Welcome!

edit

Hello, GeorgetownPrepWiki, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Hi - I'm Girth Summit, an administrator here. Please note the following:
  • The username you have selected is not compatible with our username policy. You will need to select a new one - the instructions can be found at WP:UGC.
  • You have a conflict of interest with regards to the school; if you are an employee of the school, you need to comply with the guidance at WP:PAID, which forms part of the terms of use of this website. You should not be editing the page about the school directly, but should propose changes on its talk page; you may use edit requests to help with this.
Thank you. Girth Summit (blether) 19:35, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for COI/promotional editing., as you did at Georgetown Preparatory School.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Girth Summit (blether) 20:06, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I already explained that you have a conflict of interest with that article, and that you should not be editing it directly. I also drew your attention to the paid editing policy, which forms part of the terms of se of this website. You disregarded all of that, and inserted straight-up advertising copy written in the first person (this edit). Since you were unwilling to listen to advice, or to ask questions to find out what you needed to do next, I have blocked your account indefinitely. Request reason:

I feel that the block is no longer necessary because I understand why I was blocked and will not do it again. I am new on wikipedia and now understand how to make productive contributions PALcreates25 (talk) 19:57, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

I am declining your unblock request because it does not address the reason for your block, or because it is inadequate for other reasons. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that

  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    1. understand what you have been blocked for,
    2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    3. will make useful contributions instead.

Please read the guide to appealing blocks for more information. Yamla (talk) 20:15, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

I read through the Guide and understand that the material I dropped in was promotional. I work at Georgetown Prep and was trying to update Wikipedia. I am not being paid to update Wikipedia, but one of my tasks is to manage all online accounts. Wikipedia was very outdated. I helped update facts like the tuition, new logo, enrollment and athletics - which Wikipedia accepted. Some of the info I drop in I now see as promotional. I understand it needs to be very fact based, and not sourced the www.gprep.org website. I have changed my username so it does not look like Georgetown Prep. I will not disrupt the wiki page again, but would like to add more contributions like academic accomplishments and service. I understand the guidelines now and will follow the rules. thank you. Accept reason:

Do you agree not to edit the page itself, but to make edit requests on the article talk page (and to disclose your COI when you do so)? And also to abide by the instructions at WP:COI and WP:PAID? Do you also understand that your school has no ownership over the article, and no editorial control over what goes in and what gets left out? Girth Summit (blether) 21:25, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I agree to make edit requests in the article. I will also address any COI. I will abide by the instructions at WP:COI and WP:PAID. I understand that my school has no ownership over the article, and no editorial control over the content. PALcreates25 (talk) 21:33, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
OK, subject to you abiding by that agreement, I'm going to unblock your account, but I'm going to leave a partial block in place that will prevent you from editing the article directly. You will be able to use the talk page to make edit requests, and also to edit other articles. Please make the necessary paid editing declaration on your user page. (The instructions are in the guideline.) Girth Summit (blether) 21:58, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I am not paid directly by the school for Wikipedia edits. I work for the school and have many obligations in the Communications Department. This editing task was a small task to do or my many job requirements. I did not get paid directly to do these edits. Do I still need to make a paid editing declaration? PALcreates25 (talk) 23:24, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes. I appreciate that you're not paid exclusively to edit Wikipedia, but if it is something you're doing as part of your job then you are paid to do it, and you need to abide by WP:PAID. That policy actually goes beyond our regular behavioural policies, it's part of the Terms of Use of this website, which you agree to abide by whenever you click the 'Publish changes' button. FWIW, I also work for a school (I'm a teacher). I do not have a COI/PAID disclosure on my user page, because I have never edited our article about my employer, and I will never do so. If you are writing about your employer, you must disclose that; if you're doing it as a hobby in your own time, it's a COI disclosure, but if you're doing it as part of your job, it's a PAID disclosure.
