Article assistance
editHey there, and thank you again for coming to the Teahouse! Here's what I'm thinking will be the best course of action for you. The name of the article needs to be simplified to just the regular given name of the person ... in this case, Maurice Carpenter. I did a quick search and there are no other articles about notable individuals with that name, so the move would be pretty simple. If there was another Maurice Carpenter, we could still move it, but we'd need to add a "disambiguation" term, such as "Maurice Carpenter (producer)".
Now, here's where the fun begins. This individual appears to go by two other names, either as Moe Carpenter or as The Inkredibles, meaning that people might search Wikipedia using those names and not his given names, right? --McDoobAU93 19:49, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Correct. Thank you so much for this help! Luckyleftyllc (talk) 19:51, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Also, how do I change the name of the article? Luckyleftyllc (talk) 19:52, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- This is pretty complex for a newcomer, so I can make these changes for you, if you'd like. But of course, I'll tell you how and why I'm doing them, so you can do them in the future. In order to rename the article, we must move it. Now, moving is not something done on a whim; sometimes you have to discuss it with fellow editors to avoid controversy. However, since this is a new article and you're the major contributor, this shouldn't be a problem in that regard. I'm going to move the article to Maurice Carpenter. Right now it'll appear red, meaning there isn't an article with that name (yet). I'll wait for you to respond to this, so you can see what I mean, then I'll make the move. Ready? :) --McDoobAU93 19:57, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Alllll ready! *straps on seatbelt* Luckyleftyllc (talk) 19:59, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Done! Take a peek via the newly blue link!
- Now, here's how I did it. Near the top of the page, you should see a "Move" link. You can click that and it will take you to a new page that shows you the current name and provides a space for you to enter the new name, along with posting a reason for the move. That reason will appear like an edit summary in what's called the "move log", which shows all page moves that have occurred on Wikipedia. You can see the log here; I moved the article at 20:00 UTC precisely (not intentionally, but still cool timing), so if other articles are moved by the time you see it, you'll find it. --McDoobAU93 20:04, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Great! Now we do the redirects? Luckyleftyllc (talk) 20:09, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Should we have named it "Maurice Carpenter (Producer) or something? or will this be fine you think? Luckyleftyllc (talk) 20:10, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm proposing two redirects: one for Moe Carpenter and one for The Inkredibles. That should help people find the article. If there was another Maurice Carpenter--such as an actor or politician--then we'd need to add (producer), but since he's the only one, it's not necessary yet. If we go with those two, you'll see the links above in red for now, but again they'll go blue after I create the redirects.
At the same time, I also do need to bring your attention to another concern I have about this article. In the lead, there is mentioned a company whose name matches that of your username. That raises the possibility that you might have a conflict-of-interest in editing this article. Articles should be neutral and not promotional, and the article could use some work to tone down the promotional tone of it. I believe there's enough info to establish notability of Mr. Carpenter (despite what people think, not everyone gets a Grammy nod), but there should be more sources added to do just that.
--McDoobAU93 20:16, 5 March 2012 (UTC
Even if I chose the username because I'm a fan? Kind of how a Justin Beiber fan may put "JustinBiebergirl" or something? What would you suggest I do as far as the username? Also, what would you suggest I change in the article to tone it down? I am very open to your suggestions as this is my first article. Luckyleftyllc (talk) 20:21, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- One more thing, because there were other members of "The Inkredibles" at one time, I'm thinking we maybe shouldnt do a redirect from "The Inkredibles". I'm afraid it may cause some issues. What do you think?
- That's a very valid question, and one I'm not sure I have an immediate answer for. You might want to post a separate question about that on the Teahouse and get some other input. Realizing there may be an issue should help get some positive suggestions (again, that's the point of the Teahouse, to help and not to snap at new users). I've got some things I need to take care of today, but I will be back online later and will help with the redirects.
- In the meantime, here's some "homework" for the article. If I were you, I would research major music websites for articles on Mr. Carpenter, his work with the various acts listed in the infobox, reviews of the albums/tracks he produced, etc. This should not include fan-sites, fan-run blogs or forum posts. This will give the article more information and more sources to indicate that he is notable and thus should have an article here. As to the language, I would tone down the use of adjectives; for example, "a powerful partnership" should just be "a partnership". You'll also need to take a closer look at the article for Lee Major, apparently another part of The Inkredibles to make sure that (a) you're not duplicating things word-for-word and (b) they may have sources there that help link the two and further establish Carpenter's notability.
- Is there anyway we can make The Inkredibles page redirect to both Maurice Carpenter and Lee Major's pages? Luckyleftyllc (talk) 00:29, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
- No there isn't ... redirects are designed to point to one location only. The other option is to create a page for The Inkredibles and combine the info from both people there into a single article, unless there is significant information for each one that needs to be presented in a separate article. For this, The Inkredibles would be the main article, with subheadings for both Lee Major and for Maurice Carpenter ... at least at first. Again, if either one has a lot of contributions separate from the pairing, then it may need to remain separated. --McDoobAU93 00:39, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
