- @Gene93k: Ouch, sorry about that, I obviously didn't think it through carefully enough. I also wanted to add a shortcut WP:JUDGE, but then discovered that it's already in use as a redirect to a failed notability proposal for law. So I've raised that one as Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion#Wikipedia:JUDGE rather than make any rash changes myself. Looks like I should have suggested the section heading change on the talk page and left it to someone who knew what they were doing to make the change. PamD 17:31, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

- @Tymon.r: - Ah yes, I can see how that happened! I don't check the timing before sending messages like that one, as it's so common for enthusiastic page curators to slam on inappropriate stub tags. Something to look out for - I'm looking at the page history to see who added it, so will now try to remember to look and see whether the addition of the first stub tag was at virtually the same time. - @DennisPietras: Hi - I've no idea why anyone labelled Little Yellow Duck Project genetics, except perhaps on the basis that it raises awareness of Cystic Fibrosis which is a hereditary illness. Though actually organ donation is the main aim for awareness! Glad I could find something more relevant. It's a splendid little project. I treat each month's Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red topic or two as a personal challenge, and enjoy editing way outside my areas of knowledge or interest but still creating well-sourced stubs for notable redlinked people! The rest of my contributions are a real mixed bag - I'm so glad that I've kept a record, from the outset, of why I created each article, as I sometimes come across something I started off and have no recollection of it till I check my list. New Page Review - newsletter No.2
- A HUGE backlog
We now have 804 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.
The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.
- Abuse
This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and
- this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
- this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
- This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.
Coordinator election
Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

In wikipedia's guidelines, I found this: [[1]]. And in that, I found this: Named natural features are often notable, provided information beyond statistics and coordinates is known to exist. This includes mountains, lakes, streams, islands, etc. And there is, about the eagles. I agree that it should be fleshed out more, and I am on that right now. You have produced 3 refs which show that the island exists, but they don't seem to tell us any more. - @Cormac Nocton: I think I now see what's happening: you have created a "Cusotm Signature" which doesn't include a link to your user page or talk page. To my surprise I can't see that this is explicitly required by WP:SIGNATURES, though it does say "A customised signature should make it easy to identify the username, to visit the user's talk-page, and preferably user page.", and the way to make it Weasy ... to visit the user's talk-page" is to make a link. Look around and you will see that every editor's signature includes such a link. Please amend your signature to include a link. If you don't, even the system's software thinks you haven't signed a post and adds an "autosigned" signature, as you can see above. Thanks. PamD 14:13, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Signatures must include at least one direct internal link to your user page, user talk page, or contributions page; this allows other editors easy access to your talk page and contributions log. The lack of such a link is widely viewed as obstructive.

- OK, I've fixed those refs, but you really should have a go at doing them yourself next time - I see various people have left notes on your talk page to help with creating references. As I said, if it's a website, then the basic minimum is to provide the full URL of the page, not just the home page of the site. And if you're using a reference more than once, you should give it a name and then re-cite it - look and see how I did it here. It's not difficult when you've learned how to do it. And it increases the chance of survival of your work - as you can see from the AfD discussion, the article was initially criticised, and nominated, because it wasn't possible to see what the references were. And now that we've got them as being from Wire and Time Out, it looks a whole lot better. (The Soundart ref said, at the bottom, that it was from Wire, so I chased that up and then cited it from there rather than from the copy at Soundart). There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia, but it's an interesting journey - have fun! PamD 21:42, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
- Another little point: it's always helpful if you could link to any article you're discussing on a talk page (as I request in the green box at the top of this one!): makes it easier both for the person you're addressing, and for any "talk page watchers" of theirs, to get straight to the article under discussion. Just another point - when a conversation is really all a to-and-fro on one topic, like this, it's best to keep it under just the one section heading rather than splitting it into 3 sections: just keeps the talk page more manageable. - And another little point: I don't know whether you've noticed, but lines you've typed as separate lines, like "Hello", all get run together into a single line - unless you put two new lines after each line, which will split them. Many of the articles are probably salvageable, with holdings in other major collections and biographical info there - what a pity that this editor was let loose to create such a mass of silly stubs about the particular items in the one museum's collection, without any thought as to how they fitted into an international encyclopedia. The Envale created articles

Hello PamD,
I just wanted to check with you to see if it is still okay to edit and work on the Envale articles. I read the complaint letter on the main board thing and saw where the supervisors had blocked him. I do not want to get in trouble for working on them. I mostly have just been filling the references and adding cats and stuff. I am trying to only improve the articles. Thank you. - @Antonioatrylia: I've got no official status here, not an admin, just an ordinary (long-standing) editor. I think that as long as the topic of an article is undoubtedly Notable, we should all carry on improving them - I think I saw a suggestion somewhere that they should all be moved to "Draft", but not that they should all be deleted.
- I can't see a pattern in the topics Envale creates - living and dead, scattered around continents and occupations - I wonder what motivates them? (Me, I keep a note on my user page of why I create each article, not least for my own reference when I come across something five years on and wonder what drew me to create it!)
- My pet hates about Envale's articles are the opaque references, abuse of "Official website", lists of books without any details (even though they seem to be using library catalogues as their sources, so have the info in front of them as they type!). But they also need generally fleshing out. You've been doing great work - keep on with it. It's a pity that the community didn't get its act together sooner after this started on 10 Jan, but we were all trying to be helpful to a newbie who just wouldn't take any advice. Sad waste of energy - if only they'd created a quarter of the articles to a reasonable standard. Another thing that occurs is that many of their creations have 3 names, and we need to check whether there's a duplicate article (aargh) or missing redirect/dab entry/hatnote for the 2-name version which people would expect to find in WP. Or move the articles if we think the common name is just the forename-surname pair. Ah well, I might do a blitz on that. Hi PamD: Thanks for your cross-references and clean-up of my stubby article (Mary Godfrey)! I have actually been a casual Wikipedia editor for years, but I don't often create new pages or interact with other users on talk pages. We were hosting an Art+Feminism event at my library, and I was sort of facilitating it (although I'm maybe not qualified) because nobody else here had any Wiki experience. - @JarrahTree: But notability is not temporary - if it was featuring in tourist guidebooks etc in its heyday, then it's notable. This article was created after a very longwinded AfD on its founder, and seemed to be the best outcome (there are incoming redirects from umpteen versions of Leo Fowler's name). Hello,
Would be great to get your guidance on making my own edits to an article that you have recently edited.
I'm trying to update the page for Ann Limb, using properly reference sources, but you reverted it saying it was unsourced.
Would be great to understand how I should approach these changes differently to make sure they meet the standards required.

- @TomMlillywhite: I did wonder whether the anonymous IP editor and yourself were the same editor. You did not cite any sources in what you contributed, and you removed all the existing, sourced, content. That's not the way to go about improving a Wikipedia article. Articles are built collectively, different editors adding to the existing content - unless there is a major problem with the existing content (copyright violation, personal attacks etc). You should not just arrive with your own set of content and over-write what other editors have already contributed. What you added read very much like Limb's personal CV. Perhaps you work with her or for her, or have a close connection such as family or friendship? In which case please read WP:COI about "Conflict of Interest". If you are editing as part of any paid work, please in particular read the section about "Paid editing".
- All content in Wikipedia should be sourced to Independent Reliable Sources. This is even more important for articles about living people (often referred to as "BLP" - Biographies of Living People", where the absence of reliable sources is grounds for deletion of an article. Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.
Recent changes
A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.
A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [3]
The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references />
block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [4]
Other changes:
- You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [5]
- The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [6]
- The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the icon) for quicker access. [7] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [8]
- You can now create

tags (sometimes used as<ce>
) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [9] - Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [10]
- The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [11]
- A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [12]

Point taken, and thank you for your patience. I'll see if I can whip it up to something more than re-stating what is on the list.
From memory, I saw a picture of an interesting Listed Building that didn't have an article, and thought "oh, it doesn't have an article" and then went back to to speedy deletion list without putting any effort to improving it.
There are some other UK micro-stubs I've started that could do with your expertise, if you are so inclined and have the time.

On Overlinking
Hi, Pam. As something of an "angel" on here, I do some of the work others seem not to want to do :) One of those things seems to be adding wikilinks.
As to the business of linking too few or too many items, I submit too many is better than too few or none. In addition, I saw fewer than 50 articles in English Wiki flagged for too many links- most of those had repetitive tags. If discreet, distinct, relevant or material (to even a small degree) concepts are linked in an article, and not repetitively, I've found it's quite difficult to overlink. Pointing to about anything that could elucidate things for a reader- how is that at all bad? They can ignore all links if they so choose, and reading a few more words in blue text ;) never killed anyone. Or only a couple of people :p If a topic has even a small bit of relevance to the main page, I've found myself clicking sometimes just to get perspective on the linked matter.
I can see your point about perhaps not linking, say, "meter (measurement)" on a page about a tall mountain, or "chair" on the page of the Holy See. However, things about where, when, and so forth relative to an article can have unforeseen importance to a given reader. "United States" and other major concepts are linked everywhere, by everyone, and serve as portals about a relevant concept. That type of geographic link, I propose, is quite necessary and desirable.
I'll look at some of the more minor links before I add them, but again, far better to err on the side of providing a convenient click mechanism (which is all it is) for a secondary topic than going all spartan. Every word on a page, especially if it involves an idea (noun) or action (verb[al]), is going to be important to someone at some time.

- @Veryproicelandic: Thanks for your work on the encyclopedia - a lot of us have our own little niches, like adding links or sorting stubs. If you disagree with the stated policy of the Manual of Style, perhaps you should open a discussion about it. Meanwhile, don't be surprised if people unlink some of your links. No, I'm not a WP staff member, just an ordinary editor.
- I see from your talk page that you've quite often linked to disambiguation pages. Do you know about the wonderful gadget you can use which shows links to dab pages in orange, so that it's easier to spot them and fix the problem? Go to "Preferences", "Gadgets" and look near the end of the "Appearance" section. It's very useful. It's always good practice to check every link you make, anyway, to avoid linking to either a dab page or an article which isn't the one you want because of a surprising choice of "Primary topic". I use Dab Solver whenever possible today- on a weekly basis, i.e. I agree, disamb pages are a pain to get directed to. I might go back and look at some of my notices from times past for those.
As to unlinking stuff, hey, I'm not gonna claim I know the Style Manual end to end. If someone thinks I overlinked, let them work with it. My job as I assign it to myself is to get the links in there for review so I can remove the deadend flag and let the next editor have his turn. That's all. If I fix a link or edit for style, call me even more generous :) I don't keep up with the progress of pages I edit. Most of the ones with deadends aren't top-flight matter, anyhow. Thornbird
I did my own searching for the source of this legend. I also found nothing that pre-dates the book. I found several blogs asking about the source of the legend and no good answers. One story often repeated is that it is an "old Celtic" legend, but I couldn't find anything to substantiate that. Some say the source is the book: [17]. Our article on the book, which is very poorly referenced, implies the book is named after the legend. But this could just be a misconception. But since there are no shortage of contemporary references to the legend, I feel we should somehow cover it. What do you think of redirects of "Thornbird myth" and "Thornbird legend" to The Thorn Birds where it talks about the legend. If he is "Notable" in Wikipedia terms, someone else will write an article about him. You need to find Reliable sources where he is discussed in independent reliable published sources - not just a private letter to him from an organisation. revision of wikipedia and wikispecies entries for Tyson R. Roberts
Dear Pam,
I have recently made substantial changes to both entries. This was done partly to correct a number of errors. For example, a number of patronyms named "robertsi" are named for other people. I have eliminated them.
Kindly note that 100% of the changes, new entries, etc I have made, such as literature citations, are strictly factual. There is nothing that could possibly be regarded as conflict of interest.
This message is being send because of a notice about the changes I have made warning that they might be summarily rejected. So far this has not happened. I hope that I do not have anything to worry about, since it cost me a lot of time and effort to edit these entries.
I anticipate adding a few more names to the list of genera named by me, and perhaps many more species named by me. Otherwise I am not plannkng additional changes.
A word from you indicating everything is in order would be appreciated.

- @Tyson R. Roberts: No, I'm sorry but I'm not going to get involved in email correspondence. The normal way to discuss Wikipedia editing is on article talk pages or user talk pages. Wikipedia has firm policies about "Conflict of interest", which include that you should not edit the article about yourself. Proper procedure regarding articles by blocked accounts
Greetings. On NPP, we come across articles created by blocked users all the time. Recently, I came upon an article by user:Yahadzija, Željezno Polje. The article, while not having any good sourcing available online, does have articles on other wikis which are sourced, so the village exists, so I tagged it as a stub and marked it reviewed. However, I noticed in your SPI on Novonium, that there might be a policy that regardless of the notability of the article, if an editor has been blocked, then the article might be deleted regardless. What is the proper procedure?
The reason I'm asking is that in NPP, one of the tactics I use to reduce the backlog is when I find an editor who seems to know what they are doing, I check for other articles they've done which need reviewing, then review those as well. Yahadzija has several other articles to be reviewed, many of them of this village type, which are easy to check notability. Thanks for any guidance. Onel5969 TT me 13:47, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Onel5969: I think the circumstances are different. The Novonium articles under discussion were apparently created by a blocked editor, while they were blocked, using sockpuppets, and so should be deleted (if the sockpuppetry is confirmed). Željezno Polje was created on 12 January 2017, but user:Yahadzija's first block wasn't until May 2017, so there's no problem with that article. It seems that Yahadzija is now a sockpuppeteer, so if there were any articles created by User:Falcon Bos while Yahadzija was blocked, those would be eligible to be speedy deleted G5 as having been created by a blocked user - but there aren't any. Proposed deletion of Olivia Wardell
Hi PamD. I've just replaced your prod of Olivia Wardell with a BLP prod. As Wardell is almost certainly still living, a BLP prod is more appropriate. It also has stricter conditions for its removal (at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article), so isn't so easy to dismiss as a normal prod. This is because of our WP:BLP policy, which sets stricter standards for sourcing and content when the subject is a living person.

- @RexxS: I know about BLP prods: I didn't use it here because the article has a source, albeit not a reliable one - the Twitter feed confirms that someone of that name exists, and as I understand it that's enough to make the article ineligible for BLP prod. Although a reliable source is needed for removing a BLP Prod, any source which confirms any information in the article is sufficient to stop a BLP Prod being placed. Of course, it's possible that something useful had scrolled off the Twitter page, but that's another reason why Twitter just isn't usable for sourcing. in any case, if the article is to survive, it's going to need reliable sourcing and the BLP prod is possibly the kindest way of encouraging better sourcing, as WP:REFUND is easy to request after a prod, once decent sources have been found. However I believe the article I cited is reliable because it shows footage taken from the programme of Wardell winning the competition and therefore verifies the information. In my opinion, a better way to determine whether a Top Model winner meets WP:ANYBIO would be a centralised discussion (which might also work for determining when it is and isn't appropriate to use BLPPROD, provided that hasn't already been done to death). - I would have thought that the winner of any significant award or honour would have attracted at least a little bit of notice in a respectable newspaper. I see the Daily Mail reported it, but we all know how the DM is viewed. As for OK!, well, a source's reliability depends on context, so you're probably right that it's sufficient to support the statement that she won. I doubt that even OK! can get that wrong. What I'm not not seeing, of course, is any in-depth coverage by good quality sources - the kind of coverage that tells us more than we can already glean from looking at Britain's Next Top Model #Cycles, which is why BLP1E has to be seriously considered as grounds for a redirect.
- Of course, if Wardell goes on to do something else noteworthy, and it shows up in decent sources, then I'd have no reservations about supporting a separate article on her. Incidentally, we have articles on 9 of the 11 winners, most of whom have no other claim to notability than BNTM, and whose articles are woefully referenced. Contrast that with Countdown – possibly the longest running TV game show in the UK, which has over 6,500 episodes over 75 series – where we have articles on just 4 of the winners, 2 of whom went on achieve further notability as series producers. I really don't think we do our readers any service by producing a stub bio of every winning contestant of every TV game show, but I assume I'm in a minority in thinking that. - @Rogersansom: "Disambiguation" is sorting out which of the several things called "The Circle" etc you are heading for. If you click on the link The Circle you get to a page with choices. Choose one, and edit your link so it points to it. Perhaps you want The Circle (play) (Somerset Maughan play no-one's yet made an article about). If so, change your link so it looks like this:
[[The Circle (play)|The Circle]]
. That means "Show the words "The Circle" but link to the play". There's a short cut called "The Pipe Trick": enter the link as[[The Circle (play)|]]
(note the vertical line, the "pipe"), and it will convert automatically to[[The Circle (play)|The Circle]]

Thank heaven there's only a handful of them, and I have just disambiguated all links I could find on them, after "the penny dropped". I THINK I did it right. I hadn't actually seen your reply until I began to write this, but what I did seemed to work. Of course "ambiguities" varied from the not-terribly-grave-but-corrected-anyway, like having strictly speaking said (by linking) that a subject played the play of "Macbeth" instead of the part of Macbeth - to the comic, involving Noel Coward's "Still Life", which linked to ... yes, you can guess, flower pictures etc. I have also done a lot on Gordon Griffin. My head is now spinning, and I shall sign off. I'll read properly your valued advice on the right way to do it when I'm fresher and can take in more. Thank you SO much. - @CooeeCapella: Hallo and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm not really familiar with the "Articles for Creation" process, but by copying a draft which hadn't yet been approved into "article space" you seem to have been trying to bypass the system, which isn't good.
- But a much worse problem, to my mind, is that you were effectively stealing someone else's work. Yes, you said what you were doing, but without the previous editor having any credit for the article. It's important that the whole editing history of an article is preserved, so that we can see, forever, who contributed which parts of it. By doing a "copy-and-paste" you lost the whole history of the article. If in some circumstances it's appropriate to copy all or part of one article into another (perhaps to split an over-long article), there are rules about how to do it and how to ensure that the history is still traceable. See Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia for much more information.
- I hope that makes sense! I didn't know quite what to do when I realised what had happened, so I raised it with DGG who is a very experienced and wise editor and deals with the AfC procedure a lot. I see that he's done a bit of tidying up of the article too ... and I've subsequently tidied up a typo of his, too.
- There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia, but it's an interesting journey. Happy Editing! PamD 19:54, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks very much Pam for very complete suggestions and help. Even if I am part of the Geneva Water Hub team, I am trying to complete these two pages with a total independent view. I could not suggest any modifications to these pages as they were not existing. I am having issues with the French translation of these pages, Geneva Water Hub and Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace. I cannot "continu" or "delete" the already existing ones (1 month and 2 months old) which do not match the English version now. Could I ask you for your help on this ? Thanks very much.

- You could upload the logo again under a new name, copying it from an official source ... but that would involve cropping the image at either http://www.genevawaterhub.org/scald/pdf/render/588?width=900&height=600&iframe=true (but there's a date top right which would need to be edited out) or http://www.geneve-int.ch/geneva-water-hub-0 (not sure the resolution is good enough there). Then use that image in the article - the old copy will become an "orphaned non-fair use image" and be deleted eventually. If it was just a matter of copying a logo image file from your organisation's website I'd have done it by now, helpfully, but I'm not going to get involved in all the work of trying to sort it out from either of those sources. To be honest there's no clear evidence that the version with curved lines is the official logo, it occurs so rarely. PamD 14:27, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

- @Rogersansom: You really do need to get accustomed to using talk pages, as that's how Wikipedia works! Glad to see that you worked out how to sign your message this time. On the draft: could you add page numbers to your book sources, refs 6,7,8 (I've also enhanced them by using the {{ISBN}} template which makes the ISBN into a link to further sources which verify the book's existence and show its presence in libraries etc). I think the external sources I added on 6 July are sufficient to demonstrate notability. In fact, as any editor can move a draft into article space, I shall now do so. Then fingers crossed that other editors don't disagree with my judgement. I'll be away for a week from tomorrow with only mobile phone (ie very restricted, on mine anyway) editing capability. Robert Dalzell
Got your messages re Robert Dalzell. As you noted on your second message, the primary topic article should have had a hat note - but did not. Regrettably, I only saw the disambiguation page after I'd moved the Dalzell who died in 1878 and was planning on redirecting the dab page (thanks for doing that). Regarding clearing up the redirects (your third message), I have already dealt with the only obvious one in article space ([21]). The other page in article space (Henry Hawley) almost certainly had a link to the wrong Robert Dalzell. Perhaps that should link to General Dalzell, not Colonel Dalzell? In the past, I have never thought it worth going through the non-article pages (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/DNB Epitome 13) but if you or someone else was to make a convincing argument as to why that would be valuable then I could add it to be "to do" list. I do wish people would remember to make hatnotes to link to dab pages, and another hobbyhorse is the number of editors who'll happily create "Xyz (abcd)" without making sure it's linked from "Xyz" by either a hatnote or a dab page entry. About your sending me a "Welcome to Wikipedia" message: I have been editing sporadically on Wikipedia since 2003 but, for reasons beyond my control, my editing was interrupted for several years. When I returned to Wikipedia, I found my account name had been arbitrarily removed and a random name assigned to me. My editing history appears to have been discarded in the move.
About your repeated concerns about a conflict of interest: I do not work for or with Mr. Auraeus Solito. I am a volunteer for several non-profit organizations, all of which deal with indigenous issues, and Mr. Solito's work on indigenous culture is followed by one of those non-profits. I updated the Aureaus Solito Wikipedia entry some time ago, as it was out of date, and he subsequently learned of my identity as "the person" at the non-profit who corrected and updated Wikipedia articles. This past Spring, he contacted me to ask why on Wikipedia his primary name of Auraeus Solito points to his secondary or pen name of Kanakan Balintagos, since he no longer uses Kanakan Balintagos when working as anything other than a playwright. As a courtesy to Mr. Solito, I put in a request with Wikipedia to move the article from Kanakan Balintagos to Auraeus Solito.
Mr. Solito recently contacted me again when he saw that Wikipedia had made no change to the article, and that his name continues to be listed incorrectly. I can't blame him for that, as I now see that if Mr. Solito had contacted Wikipedia directly about this issue, he would have been sternly told that he suffered from a conflict of interest, and that there was a special procedure in place where he would need to show good cause why his name should be corrected.
I now see that, more than likely, the first Redirect must be removed from the article "Auraeus Solito" and then a second Redirect must be placed at "Kanakan Balintagos" and then a "correct move" needs to be specially requested, not just normally requested -- and that would be only the beginning of the process required to correct those two articles. None of this can or will be done by me. I have no interest in this.

- @Kudpung: I've logged back on today, mostly because I was eager to add a couple of photos I'd taken to Thomas Thwaites and expand that article by mentioning the V&A installation (one element of the break was a real away-from-home break to London - it was such fun to walk into a gallery of the V&A, see that installation quite unexpectedly, and think "I've read the book: I've written the Wikipedia article"!). Then got waylaid onto the recent episode of The Museum of Curiosity and found three interesting red links: now three good solid sourced stubs. I'm about to log off again as there is still too much real life stuff I need to do and I need a break from the delightful time-sink of stub-sorting and other Wikignoming. hi PamD, thank you so much for the work you did on Joe Texidor. i just happened to notice you edited after i did, and saw you included a link to "sound tree." however, it doesn't seem like a page with that name exists on wikipedia. i removed the red link, but i urge you to expand on what a sound tree is, as someone uncertain about musical instruments may not know. thanks! - Red links indicate articles which don't yet exist but which someone ought to write some time. I haven't a clue what a "Sound tree" is (though it is mentioned in several sources so isn't a typo), but someone might well write that article eventually. - thank you for your response, PamD. i didn't realize that's how red links work, so i appreciate the insight. however, i don't feel that sound tree is qualified to be a page at all. a detailed google search for it doesn't provide any notable links; the only thing i can find is a brand called sound tree, and musical instruments made for plants. if you can find links to make a strong page, please let me know. otherwise, i really don't think it's notable.

- You don't know what it is, I don't know what it is, but we know it existed from several different credits to Texidor and for example this (last line). So let's just leave the red link, together with my plea for help at the wikiproject, and see what turns up. It could do with a bit more history about what he was doing before taking up his current post (the Queen's source talks about him being "Chief Operating Office for London Underground during the terror attacks of July 7, 2005", for a start). Also I don't think we should SHOUT the title of a reference even if it appears in caps in the source - and the apostrophe in "Queen's" matters: fixed those two aspects. - @Dial911: no problem - sorry about the time zone thing. Red links are important in that they make potential future connections: it is very satisfying when you create a new article and find that there are instantly half a dozen "What links here" links which had previously been red. Adding redirects from other versions of someone's name can produce even more links - eg if they've been listed as an award winner under their full set of forenames, even though the article is at "Forename surname". Stub sorting on Twinkle
Hi Pam, hope you're well.
I was doing some NPP work a bit ago and I thought tagging the page just with {{stub}} makes more work for WikiProject Stub Sorting. I'm thinking of proposing a kind of drop-down "what kind of stub you talkin'" thing for Twinkle / Page Curation and thought I'd consult you as you seem quite active with stub sorting.

- @DrStrauss: I'm in two minds about encouraging NPP-ers to try to choose specific stub tags. There's a risk that they'll go for {{bio-stub}}, {{book-stub}} or {{Mexico-stub}} rather than digging down to find {{Widereceiver-1890s-stub}} or {{Scotland-engineer-stub}}; {{2010s-novel-stub}} or {{Agriculture-book-stub}}; {{Chihuahua-geo-stub}} or {{Mexico-bridge-struct-stub}}). And once it doesn't have {{stub}}, it doesn't appear in Category:Stubs, so it won't be found by the Stub-Sorters. But then we get to the philosophical question of "What are sorted stubs for?", "How many people ever search through a stub category?" and so on. Possibly just adding {{stub}} and appropriate project banners on talk page is enough (heretical viewpoint?).
- Assuming that we accept the usefulness of stub-sorting, then your drop-down system would need to go deep, deep, into the hierarchy of available stubs and encourage people to keep on looking until they'd exhausted the possibilities (which can include multiple stub templates for one article, don't forget). And not just stub categories - there are loads of officially approved stub templates which don't have their own categories. A challenging project! PamD 22:03, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

- @MJustice: Please don't give up on Wikipedia. I didn't actually delete Robert Kroese: I proposed it as an uncontroversial deletion as the article gave no evidence that he is a notable author. The article was then deleted, a week later, by an admin @Luk:. You, or anyone else, could have objected to that proposed deletion during that week. You can now apply to have the article undeleted - see Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion.
- Just publishing books is not enough to make an author notable in Wikipedia terms. See WP:NAUTHOR. For a novelist, if you can find and cite reviews (not just listings) of their work in what are considered Reliable Sources (mainstream newspapers etc), that usually satisfies. For Kroese, there's an article in the Independent which discusses him, and a listing which shows one of his audiobooks in a top 10. Try re-creating the article but adding sources which show that he isn't just "an author" but "a notable author" in Wikipedia's terms. Happy editing! PamD 10:53, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

The linked web page displays a banner/logo at the top; a direct link to the logo is www.jss.gr.jp/wp-content/themes/official/en/common/image/logo.png. Note that the name of the file is "logo.png". The logo says "The Japan Statistical Society".

- @Noellesch9: For a start, please do us all the courtesy of learning how to sign your talk page posts. Then discuss your problems with the page on its talk page. Read WP:NPROF and decide how to establish his Notability in Wikipedia's terms. In particular, look for information which other people have written about Kortanje in Reliable Sources, rather than just describing his work on the basis of his own papers. That's been the heart of the problems which all you editors (Raul, Miguel, Gabriel, yourself) have had.
- Oh and please don't SHOUT on talk pages, it only upsets other editors, and take care when adding replies in between other editors' posts. Your replies interspersed but unsigned have now left that talk page a very confused mess. PamD 22:03, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

- @Jackiespeel: Please slow down your work on all your various projects so that you make time to at least create full sentences when adding content to an encyclopedia, and follow the WP:MOS of starting the article off with the bolded subject name. That doesn't take long. Please rebalance your priorities between quality and quantity of articles. Thanks. And I choose my own articles to create, when I have an interest and a couple of decent sources for a topic (though I treat each month's WP:Women in Red editathon as a challenge to contribute at least one article): working through an unsourced list doesn't appeal. Proposed deletion of Hayes Carll albums
I've now removed several of your prods from these articles. For the latest one, Lovers and Leavers (album), the first two pages of a Google search found the following coverage: Rolling Stone, Rolling Stone, Allmusic, Metacritic (listing 5 professional reviews), PopMatters, Wide Open Country, No Depression. - @Domdeparis and RHaworth: I think that the statement that someone was a clan chief is an "assertion of significance or importance" which means that they should not be speedily deleted A7: take them to AfD if you feel that their article harms the encyclopedia. - I don't really think that the article "harms" the encyclopedia as such any more than any page that does not assert notability. The criteria for an A7 deletion does not make any reference to harm. I do not believe that being a clan chief guarantees that the person would be notable as per the 2nd part of the Wikipedia:Credible claim of significance test especially given that the page on clan chiefs states "While Scottish law recognizes the existence of Scottish clans, chiefs and chieftains, this recognition is only one of social dignity or precedence via the Lyon Court, and suggests as such it does not involve any interest for which the law has jurisdiction." - The article on George Maclachlan, 21st of Maclachlan could certainly be improved, as all the chiefs could be included in a list, with notes, making that a more useful reference. However, this article could be improved by stating where he was deputy lieutenant and justice of the peace. Was there not an interesting courtcase following his death? You could also note that he was father to an admiral, whose claim to an article in Wikipedia is, in my view greater, though he does not have one. - @Domdeparis: If you nominate an article to be deleted it should be because you believe that the encyclopedia will be better without it than with it. So if you don't believe that the article harms the encyclopedia, why nominate it for deletion? "Because I could" is not a valid answer. And A7 is not a test of notability: the 2nd bullet point says "if there is no evident claim of significance in the article ...", and to be the leader of a Scottish clan is a claim of significance. That said, entries in a list of the clan chiefs, either freestanding or as a table in the clan article, would probably be OK for some of this lot, the ones with nothing much else sourced to say about them, with incoming redirects from their names, leaving articles which have a reasonable amount of sourced content to stand. @Shamm2001: pinging original creator though they don't seem to have edited since the spree last June when they created stubs for many Maclachlan chiefs. - The article on George Maclachlan, 21st of Maclachlan could certainly be improved, as all the chiefs could be included in a list, with notes, making that a more useful reference. However, this article could be improved by stating where he was deputy lieutenant and justice of the peace. Was there not an interesting courtcase following his death? You could also note that he was father to an admiral, whose claim to an article in Wikipedia is, in my view greater, though he does not have one. - I don't really think that the article "harms" the encyclopedia as such any more than any page that does not assert notability. The criteria for an A7 deletion does not make any reference to harm. I do not believe that being a clan chief guarantees that the person would be notable as per the 2nd part of the Wikipedia:Credible claim of significance test especially given that the page on clan chiefs states "While Scottish law recognizes the existence of Scottish clans, chiefs and chieftains, this recognition is only one of social dignity or precedence via the Lyon Court, and suggests as such it does not involve any interest for which the law has jurisdiction." - @Shipsview: Estate duty was part of inheritance tax and as of 1889 the Crown claimed an additional 1% on successions over £10,000 and this was called estate duty. - I think it is a question of semantics. A correctly sourced article that doesn't meet notability standards is not "harmful" as such but it is not what wikipedia is about, such an article is out of the scope of Wikipedia so does not have its place here. One could argue that it does no harm to leave these articles here because they are not attack pages not copyvio not adevertising and are just taking up a bit of space. It's a little bit like sitting down in an empty 1st class seat on an aeroplane, you are not doing any harm as such as it makes no difference to the other passengers or the crew whether you are there or in economy, but it is not your place, nobody would argue that the crew would not be in their right to ask you to move back to economy class. The WP:DEL-REASONs do not say that an article has to be harmful to wikipedia (that idea is very subjective I believe) here we are in a case of #8.
- I totally agree A7 is not a test of notability as such and it may be that being a clan chief is sigificant enough, but from what I can gather as there are no guidelines as to what significant means it is up to each person to decide. The very fact that an admin deleted a clan chief under A7 and you removed the tag on another clan chief page is proof of this subjectivity. Domdeparis (talk) 13:29, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Hallo all my talk-page watchers and anyone else who drops by. I've just written a longish post at Talk:Ahmed el Inglizi and thought I'd copy it here for a wider audience!
Redirects, please
Hallo, people who have this article watchlisted ... and there are certainly lots of you who have edited it since 2010.
Please, remember that an alternative name bolded in the lead is supposed to be the target of a redirect (or perhaps a hatnote or dab page entry): it shows the reader why they have landed on this page. That's the purpose of the formatting. So please remember to create that redirect. I've just created Ahmed El Alj and Ahmed Laalaj, both seven years late - they were in the article on 15 August 2010.
Redirects are important:
- They help the reader find the article they want
- They make it less likely that a future enthusiastic but misguided editor will create a second article on the same topic at a different title
- Satisfyingly-often they resolve a redlink which may have been around for years in another article: this happens particularly often when "Sue Bloggs" gets a redirect from her Sunday name "Anastasia Susan Bloggs" by which she was listed in some article about winners of an annual award, elections to a legislature, or participants in a sports event.
So please, make the redirects ... and then check that there aren't any wrong incoming links to them which need disambiguation.

Korstanje
The talk page is semiprotected because of relentless promotional editing by Argentinian IPs, which is almost certainly one person, who is to a very high degree of probability either Korstanje or a close connection. The correct response to attempts to circumvent this protection is WP:RBI. This IP is evading a block. Guy (Help!) 15:21, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
- Please don't do tat again. You are not allowed to proxy for block-evading users. Your extension of good faith does you credit, but as you must surely know, these IPs are the same person as the blocked sockpuppeteer user:Vanrobert99. If a talk page is semiprotected, at least please check that the IP trying to get round it, is not the same ISP and location as the one that caused the protection. Yes? The Salazar article has been AfD'd once, and recreated by the same user (who could it possibly be?!). However, I didn't want to speedy per G4, as there's more of it now, and I guess I'm not sure I'm supposed to prod it either. Can't find anything against it in WP:PROD, but maybe I didn't look carefully enough. Anyway. Bishonen | talk 23:47, 8 February 2018 (UTC).
- I understand. And thank you I misread it. However, I caution you to be very careful here: there is a long-term problem of abusive editing, and any Argentine IP address is almost certainly going to be a sock of the blocked user. You can check the ISP by looking at the contributions of the IP, and down at he bottom is a WHOIS link. The blocked user uses one of two ISPs, both in Argentina. Contributions of 190.104.232.0/24, for example, show nothing, over more than two years, other than promoting Korstanje. So you need to be careful (a) not to allow your good nature to be abused and (b) not to inadvertently proxy for a banned user. As I say, I absolutely assume good faith on your part, and it does you credit. I am assuming that you understand IP allocation, geolocation and how to check for subnets and the like, but I'm happy to explain if not. I am deeply suspicious of the claims around Korstanje because he is far too young to be as influential as his sock army makes out: the only academic I know who reached full professor at that age, is now a deputy vice-chancellor, has a string of patents as long as your arm, has many hundreds of publications including books - one of which is a standard undergraduate text - and he would look, on paper, less impressive than this guy. Which either means that he's some kind of prodigy, despite his modest institutional associations, or, more likely, he's engaged in assiduous self-promotion. And incidentally I know a lot of academics, and the same is true for pretty much all of them across multiple fields. Even the guy who has, at a similar age to Korstanje, won national prizes covered beyond the specialist press and written popular books. So: this hits all my suspicion buttons. I confess I don't look much beyond the obvious abuse. To address that, I have seen a lot of examples of spammers who, when they get pushback, play the WP:OTHERSTUFF card. I suspect that is what happened here, having looked at those articles. And I agree that both look like adverts. Guy (Help!) 23:58, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Good to meet you. You tagged the redirect Unitarian Society Meeting House for deletion because its main article link, the Madison, Wisconsin branch meeting house, may not be the only place using that term. I had doubts as well before creating the redirect, but checked out google and all of the main sources or mentions google-link back to the Wisconsin site. This surprised me, but the historical church did seem to carry that title as well, so I went ahead with the redirect. Minor edits
I generally don't make many minor edits to articles, excluding the reclassificatory ones that I make as the consequence of adding new information to old articles or re-direction pages or through the creation of new articles. The common-name removal in that instance was not given reference, and was not generally used in the context of the article. Hi PamD, Greetings to you. I need advice on the topic "merge". After reading the merge instructions, I got a little confused on how to perform a discussion merge. Kindly advise if my understand is correct as below and please correct me accordingly. Example: Propose "Texas" to merge to "U.S."
1 On the destination page - On "U.S." Talk page inserts the following == Merger proposal ==
I propose that "Texas" be merged into "U.S'. I think that the content in the "Texas" article can easily be explained in the context of "U.S", and the "U.S" article is of a reasonable size that the merging of "Texas" will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned.
2. On to be merge page - on "Texas" article page places the following {{Mergeto|"U.S"|discuss=Talk:"U.S"#Merger proposal|date=February 2018}}

- @CASSIOPEIA: I use "Twinkle": it makes life so much easier. In its drop-down menu it offers "merge", "mergeto" and "mergefrom", and in each case prompts you to put in the article names and then does all the necessary. I haven't looked into doing it by hand, but I'm sure the instructions at WP:MERGE are the ones to follow, so just take a deep breath and read them very carefully then go ahead accordingly. Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.
Recent changes
- The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
- The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [23]
- Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [24]
- The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.
