Combining Talk Discussions Re Disney Film Lists
Dear SpikeJones, Kasper2006, Elikrotupos, SWatsi, Blitz Lutte, NealP, LtPowers, SofaKing381222, Collectionian, Cartoon Boy, Casey14, Chris1219, NuclearWarfare, SkinnyPrude, and Parker 1297:
Recently, it appears that you all have been interested in the various Disney discussions regarding the proper categorization of Disney animated films. There has been recent activity regarding the proper structure of the various Disney feature length film lists. Unfortunately the discussions regarding the lists / pages are taken place on a number of talk pages. Before we get further into a long discussion regarding the various structural issues with regards to List of Disney theatrical animated features, Template:Disney theatrical animated features, Walt Disney Animated Classics, Category:Disney animated features canon, List of Disney feature films and what ever other lists are out there, I would suggest that we somehow combine the discussions (both past and present) into one place. This will allow easy review on single page for users interested in this matter. It will also allow future users an easy access to whatever rational is used to support the structure of the various lists (including keeping or merging certain lists.). I believe that in placing this discussion in one central location, it alleviates repetitive discussion, allows issues are not constantly revisited in different locations and hopefully sets the future standard in updating the various lists with the verifiable sources. I honestly do not know if there is Wikipedia policy on this, nor do I know what the proper way of creating such a place. But I do believe it would useful.
I have posted this suggestion on the all the User’s talk pages above and apologize if I have missed any person who may be interested in this matter. If you know of a user interested in this matter, please invite any that person to discuss these issues. .If I have included you and you have no interest in this matter, I sincerely apologize and please delete this message.

- I'm not sure if I ever participated in such a discussion, but my advice to you would be to find a WikiProject, such as WP:WikiProject Disney and have a detailed discussion on its talk page. NW (Talk) (How am I doing?) 11:08, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

I have posted the following message on the Discussion page for the brief article on Kaplan University. Please advise. -- logger9 (talk) 23:57, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
"I would like to propose the above additions to the existing article, as seen on my current user page. Please let me know if you have any objections to these changes; and if so, why. If I do not receive any response to this posting within several days, then I will assume there is no problem with me posting it. Thanks !"
- Logger9's edits are glariingly POV and make the article appear as if it was written by Kaplan's marketing dept. If there's some useful edit they'd like to make, that's fine...but the rewrites logger9 has done does nothing more than fluff up the article.--averagejoe (talk) 03:33, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- That is not true at all. Perhaps the edits have not been perfectly following NPOV, but they do contain some useful information. The more proper thing to do in the case is to comment those sections out and help rewrite them, which is what I tried to do by improving it as much as I could in the time that I had, and adding an {{advert}} tag to hopefully draw more attention to the article. Perhaps you could help out in making that article more NPOV? NW (Talk) (How am I doing?) 15:50, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Outline update - Good news and bad news - 06/08/2009
The big push continues.
And it seems to be working!
The good news is that there's growing support for outlines, and there are more editors than ever editing them!
The bad news is that the complainers are disproportionately represented on the project's various talk pages. While many editors work diligently on the front end, a handful of complainers are trying to tear down the project behind the scenes. Fortunately, barely enough supporters have been watching those pages that no consensus for moving or merging the outlines has succeeded. So far...
Big problem: ignorance of what outlines are for and their benefits
Most of the opposition seems to be unaware of the complete range of what outlines are used for. They just don't get it.
This is why it is important to complete the outline article draft. An article with a comprehensive treatment of outlines would be the perfect place to refer anybody unfamiliar with outlines to.
Opposers also don't seem to understand how outlines differ from some other page type that they prefer. Some think articles are good enough as an overview, others think portals are more in-depth, still others think categories or navigation boxes are the most efficient and useful way to organize and present topical information. Some have simply never seen an "Outline of" page before and think they are a new type of page (they've been around under other names since 2001).
If you run across anyone who doesn't understand the role of outlines on Wikipedia, Wikipedia:Why do we have outlines in addition to...? might help reduce their misconceptions or uncertainties about outlines.
On the bright side, you've got to see this...
To add the outlines and related support pages to your watchlist (takes less than 30 seconds), cut and paste them from Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist into your raw watchlist. For a way to improve the display of your watchlist - by namespace (very useful) - see Watchlist sorter, or use the "super fast upgrade" at WP:OTS.
Or go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist using Related changes (currently without the talk pages) and click on "Related changes" in the toolbox menu on the sidebar on the left side of your screen.
The big push
The big push started with about a thousand banners and notices being placed on article talk pages all over Wikipedia.
But it didn't stop there...
Welcome our new members...
The following Wikipedians have joined the OOK team.
Be sure to stop by their talk pages and introduce yourselves.
- Tarheel95 - going after the Main Page.
- Vivio Testarossa / Feinoha - here to help.
- Burningview - made a splash at MfD with Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Drafts/Outline of British Columbia (see the talk page for the MfD link - lots of support there).
Enter the mentors!
I asked a bunch of mentors at WP:ADOPT for advice. Several of them answered on my talk page. Most of those who replied were happy to help, and posted some very good ideas. A couple even joined the project.
Here are their ideas, and what is being done about them. A few of the tasks still need volunteers:
- Strdst grl: Create and place project banners - already Done
- Strdst grl & The Earwig: put an animated ad for the project in WP:BANNER - Our graphics specialist Penubag is looking into it.
- Strdst grl: Create a userbox for the project - assigned to Penubag.
- Garden: Ask to have outlines added to next year's WikiCup competition - Done (proposal posted)
- Tarheel95: Add a link to Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge to the Main Page - Tarheel95 is taking on the creation of the proposal
- SriMesh: Create an outreach subpage to WPOOK - Done (invitation coming soon, see below)
- SriMesh: (Create a newsletter archive subpage) - Done
- SriMesh: Add a feed to AlexNewArtBot to gather links to new outlines and post them on a page. Then personally invite new creators to the project. - who wants to tackle the feed?
- SriMesh: Assign someone to monitor the outlines via watchlist, and invite new outline editors to the project - any volunteers?
- Related: Create an invitation - Penubag is working on it.
- SriMesh: Create Template:Expand outline similar to Template:Expand list, which adds each outline it is posted on to Category:Incomplete outlines, where editors (who are browsing the categories) can find them and work on them - to be assigned
- SriMesh: Add the above template to incomplete outlines - upcoming AWB task
- The Earwig: "Tell your wikifriends about it" - I've told mine, have you told yours?
- The Earwig: "Collaborate with other WikiProjects" - we've been doing this from the start (each outline is associated with at least one other WikiProject).
- : move the projected outline to a subpage of WP:WPOOK - Done
Linking to outlines has begun
To the tops of about 30 subject articles, I placed a test batch of hatnotes leading to the corresponding outlines. The hatnotes look like this:
- For a topical guide to this subject, see Outline of X.(Hidden: <!- PLEASE LEAVE THIS LINE IN PLACE because it leads to the page that serves as the table of contents for Wikipedia's overall coverage of this subject. Thank you.-->
The rationale for the hatnotes is that each outline is a topical guide for its subject, and since tables of contents go at the front of a book, a link to each outline should be placed at the front of its subject.
Unfortunately, not all editors agree. Some of the hatnotes have already disappeared. :(
Some past discussions pertaining to the existence or location of outlines
Note that the "Lists of topics" are of two types, including outlines and indexes, so discussions to remove, move, or merge those are usually relevant to the OOK. Also, outlines are a type of list, so discussions that affect lists in general also pertain to outlines. We've got to be on our toes!

WPOOK advert banner under development, here's the beta...
Penubag needs feedback.
I've posted a few changes for him to make to it.
Please post additional comments and suggestions for him at User talk:Penubag#Chocolate banner.
Thank you.
Need help explaining WikiCup proposal
I posted a proposal to add outlines to next year's WikiCup, and nobody there seems to understand outlines.
Help.
Outline collaboration!
As you know, Penubag is working on a banner to advertise the Outline WikiProject. And he's almost done.
The banner prominently presents the "Outline of chocolate", which of course will become the most widely advertised outline as soon as the banner goes live. The first thing many editors will do after seeing the banner is look for that outline.
The problem is, we don't have one.
So that's our first outline collaboration!
I started a draft this morning.
It needs to be finished and moved to the article namespace before we can start using Penubag's banner ad!
Come join in on the fun. It's chocolate!

AWB task - place banner on country WikiProjects' talk pages
You might want to run this by your friend Martin before you start. I didn't see a way to apply his code from the last time (because the subject pages have "WikiProject" in the title).
This is a 2-pass AWB task, and I doubt it will work on all of them (which means checking and correcting afterwards).
Pass one
First, set AWB to skip non-existing pages.
Set the option to bypass redirects.
Also set AWB to skip pages with "subject is featured in the". (That's so it will skip the pages I've already placed the banner on).
Then make a list from User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox15 (list of country WikiProject talk pages). Some anonymous IP dude tweaked the page - so if this step doesn't work, let me know.
Then append the following to the top of each page:
{{subst:User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox16}}
Doing...NW (Talk) 04:05, 10 June 2009 (UTC)- One question here, before I finish this task. Am I supposed to be posting on the WikiProject pages, or on the WikiProject talk pages? You said the latter, but gave me a link to the former. NW (Talk) 04:11, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- the talk pages for the WikiProjects. I'm looking at my Sandbox15 in another window, and they look like Wikipedia talk links to me. Where's the link you were referring to? The Transhumanist 04:23, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- I just purged the sandbox's talk page, in case its new data wasn't showing up. It should work now. Let me know what you see on sandbox15. The Transhumanist 04:26, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- I see WT, but AWB makes them come up as WP. I'll just convert them properly and move on ;) NW (Talk) 04:28, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

- Did you set AWB to skip non-existing pages? The Transhumanist 04:31, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I did. I made a mistake the first time, but I rollbacked/G7'd everything, so this pass, everything should go well :)
- I don't think I should be doing this when I am tired. I'm sorry. Should I be appending or preprending this? Appending this puts the notice at the wrong place, while [Prepending] it messes it up as well. Could you advise please? NW (Talk) 04:41, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- The library is closing now. We should try this again tomorrow. I'll go over the instructions to see if I can improve them. The Transhumanist 05:00, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Pass two
Then run AWB on the same list to make the following search/replace:
Search for:
"WPT|WikiProject "
(without the quotes but with the space following it)
And replace with:
"WPT|"
(without the quotes)

Comments
Then check each one (using Linky?), and fix any redlinks.
The idea is to post {{Outline of knowledge coverage WPT}} on each country WikiProject talk page and have the link to its corresponding outline show up correctly.
For examples of what it is supposed to look like, I've already placed it on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Algeria, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albania, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Åland, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Afghanistan, and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Abkhazia.
Thank you.
Good luck. :)
Have fun!
The Transhumanist 22:12, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- If you were to add the following
}}
onto, say Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Abkhazia, then the outcome will be which is probably not what you want! I'll have a think about this and if I come up with anything then I'll let you know. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:26, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- I thought I might have found a way to remove the first 12 characters from the parameter using string functions, but unfortunately these cannot be substituted. So I'm back at square 1. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:17, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Regex gadget
They've added a gadget tab in "my preferences", and there's a regex menu you can activate.
Let me know if it's any good. )
(several minute delay...)
Wow.
But the documentation is confusing. If you install it via "my preferences", don't install it again via the instructions in the documentation! It will double up the menu on the sidebar. It's double on mine, and I can't get rid of the copy. :(
The menu shows up when you are in edit mode, but it will not work if you are in WikEd.
Just click on "Custom regex" and an input form will appear above your edit window. I didn't notice the damn thing right away, because you have to scroll up to see it!
Have fun.
AWB task - place WikiProject banner on index articles' talk pages
WP:WPINDEX is the sister project of WP:WPOOK. (Outlines are tables of contents, which go hand-in-hand with indexes).
And because indexes are prominently linked to from the outlines, we've been cleaning them up. (Outlines have an uncanny ability to reveal problem areas that need tending to, but that's a good thing).
What I need you to do is, make a list using AWB (with its "What links here" feature), of all the articles that link to the applicable alphabetical templates listed at Category:TOC templates. (You can use "make list" to input the links from more than one page). There are some non-alphabetical ones in there - please do not include those (which means you'll need to spot check some pages that link to each template before you include them in the list). Also, do not include the ones for category pages. Just the ones for alphabetical list articles.
Then save the list you've made to a file, and convert the links to talk space links.
Set AWB to skip pages that include "{{WikiProject Index}}" (without the quotes)
Also set AWB to skip non-existing pages (just in case). We don't want to add the template to the talk pages of redirects. (Make sure you cover all the bases on this, as I might have left out a step).
Then clear the list in AWB, and load your converted list. Use AWB's list filter feature to filter it so that it only includes links to pages in the talk namespace (article talk pages only).
Set AWB to prepend this: {{WikiProject Index}}
Then run AWB on the task.
This is a big task, affecting thousands of pages, so be careful. Look at some pages that link to Template:WikiProject Index before you start the task, to see the desired result. This banner should only be placed on the talk pages of articles which are alphabetical lists.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Have fun.
The Transhumanist 00:40, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
P.S.: You can use the "sandbox" method you mentioned from the previous (glossary) task.
- Are you sure that this should affect thousands of pages? The total list I came out to, unfiltered, was about ~550. Filtered to onl ythe article and talk pages, it becomes only about 30 or so. Are you sure you gave me the right link? NW (Talk) 02:55, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what is going wrong. But if you go to the Template:CompactTOC (which is one of those listed at Category:TOC templates) and click on "What links here", select "article" space, then click on "500", you'll see that this one template alone is placed on around 1200 articles! Maybe you should try AWB on this template first, to get the hang of it. The Transhumanist 03:14, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- That...is really weird. Is there any chance that you could create the lists, save it as an XML file, and email me that file (email on my userpage). That would be great if you could do that, because I can't generate more than 30 pages... NW (Talk) 03:46, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'll look into it from this end. In the meantime, you have another pretty big task further up the page to complete...

- OK, we'll do this task in batches. Batch 1 is on User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox43. Make a list from it using AWB, and filter out the "Glossary of" pages before you begin the run. Make sure you set up AWB for the task first, as mentioned above. ;)

Previous task
Somebody came along and edited one of my sandboxes, and turned its talk page into a parameter input box, turning the combo into a power tool! Cool trick. Unfortunately, he accidentally placed the wrong input data on the talk page, foiling the task. I've fixed that, so you should be good to go.
#AWB task - place banner on country WikiProjects' talk pages
Let me know if it doesn't work. :)
The Transhumanist 03:57, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- There seems to be a bug; all the templates have a red link. I also think that you shouldn't spam such notices in such an attention-seeking way at the top of Wikiproject talk pages. Please fix the links or remove the templates. Thank you, Kusma (talk) 20:11, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- Links fixed; I was in the middle of my first pass when you posted to me, and I had yet to go through my second pass. NW (Talk) 22:52, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- There is no bug. It was a 2-part task. We knew it would produce redlinks, and the 2nd-pass fixed them.
- NW, I've fixed the remaining redlinks, and have rearranged the banners so that the WikiProjects' own banners come first. Done
- The Transhumanist 23:15, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- I generally object to making WikiProject talk pages to display one single article so prominently while there may be many others that are much more important to the project to fix. Invitations to work on articles are fine, but you post them in the bottom sections like everyone else, not in a special banner at the top. I have removed the banner from the Germnay project talk page. Kusma (talk) 07:07, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Batch 2
I'll have batch 2 of the indexes ready for you in about 15 minutes.
The Transhumanist 23:23, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
OK, batch 2 is in User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox43. Filter out everything that doesn't have the word "List" in the title! And make sure you read the task's instructions again, just to make sure you don't overlook anything.
Cool.
Good luck.

Kaplan and Logger9
I tried to work with you regarding the Kaplan University article and Logger9's problematic edits. I was fine with the materials being commented out until corrected, but evidently Logger9 doesn't subscribe to that methodology. They added it all back in...no relevant references, little relevant material, no consensus, no discussion. I edited it down to fit, tagged the appropriate sections, asked for additional assistance. Logger9 would do well to move on to a topic they are capable of editing - perhaps something technical - but this page and Logger9 don't seem tto be a good fit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JRStutler (talk • contribs) 21:40, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Hmm ( global sysops )
I just undid your change, but are you saying that global sysops don't have +ops rights on en.wiki? –xenotalk 22:28, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
- The global sysop system is set up so that each project has to opt into the global sysop list. Once the project opts into the list, only then will a global sysop have the technical ability to block, delete, etc. on that particular project. Since enwiki never gained the consensus for adding itself to the global sysop list, I decided to just go ahead and mark it as rejected. NW (Talk) 22:31, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Notability?
Wow, how does a reference linking to that business website make the building notable? In my opinion it only makes it spamlike as this isn't a reliable third party source as required by WP:RS. So I guess I am very curious how the notability was established. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 18:36, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- Per WP:BEFORE, such an article, which is semi-well well-written and indicates that there could be more out there on the topic, ought to be researched for more reliable sources, and tagged with {{prod}} or sent to WP:AFD if there is none. Sincerely, NW (Talk) 18:40, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- A lot of spam articles are well written but this clearly fails the notability requirements I would quote. "Sources should directly support the information as it is presented in an article and should be appropriate to the claims made; if an article topic has no reliable sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on it." Hell in a Bucket (talk) 18:46, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- Per WP:BEFORE: "When nominating an article for deletion due to sourcing or notability concerns, make a good-faith attempt to confirm that such sources aren't likely to exist." I just wanted to check that no sources really did exist; feel free to retag the article with Prod if you cannot find any. NW (Talk) 18:48, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Hell in a Bucket (talk) 18:46, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- I allready nominated for AFD, I just personally thought it was a waste of time tp have to do that on what I considered obvious spam. oh well the sky isn't falling and the worlds not ending so nothing to lose sleep over. Cheers Hell in a Bucket (talk) 18:50, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Still I am not satisfied his notability. I live India. There is lost of tele-soap actor working in India. At present in India here 80-100 channel running 24 hours 30 min slot a tele-soap. In each tele-soap there near about 100 actor actress and crew. Are you think all are notable?- Jayanta Nath (Talk|Contrb) 18:43, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- Wow; I knew that India has a lot of soaps, but I never thought there were that many. Those are quite a bit of actors/actresses. However, something that debates the subjective nature of notability should be argued at WP:AFD instead. See User:SoWhy/Common A7 mistakes#The big mistakes for more about when A7 should be used. WPOOK's advert banner is done!
Is it perfect? Can it be improved?
Penubag loves feedback. Please let him know if it can be further improved.
Thank you.
The Transhumanist 22:54, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Hi NW - I've responses to your addition of the COI template to this article on its talk page. I've also removed the {{advert}} tag, since I see no evidence that it is any way like an advertisement (which would be pointless anyway, considering that the company no longer exists). I can understand the concern, given one of the main editors' user name, but (s)he's been kept in check by other editors. Grutness...wha? 02:08, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, OK, thank you. I was just going through that article while patrolling the back end of the Special:NewPages run rather at a frantic pace (as the backlog is getting pretty bad), and I am afraid I must have clicked advert, gone back and changed it, and just messed up somewhere there. As for the {{coi}} tag, feel free to remove the tag; I didn't investigate the history past the last diff, so I am unsure if anyone else has gone over the article. NW (Talk) 02:13, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I know what it's like to go through a patrolling backlog at high speed - it's easy to get one wrong without realising it! Keep up the good work :) Grutness...wha? 06:00, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I added 0.1 seconds to each of the first 10 articles. The other articles that appear are actually duplicates and the final frame is just a whole screen of text. Those I kept short since we wouldn't want anyone to notice those :). -- penubag (talk) 06:44, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

A suggestion and a request (new member task)
We have a new member on the advanced wiki-tools team. Maybe you'd like to welcome User talk:MacMed.
I've given him his first task, but I don't have much online time today (and I'm unsure how much I'll be on over the next couple of days). Would you be so kind as to check in on him from time and see how he's doing?
I'd appreciate it.
Thank you.
The Transhumanist 23:09, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- Sure thing, TT (Hmm, what can I call you?). NW (Talk) 23:12, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- TT is fine. He'll probably figure it out. Even though it looks like pi. :) The Transhumanist 23:13, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
And a task for you...
The same as MacMed's task, except do it on the Geography and places section of the OOK (using your own sandbox page of course).
I've already done the continent of Africa (and all its countries), so skip those.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Have fun.
The Transhumanist 23:19, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- Done with Europe, but I am a bit tired, and I wonder if it is possible for someone else to do the rest of them. The ones still left to do are at User:NuclearWarfare/TranshumanistTaskOf231914June2009. NW (Talk) 00:52, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
You want to delete just the talk, or the talk and the redirect? I'm confused. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 00:29, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Just this page please, not the actual redirect page. Also, Durova wants me to invite you to WikiVoices; do you have a Skype account? NW (Talk) 00:54, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
DYK for Nicolas Jacques Pelletier
Note on current task
I was testing out another sandbox template, and did the main link in the see also sections for the countries up through Estonia. Please pick up where I left off. The same sandbox you were using will be fine.
DYK entries
Hi, I was wondering if you could comment on my two DYK entries currently on the nominations page, for Orly's Draw-A-Story and Bluebirds Flying High. There seems to be quite a backlog at the moment. Thanks. 03md 19:47, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
- I have replied to one, and asked a friend to help the other, as I had some concerns with it. NW (Talk) 00:51, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

sandbox template fixed
In sandbox46, I've implemented the changes from Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive62#How do you use a variable to insert a page's name uncapitalized?
That should eliminate the need for a second pass.

P.S.: You should copy the code somewhere convenient so that you can modify it to use the trick on similar tasks in the future.
- Wow, this looks really great; thanks. NW (Talk) 18:03, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

I just got a little regex lesson from the guys over at WP:VPT, and I've copied it to User:The Transhumanist/Regexes.

Outline update - Full Steam Ahead! - 06/18/2009
Several members of the WikiProject have been hard at work.
Buaidh has been building and refining the outlines on the U.S. States, the states' historical outlines, and the Historical outline of the United States. Lately, his edits have dominated the project's watchlist readout. (I think he's overdue for a barnstar or two. hint hint)
Penubag has been working on medals for all the main branches of the OOK, and has completed the OOK WikiProject's animated advert banner (see below).
Highfields has been filling in the currencies for each country on their respective outlines.
NuclearWarfare and Thehelpfulone have been busy with WP:AWB, posting banners and notices, and helping our sister project, the Index WikiProject, get established. Indexes work hand-in-hand with the outlines and are prominently linked to from the top of most of them. And the outlines, which serve as tables of contents, are only as good as the pages they link to.
Since we started integrating (linking) the OOK and its support pages into the encyclopedia and into the Wikipedia community, activity on outlines has been increasing. Though there's still much left to do.
But I digress. There are a couple more...
User talk:Stefan is building the Outline of sharks.
User talk:MacMed has joined our advanced wiki-tools team, and is currently adding links to outlines in the corresponding subject articles' see also sections.
Be sure to stop by their talk pages and say "hi".
WPOOK's advert banner has gone live!
Penubag has finished this WikiProject's animated advert banner, and it is now being displayed on the Wikipedia ads template which in turn is displayed on about 2000 user pages. Each time someone access one of those pages, there is a 1 in 184 chance of them viewing this:
Wikipedia ads | file info – #184 |
If you'd like to display the banner on your userpage locked-on to the ad as above, use the following code:
{{Wikipedia ads|ad=184}}
(By the way, it's been awhile since we've barnstarred Penubag).
Watchers needed!
If you haven't already, please add the entire project's watchlist to your watchlist. Here's how:
- From the edit window, copy and paste Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist into your raw watchlist.
- Or go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist using Related changes and click on "Related changes" in the toolbox menu in Wikipedia's sidebar on the left hand side of the screen.
Check the watchlist every time you log on!
I forgot to mention this step above. :)
The OOK is in 5 other Wikipedias?
I can't make heads or tails of 'em, but these links were on Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge:

Resurrected from the grave yard...
I discovered an AfD discussion on possibly the first article named "Outline of", which was called Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics, and which was created 4 years ago. Of course they deleted it. But now it has many friends, and so it has risen from the dead. :)
See the DRV discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2009 June 7#Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics.
A diamond buried in project space
- When G716 found the page "Learn" tucked away as a subpage of the Probability WikiProject, he thought "This deserves to be in the article space", and moved it to the encyclopedia. See Outline of probability.
Recruiting
Recruiters needed. Drop me a note if you are interested.
Advice from the mentors
- Astatine-210, Strdst grl, and Willscrlt - link to the outlines from the corresponding subject articles' see also sections - this is underway by MacMed (non-country outlines) and User talk:NuclearWarfare (counry outlines).
- Astatine-210 - add a link to the outlines to the disambiguation pages of the corresponding subjects - good idea. Since "Outline" is just the type of page, not the subject, I think these might qualify for inclusion on disambiguation pages. We need someone to look into the relevant guidelines on this.
- User talk:SimonTrew - provide a badge (userbox) for WPOOK members to add to their user pages - Penubag will have one for us soon.
- Zachary crimsonwolf - create a card explaining outlines, and send it to everyone you know, and make it viral (by including a request for the recipients to send the card to everyone they know) - this task has been split in three:
- Creation of a "thank you for your interest" card which introduces (explains) outlines, to send to queriers, new participants to discussions, those who seem to be confused about outlines, etc.
- Creation of a thank you card / invitation to the WPOOK, to send to users we see working on outlines, including a request for them to invite others whom they think might be interested
- weebiloobil - contact Wikignomes - OK...
- 3. Creation of an invitation to Wikignomes, with a brief rundown on the types of tasks there are for them to do on the outlines. The invitation will include a request for them to invite anyone they think would enjoy working on outlines.
- weebiloobil - add examples to Wikipedia:Outlines - more examples will be added as suitable outlines are completed
- weebiloobil - add a picture to Wikipedia:Outlines (it doesn't have to be relevant), to provide atmosphere and to break it up visually and add a splash of color - will do, and we'll add a caption to make it relevant, with a link to the outline on that subject. Thank you for the idea.
- Zachary crimsonwolf - ask Jimbo Wales to bestow the award(s) for the country outlines contest, once you get it going first - we'll give that a try
- Zachary crimsonwolf - ask everyone in the project to inform their acquaintances around Wikipedia about the OOK - will do, as soon as the cards
- UzEE - collaborate with all the WikiProjects you share scope with - we've placed a banner on their talk pages, and have placed task notices on some. We'll be posting more tasks, and plan to create a section on contents system development and maintenance for each WikiProject page itself.
- SriMesh - if you can't get outlines added to next year's WikiCup, then create your own WikiCup-like contest - there's 6 months left to this year to address reservations and work out the details at WikiCup. In the meantime, there's the 200-WikiProject contest, which needs input.
More outline tasks
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Drafts/Outline of chocolate draft - our current outline collaboration!
- Outline of psychology - someone moved a big chunk of this article to the talk page, leaving a big gap in the outline. Editors are needed to add subheadings and links.
- See also links - add {{main|Outline of x}} (where "x" is the subject) to the see also section of the corresponding subject article of each outline

- Outline of sharks - under construction in article space
- Outline of Hinduism (converted from "List of Hinduism-related topics")

CSDH bug
Hi NW! As it turns out, I made a small error in my version of csdhelper.js, that caused my signature to be applied to the remove notifications instead of yours. I have fixed the bug now. However, as you may or may not know, Alex has now updated his original script with many new features, including better support for non-admin use. If I were you, I would simply switch to his version. Regards, decltype (talk) 23:49, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you for alerting me. Also, I must thank you for your help in adapting it for us non-administrators while the original was sysop-only. My regards, NW (Talk) 23:51, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Nah, thank Alex instead. Making things work is a far greater achievement than complaining about that which doesn't. I usually just do the latter. Regards, decltype (talk) 00:25, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
If CSD G7 is the only issue involved with this AFD, it should be closed for this reason. IMHO CSD G7 should be completely "non controversial" like PROD and the fact that someone has placed a "rescue" tag on the article shows that its deletion would be "controversial". I won't close it myself because at this time this remains just "my opinion" (though there has been some support for this position) but I recommend that you withdraw with leave to speedy renominate if someone has a reason for deletion besides G7.
Of course if, by the time you see this message, someone !votes "delete" with a sound rationale unrelated to G7, it could be left open. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 13:49, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for your notice. The rescue tag was probably added after I went to bed, or I would have withdrawn it then. I have asked the original author to write up deletion arguments (see above thread), which I offered to post at AfD for him. That would be all right, correct? NW (Talk) 15:26, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
Outline collaboration #2: Outline of Gibraltar
This outline is approaching completion.
I added a bunch more links, finding them with the following Google site-specific searches of Wikipedia:
(You can use the wikicode for the links above as the basis for new searches - just replace "Gibraltar" with any other country or region name).
Request: please redirect the redlinks! (bluelinking...)
The redlinks need to be bluelinked where possible. The most useful way is to create redirects leading to the material (which is usually included in a section of an article - see Wikipedia:Redirect#Redirects to page sections. That way, when the redirect pages are replaced by the actual articles, the links will already point to the right places.
Please take a crack at it, and bluelink a few.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Have fun.

Jason Pierce and Jeremy May Deletion
Hi. You denied my request to delete these two pages because a lot of edits have been made to them both. First I'll tell you the Jason Pierce page does get a lot of edits but they are always considered vandalism. Most people will put small things in calling Jason names or creating unknown and/or unneeded info. Jason shows no notability other than being on The Ultimate Fighter where he was pulled from competing because of an illness. TreyGeek and myself both agree that the page be deleted.
Jeremy May's article should be deleted because he also shows no notability other than being on The Ultimate Fighter. The other thing about May is, he doesn't even compete in mixed martial arts any more. He has not fought for any big promotions and holds no titles. There is no reason for him to have an article. Thank you for reading. Justastud15 (talk) 10:08, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- There were many edits to both articles though; per the G7 criteria, you may only use the speedy deletion tag if you are the sole contributor of content. However, if you send the article to WP:AFD, I am sure the fact that you are the large contributor to both the articles will be listened to. Thanks, NW (Talk) 15:17, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'm fairly new and currently learning the ropes. One major problem I have is deletions. I do not understand how it works or how to nominate. I asked advise from TreyGeek and he told me to add the Author deletion tag. I would appreciate it if you would help me out and add these to the deletion log thing? Justastud15 (talk) 04:26, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- If you write me individual reasons for deleting both the articles, I would be happy to file an AfD for you to start the discussion process.
- Also, Ron Ritzman has recommended to me that I withdraw the AfD nomination for Roger Bowling. I shall attend to his request, but if you still feel like the article should be deleted, you could write me a rationale for deleting that one as well, and I would be happy to renominate it for you. NW (Talk) 15:21, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- The reasons are in the first post I did. If you want something else I could do that but if not they are all up there. Justastud15 (talk) 23:35, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- AfDs filed; links to them are on your talk page. NW (Talk) 00:06, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Outline update - Push push push - 06/25/2009
Work is proceeding apace...
- Julian is working on getting a bot account (and he delivered this update as his trial run).
- Penubag is working on the Project page and upcoming contest.
- Buaidh is developing all of the U.S. state historical outlines.
- Tarheel95 is writing a proposal to add a link to the Main Page leading to the the OOK.
- Highfields is integrating the OOK into the encyclopedia by deorphanizing outlines by placing a {{main}} link in the see also section of the subject articles that have a corresponding outline.
- I've been trying to keep up with them. :)
- New members
- Minnecologies - developing Outline of forestry and is watching the big picture.
- Mnation2 - improving Outline of Lebanon
- Hatnotes
The current consensus is that we can't place a hatnote leading to an outline at the top of a subject articles unless the outline being presented is of at least the same quality-level as the article.
- What's next...
Improve outline quality by completing them.
Place hatnotes for the outlines of high enough quality.
Guidelines pertaining to outlines need to be updated. Outlines emerged as a class of pages only a few months ago, and most of the relevant guidelines don't cover them specifically. For example, Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists is incredibly out of date.
Invite wikignomes, wikielves, and wikifairies (all 2500+ of them) to help on the outlines .
Identify 600 more subjects with coverage extensive enough to justify outlines, create rudimentary drafts for them, and post notices to the corresponding WikiProjects and subject talk pages to help build them.
Convert outlines titled "List of" to outline articles, and add them to the OOK. There are a few hundred of these. Conversion instructions are needed.
Add a description of outlines to About Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Basic navigation, and add tips about outlines to the WP:TOTD and Tips library.
- Keep up the great work!

Minnecologies has done an incredible amount of work on Outline of forestry and posted a note to me on my talk page requesting feedback.
I've posted my observations at Talk:Outline of forestry#Finished outline review.
Please take a look at the outline and let Minnecologies know what you think of it on the outline's talk page.
Thank you.

OOK's highest priority task - here's a piece of it for you
Nuke,
The government branches sections are in error on many of the country outlines.
Since those are in article space, we need to fix those ASAP! This is our most important task right now.
Here's a list of links that goes right to that section: User:The Transhumanist/List of country outline government sections.

A quick review
Per your request, I'm finally getting around to doing that review you asked for.
- Your CSD work is great. So far I haven't seen any issues... usually I see something, but so far nadda concern.
- What is the deal with the two blocks on your record? One looks like it was a mistake, but I can't find anything about the one in April?
- Your talk page looks good.
Now here is the problem, I've never been a good judge at evaluating people I consider to be wiki-friends. I do a piss poor job at it. I have a particularly hard time when that wiki-friend has failed an RfA... I think you've addressed most of the concerns from that RfA and the seven month wait was a good thing. As for your chances... I don't know... I'm always afraid I've missed the elephant in the living room when looking at friends (because that is what I tend to do with people I know.)---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 05:48, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- Well, thank you for your review, Balloonman. You asked about the block - the April one has an interesting story. I had an important competition the few days around April 25, and I really needed to study. I locked myself out of my Wikipedia account via a Wikibreak enforcer, but as I was studying later that evening, I remembered this one prod that I had placed, but which might have not stuck. I ran over to my computer, bypassed the Wikibreak enforcer, and viewed the article's history, and sure enough, it hadn't. I logged on to IRC, and grabbed the first one of my administrator friends that I saw - DragonflySixtyseven. I asked him if he could file an AfD for me. I can't remember if he did or not, but he also recognized the fact that I really didn't need to be wasting my time with Wikipedia when I had such more important matters to worry about. Though we both knew that self-asked-for blocks are usually not done, he suggested that we bend those rules a little bit. I don't fault him at all for that block.
- Ah, the elephant in the room. What is that elephant? I really don't know either, but I am sure that it has to exist, which is actually why I sought you out in the first place. You said "I think you've addressed most of the concerns from that RfA"; what about the concerns that I didn't address. What do you think those are? NW (Talk) 13:06, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- The issues surrounding IRC are hard for me to evaluate because I'm not on IRC... and maturity is a hard one to guage. Once that label is applied, it is hard to shake. Six months is probably the minimum length of time to get rid of that---and you've waited six months. But it is the most difficult thing for me to evaluate among a person I consider a wiki-friend. There were also some concerns about deception/honesty... namely in your article contributions. I think you worked to actually have some solid article building under your belt this time around.---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 13:22, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Adoptee's due diligence
Hi, you may wish to discuss with your adoptee logger9 their wish to protect their identity, about which they expressed a need for understanding."if this becomes a serious issue, then I will imimediately[sic] remove my name from [his website]. But I will need to understand a bit more about the issues here before I act."[3]. I was correctly reminded that WP:OUTING is policy, and therefore a serious issue, within Wikipedia. I don't think that restricts anything logger9 puts on the Internet otherwise. But even with the protection of the policy an editor wishing anonymity must exercise due diligence about what they post. True anonymity requires that nothing about the user's actual identity is linkable or inferable from any information posted under the pseudonym.[4]. It is recommended that one use utmost caution and discretion when revealing information that could be used to personally identify one. It seems that logger9 has been so incautious as to A) post his real name prominently in image captions in an article mainspace, B) name on his Talk page his website that identifies him as its author and C) state by name a 3rd person and when they met, and D) state his employment title. An option for logger9 can be to re-register with a new pseudonym and to take more care that its real identity does not become a bell that is difficult to un-ring. - Because it is a sensitive issue, I will follow up with him by email. But thank you for alerting me to this. NW (Talk) 12:56, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Jinni move
Hi, I saw that you moved Jinni (discovery service) to Jinni (search engine). I think it's more accurate to describe it as "discovery" because the service includes both a search engine and a recommendation engine. What do you think about switching it back? (I'll wait for your response.) Thanks! Penelopepope (talk) 11:12, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- I did it more on the basis of Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names); Jinny discovery service gets only about 4000 hits on Google, whereas Jinny search engine gets five times that amount. I figure it is better to call it what more people refer to it as. NW (Talk) 15:30, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for explaining, that makes sense. Penelopepope (talk) 12:31, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

- No worries about the lateness; I wasn't expecting anything anyway :) Feel free to ask if you ever need help again! NW (Talk) 02:33, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
You were right
Remember that fight you broke up? You were right, I shouldn't have argued in that way. Karma collected today. :(
I'm exhausted.

- Ouch.
- Any links? NW (Talk) 03:10, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Per feedback, the image you reviewed now illustrates the biography of the artist and a different image illustrates the History of Jamaica article. You may wish to change your review based upon these alterations. Durova273 19:13, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Ha! Re: [5], you beat me to it. If you look at earlier versions you'll see why I used the template I did--that is, I hope I had picked the right one. Drmies (talk) 00:45, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
- No problem. And let's see: Although this tagging was technically correct, I really might have instead monitored this for a bit longer before tagging it. There is a general unwritten rule that A1 or A3 taggings should not be done for the first little while after the article is created. I would advise that in the future, you keep the page on a tab and coming back to it in half an hour or so before tagging. If you don't understand why (it isn't exactly obvious why at first thought), feel free to ask me to explain a bit more. NW (Talk) 00:51, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
- OK. It was actually the first time that I used that one. Obviously, I hadn't read that unwritten rule! And I guess I can see why it exists--out of consideration to (new) editors, I imagine. It's just that I don't write articles that way, one sentence at a time. Thanks for your explanation, Drmies (talk) 02:15, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
- I too usually write my (few) articles in my userspace first, but since the people that the CSD tags apples to are newbies, they won't really be used to that custom. And no problem. Feel free to come back to me for advice at any time; I will always be happy to help. NW (Talk) 02:18, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Outline Update - Exhausted - 07/10/2009
I'm sorry that I haven't been available to assign tasks lately. For the past 3 days (not including today) I've been almost totally consumed in discussions concerning the location and very existence of outlines. Today I finally broke free and got back to work on outlines. Felt good.
A great deal has been happening with outlines and behind the scenes. I just don't have time to tell you all about it this time around. Here's the best I can do...
- How to watch what's going on with outlines
If you'd like a bird's eye view of everything that's happening with respect to outlines, see this page:
- WP:OOKWL - watchlist for copying and pasting into your raw watchlist.
Or go to these pages (and click on "Related changes" in the sidebar's toolbox menu):
- WP:OOKRC - a version of the above watchlist for use with "Related changes".
- WP:OOKDIR - a list of key pages related to the OOK, along with their shortcuts.
- WP:OOKDISC - list of discussions pertaining to outlines.
- Recently converted to outlines
These outline articles, which were named "List of...", have been converted to an OOK format:
- Outline of martial arts (was "List of martial arts-related topics")
- Outline of wine - converted by Stefan (was called "List of wine-related topics")
- Outline of the creation-evolution controversy (was "List of topics in the creation-evolution controversy")
- Outline of actuarial science (was "Actuarial topics")
- Outline of industrial organization (was "List of topics in industrial organization")
- Recently merged into outlines
There are a lot of "List of" articles that are outlines. Some of them are on the same subjects as the "Outline of" articles. The following one have been recently merged:

- Woah! That's certainly a lot of pages we have under our banner. I have added them to my public sockpuppet's watchlist; I will definitely check that every few days. NW (Talk) 01:40, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Image issue
The problem with that photo File:Xenomorph Facehugger egg.jpg is that the website I got it from no longer has it up. and that's the only place I could find that photo. How am I supposed to use it now?

- Use http://archive.org. (X! · talk) · @004 · 23:05, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
- X! is correct here. In addition, if you got it from a website, it seems unlikely that you also created the image (in which case you would just have access to the image), so I have removed that notice from the image. Please correct me if I made a mistake. NW (Talk) 23:48, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Can you help me resolve the photo issue? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Letsgetit136 (talk • contribs) 20:36, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
- Per our Non-free content criteria, we do not allow the use of fair use images where it is quite possible that a free use image could be reasonably procured. The only thing to do here is to try to see if you might possibly be able to procure some free use images, either from asking people at Flickr or maybe even taking a picture yourself if you live close enough to him. Nuclear--I'm at a loss to understand why the bot tagged the ogg files I put on this article and why you removed them. The thing is, I have been placing ogg files on Willy DeVille album articles, and I have never been flagged by the bot before. For example, see Willy DeVille Live and Backstreets of Desire. You can find plenty of A-OK ogg files on those articles. I uploaded the oggs to "Big Easy Fantasy" the same way as I did those other articles. Why were they flagged here and not there? SpanishStroll (talk) 00:02, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
- The reason why I removed these images was for compliance with our Non-free content policy. Per that policy, fair use content may only be used if there is substantial amount of explanation within the article as to why the fair use content is necessary for analysis of the topic. For example, see Thriller_(album)#Music. Though Thriller has over a dozen songs, only three pieces of fair use music is used, and each one has a paragraph dedicated to analysis of that particular song. You may wish to read up on our non-free content criteria. IF you would like my to explain further, please ask. NW (Talk) 00:11, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
File permission problem with File:Giorgi-1.jpg and File:Giorgi-2.jpg
Thanks for sending me these notices with what appears to be helpful guidance on how I can resolve the copyright issues regarding photos that I feel are quite important for the Wikipedia article on Giorgi Latsabidze that I am working on (see [[6]]. It seemed to me that my best approach was to send an e-mail to permissions-en@wikimedia.org with the attachment of the files that provide the necessary permissions. These are in the form of document files that contain the permission letters that were originally sent to me. I sent the e-mail on Sunday, and am becoming concerned that I still have not received a reply and that I will not be able to include these photos in my article. Is the problem that I didn't simply "forward" the e-mail to me that originally contained these attachments? (The e-mail contained other irrelevant contents.) That seems like a minor difference to me, but what do I know? If it would be helpful, I would be happy to forward to you the e-mail that I sent on Sunday to permissions... Thank you for any further guidance that you could provide. Music43lover (talk) 01:38, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
- Do you think you could forward me that email? (email is on my userpage) I know several people who work with OTRS, and I can ask their opinion to see if there is anything else you need to do or if your email was sufficient. For now, I will mark your images with {{OTRS pending}}, which will allow it to be kept until someone comes to look it over. NW (Talk) 01:44, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Thx 4 ur reminding
- So wt should I do if I want to tell the administator that CCTVB(redirect page) should be deleted(WP:NPOV vio.)?
(I'm sorry 4 my poor english. ) --Gordongordon999 (talk) 04:46, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- CCTVB is not a correct short form of TVB.Some of the people in Hong Kong call it "CCTVB" because they think that TVB has been controlled by the communist(CCTV).(U may read the article CCTVBin EVCHK 4 more information.)--Gordongordon999 (talk) 05:00, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
