Making a request

edit

Before asking volunteers to look for your source, try finding it yourself with the tools at your disposal.

In particular, eligible editors can use the Wikipedia Library, which gives access to content provided by numerous academic publishers.

  • Though we would prefer you to ask for a specific journal, article or work, we will accept open-ended questions. You can ask for all kinds of sources here, either on this page or by writing directly to an active user.
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, date and identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc. Indicate which article you need this for.
  • Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot send you full book/thesis copies. Narrow down your request to a specific chapter or page(s).
  • Add the {{Resolved}} template when your request is completed.
  • Filled requests are archived. Requests unfilled after three months will also be archived.

Fulfilling a request

edit
  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests, in full or in part. When fulfilling a part of a request, tell others which one so that they don't have to do the same work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{u|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}.
  • You can:

1906 article in Arts and Crafts

edit
  • Maryon, Herbert (March 1906). "Metal Work". Arts and Crafts.

For Herbert Maryon

According to the below article, The March number of "Arts and Crafts" is, as usual, full of articles which are intended to provide students and art workers with useful information on a variety of subjects in which they are interested. The most important of these articles are "Various Methods of Finishing Oak," by Mr. W. Daniell; "Metal Work," by Mr. H. J. Maryon; "Practical Talks about Wood-Carving," by Mr. H. Turner; "Inlaying," by Mr. A[rthur] C[awdron] Horth; and "Bookbinding," by Mr. F. Sangorski and Mr. G. Sutcliffe. Among the more notable illustrations are reproductions of drawings by Henner, E. Detaille, and Feyen Perrin.

The starting point is to figure out what journal this is—a task not helped by its generic name. There's a good chance that this is a small journal that didn't last long. The article would be Maryon's second published work that I'm aware of, five months after "Early Irish Metal Work", in another small journal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Usernameunique (talk) 01:42, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the location, maybe [1]? Eddie891 Talk Work 02:18, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for that, Eddie891. I think you're right. I sent an email to a library that looks like it has a copy of the issue in question, but didn't receive a response. I've now submitted an ILL request, so hopefully that will both prove you right, and get the article. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:53, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How's this going? If you're having trouble with the ILL, I should be able to request an ILL for OCLC 225804755 pretty easily, as my university is within the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and so is one of the libraries that has it. If you received it but it's not the right magazine, if you send me the full newspaper article that prompted your search, I can try to figure out what else it might be. Solomon Ucko (talk) 06:24, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Sollyucko. Would you mind giving it a go? My library claims that the ILL was unsuccessful; I could try submitting it again, but perhaps you would have better luck if a copy is already within your system. --Usernameunique (talk) 20:19, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it looks like University of Minnesota, Twin Cities doesn't have that issue, but it looks like the following libraries have it:
Two of these are academic libraries in the US, so I think there's a decent chance of success. My university's ILL department is a bit busy currently, but I'll submit it in a few days and see what happens. If you contact me via Special:EmailUser, I'll send you the scan I receive, if it's successful.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 21:16, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've submitted an ILL request myself. It might be more complicated than I originally thought, but hopefully they can figure it out without too much difficulty... I'm just confused how issue and volume numbers correspond with months and years... Solomon Ucko (talk) 13:58, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comparing earlier mentions of Arts and Crafts in The Globe with https://archive.org/details/artscrafts01londuoft confirms that the publisher is Hutchinson & Co. The listing in the catalog of the National Library of Scotland indicates that this is v. 4, no. 22.
My request "has been cancelled by ILL staff for the following reason: Unable to find supplier / The only library that owns this particular year has it as an electronic subscription and they do not have the license to lend it."
I've replied to ask if they can at least provide metadata, as well as sending them a list of libraries that seem to have it in print, narrowed down to Queen's, NLS, and Cambridge, which say they have vol. 4.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 16:10, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Usernameunique: Is this still needed? A few of my friends are attending Queen’s in the fall, and I could ask them to see if they can get it. Barring that, I can try an ILL, but again, that’ll have to wait until fall. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 06:13, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can request this from Queen's. ILL here is usually pretty quick and the librarians are wizards, so I've got some hope. -- asilvering (talk) 13:48, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for one book

edit

Looking for one book. I only remember the beginning of the piece. Some guy found a derelict computer, sat down at it and started doing something, and then he saw a man with a gun walk up to the desk, they looked at each other in silence for a while, then the guy mechanically pressed the Enter button and the man shot him back. The work was read in the 1990s or very early 2000s. The piece appeared no later than the 1990s (probably earlier). I also remember that the guy was doing something enthusiastically on the computer: at first he typed without looking at the screen, but the message on the computer monitor made him do his work more slowly and carefully. The phrases went something like this. The message on the computer screen made him work more carefully. Behind the desk stood a man with a gun in his hand. The guy had never seen a real gun, except in the movies, but he knew immediately what it was. The guy's hand dropped mechanically to the Enter button, and the same second the black muzzle of the gun burst into flames, ending his life.

December 1964 Chicago Tribune article

edit
  Resolved
  • "Henning Gets International Swim Post". Chicago Tribune: 155. December 17, 1964.

Trying to sort out the copyright status of File:HenningHaroldDr.Swimmer.png to determine whether it can be used in Hal Henning. The file's uploader states the photo comes from the article "Henning Gets International Swim Post" that appeared on page 155 of the December 17, 1964, issue of the Chicago Tribune, but there was no attribution. Since the Tribune copyrighted all of its 1964 issues, an original photo taken by a Tribune staff photographer would most likely be under copyright protection until 2060. A search of "Henning Gets International Swim Post" for December 1964 on newspapers.com, however, gets 35 matches, and this might mean the story was a wire story picked up multiple papers, one of which might attribute the photo. I don't have a newspapers.com account, but perhaps someone who does can take a look to see whether any of those 35 matches (minus the Tribune) actually show the same photo and attribute it in some way, or whether the article itself has a by-line.

Thanks, -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW if you search with quotation marks around the phrase (exact match search), you only get 3 results, with all 3 being Chicago Tribune. I checked a couple results from your query and a couple results from "Dr Henning"/"Harold W. Henning"/a quote from the Chicago Tribune article + Dec 1964 and I don't see that photo anywhere else. page layout of article in The (Weekend?) Australian

edit

For You've Never Seen Everything.

This article contains multiple reviews back-to-back, split over multiple lines with no separators and no labels. I have access to the full text of this article through the 3 providers I linked, but they're all formatted as plain text with confusing layout, rather than page scans. Factiva tries to group some lines together, but their choice of how to split up the reviews doesn't match what makes sense to me.

The container is cited as The Australian by Factiva, The Weekend Australian by Nexis Uni, and both by EBSCOhost. Through the Wikipedia Library, we have access on ProQuest to both The Australian ("1 Edition") and Weekend Australian ("1 - All-round Country Edition") for this date, but neither of them seems to include this article, and the articles there are formatted as text rather than images anyways.

Does anyone have access to a hard-copy or an actual page scan of this? NewsBank might be useful for this if someone has access to it.

Thanks, Solomon Ucko (talk) 15:43, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just to clarify it a little: there is The Australian newspaper. Its Saturday edition includes the insert magazine titled The Weekend Australian Magazine. June 28, 2003 was Saturday. That said, though, the article about the newspaper says that "Saturday lift-outs include 'Review', focusing on books, arts, film, and television", so I think that's the newspaper itself (The Australian), not the magazine. None, sadly. I also tried calling their phone number from PAGASA (dost.gov.ph) and no results. I could walk-in to their office as a last resort, but it would be at most a month before I have the free time to do so.
I sent an e-mail on October 7, and a follow-up on October 12 and today. I also included your request for the 1965 report. RFNirmala (talk) 00:35, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tavantius, I have bad news. PAGASA provides no response. I've been calling their trunklines multiple times, but they (the local lines themselves, not necessarily the data) are "unavailable" from what I received. I was being directed to different departments, then eventually the data specialists of "1122" line. When I call their local line, I receive that their line in unavailable at the moment. The best I can advise is send an email yourself and be as detailed as possible (e.g. your info: name, organization, which they asked from me). You can ask again in WP:TAMBAY. For me, it would be very unlikely I'll send the cyclone report this month (or year, even). I'm sorry. RFNirmala (talk) 03:04, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Monograph of the genus Hypericum

edit

Hello all, I'm a specialist who's done a lot of work on the genus Hypericum, but my recent work has been stymied because I can't access a source. The main corpus of work on this genus was done by Norman Robson, who produced a monograph over the latter half of the 20th century. The first few volumes are freely available, but I've been unable to find the later volumes anywhere. If anyone has access to these papers or knows where to find them I would be incredibly grateful:

  1. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Hypericaceae). 5(2). Section 17. Hirtella to 19
  2. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Hypericaceae) 5(1). Sections 10. Olympia to 15/16. Crossophyllum
  3. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Hypericaceae) 9. Addenda, corrigenda, keys, lists and general discussion
  4. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Clusiaceae). Section 9. Hypericum sensu lato (part 3): Subsection 1. Hypericum series 2. Senanensia, subsection 2. Erecta and section 9b. Graveolentia
  5. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Guttiferae) 4(1). Sections 7. Roscyna to 9. Hypericum sensu lato (part 1)
  6. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Guttiferae). 6. Sections 20. Myriandra to 28. Elodes
  7. Studies in the genus Hypericum L. (Guttiferae) 8. Sections 29. Brathys (part 2) and 30. Trigynobrathys

And any others you might be able to find! Thank you in advance, being able to access these works will unlock my ability to comprehensively cover this fascinating genus. Fritzmann (message me) 13:29, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Specifically, I am looking for information on (a) Chawla's birthdate: specifically, was it altered from March 17 to July 1 to "enroll her in school at a younger than normal age" (as is mentioned on the article's talk page)? and (b) the specifics of Chawla's pilot license: specifically, I would like to verify the claim "Chawla held an FAA Flight Instructor certificate with airplane and glider ratings, and a commercial pilot license with single and multi-engine airplane, seaplane, and glider ratings."

Thanks, Spookyaki (talk) 04:52, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requested a physical copy through interlibrary loan—I love a good challenge. Bsoyka (tcg) 16:34, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Spookyaki, regarding your point (a), the birthdate-related detail is covered in the following source:
Salwi, Dilip M (20 February 2004). "Did you know Kalpana was called Monto?". Rediff.com. Archived from the original on August 20, 2017.

She passed her 10th class from the Haryana Board Examination in 1976. Actually, she was underage and got away by changing her date of birth from March 17, 1962 to July 1, 1961.

NitinMlk (talk) 22:40, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the help! Unfortunately, this does not strike mas as being a particularly reliable source, particularly when compared against academic sources that give her birth date as July 1, 1961. I would still prefer Harrison's account if possible. Spookyaki (talk) 22:52, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Spookyaki, if that's the case, then Harrison himself noted this detail,[1] and scholarly sources do mention this date of birth.[2] - NitinMlk (talk) 05:48, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I think the Springer source is enough for me. Thanks! That's super helpful. Still wouldn't mind getting the details directly from Harrison's biography if I can, so won't close this request quite yet, but still, this is very helpful. Spookyaki (talk) 05:59, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kalpana Chawla (Fig. 1.17) was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, Punjab, about 120 kilometers northwest of Delhi, in the State of Haryana, North India, to an archetypal family with strong drive. ... Most biographies report that she was born on July 1, 1961 but, as the authoritative biography by her husband Jean-Pierre Harrison reveals, that date entered her official records because it was used to enroll her in school a year in advance.

Kalpana Chawla3—her family called her "Montu"—was born in the small town of Karnal, of about 300,000 inhabitants, on March 17, 1962, in the Indian state of Haryana, one of the richest states of India, in the far north of the country.
@Spookyaki: Quotes pulled from the Harrison bio:
  • Kalpana Chawla was born in the small provincial city of Karnal, Punjab (now Haryana), India, on 17 March 1962. Her birthdate was subsequently stated as 1 June 1961 to enable her to enroll early in school at her insistence.
    — Harrison, p. 1

  • After a few flying lessons, I suggested to Kalpana that she take instruction from another instructor because I did not think I could teach her as required. She was upset with my suggestion but nevertheless quickly earned her Private Pilot License for singe-engine land airplanes. Soon afterward she began taking glider lessons for the add-on rating at Boulder Municipal Airport.
    — p. 46

  • Kalpana added to her pilot qualifications, eventually earning a Commercial Pilot License for single and multi-engine airplanes and seaplanes and for gliders. [...] Kalpana eventually acquired Certificated Flight Instructor qualifications for single-engine airplanes and instrument-airplane.

The "cladodont level" sharks of the Pennsylvanian black shales of central North America, 1985

edit
Cladodont, Stethacanthus, Phoebodus, Symmorium, Elasmobranchii, Symmoriiformes, Fish jaw

I already have access to the 1979 thesis version of this article in full, via this [5] ProQuest link, however I do not have access to the final published draft. This article redefines the Cladodont sharks and provides the initial description for the order Symmoriiformes and significant information on Cladoselache, Stethacanthus, Phoebodus and Cobelodus, as well as many taxa that do not yet have finished articles due to the lack of reliable sources. Additional information is provided regarding the evolution of Elasmobranchii and the evolution of fish jaws, which can also be added to these articles. I am under the impression that theses are not suitable citations for Wikipedia, and I assume a significant amount of revision took place between the publication of the thesis and the final article. I'm not able to provide a paywalled link to the article's 1985 version, nor a DOI.

Huge thank you to anyone who manages to track this down! Gasmasque (talk) 19:02, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I know it's a pretty huge paper, so it might not be reasonable to ask you to scan the whole thing. I really appreciate the help, and here's to hoping you can get ahold of the whole thing. Gasmasque (talk) 18:17, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They just sent me the 1979 copy from ProQuest... I'll grab the physical copy in around a week, following the holiday. Bsoyka (tcg) 04:05, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Proquest copy seems to be the only digitized version. Worst case scenario I can use that, it doesn't seem to be all that different from the final draft, but I'm hugely appreciative that you're willing to get ahold of/scan in the physical version yourself. Hopefully it all works out, and thank you for offering the help! Gasmasque (talk) 07:09, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had hoped they would scan the physical copy (or have another library do so), but I've found they get confused sometimes with differing years of the same article. I'll definitely get the physical copy when I can! Bsoyka (tcg) 17:14, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Icons of Black America: Breaking Barriers and Crossing Boundaries

edit

Hello

Does anyone have access to Icons of Black America: Breaking Barriers and Crossing Boundaries. ISBN 0313376433, 9780313376436. It's in 3 volumes. The reason I'm asking is because the Hattie McDaniel page, says: "In 1908, she entered a contest sponsored by the Women's Christian Temperance Union, reciting "Convict Joe", later claiming she had won first place." This is referenced to Icons of Black America (plus another link which doesn't seem to lead anywhere). If I Google it, there are websites which state that she did win this prize (ie https://collections.new.oscars.org/Details/Archive/70043581). I'd like to know if there is a story behind this so-called "claim" to have won a contest - it's an odd way of describing it, if she did in fact win. If anyone can access this, and find something about Hattie McDaniel reading this poem, I would be very appreciative. Thanks, Blackballnz (talk) 04:53, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Newspaper articles from Stars and Stripes and Nippon Times about an abacus contest

edit

The article on soroban describes a contest that took place in 1946 between an abacus operator and an electric calculator operator. The article currently states that it took place on November 12, 1946, but I have found evidence that it actually took place on the 11th; I'd like copies of the newspaper articles quoted in the current version of the article to see if they have more information, one from the Stars and Stripes (presumably a Pacific edition) and one from the Nippon Times. The articles aren't named or dated, but searching on or around November 12 should hopefully work. Arcorann (talk) 12:25, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think you know that a Pacific American 11th November evening is a Japanese 12th November morning? – Doc TaxonTalk23:22, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arcorann: For the newspaper articles:
The Nippon Times published an article on page 2 titled "Matsuzaki Fingers His Way to Victory In Abacus-Calculating Machine Contest" on Wednesday, November 13, 1946. The first sentence mentioned Monday, which was the 11th:

Civilization, on the threshold of the atomic age, tottered Monday afternoon as the 2,000-year-old abacus beat the electric calculating machine in adding, subtracting, dividing and a problem including all thee with multiplcation thrown in, according to UP.

The Stars and Stripes (Pacific) published an article on page 1 titled "Abacus Expert Downs Calculating Machine Surrendering Only In Multiplication Race", by Lawrence Stern, on Tuesday, November 12, 1946. The first sentence mentioned yesterday, which was the 11th :

The machine Age took a step backward yesterday at the Ernie Pyle Theater as the abacus, centuries old, dealt defeat to the most up-to-date electric calculating machine now being used by the United States Government.

Please send me an email for a scan of the Nippon Times article. The article from The Stars and Stripes is accessible via TWL through Ancestry.com. The proxy search function is broken, but after playing around with it, I found the direct link, which should work: here ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:34, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Spookyaki:   Sent I found a link through Google that has a scan of that chapter, but since it probably violates WP:COPYLINK, I've emailed it to you instead of posting it here. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:42, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
