Hospitalized for Wikistress!!!!!
I am suffering from wikiburnout and chronic Wikistress.

And real life is very much in the way these days.
I probably won't be able to log in as frequently and contribute as much as I would like. Messages left here probably won't get a quick response as before. Your patience would be very much appreciated.

Take care, everyone.
Happy editing.

edit

Thanks for the DYK medal, PFH. I didn't even know there was a DYK Hall of Fame until you pointed it out :) Who's been keeping track of my DYK's? That was very nice of them.

However, whoever it was, I think they have made a slight error, because according to my count, I already have 51 DYK's (50 self noms + 1 other nom), not 49 :) Gatoclass (talk) 01:31, 14 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Papal conclave 1667

edit

I've added some in-text citations to my article Papal conclave, 1667. However, I left you to judge whether it's sufficient to remove the box "morefootnotes". The primary source for this article is the book of Valerie Pirie, "The Triple Cropwn: An account of the Papal Conclaves", which is available online. The list of patricipants and the informations about them are according to informations on the website The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church by Salvador Miranda. CarlosPn (talk) February 19, 2008 20:54 (CET) —Preceding comment was added at 20:03, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, CarlosPn. Thank you for your note and your quick referencing. I've removed the {{morefootnotes}} tag from the article. I'd suggest adding an actual reference for footnote #1, as the wikiarticle Papal conclave, 1621 does not exist yet. That article will need its own references, too, when it comes into existence. The same ref can be used in this article, right? Happy editing. :-) --PFHLai (talk) 05:42, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW, I've nominated this article for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on February 18, where you can improve it if you see fit. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 06:18, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's wrong with it? Gatoclass (talk) 11:41, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I've a problem with the hook.
The cited reference says "Her company is said to control 20 per cent of construction in the booming capital..." I don't think all constructions are "new buildings". Also, the owner being "Russia's richest woman" is not ref'ed in the article. --PFHLai (talk) 11:43, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Robert Oxnam on DYK

edit

Hello PFHLai. I don't want to publicize Oxnam's illness on Wikipedia's MainPage. I think the hook "...that Robert Oxnam, author of a bestselling memoir describing his dissociative identity disorder, was president of the Asia Society for over a decade?" would be better. English is my second language. Although I am comfortable with the language, sometimes I can sound rude. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 09:45, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Masterpiece2000. Yes, I like the new hook by jnestorius. I just don't think it's right to post a line on Wikipedia's MainPage saying "Oxnam... is mentally ill" without any context. If the hook says Oxnam himself wrote and published a book about his mental illness, it's alright. Take care. --PFHLai (talk) 14:44, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Avinesh Jose. Wikipedia:Recent additions was not updated properly. I'll fix it up soon. Your 'Chelembra Bank Robbery' article was indeed on MainPage late yesterday and earlier today. Please try this link. Hope this helps. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 04:57, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

McCain & Buffett

edit

Any particular reason you had to change the McCain blurb? I don't think the change sounds very encyclopedic. -- Grant.Alpaugh 15:42, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... I thought it's relevant and interesting. It was also a failed attempt to replace on MainPage the protected President of the United States page with one that I thought more contributors can edit. I didn't know that the United States presidential election, 2008 page was also protected, but not tagged with {{sprotected}}. Oh, well... --PFHLai (talk) 23:25, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
So are you going to revert it then, cause that's not the language we agreed upon at ITN/C. In the future if you could try to refrain from drive-by editing ITN without taking into consideration what has been said there, we'd all appreciate it. -- Grant.Alpaugh 03:18, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm... Wording came up at ITN/C is not really etched in stones, and to not make changes afterwards is rather un-wiki. I have been editing ITN since 2004, and I see no reason to stop. I can revert or make further changes on ITN, but I (or any admin at WP:ERRORS) need to be persuaded that the current line has a problem. I do think my line is slightly more informative, so I'll leave things as is for now. --PFHLai (talk) 16:32, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Also, please add the Warren Buffett blurb we've agreed upon. That would be great. -- Grant.Alpaugh 03:19, 8 March 2008 (UTC
I'll pass on the Buffett blurb. I find the whole thing too tabloid-ish. --PFHLai (talk) 16:19, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree with you, but we're trying to increase the turnover on ITN and it is interesting. Either way, consensus is clear, please add it. -- Grant.Alpaugh 22:24, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you really want sth new on ITN, try working on the Maltese & Malaysian elections and the Serbia-Kosovo political crisis. --PFHLai (talk) 05:35, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just for the record, I have no problem with you editing ITN, I just have a problem with anyone editing ITN that ignores consensus reached on ITN/C or refuses to look there at all. I just want this to take place in as much of a wikifashion as possible. -- Grant.Alpaugh 09:29, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I hope this doesn't mean taking ownership of the first good version of an ITN headline you and your colleagues at ITN/C came up with. People will revise and revise on their whim. It's a wiki afterall. --PFHLai (talk) 17:47, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

edit

I saw your request. Please note that everything on MainPage is fully protected to avoid vandalism. (See Wikipedia:Editing the main page.) If you don't want your wording to be mercilessly edited and revised after it's posted on ITN, you may want to bring this up at Template talk:In the news. --PFHLai (talk) 17:17, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I understand that, but there are several editors that are infinitely qualified to act as stewards of the template than the drive-by admins in charge now. It's an issue of ITN/C being completely ignored by the majority of those that actually edit ITN. There's no reason why a small number of regulars couldn't be able to edit ITN without a problem. -- Grant.Alpaugh 19:28, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I know. ITN/C needs admin attention. I used to be the regular admin at ITN/C. But I've burnt out.... I like your enthusiasm, but getting non-admins to edit MainPage is not going to happen. Anyone with admin-editing privileges can edit ITN. If you want policy changes, you start talking and getting you and your few good men organized at Template talk:In the news. --PFHLai (talk) 21:00, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Right but allowing just any admin to edit ITN is just as much a non-starter. There has to be a way to make this process more satisfactory for the people who actually care about ITN. -- Grant.Alpaugh 22:21, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you have ideas on how to run ITN better, please be encouraged to propose them at the ITN talk page. But I don't think we can restrict the editing in ITN (or any wikipage) to just a small group of contributors. This would go against the WP principle that "anyone can edit". (Anyone can become an admin, too. One just has to earn the trust of enough fellow Wikipedians for an RfA.) ... Things are not perfect now, but at least we don't get porno pics on ITN every other day. --PFHLai (talk) 05:47, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for helping us out, I apologize if I came off as a dick earlier. It's just really frustrating when you and a few other people are really dedicated to making something work, but are completely reliant on other people to put it into action. Anyway, thanks again. -- Grant.Alpaugh 09:26, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. No, you weren't a dick at all. But you seem rather frustrated. I suggest taking it easy, Grant.Alpaugh. Relax. It's supposed to be fun editing in the wiki. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 17:47, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

2003 Insight Bowl DYK

edit

Thanks, but the only input I had into the article was selecting the hook that got in, and referencing it. From what I know about the DYK process, that doesn't qualify for a DYK banner. That credit goes to JKBrooks85. I'll remove the banner from my talk page myself.  :) — Dale Arnett (talk) 13:26, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note, Dale Arnett.
Yeah, I thought something was wrong when I saw this at DYKNU. I had given the DYK banner to JKBrooks85, and then I gave you a banner, too, just in case someone really wanted you to have one. Go ahead and remove it if you really don't want it. I've no problem with that. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 18:14, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good evening, my dear Mr Lai. Thank-you for amending my submission; I did not realise that 'Fair use' pictures (whatever they may be) could not be used. I thank you for enlightening me. Tell me, are you one of the little people? One assumes so, judging by the size of your writing and the date being what it is.

Actually, I'm one of these little people. Happy St. Patrick's Day!  :-) --PFHLai (talk) 22:45, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ah, a clerk, just like Bob Cratchit, one assumes. Do you have the most wonderful copperplate script, and do you sit on a high stool at a desk scratching in a huge dusty ledger? Well, jolly well done you, I say. The world needs more selfless minions like you, so that the great and the good (such as myself) can go about our gracious business unimpeded. The next time you need a pay rise, Mr Lai, just let me know and I shall have a word with your boss. I know he is resistant to such things, but I am sure I can manage an extra 6d. a week for you. And now I must bid you a good evening, Mr Lai.

Etta Palm article

edit

You added a "more notes"-tag to Etta Palm d'Aelders before you left town. I explained in the references for that article that most facts are taken from *Gérald Arboit, « SOUVENT FEMME VARIE » UNE ESPIONNE HOLLANDAISE À PARIS..., and that this online article does not have page numbers, so it is difficult to provide inline refs. I have however given a complete quote from Arboit as a citation for the claim that Marat frequented her salon. Arboit is a reputable French historian (you may want to google him), and the article (which I used as an external link)looks solid (except for the mistakes about the arrest record at he end, for which I have given a better citation). So I think your tag is superfluous and since you seem to be indefinitely offline, I have removed it.--Ereunetes (talk) 20:07, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm still around, Ereunetes, even though I shouldn't be.... Anyway, the request for more footnotes was made for DYK purposes -- footnotes are required for the nomination. Thank you for the note about the removal of the tag. It's alright. The article is fine as is. Thanks. -- PFHLai (talk) 22:03, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

ISS crew images

edit

Hi, i noticed that you made a comment on PD-USGov-NASA regarding the cosmonaut crew photos. To be honest, I don't think anyone has a real understanding about the copyright status of these photos. :( The exchange of these photos likely falls under some part of the ISS agreement probably as defined by the "Space Station Multilateral Co-ordination Board" but to actually find those regulations is not easy :( --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 12:07, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, DJ. I know it's hard. Those are good pics. But I think we should avoid using any pictures with a questionable copyright status. And the tag {{PD-USGov-___}} should not be used for those pictures if they are unlikely to be taken by US federal employees as part of their duties. We probably need a new copyright tag for those Russian images. I don't know how, but I hope this will get resolved soon. --PFHLai (talk) 17:55, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

On this day April 17

edit

I disagree with your claim that all of those items are more notable than the Canadian constitutional patriation. At the same time as it formally made Canada independent from Britain, it gave the Canadian courts supremacy over the parliament, which had never been done before in any of the similar parliamentary democracies. An item like the 335 Year War is quirky and interesting, but the patriation has huge historical implications in the field of parliamentary law. This is probably the third most important event in Canadian history, and out of the 366x5 items in On This Day, Canada is surely entitled to at least three events. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 23:01, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Regardless, they are all notable and interesting. It's only for an hour or so, anyway. Feel free to post it back for next year, and replace another 20th century item (too many). (If it's earlier in the day, I'd suggest cycling of those events.) But, please note that when we put things on MainPage, we have to keep in mind:
  1. Do not break the left-right balance on MainPage.
  2. Do not use fairuse pictures.
You did both with this edit. --PFHLai (talk) 23:09, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'll look into those items for nex year. Sorry about the fair use thing, it slipped my mind when making that edit.
