
Evidence that confirms the official status of the site https://www.speysideway.co.uk can be found at many authoritative websites, e.g. https://www.scotlandsgreattrails.com/trail/speyside-way/ https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uswalks/speysideway/index.html https://www.ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_name=Speyside+Way and dozens of others, plus a few books that I can pass on refs to, published by various established guidebook publishers.
I do apologise for having accidentally having gone about this in what now appears to have been the wrong way. I'm also struggling with the interface (currently I have 11 Wikipedia windows open and only found out how to respond to you thanks to Tenryuu.
Truly I've no desire to edit Wiki entries, but I would like the Wiki entry on Speyside Way to be more accurate. Please help if you can, many thanks ≈≈≈≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talk • contribs) 18:16, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Speysideway Thanks for this. Various points I can make:
- It looks like you've already fixed the .org.uk to the correct .co.uk address.
- The correct website could benefit from a note to explain it is the correct one, or to ring the staff numbers if in doubt. (I note the fake site does not offer valid contact details)
- The link from https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uswalks/speysideway/index.html shows the .org address, but links to the .co.uk address. You could benefit by seeking to get that fixed.
- Even worse: https://www.scotlandsgreattrails.com/trail/speyside-way/ links to the 'official' website's at https://www.speysideway.org/public-transport/
- But, as a retired local govt employee I trust .gov.uk websites, so the best link to have given me was the link from http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_services/page_40302.html which confirmed it as valid.
- So, apart from updating the new logo is there anything else that you would request to be changed?
- I tried, but failed, to take the new Speyside Way logo to upload from the official website. It's not sufficiently large for me to fill the transparent background to white without pixellation leaving horrid black edges, and my attempt to overwrite it did not improve things.
- I recommend that you find a suitable image with a white background from within your team and upload it yourself. This is the one area where the organisation itself is well placed to upload an image they own. Providing you don't try to upload it to Commons, you don't have to release it under a CC-BY-SA licence unless you really want to. But I think something around 15-25kB should be acceptable size for non-free use.
- I hope this has addressed all the points. Let me know if I can help further. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:56, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
SSW website update and response
Massive thanks for that thorough set of bullets, Nick: clearly you work fast and smart and have impressive credentials. Responses after ::: to make them show:
It looks like you've already fixed the .org.uk to the correct .co.uk address.
- Yes, I did that yesterday morning before I knew I'd stumbled in using an inappropriate username and was not the best person to be fixing it because of possible COI. So I concluded that it might be reverted by the people behind the rogue site and am hoping that by briefing you properly we may resist any such reversion
The correct website could benefit from a note to explain it is the correct one, or to ring the staff numbers if in doubt. (I note the fake site does not offer valid contact details)
- Agreed and added to both About sections this morning, but am hoping that the rogue site will gradually fade down the rankings, especially now that Wikipedia no longer points to it. Further advice very welcome, but don't want to impose.
The link from https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uswalks/speysideway/index.html shows the .org address, but links to the .co.uk address. You could benefit by seeking to get that fixed.
- Well spotted! I've emailed them again and will be disappointed if not fixed by lunchtime! [Just checked and it's done, they apologise.]
Even worse: https://www.scotlandsgreattrails.com/trail/speyside-way/ links to the 'official' website's at https://www.speysideway.org/public-transport/
- AAAAAAAAAAARGH what a total howler, all my fault!! That dates from the time when even I was confused by the rogue site, I am totally mortified by that, but it was fixed before 8 am today. Thanks so much for spotting that one.
the best link to have given me was the link from http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_services/page_40302.html which confirmed it as valid.
- haven't seen that page before, did you use a clever reverse search? Actually it contains some dubious info so I'll email Moray about it
About the logo, I will obtain a better version and try to follow instructions to upload it only to English Wikipedia (not Wikimedia Commons) under a non-free use licence. I did embark on the Wikimedia Commons route but baulked at the rights issue. Once you had told me my username was non-compliant I stopped all editing activity but am I OK to carry on just for this upload?
Just FYI I am a guidebook publisher (Rucksack Readers) with about 40+ guidebooks mainly to long-distance routes in the UK and Ireland (mainly walking, some cyclable). If you'd like to choose any one and send your postal address I'd be delighted to send one as a small thankyou for your help. About COI, I manage the SGT website but it's not-for-profit and the Moray Council contract was paid – after a fashion (extremely low-cost, I offered to do it because so mortified by the awfulness of its predecessor at .co.uk).
Finally I'm guessing you are the same Nick Moyes that did the brilliant peregrine project with Derby Cathedral? If so, you may wish to know that the links that are broadcast by LinkedIn with your entry (https://www.derby.gov.uk/peregrines and https://www.derby.gov.uk/flora) don't work any more (404), Derby has probably reorganised its website since you set them up. And if you aren't that Nick Moyes then sorry and please ignore me. With all you do for Wiki I'm surprised you have time for consultancy! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talk • contribs) 10:06, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Speysideway Well done for fixing the links so quickly. Finding the Moray link was a simple one. As your non-fake website has the emails and contact names of Moray Council staff, it was logical to go to their website and use their search facility to find pages on the Speyside Way. I'd thought of contacting the trail's Visitor Centre to confirm the co.uk address was correct, but found it is now closed. Contacting VisitScotland seemed unnecessary.
- Thanks for spotting my own out of date links. Touché! I'd rather forgotten about LinkedIn. I've fixed a few of them. Yes, that was indeed me you unearthed, although I mostly retired and stopped pushing my consultancy work a couple of years ago, and just dabble now for the fun of it. Thanks for your very kind offer, though I'm just happy to help out. I'll reply shortly to your other post below. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:26, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
Link request for uploading a better logo file to Wikipedia
Sorry to bother you again, but I can't get back to a link where you mentioned how and where I should upload the logo which you correctly guessed is not suited to a CC licence and belongs jointly to Moray Council/Rucksack Readers. I am game to have a go, although it would be vastly preferable for me (and conceivably quicker for you than walking me through how to do something that I'll never do again?) if instead I could send you the file somehow? Although small file, it's a scalable vector and we've sorted out giving it a white background and can do a larger one if you need it. Please LMK how to proceed, many thanks.
My intention is to abandon any activity as user speysideway or indeed anything else but perhaps I don't need to actively delete it? ≈≈≈≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talk • contribs) 13:00, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Speysideway The original file is here. Just look for the link at the bottom of the 'File History' section to 'Upload a new version of this file'. That should simply let you replace the file (though it partially accepted my upload attempt, but hasn't let it display - possibly because it is far too small. Of course, you can also upload a completely new file with a different name, say Speyside_Way_logo 2021.jpg, as appropriate. If all else fails, you can let me know and email it to me. (I'll send you my details via an internal Wikipedia email which will reveal my home contact address to you, but not show it online to anyone)
- I took a look at the range of guidebooks you've published. They look really nice. I'd always half-fancied producing a walks guide to my county myself, and the one thing I'd definitely do is place directional instructions in boldface within the rest of the text for ease of seeing the key instructions whilst 'on the hoof'. I rather liked your Arran Coast Guide as I guess we've done parts of it in years gone by. (In fact, we're still waiting for a postcard to arrive that we sent my mum back in 1999 from outside Brodick Post Office!). As a result of seeing the sample page 44 of that guide, I've ended up updated the article on Hutton's Unconformity. Maybe, if you could persuade the copyright holder of the picture of the marker stone to release and upload it to Wikimedia Commons, it could make a great addition, not least to c:Category:Hutton's Unconformity at Isle of Arran. And, as even more of an aside, have you heard of QRpedia codes? They allow you to embed a QR code into a publication which, when scanned, determines the language setting of the phone and takes you to the appropriate Wikipedia article in that language - or to English by default if there is no such article in that particular language. Thus, a Spanish user of that publication would be taken to this Spanish article, whilst a French reader and and English reader would both be taken to the English language version. At least, until such time as someone writes about that topic in French. It's the kind of thing that, with judicious use, could add to any guidebook - at least in my view. My sandbox
@Nick Moyes Hi, I saw that you made an edit in my sandbox, [17]. Thanks for the edit. Could you possibly explain, how you did it. I copied the same template, but it came as normal text. But yours came as it should look. What excess thing did you do. I would be glad , if you can teach me the process. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 04:06, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Itcouldbepossible Ok. I’ve just got up and am only on a mobile right now. I’ll reply to all your questions later in the day when I’ve access to a keyboard. For this or make sure you’re using source editor. If you don’t see the ‘edit source’ tab, you can change things in Preferences so ‘’both’’ editing tools are offered to you. But you can always always switch between them via the black peril icon shown in the upper right side of the editing window. Let me know when you have understood and practiced both these tips. Nick Moyes (talk) 08:08, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Nick Moyes Ok thank you, you can reply to all my messages later. But if would be better if you explain me in a more detailed manner. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 08:45, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Nick Moyes And one more thing, while you write something to me, please use the ping command, because I might on be watching each and every page. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 09:53, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- You don't need to ping me on my own user page - I automatically get notified. But I will certainly ping you from multiple threads as I work through your questions (which is going to take some time and won't be done in one go). Another tip: If you find complex advice helpful, you could always think about making another sandbox page just for table advice, and either link to the diff that it was given, or copy/paste the reply into your sandbox page, and split it up into different headings. If you do the latter, strip out the persons signature - or at the very least the date/time stamp, but make an edit summary crediting them when you copy it into your sandbox. This is called 'attribution' and helps credit other peoples work. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:58, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Yes no problem, you can take your time and answer my questions. It is just more than enough for me that you are answering my questions. I created a page called User:Itcouldbepossible/Sandbox Tables and it is here [18]. Please explain me what you mean by

Itcouldbepossible (talk) 11:37, 24 November 2021 (UTC)- @Itcouldbepossible I'm not sure which bit you got confused by. Sorry. You've made the sandbox table, so that's great. A WP:DIFF is a unique url that lets you see one edit, and then view the entire page up to that pint on which it was made. Like this one of mine.
- But I don't find that as helpful as actually copying in what another editor said. If it was part of a discussion you're copying, you should leave out the date/time stamp or else later on someone will think that person actually wrote that on your talk page/sandbox, or wherever. They didn't, so leaving it in would be misleading to other people. That's why just a credit to them and the source in an edit summary, or as plan text in a page can be helpful.
- Now, I think I can't answer any more questions today. I've fixed the two links in rows 15 and 16 of my own sandbox to show you two types of linking. I see your own sandbox table has a faulty link. You've used double square brackets (which is for internal links) but have put them around what is an external link with a full http: url. A single bracket would have worked, though as I said earlier, we don't pout external links in tables (even to other wikipedia pages).
- I can do no more than ask you to read Help:Link and maybe experiment in your sandbox with links of various types. If it goes wrong, just analyse the code in source editor until you figure it out. Best wishes for now, Nick Moyes (talk) 12:09, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Nick Moyes No NO, please don't over stress yourself for answering all my foolish questions. I know precisely what a diff is, but could not figure out that you said, though I understand it now. You wanted me to link the diff page and tell you that I have created a page - right? And you also gave an option to copy the discussion to one of my sandboxes, and remove the signatures and timestamps and give credit from where I copied it from. Right? I hope I understand you now. Also thank you for explaining me the difference between internal links, and external links. I now know that I have to use only "[]" for external links and "[[]]" for internal links. That is isn't it??? I will obviously read Help:Link, and thanks again for helping me so much. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 13:11, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Itcouldbepossible Yep - that's about it, though you don't actually need to tell the other person if you're copying their posts because you find them useful. One simple way is to use an edit summary when you do. By including their user name in square brackets like User:Itcouldbepossible you automatically send them a notification. So an edit summary like "copying helpful reply from insert username here to my sandbox for future use" would notify them and credit their work sufficiently. I think you're getting it with the links now. One thing to say, finally, is that I'm still learning here. That's what I find so amazing about the place: it is both elegant and highly complicated at one and the same time. And none of your questions have been foolish, which is why I was happy to help you. I found them both technical and interesting. By helping others I also learn a lot, too. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:18, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Nick Moyes Thank you, thank you again for clarifying that what I have understood is correct. No, I meant that 'give credit' in my reply means that I would write in the edit summary where and whose reply I have copied for further reference. And yes I am getting the Wiki links correctly, and you know that there was a coincidence. I had figured out how to mask the link of my talk page with "Itcouldbepossibly" before David Biddulph gave me the solution. And then I saw that you had already answered it much before.
- And one more thing, I don't think I need to create separate sub pages for the replies that I think are helpful, since after a few days, the Lowercase Sigmabot III will archive the discussion, and the muninn bot will leave a link to my talk page. What do you say? Waiting for your valuable reply. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 13:51, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Itcouldbepossible It's entirely up to you - mine was just a suggestion as I have found doing things that way is quite useful. But relying on links to archived threads is also just as sensible. Nick Moyes (talk) 17:09, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Nick Moyes Thanks for the suggestion. For the time being please look here. Why cannnot I make seperate headings for the three archival messages. One already has a "==" heading but for the others I added "==" but those are not coming separately. Please tell me the way of doing it. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 02:49, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
