Questions about sourcing

Ages ago you added a "primary sources" tag to Paul Blainey in this edit. Two sources, the first is MIT saying "Blainey works for us", a primary source--MIT is both the source of the fact and the reporter. The second is the Broad Institute at Harvard saying "Blainey did this at Washington, that at Harvard, and other at Stanford." Is this

  1. a secondary source for all three claims because Broad can be presumed to exercise editorial control by vetting claims made by one primary source (Blainey) against facts known to other primary sources (UW/Harvard/Stanford), or
  2. a primary source for the second claim because Broad is an affiliate of/hosted by Harvard, so in a sense also a primary source of the fact, or
  3. a primary source for all three claims because Blainey is a Broad affiliate and therefore claims made by Blainey are effectively claims made by Broad?

Thank you. Yappy2bhere (talk) 20:08, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Yappy2bhere: At the time I added the tag (diff), there were only two sources in the article, both of which I considered to be primary. The article presently has six sources. If you feel that the tag is no longer applicable, feel free to remove it from the article. North America1000 23:52, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Northamerica1000,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:32, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

How to add categories to AFD

Hi. I saw how you added more categories for Vicky Badshah deletion. Can you please help me and tell how I can do it? I am new at AFD and learning. How many max or min categories should be present? Aloolkaparatha (talk) 11:46, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello Aloolkaparatha: Actually, I performed deletion sorting for the entry, which lists the discussion on various deletion sorting pages to make it easier for users to find articles they may be personally interested in. Shellwood added the Biography AfD debates category (diff). The easiest way to add categories is to use the codes listed atop on the Category:AfD debates page, replacing the question mark in the {{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD}} template with the appropriate code. For example, for a biographical entry, change the question mark in {{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD|?}} to "B", so it then reads as "{{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD|B}}". which then lists the discussion in the Category:AfD debates (Biographical) category. Administrators' newsletter – October 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).

  Guideline and policy news

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

  Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

DYKs in Portal:Vietnam

Hi Northamerica1000, I'm cleaning up portal Vietnam and saw that the DYKs section seems to be automatically generated. Thus is there a way to manually remove articles that are not directly related to Vietnam topics? (e.g. Ted Sampley is an American Vietnam War soldier)  Băng Tỏa  10:25, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@Băng Tỏa: Thanks for your work on the portal! Template:Transclude selected recent additions/doc has some useful hints. You could try |not1=Vietnam War to exclude that subtopic, or |not1=Sampley to get rid of just this one entry. (|not2= etc. are also available.) Certes (talk) 10:48, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
@Băng Tỏa: Thanks to Certes for provision of the above information. If this does not work out, DYK entries can always be manually curated, by entering them in manually. This can be done on a single subpage that lists multiple entries, from where by using transclusion, randomly selected entries can be displayed on the main portal page. Donavon Warren

Hello Northamerica1000, I came across this name after watching the movie, Wheels as he was the producer of the movie. I would like to know if he is notable for having a page now because the one that was created back in 2017 or 2018 was deleted by you. I can provide you with some reliable, independent sources at your request which proves the subject passes both WP:NACTOR, and WP:GNG. Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you. Ugochukwu75 (talk) 06:41, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

@Ugochukwu75: I hesitate to simply restore the article, because after it was deleted per the deletion discussion, it was then deleted two more times per WP:G4 (see deletion log for the page). So, yes, at this point, feel free to provide the sources here, and we can discuss them. North America1000 03:59, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.
