GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

... for improving article quality in December! There's a peer review open for Clara Schumann and a FAC for Jauchzet, frohlocket!, DYK? We miss Brian who would have helped. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:14, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Oh, wow! Sorry, I just noticed this. Thank you for the kind message! 2019's been a lot more chaotic for me than I anticipated, and I haven't edited nearly as much as I initially wanted to. This year, it's been both a blessing and a curse that I have some wonderfully talented students that keep impressing me with each essay that I assign to them. I'm hoping to have more time to edit in the new year, but then again... I keep saying that each new year.   OhKayeSierra (talk) 11:43, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Happy Holidays

@DBigXray: Thank you for the kind greeting! Hope you had a wonderful holiday and have an equally great new year! I think, for my resolution, I'm going to want to manage my time better so that I stop editing so sporadically.   Cheers! OhKayeSierra (talk) 11:39, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Thx, As for me, 2019 brought several successful collaborations. I hope the new year will allow me to have even more collaborations and a chance to get to know more amazing people around the world like you.--Happy Holidays! ᗙ DBigXray 11:43, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – January 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Your Message: "January 2020"

Hi,

I am writing in response to your message on my talk page. Thank you for the heads-up! No, it is not a paid/affiliated update. But I will be careful from onward. If there is anything wrong with the edits, let me know, I will be happy to edit/delete. I am relatively new here and I really appreciate your help!

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alicia.Rother (talkcontribs) 13:10, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

@Alicia.Rother: No worries, and thanks for clarifying. What caught my attention was how similar the edits were from a few months ago from when I first copy-edited the article due to a conflict-of-interest and an undisclosed paid editor. Since you claimed that you're unaffiliated with Death Wish, I'll assume good faith and take you at your word for that, although I may copyedit the article again for neutral word choice. Cheers! OhKayeSierra (talk) 01:14, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! :) Is it okay if I continue to edit other pages? I won't edit this one anymore just to be sure not to get mixed up into something unwanted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alicia.Rother (talkcontribs) 09:55, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
@Alicia.Rother: Sure! Feel free to edit any pages that you'd like, including Death Wish Coffee! I hope that my message didn't discourage you from editing at any point. If so, I sincerely apologize. I was only trying to determine if you had an affiliation with the company or not. We've had issues with companies (including DW, unfortunately) using undeclared paid editors and PR departments to edit their articles. Please feel free to give me a shout if there's any questions that I can answer about editing on Wikipedia. I'd be more than happy to help however I can (although I'm not online too often anymore lately). Happy editing! Also, I formatted your message a bit to keep a cohesive discussion thread. I hope that's ok! OhKayeSierra (talk) 10:23, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

  Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [21]

  Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

A barnstar for you!

  The Special Barnstar
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned this, but congratulations on becoming a mum! Don't worry about sleepless nights, things get better! I love spending time with my kids and doing fun things, even though they're fast approaching adulthood now. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:20, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: Wow! Thank you so much for the kind barnstar and advice! Indeed, some of those sleepless nights have been a challenge without a doubt, but I've been trying to take things one day and one step at a time, but above all else, I consider being a new mom to be a joy. Plus, whenever I do feel sleepless, lately I've been reading random FA's and GA's, not with the intention of editing, but just for the sake of reading another editor's work and (hopefully) learning something new. It's helpful to take a step back and remind myself that everyone's work on the project matters for the readers. OhKayeSierra (talk) 01:20, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Potential adminship

It certainly couldn't hurt to try! But there'll be absolutely no hard feelings if the ultimate decision is against. Thanks for your consideration. Katharineamy (talk) 12:14, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

@Katharineamy:   I have read the above message. I will reply when I have a moment. OhKayeSierra (talk) 14:09, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
@Katharineamy: Sorry it took a bit for me to reply back! It's been a bit of a chaotic day. I see that Ritchie333 already touched up on one of the biggest concerns that might be an issue with an RfA, which would be the lack of content creation. I'm a WikiGnome as well, and much more so lately due to time constraints, so I have a much more laid back approach to determining acceptable administrators than many others that regularly post at WP:RFA. But the community has historically been funny about users vying for adminship without content background. I do see that you signed up for Women in Red, which is commendable. They certainly need all the help that they can get. I'd suggest getting some more experience in article writing, either with them if that's where your interests lie, or in any other WikiProject that interests you! I'll also note that there's a lot of ways that you can contribute without being an administrator, and that it's really not necessary to excel in wherever you prefer contributing. Actually, in many respects, it becomes more of a hassle for many who would've preferred to stick to what they know instead of constantly dealing with problems on the site. Wikipedia:I don't want to be an administrator actually sums it up really well. So, unfortunately, I don't think you're quite ready to pass an RfA quite yet. My offer will still stand to consider co-nominating you in the future, but I'd hate to put you through an RfA if I wasn't sure that you could pass it. I'd suggest reading Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates and getting some more content experience in, if you're still truly interesting in vying for the mop. OhKayeSierra (talk) 00:04, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
No worries at all! I'll see how things go for the time being, and I hope all's going well with the baby! Katharineamy (talk) 17:05, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

16:17, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

thank you

I really appreciate the warm welcome, it's helps as when your new, Wikipedia is really overwhelming. Thanks (ps i would like to have an account but I can't for reasons I would rather not share thanks for understanding, and can you hand out barnstars and wikilove as an IP? ) 71.193.145.97 (talk) 05:27, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Burma-shave

Well done with the battleground Burma-Shave! I'm glad to see someone other than the usual troublemakers using it. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 13:36, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Creffett/Creffpublic Thanks! I love seeing them on the Drama Boards, and I was hoping that it would help diffuse the conflict. I'd like to think that my little poem was pretty ok for typing it with one hand while sleep-deprived at an ungodly hour in the morning with a screaming infant in my other arm. Haha The real thanks is owed to Guy for being the Godfather of Burma-Shave jokes. OhKayeSierra (talk) 14:27, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
