Newbie Central
editAre you a newcomer to Wikipedia? Here are some resources that you may find helpful:
- There's this video that explains some of the basics of how Wikipedia works. It's aimed more towards readers than editors, but it can give a decent foundation of some things to be aware of before you start editing. This video by an experienced Wikipedian provides more substantial advice.
- The Wikipedia Adventure. This is a very basic (and somewhat eccentric) editing tutorial.
- Do you have a conflict-of-interest? Read this guide. It's also important to be aware of an ongoing scam.
- Category:All stub articles which is organized alphabetically and by topic. All these articles could be expanded!
- This is a tutorial for what to know if you wanted to create an article. Our guideline on what is notable for inclusion on the site is a crucial part of this process.
- Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch – advice on phrasing to avoid when editing
- This page is a glossary of different terms used on Wikipedia that can help you understand what people are talking about if you come across an unfamiliar acronym.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory – this is a list of wikiprojects. Some are way more active than others but it's a decent way to try and find groups of articles that match your interests. I'm particularly fond of Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada and the associated challenge for improving articles.
- This is the perennial sources list, which can be helpful if you're not sure if something is a reliable source. If it's not on this list and you have concerns, try this noticeboard.
- If you are in a disagreement with another editor, you can try asking for a third opinion. There are also other processes for dispute resolution.
- The Wikipedia Library – this cannot be used until you have 6 months tenure, no active blocks, and 500 edits. However, once you meet the criteria, it is a very useful resource. There is also the Wikipedia:Resource Exchange. I have subscriptions to the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and Niagara Falls Review, if you ever want me to verify something for you. I also have access to the James A. Gibson library at Brock University.
Question from Nooky Nauyokas (14:35, 20 November 2024)
editHow do i enter a picture --Nooky Nauyokas (talk) 14:35, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Nooky Nauyokas: You can upload images by going to Wikipedia:File upload wizard. Please make sure you follow all the instructions carefully, copyright violations are deleted quickly. Let me know if you have any further questions. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:57, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, I thought I'd give you a heads-up that this editor is running into a lot of trouble. (You can see at their talk page.) --Tryptofish (talk) 20:33, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Tryptofish: Thanks for letting me know. I issued a partial block for that page in particular. Let me know if things get worse and not better, but I tend to hope for the best with escalatory steps. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 23:07, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Collin2022 (10:56, 21 November 2024)
editLiance,Sorry to bother you. I corrected the source of an image, but it hasn't updated yet. Best of luck! --Collin2022 (talk) 10:56, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Collin2022: My name is Hannah, not Liance. I'm not sure who you're talking about, but I'm an automatically assigned mentor (which means you can ask me questions about editing Wikipedia). Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 13:25, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Hannah, so sorry about this. The text in the logo on this Creality wiki page(Creality) is white, which obviously makes it difficult for users to read. I tried replacing it with an image of the logo with darker text (from the official source), but I was unsuccessful. Collin2022 (talk) 01:40, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Collin2022: You would need to upload a different version of the file if you wish to change it. You can do that by going to File:Creality logo.png, scrolling to the bottom, and clicking "upload a new version of this file". If you are being paid to edit this article, you must disclose this, as undisclosed paid editing is against our terms of use. There is also this guide for contributing with a conflict of interest. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 03:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your patient guidance. I think I've run into a big problem. I tried following your method to upload, but it said I needed to create a Commons account. When I tried to create one, it notified me that my IP was banned. Awkward...I feel like I'm about to give up。
- "Editing and uploading from 184.104.0.0/16 was disabled by Achim55 for the following reason: Open proxy (more info): colocationwebhost This block (ID #471249) is set to expire: 16:52, 22 December 2024. "
- Doing this is not for any reward; it's just a personal hobby. Best wishes. Collin2022 (talk) 06:00, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Collin2022: I've asked a few other editors to try and understand what might be going on here, and they said that you must have accidentally done something wrong, because it shouldn't have directed you to Commons, as this is non free content. Make sure you scroll down on that image I linked, it should say:
Below is the main upload form. For a simpler interface and more specific instructions, use Wikipedia:Upload.
Do not use the simpler interface option. You also don't want to click a blue button that takes you to Commons somewhere? Hopefully that helps. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 15:30, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Rohan TheWikipedian (10:03, 24 November 2024)
editHow to add a Logo In an Article? --Rohan TheWikipedian (talk) 10:03, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Rohan TheWikipedian: Logos qualify as non-free content and thus need to be uploaded locally (here on the English Wikipedia instead of another site) and only used on the relevant article. You can use this process to upload a new image. If you have a conflict of interest with this business or organization, please read this guide. If you are being paid to edit, you must declare this. Administrator recall/Reworkshop talk
editI mentioned it in the discussion, but wanted to come here outside of all the glare to say sorry for misrepresting your perspective in that conversation. If you have suggestions for rewording, feel free to let me know. (Also, I'm open to hatting that section if it's just not productive.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 20:25, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's fine, miscommunication happens through text sometimes. I just felt obligated to say something because I've seen this cumulative attitude towards how recall as a process is fundamentally broken and there are indeed people like me who think it isn't. It's important that those opinions are respected, that non-admins don't feel like they're the target of a double standard, and that signing something they believe in doesn't make them "the problem". I just don't like the potential of a chilling effect that has happened in some of these conversations, you know? I've become more confident in speaking up for people since becoming an admin and I want to keep doing that, because I still remember what it was like to be on the other side of things. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 20:29, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Our views are really closely aligned actually. (Even if they weren't though, I still wouldn't want to misrepresent you.)I think the best thing to come out of the recalsl so far is this discussion. Anything that unbundles permissions and reduced the binary of admins/non-admins is positive in my book. RevelationDirect (talk) 20:42, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- I appreciate the clarification and your way of thinking about things. I think it's still a bit hard for me to process sometimes because I have this inner sense of being a non-admin (I didn't run for RfA until I'd already been here for five years) and I'm only slightly active in actual admin work. I also haven't really changed all that much, but my circumstances have. I feel like people sometimes put me on a pedestal and it scares me. I'm not sure how much of that is tied to being an admin and how much of that is tied to being Hannah Clover. So I've definitely had a lot to think about this year. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 22:05, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

editHello I saw you are my mentor, I need help with developing Draft:PalmPay --Gratefulking (talk) 22:15, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gratefulking: Generally, my advice is to read this guide about writing an article. You're writing about a business, so there are additional notability requirements to be aware of here. If you are being paid to edit, you must disclose this. And there's also a guide for having just a conflict of interest more broadly here. If you find any of this confusing or have questions, feel free to ask me anytime. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 22:19, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
Moderator Tools newsletter - Issue #2
editWelcome to issue #2 of the Moderator Tools newsletter! It's been about a year since the first one (sorry for the delay), but we're excited to tell you what our team has been working on since then, and where you can guide our ongoing and upcoming work.
Automoderator
editAutomoderator is now feature-complete for its initial release! Automoderator is a highly configurable automated anti-vandalism tool which reverts edits that a machine learning model determines to be vandalism. It can be enabled, disabled, and configured at any time by administrators via a Community Configuration form. Automoderator is now in use on Indonesian, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese Wikipedias, with other projects at various stages of discussion and setup. You can track data about Automoderator's activity so far via a Superset dashboard. To request Automoderator on your Wikimedia project, please refer to the deployment steps.
We are wrapping up our focused time developing Automoderator while we review data and feedback about its impact. We also still plan to provide support for small Wikimedia projects with few/no administrators (T372280), and integrate the multilingual revert risk model, which is an improved version of the model currently in use, with support for 47 language Wikipedias. We're looking for support testing the multilingual model to better understand its behaviour - please check out the testing process and review some edits!
Nuke extension ('Mass delete')
editDuring the 2024-2025 Wikimedia Foundation fiscal year, our team wants to make improvements to the software that moderators (patrollers, administrators, stewards, etc.) are using today, rather than focusing on building new tools. Although it's valuable to build new features, it's also important that we continue maintaining the important tools that are already being used to maintain and improve Wikipedia's quality.
One such project is to make usability and feature improvements to the Nuke extension (known as 'mass delete' on some projects). We have contracted a community developer, Chlod, who has worked on the extension in the past, to help us with this! With the Nuke project, we hope to make a number of improvements, including additional filters, increasing the deletion time range, automated deletion of related pages, and bug fixes. Read more about this project, and provide feedback, at Extension:Nuke/2024 Moderator Tools project.
Recent Changes
editAs part of our efforts to improve existing impactful moderator tooling, we are working on a project for a few months to make improvements to Special:RecentChanges and related workflows. We will be prioritizing work for this project on an ongoing basis, but have some larger projects that we will solicit input for via our project page. We have a brief survey at Moderator Tools/Survey:Recent Changes to gather input for this project - please answer the questions if you're interested.
Task prioritization
editFinally, looking to the future, we plan to research and work on tasks identified as part of the Community Wishlist focus area titled 'task prioritization'. We'll be looking for opportunities to speak with editors about how they decide what needs their attention, and in particular will be investigating the Watchlist to see where we might be able to make usability and feature improvements. If you have thoughts about opportunities in this focus area please share them on the task prioritization talk page, or file a new wish!
Although we have active engineering projects ongoing, we're always happy to chat about your community's content moderation tool needs - feel free to get in contact at Talk:Moderator Tools to let us know where you think we should focus our efforts. Reinstating NPR
editHey Clovermoss,
I had to go on an on-off wikibreak from summer through fall, and my trial privileges for New Page Reviewer ended. I was wondering if you could extend it? If you reply here, please ping me. Thanks, TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 21:37, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks! TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 21:41, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Also, one more question, for me to have the right permanently, you said that I need to demonstrate good new page reviews. Since the NPR right also gives me the AFC reviewer right, do those reviews count into demonstrating understanding? TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 21:42, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @TheTechie: I edit conflicted with you while you were writing these comments, but my intention was to explain to you why I only gave it to you for six months. I looked at your logs and you only reviewed a handful of pages during the time you had the right (mostly disambiguation pages). That's fine and perfectly understandable because you were taking a partial wikibreak, but I just want to see a bit more experience before permanently granting the right. Are you active in AfC reviewing? I didn't take that into account as it's a bit harder to dig those up, but if you have done a lot of that, I'd be willing to recognize that you definitely know what you're doing and don't need a trial. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 21:46, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think I did more AFC reviews than new page reviews during the initial trial. Is there a way to see the AFC reviews I've done? TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 21:47, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @TheTechie: There probably is but I'm not aware of it. Give me some time to ask around or allow a talk page stalker to give some advice on how to find it, okay? If I don't get back to you within the next few days, feel free to remind me. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 21:49, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Also, just an FYI, the reason why I've done more disambiguation pages tends to be because the NPR script keeps sending me to those pages. Any way to not make it do that. (Thanks by the way to both.) TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 21:59, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Also, sorry for bothering you again and again, but I accidentally closed out the NPR sidebar by hitting the X. How do I get it back? TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 22:04, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Never mind, I found it. TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 22:12, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @TheTechie: I'm glad you did. So I took a look at your reviews and while I appreciate that you've done that work, it's not really enough for me to feel comfortable granting a permanent NPP right at this time. It's not that you've done anything wrong, it's just really hard to make any firm conclusions at this time without more experience. Out of your 100 AfC reviews, only five were moved to mainspace. This isn't particularly unusual but it makes it somewhat difficult to gauge how that skill would transfer to patrolling pages. NPP is one of the more complicated processes out there. As far as I'm aware, there isn't any way to specifically not see disambiguation pages, but usually they're patrolled pretty fast and you can scroll down the page curation queue to see other types of creations. There is a way to not see redirects. There's also a way to sort by topic. Hopefully that helps. Remember that six months is not forever, okay? When it expires, feel free to come back here, or to ask another admin to grant it permanently. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 16:41, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- That's a-okay, and I will try to get better at it :) TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 03:24, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
editNews and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.
