Hospitalized for Wikistress!!!!!
I am suffering from wikiburnout and chronic Wikistress.

And real life is very much in the way these days.
I probably won't be able to log in as frequently and contribute as much as I would like. Messages left here probably won't get a quick response as before. Your patience would be very much appreciated.

Take care, everyone.
Happy editing.

Redwood National and State Parks as TFA on the main page on Arbor Day?

edit

I think it's a great idea but they don't allow more than five proposals at a time on the TFA requests page. Best way to get this date set up is to drop a note at Raul's talk page. Wrad (talk) 17:19, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, right. Somehow I thought the max was 5 noms for each TFA day, rather than 5 max for that request page. It's such a strange rule. Anyway, thanks for letting me know, Wrad. I'll drop Raul a note on his talkpage later on. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 02:13, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

ITN deaths

edit

"restore 2008 Summer Olympics torch relay for MainPage balance. Incoming TFA is quite long." Or you could have promoted the items for Lorenz and Wheeler that have strong consensus for promotion. ;) Madcoverboy (talk) 02:35, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Are you MAD, Coverboy? The ITN death criteria are sacrosanct !!!!! I dare not violate them....  :-)
Seriously, I indeed have looked at the two candidate pages. The relevant new material related to Wheeler's death was a single sentence in his wikibio:

On 2008 April 13, John Wheeler died of pneumonia at the age of 96 in Hightstown, New Jersey.

And ditto for Lorenz's wikibio regarding his death:

On April 16th, 2008, Lorenz died at his home in Cambridge at the age of 90, having suffered from cancer.

No background info about events leading up to the death. No info about the aftermaths or implications. (Typical about natural deaths of old, not so active people.) With so little relevant updating, I can't support their inclusion on ITN, a place on MainPage to showcase well updated articles (not to report news). So, I'll pass. Sorry.
BTW, I don't think there is strong consensus at ITN/C to have the two obituaries on ITN. Support appears fairly conditional with "iff". Instead, we may be closer to having consensus for a revolution at ITN. I'd rather have "Biography of the Day" on MainPage, and have obituaries posted there -- outside ITN! -- at midnight UTC the day after they died. But that's just me... Take care. --PFHLai (talk) 00:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mother Ludlam's Cave at DYK

edit

Hi, I understand it was you who nominated the Mother Ludlam's Cave article for DYK. Many thanks, and hope the stress soon eases. Weydonian (talk) 18:33, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, Weydonian. Your nice new article deserves the spotlight on MainPage. I'm coping with my stress alright. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 11:14, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Main Page balance

edit

Regarding this edit, are you certain that removing it improves main page balance, even after the latest DYK update which is slightly longer than the one preceding it? It doesn't seem that way to me, having checked on both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Perhaps it has to do with our font size difference? --BorgQueen (talk) 00:36, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

On my screen, yes, font size at Larger, Medium & Smaller, IE. I actually removed that line from ITN in anticipation of the DYK update (you almost gave me an edit conflict) If it's really ugly on your screen, please feel free to revert on ITN. I'm signing out soon, so I won't see things stickying out on the rightside on MainPage after your reverting. --PFHLai (talk) 00:44, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see. That's fine, it is not an exact science anyway, and someone else will fix it if something is wrong. (Not that I imply it must be.) Thanks for your work. --BorgQueen (talk) 00:48, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. And thank you for your work, too. :-)
I don't have FireFox, so I didn't check that. Please feel free to fix things as you see fit, Your Majesty. (i can be 'assimilated' quite easily... :-) -PFHLai (talk) 00:53, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
If I may interject, I added a seventh one because there was a gob of space underneath the DYK section, and was still quite a bit after I added it and previewed it. I use Firefox and have a 19"widescreen, if that tells you anything.--Bedford 00:52, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem, Bedford. We are all trying to make MainPage look pretty on our screen, polishing it from different angles.  :-) --PFHLai (talk) 00:57, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, Bedford, do you mean a 7th on Next ? I didn't see the blank space with the MainPage preview that included your 7th. Things are balanced on my screen, but I can't see what you have on Firefox. Please adjust as you see fit on your screen. --PFHLai (talk) 01:07, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I previewed it before it went up, saw a lot of extra space, so I added a seventh entry. Now on my screen, there's a centimeter height difference between the end of the DYKs and the lower "More events:" on the On the Day section.--Bedford 01:17, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
On my screen now, I have "Archive – Start a new article..." at the bottom of DYK a little below "More events: May 3 – May 4 – May 5" but a little higher than "Archive – By email – More anniversaries..." at the bottom of SA/OTD. As the BorgQueen said, "it is not an exact science ..." I'll let things sit and not touch them for now. --PFHLai (talk) 01:25, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The description of the winner is in the intro and in the Full race results. --Lemmey talk 05:50, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I even emptied my cache, and I still can't find any descrptive prose on how Dixon became the winner on that wikipage. --PFHLai (talk) 05:58, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
The descriptive prose is that he ran faster for longer than anyone else, what exactly are you looking for? The Monaco description is completely unsourced and not exactly encyclopedic material. We don't report elections on what states were called in what order, we report the final tallies and post a happy little table. --Lemmey talk 06:01, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm looking for a paragraph or so of descriptive prose to go with the table, e.g. 2007-08 Heineken Cup#Final, or at least some texts like the summaries about the qualifying and earlier trials higher up on the 2008 Indianapolis 500 wikipage. A few words about the "accident" mentioned in the table would be good, too. --PFHLai (talk) 06:11, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK Medal

edit
  The DYK Medal
After the immense amount of hard work you have done at DYK, contributing who knows how many hundreds of DYK noms (another 54 last month alone), I was shocked to see on your user page that no-one has yet thought to award you one of these. So it seems the privilege of handing it over is mine. Nominators like yourself are essential, giving updaters the crucial variety we need to create balanced updates. Great work PFHLai! Gatoclass (talk) 15:22, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for the medal, Gatoclass. I'm glad that my noms are useful in some way. :-) Thank you. You have put in a lot of work at DYK, too. DYK has been running smoothly these days because of dedicated volunteers like you. Your efforts are very much appreciated. --PFHLai (talk) 05:55, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey PFHLai, thanks for the barnstar! I'm really glad to learn that you like my and BanyanTree's changes, because I've always considered you to have an especially valuable opinion and experience on these issues. Battle of Amba Aradam... for DYK

edit

Thank you very much. I fully acknowledge my lack of reference diversity. I am currently working on "fleshing out" the references on Battle of Amba Aradam, First Battle of Tembien, Battle of Shire, Battle of the Ogaden, etc. I really want to add some text to the Second Battle of Tembien first. I think Ras Nasibu needs a write-up as well. And where is the text of the 1928 peace agreement mentioned on the main page? Minor "fixes" to these Wikipedia articles always seem to end up being far deeper than I anticipate. Best Wishes! Mkpumphrey (talk) 12:16, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, Mkpumphrey. Yes, there are lots of things to write about. Glad that someone is filling in the gaps in Wikipedia's coverage. I hope you're enjoying the typing. Minor "fixes" take time, so just do what you can at the moment. You can always come back and type in more. I don't know what 1928 agreement you're referring to, but I'll let you decide what to write and when. Just wanna remind you that new articles are usually featured as DYKs within 5 days of each article's creation date. Usually there's a grace period of an extra day or two, but the admins running DYK don't always wait too long. If you want your nice new articles featured on MainPage as DYKs, please pace yourself accordingly. Happy editing! --PFHLai (talk) 14:30, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sometimes, the context that helps make sense of other sources can only be found in Korean-language sources. In this case, Ryongyon was only created after the Korean War, so although there are English-language sources about parts of the history, they don't mention it by name. I've added an inline citation to a Korean-language encyclopedia article (previously given only as a general reference). Any other requests or suggestions are very welcome. It gives me a good feeling to know that someone was reading "my" article carefully enough to notice an inference needing better referencing! --Amble (talk) 17:54, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your quick response, Amble. I've nominated this article of yours for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on July 10, where you can improve it if you see fit. (Feel free to propose new hooks there.) I hope your Korean ref also supports the founding year as 1884. If it does, please move the footnote a little bit to the right. Thanks. Happy editing. :-) --PFHLai (talk) 21:01, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask

edit

Please refrain modifying the Opentask page as this is done automatically by a bot every three hours and your changes will soon be overwritten. Juniata College was in the stub category several hours ago when the bot was run, but it will be removed from the open tasks list very soon. If you would like to add a transcluded template to the page, allowing you to add your own stubs. Please modify User:AtyndallBot/Opentaskstemplate. This will stop the bot from overwriting your changes. Thankyou. —Atyndall [citation needed] 04:45, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Atyndall, your bot does not seem to be updating Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask properly. Juniata College was added there by you manually 4 weeks ago, and I am not sure how any opentask can stay on the template for so long without being replaced. The 14,788-bytes article wasn't a stub, anyway. Toyota Canada Inc. and Auburn Lull, "stubs" added to the template in the same edit but no one seems to want to work on them, should also be replaced, but I don't have replacements ready. User:AtyndallBot/Opentaskstemplate? I don't know how to handle the "$" there, so I won't touch it now -- I'm supposed to be on wikivacation, anyway. Please keep {{Opentask}} updated and well stocked. Many thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 11:19, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW, if you think Wikipedia:Most wanted stubs is historical, please remove the link from {{Opentask}} and replaced it with something current with actual opentasks. (Or get your bot to get that running again.) Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 11:24, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The bot works by querying the MediaWiki api for the oldest articles in that category. So the idea of the bot is not to repeatedly update the list, but to keep the oldest tasks on that list until they are fixed. Juniata College was in the stub category for the weeks that it was on the list. Perhaps once I have time I could implement a random article selector instead of using that method, but the oldest article method ensures that the articles that have been on the stub list for the longest receive the attention first. —Atyndall [citation needed] 12:49, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I like the idea of selecting older tasks, but I wonder if they are left forgotten for a reason. I think we need to somehow refresh 'Opentask' every now and then, or it will be choke full of tasks that no one wants to work on. --PFHLai (talk) 03:56, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Atyndall, I took out Literary adaptation from the "Stubs" line on {{Opentask}}. I'm not sure why your bot puts it in. It's been 6000 byte long since April 2008 and is not categorised as a stub at all. Very strange. --PFHLai (talk) 03:53, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your bot puts it right back?!?! That article is not a stub. --PFHLai (talk) 04:00, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The article has, at the top, Please help improve this article or section by expanding it. Further information might be found on the talk page or at requests for expansion. (January 2007), it is therefore classified as a stub and placed (its hidden and does not appear in the category list) in the stub category. If you disagree with its stub classification then simply remove that tag and it will be removed from the bot list. I am thinking about being able to place pages in an exclusion category, but until then, nothing can be done. —Atyndall [citation needed] 10:16, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Atyndall, articles tagged Please help improve this article or section by expanding it.... are not necessarily stubs. A stub is an article containing only a few sentences of text which is too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject, but not so short as to provide no useful information. Please see Wikipedia:Stub, and adjust your bot accordingly. It is not putting stubs on the "Stubs" line on {{Opentask}} as one would expect it to. --PFHLai (talk) 15:03, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps your bot can handle the "Expand" line on {{Opentask}}, instead of the "Stubs" line. Maybe a switch for now? Perhaps Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask/Expand can be moved to Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask/Stubs? All the opentasks on the "Expand" line right now are also stubs. --PFHLai (talk) 16:28, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have make some modifications to the code to fix the issue. —Atyndall [citation needed] 12:07, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Looking good, Atyndall. Instead of de-stubbing, the tasks are now stub-sorting. And it works! Thank you for fixing. --PFHLai (talk) 14:32, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

ITN Administrator category

edit

I created the category Category:Wikipedia in the news frequent administrators. As you have experience in ITN and ITN-related matters, I invite you to add your name there. The purpose is so if a non-admin (such as myself) needs an administrator to add, modify, or remove an item, you have experience in this area. Thanks, SpencerT♦C 01:43, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the invite, Spencer, but I'd rather not be the first one in the cat. :-) I'll wait a bit... I'm supposed to be on wikivacation, anyway. --PFHLai (talk) 14:39, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I understand. Thanks for your consideration, SpencerT♦C 00:30, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome, Spencer. BTW, you may want to think about recruiting User: Stephen, User: Aecis, User: Jacoplane, User: Josiah Rowe, User: Centrx, User: David Levy (esp. when you need help with ITN pics), User: The Tom, User: Zocky, User: Zoney, User: Golbez, User: Brian0918, User: youngamerican, User: JForget (esp. when the news is about storms), User: Blood Red Sandman (esp. when the news is about derailments, plane crashes or other disasters), user: Jiang, User: Thue, User: Rje, and User: Monotonehell. Hope this helps.--PFHLai (talk) 20:59, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Spencer, this category of yours was deleted today because it was empty. I have just restored it. If you still want this category around, you may want to step up your recruiting. Good Luck. --PFHLai (talk) 18:12, 4 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's not empty anymore, WBOSITG is in it now. Sorry for not responding: I've been on vacation. I'll keep your suggestions in mind. Thanks again, SpencerT♦C 17:32, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alexandre Banza

edit

Hi,

I noticed you placed a DYK notice on nishkid's talk page for expanding Alexandre Banza but I did not receive one, though I created the original stub which Nishkid expanded. I'd appreaciate notice next time an article I create is on the main page. Thanks--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 13:41, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Thomas.macmillan. You did not receive DYK notice because your name was not on the list of recipients on DYKNU. Upon further review, your name was not even mentioned in the original nomination by Nishkid. I think you were left out because your initiating the article in mid July, though a siginificant contribution, was "more than 5 days ago" and too long ago to qualify for DYK credits. {{UpdatedDYK}} is usually not given out for article creation so long ago. I hope this clarifies things a bit. If you disagree and still want a {{UpdatedDYK}} posted on your usertalkpage, you may want to start a discussion at Wikipedia talk: Did you know. --PFHLai (talk) 14:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Barcol hardness test

edit

I'm concerned about the tweaks to the Barcol hardness test DYK hook here. The army did not develop the test, only requested it, it was developed by an individual company to meet the need, or that's how I read it. I'd just hate to get yelled at for the hook not being properly supported by the source or some such nonsense, other than that it wouldn't bother me. Happy editing. Stardust8212 03:57, 17 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for pointing out the problem, Stardust8212. I was trying to keep the hook short. Is it better now? Please feel free to tweak it further as you see fit. --PFHLai (talk) 04:06, 17 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

2oo?

edit

I was impressed by your timely arrival, and then I felt I had been caught! Oh the excitement of finding that I did indeed have 10 DYKs missing..... but ... I managed to find them. The missing 10 are now in the archive. I'm impressed you checked. Oh and I have an idea for two extra DYK awards. One is the GROSS award that you get for 144 DYKS and the TOO GROSS award that you get for 288 plus. Obviously the latter would be for addicts such as yourself. What do you think? Any idea who could supply some "gross" artwork? Victuallers (talk) 15:13, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Gross? I am not familiar with Gross (unit). I'm more familiar with the use of this word as an adjective, and I doubt anyone would want to supply "gross" materials and call that "artwork" :-) ... Have you looked at your DYK archive between "DYK70 carry 30" and "dyk80 carry 33 21 (derby)"? Anything missing? --PFHLai (talk) 06:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your best wishes. I did sort out one missing "ten DYKs" but hadn't sorted out the other you mentioned when Bedford just gave me it (he was very close himself). I did appreciate that you had kept your eves open and were waiting to send me congrats. Its appreciated. Oh and thanks for the "heads up" on gross. I have two meanings 144 and "disgusting" ... but the latter has a very teenage tinge to it. As you've pointed out these meanings are not international so a "pun" would only work for some and may offend many. Thats the problem with having foreigners involved (That last bit is a (n attempt at a) joke). Cheers Victuallers (talk) 09:02, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, you're welcome. The Holyhead HS nom was indeed your 200th (unless you have more stray DYK banners still missing....)
BTW, you can wikify to specify and clarify. A great gross will always be 1728. I hope to reach that number of noms by the next Olympics.... :-) --PFHLai (talk) 13:46, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Length of DYK hooks

edit

Hi colleague. I've been campaigning for what I call "shorter, sharper hooks" for 2 years and will probably continue to do so. I respect your work on DYK and respectfully understand that other editors will have opinions differing from mine. Please don't take it personally when I identify how I would change hooks you suggest. I'm not implying you do take it personally...I'm only saying this to promote wikilove and all the stuff! We can disagree about this forever and I'll still be happy to work with you. Best wishes and happy editing. - Boston (talk) 23:49, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Boston. Thank you for the msg. I hope you didn't think that I was upset or anything. I like your work, too. Like you, I prefer shorter, sharper hooks. However, IMO, "sharper" is more important than "shorter". Shorter is indeed generally better, but it's good to have a little extra info so that any general readers (esp. those not familiar with the topic) can appreciate the hook better, and add a little colour and hue so as to paint a nicer picture, so to speak. Hooks that are too short and lack context would appear to be esoteric, and readers would (or at least I would) just give up and move on to the next hook. You will probably disagree about this and I'll still be happy to work with you in DYK, too. It's probably best for us to just leave our comments on T:TDYK and let the hook selectors decide what ends up on MainPage. Oh, btw, User:Art LaPella is not my sock. :-) Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 01:40, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • I didn't think you were a sock...that was just a mindless error on my part because I was watching Lord of the Rings and trying to articulate at the same time! Nor did I think you were upset; I just thought some preventative medicine wouldn't hurt. As for the actual matter under discussion, I guess we both value brevity, only to much different degrees. The cases where I've suggested a cutting a hook way back and someone adds some of it back is exemplary of collaborative editing at its best. Thanks for the note and best wishes. - Boston (talk) 02:07, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{opentasks}} and AtyndallBot

edit

Hello PFHLai, just letting you know that AtyndallBot is once again operational and now, instead of choosing the oldest articles from a category, randomly selects 6 from each category, updating every 3 hours. You can continue to use the subpages of the opentasks template (categories that cannot be parsed by the bot) that you already know to update the tasks but any changes made to the main opentasks page will be automatically overridden by the bot. Thankyou very much for your time and suggestions. — ^.^ [citation needed] 11:29, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Smoking in Japan for DYK

edit

Thank you for your suggestions-what angle would you DYK, and will you help me with footnotes? Thanks, Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 03:07, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, Chris. I've posted two DYK hooks at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on October 26. Please feel free to propose new hooks there as you see fit. Just make sure the corresponding footnotes are present in the Smoking in Japan article. I've added some {cn} tags and some footnotes with refs in the article. Hope this helps. Please add more footnotes to the article (and replace those {cn} tags) if you can. Thanks. Happy editing. :-) --PFHLai (talk) 05:11, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Chinese people in Madagascar for DYK

edit

Thanks for the DYK nomination --- I modified the hook a bit and rewrote the paragraph in question because after I reread the source, I think it meant the present day and not 1896 --- that also agrees with the numbers I got from other sources. Hi Lai,

In response to my suggestion of an image for yesterday's featured article, you mentioned the "TFA Director". I was just wondering: who is the TFA Director? and are there other types of "directors" on Wikipedia?

DYK credit problem: Mike Tompkins

Hello! Thank you for passing along the DYK honour for Mike Tompkins. However, there is a problem -- that was a joint nomination from myself and User:Jonathan321 -- but Jonathan321 did not get the DYK honour notification. Can you please correct that oversight? Thanks! DYK for Briolette of India -- Thanks for the help!

edit

Hi PFHLai! Thanks for your help with the article Briolette of India and nominating it at T:TDYK. I'll be adding more detailed info to the 'history' section tomorrow (I'm a bit busy right now), so there's no need to move the lead section to that part. So I'm re-adding that part to the lead. In fact, I was thinking of providing a chance for an inexperienced user to improve the history section, so that he can get some experience at article building. Thanks again, and please note that I'm not trying to own the article here ;) Chamal talk 13:43, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adding extra spaces for multiple credits

When you swapped hooks, you didn't add extra spaces for Punkmorten, which resulted in the bot giving the same credit twice on his talk page. I'm notifying myself about my own nom again because DYKBot (talk · contribs) has forgotten about me again! (Instead, he did this.) Sigh....

Anyway, this nom. has brought my total DYK count to 750+ successful DYK nominations (including one self-nom.) Yeah! :-) --PFHLai (talk) 21:19, 30 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

******************* Absolutely 100% Brilliant ******************

I know you are not too sure about this but I am going to move you up the DYK list. I think 750 noms is excellent. Lots of editors will have had there 15 minutes of fame due to your efforts. We need more nominators. I also note that you help new editors through their difficult "births" of their first few DYKs. WELL DONE! Well Done Victuallers (talk) 08:22, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
