Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2020.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Reidgreg took a break after serving for a couple years. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Progress report: As of 01:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 532 requests since 1 January and there were 38 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Puddleglum2.0, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Closing rename of "Missionaries (LDS Church)"

Before I start a move review for renaming Missionaries (LDS Church) to Mormon missionaries, I wanted to give you a change to rethink your closure of it. At the time of closure, sure there was a numerical majority of "support" !votes, but "oppose" !votes were still trickling in, and the last few comments were all "oppose". Why not "Missionary (Mormon)", or "Missionary (LDS)", or (taking a cue from the referring link Missionary) "Missionary Program (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)"? Or why not leave it as it was, but clean up the tone of the lede? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.89.100.135 (talk) 18:58, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

I have read the above message. I will reply when I have a moment. OhKayeSierra (talk) 19:22, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
When I had closed the RM, it had been open for well over a month and relisted twice, and at that point, I believed that there was a rough consensus in favor of the move, which I stated in my rationale. The fact that "oppose !votes were still trickling in" is immaterial. After re-reading the RM, I still believe that there was sufficient consensus for this page to be moved and stand by my closure. You are, of course, more than welcome to start a move review if you still believe that my closure was in error. I intend to be offline for a few hours, though, so it may take a bit before I'm able to comment on it when you do. OhKayeSierra (talk) 19:49, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Discretion (the freedom to decide what should be done in a particular situation.)

Oh ok so the editors have decided that Fowler&Fowler map is more appropraie than mine is it? Even though I dont know wat the reason? FowlerFowler said it is because that map is smal but the sane map is used in bhutan and other countries thats not a objective reason, hope you reply! Also does discretion sanction means administrators have already decided that the map should be changed?

Swtadi143 (talk) 02:19, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

@Swtadi143: I haven't gone through your contributions thoroughly yet, so I'm unfamiliar with the dispute that you're referencing. As a matter of fact, the first two lines at the top of the discretionary sanctions template on your talk page say This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date. The only reason that I messaged you with it is because of your high involvement in that topic area from your past contributions. Because you've now been informed, by the rules governing discretionary sanctions as well as the arbitration committee decision that caused discretionary sanctions to be authorized for the topic, you are now fully responsible for being aware of and following any restrictions that may be placed on an article under the sanctions. Because you are now fully accountable for following the sanctions (now that you've been made aware of them), you may also be placed under editing restrictions to enforce the sanctions if an administrator deems it necessary.
With all of that said, I strongly urge you to read through WP:ACDS and ensure that you're carefully following the policy to avoid potential issues. OhKayeSierra (talk) 07:59, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi OhKayeSierra. You left a not on my talk page. I included information, that are obvious and the source already existed. If you would have looked at his YouTube channel, you could see, that the new vlog series started (Should I add the link of the first new video of this series?) and the podcast stopped over a year ago alredy. Hi. I wrote you on your talk page, becouse you sad, I should do so, if there is a problem and then you don´t answer and delete it from your talk page. Thats not okay. --Karo Fünf (talk) 20:37, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

@Karo Fünf: I apologize for that. Things have been incredibly chaotic for me lately, so my time on the project has been limited at best. I had originally typed a reply, but must've forgotten to save the edit before my archival bot had archived the thread. At any rate, I had reverted your edit because a reliable source had not been added for your edit. Verifiability is a policy that's taken seriously on Wikipedia, and that's especially true for Biographies of Living Persons. If there is an independently published source to go along with your edits, feel free to include it in the article. OhKayeSierra (talk) 17:47, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
