Dog article styles

edit

Welcome to the dog breed project and thanks for your work.

The usual way to present text is in an encyclopedic narrative form (complete sentences, for example). So the recent additions to Coton de Tulear need to be turned into full sentences with flowing paragraphs. Just thought I'd let you have the opportunity to make a first pass rather than jumping in myself immediately. Ask if you have any questions.Elf | Talk 20:33, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

There's a really great picture of a Coton on a Madagascar Postage Stamp on this web site: Coton History.Since this is in public domain (as a postage stamp, obviously), we can use it, right? There's also a picture of Glen Close with her pet Coton, but that, I'm sure is Copyrighted.I don't know how to add pictures, so can you help?

German Pointers

edit

Hi there. User:DuckersOfOutracks recently added some "commonly reffered" [sic] names to German Longhaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, and German Shorthaired Pointer. However, I fail to find any use of these terms, and they rather look like original research to me. As you moved one of these to alternative names, did you do that for aesthetic reasons, or is that term actually in use? --Nikai 11:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

American Buffalo

edit

Thanks for editing the images.Would you mind tryin one where they overlapp just slightly, obverse left and slightly above so as to not obscure any of the reverse.May come out to small, like the side by side one.If to much trouble, don't sweat it.THNXJoe I 12:59, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, for FP.Check here.Basically like the nickels are at the very top.If you go down the page slightly, there are American Buffalo overlaps, but part of the buffalos are blocked by the indian. The edges of the coins are no problem to block, but the main images(indian and buffalo), would not be.If you have to rotate the coins around each other in some other way thats cool. Was just lookin for a way for them to seem more connected and together, otherwise it looks like two pictures.Joe I 13:23, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Portuguese Pointer

edit

Thanks for the improvements in the article. I included a picture of my own dog. I don't know if the picture is the best, but I couldn't make it stand, as he spends 90% of the time sleeping. He is 11 years old and I never seen other dogs of the same breed, only in magazines. The black thing in his left ear is a bunch of flies, it's summer and everything is full of them. If you need help, just say. Cheers!

Your edits to the American Buffalo images

edit

I notice you uploaded three edited images to the American Buffalo coin nomination (Image:2006 American baffalo proof.jpg, Image:American buffalo proof vertical.jpg and Image:American buffalo proof diagonal.jpg). Unfortunately none of them were promoted, and as such there are not used in any articles. Would you mind if I deleted them as redundant images? Raven4x4x 09:24, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Edits to Pointer breed

edit

Please refrain from editing breeds you are not familiar with, or an expert on.Pointers are not a common breed, and adding and removing links explaining breed history is not helpful to other users. If you have not read through a site which is linked there, kindly refrain from removing it. PS, I see you continue to change items you have no familiarity with.Again, please leave the page alone.

No, The Retriever picture will keep going up, Its not a bad thumbnailed picture and user can quite clearly see if without having to click it. And the Retriever pictures you have taken down saying they don't show the breed well. Your wrong,People want to know what the older version of the dogs looks like,Just because they dont meet 'YOUR' standards, Doesn't meant a potential retriever buyer won't want to see what their pup will grow up into. Rob ashton

The persian cat picture will keep going up, he is a fine specimen, Not all pictures are 100% perfect,You know naff all by the sounds of it,It is clear enough for the human eye to see, Its not like the persian looks like a bleedin Dalmation.... N33B Rob ashton

English pointer

edit

This was done at the request of a representative of the AKC to the Foundation via OTRS (our ticketing system). She pointed out that the name is incorrect and no such breed is registered either by the AKC or FCI. I have attempted to clarify that in the article and added a brief section on name. The Redirect from English pointer should suffice. Danny 14:36, 22 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Photo edits?Why?`

edit

Curious about two of your article edits. On the American quarter horse article, you removed the width formatting command and the "right" command from both images. Why?I am all for learning new tricks on Wikipedia to get better at this, but I also have run across a lot of articles with HUGE photos and thought saying something like "200px" fixed the width and kept them from getting too big. What does "thumb" alone do?The images look the same.

Also wonder why you put the request on the Arabian horse (talk) page for a photo. The talk page doesn't need photos, and the Arabian article now has as many as it really can hold--I think I put out a request for photos months ago, and don't even remember how to find the page where I posted it so I can remove the request.Anyway, the Arabian horse article doesn't need photos now, though if someone had one that was an improvement in quality over what's there, that could be useful.(Most "improved" photos were removed because they actually were not representative of the breed, or are "here's my own pony/isn't he cool?" sorts of things...)

Anyway, let me know what was going on with those photo edits. And can we take out the photo request flag from the talk page? Montanabw 01:58, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply. While I agree with you that it would be nice to headline the Arabian horse article with a better image than the painting (I added the painting, sort of in desperation), getting a GOOD photo has been a nightmare. (Pardon the pun)Commons doesn't have a suitable image that showcases a good representative of the breed in a fair and flattering manner, and everything else I can find is "fair use" at best (though I might be able to find pre-1923 B&W photos, though they wouldn't be an improvement on the painting, I don't think.I think I put out a request a while back, and what came in that wasn't "my little pony that I think is an Arab," was soapbox and promotional stuff like, "here's my stallion that should be gelded, but I took this photo and doesn't he look like a champion?" <sigh>So, I agree that a basic conformation shot IS a really good idea, until something new comes in, or I talk someone into releasing a quality photo under a GNU license, I am just sort of worried about the crap that could emerge.Don't mean to be cynical, and thanks for allowing me to vent!Montanabw 01:53, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

85.92.183.119 spam

edit

Thank you for leaving a message on the above user's talk page. Since I'm relatively new to WP, can you tell me why we're waiting any longer before implementing an edit block for this IP address? It is pretty clear from their "contributions" that they are simply working their way through the dog breeds in alphabetical order and inserting their spam link of choice. At last count, I believe they've done this on 15+ different breed pages. --Keesiewonder 00:40, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for your reply and info! I wish this user's block was longer. It is for 31 hours. Want to bet they never notice, or simply wait a few hours if they do, and then resume their spamming? There's a part of me that would like to see WP move such that someone could not make edits unless they created an account, other than whatever their IP address happens to be. Have you seen any discussion on this? I expect it to be a very controversial idea. BTW, I have to think that I helped get the block, along with you, since last evening I cleaned up all their remaining mess that I could find. Hi, Pharaoh Hound. Thanks for your great work on the Dogs portal. BTW, I think I took out the part about snorting & smiling a couple of times myself. It's by no means unique to the aussie--all of my dogs of varieties of random breeds have snorted and often look so happy that they appear to be grinning. So I agree that it doesn't belong here, any more than "this breed sometimes barks" or "this breed wags its tail when it's happy." Elf | Talk 21:05, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tervuren

edit

Hi Pharaoh Hound. As you noticed, I just moved the page "Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren)" to "Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervuren)". Though I'm still not all too happy with the present name: It should be the most common name in English, which is either simply "Tervuren" (a name ambiguous with the place of origin of the breed) or "Belgian Tervuren". I'll leave it as it is because if forms a series with Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois)/(Groenendael)/(Laekenois). In fact it seems that "Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren)" occurs more often than "Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervuren)" but only in that particular phrasing. In combination with "shepherd" in general, "Tervuren" occurs far more often than "Tervueren" and obviously, the dog is most often simply called a "Tervuren". I googled (Google is not case-sensitive) excluding -wiki -wikimedia -wikipedia -wikimiki and took in account in particular the shown extracts (verifiable, unlike "hits", which delivers a for various reasons utterly worthless figure):

  • 797 "belgian tervuren" shepherd OR sheepdog OR dog (323,000 raw hits)
  •   29 "belgian shepherd dog tervuren" — identical result as for "belgian shepherd dog (tervuren)" (only 42 raw hits)
  • 247 "belgian tervueren" shepherd OR sheepdog OR dog (only 686 raw hits)
  • 227 "belgian shepherd dog tervueren" — identical result as for "belgian shepherd dog (tervueren)" (12,900 raw hits)

Note: the most general search, which should include both the above and others without the term 'belgian', delivers the maximum that Google actually shows (a figure close to one thousand when repeat the search with the omitted results included is asked) and merely demonstrates Google's foolishly careless selections [the '693' is even less than '797' by the more restrictive search including 'belgian tervuren']:

  • 693 on first show [as the above] or 992 [show all] "tervuren" shepherd OR sheepdog OR dog (406,000 raw hits)
  • 759 on first show [as the above] or 997 [show all] "tervueren" shepherd OR sheepdog OR dog (240,000 raw hits)

Judging by your user name, I assume you know more about classifications of dog breeds than I do. Perhaps you can inform me on what basis one tends to see only these four breeds as mere variants of one race, whereas I have the impression that the German Shepherd Dog could fit just as well in this group. I think some of the four can be trained as guide for the blind as well as the German. The German is slightly taller than the Malinois and may have a somewhat wider head and is considered less nervous and thus easier to train and handle, though the differences do not seem very notable, and the German can also be regarded (e.g. fur length & feel, and colour) as between the Malinois and the Groenendael. Is there more to it than the 'coincidence' of the four Belgian Shepherd Dogs stemming from the same side of the Belgian/German border?

Thanks for your message. I'll get a Tall Coton photo up soon! Poodle Girl 00:04, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

How should I credit you?

edit

Hi Pharoah. My name is Noah Berlatsky; I work at a correspondence high school (high school courses through the mail). I wanted to use one of your photos in the material we print for our students (it's a picture of a cheetah.) It's a Creative Commons license, so I need to attribute you — but I'm not sure how you want to be credited. Do you want to be Pharoah Hound? Emily? Should I use your full name? Let me know; you can contact me at my talk page, or you can email me: noahberlatsky at hotmail.com. Thanks! NoahB 16:05, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Emily,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:Cheese limburger edit.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on May 28, 2007. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2007-05-28.

P.S. I was wondering if you might reconsider the licensing of this image. The original is in the public domain, so it seems a little odd that you licensed your edit GFDL/CC-BY-SA. Regards, howcheng {chat} 00:02, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Gah! I'm so glad there are still some random knowledgeable people around working on dog articles, although I completely burned myself out. I just wanted to check one thing in the Australian Shepherd article last night and now all together I've spent 4 hours here cleaning up that and the merle article and trying to track some things down and failing and getting completely frustrated. OK, I'm going away again because I can't stand being here and not FIXING EVERYTHING. Elf | Talk 20:58, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Canon PowerShot S3 IS

edit

I notice you have an S3 IS, and I am wondering if you have seen this: CHDK.

I just found it yesterday, it is a 3rd party software package for the camera that allows you to shoot in RAW mode, and allows for in camera scripting. I tested it out and it works great. It does not replace the firmware on the camera but simply runs in the cameras RAM(not changing anything in camera that is). Just thought I would let you know as it significantly improved my camera. An encyclopedic value

edit

What is an encyclopedic value? In my opinion it is really hard to take a picture that has one. What encyclopedic value could have a blurry out of focus hummingbird, or even a sharp and focused hummingbird, for that matter? You see, everybody has a camera or two and everybody is taking pictures. Some pictures are really great and have a very high quality, but does it mean they have an encyclopedic value? I don't think so. Or let's take, for example, that Miniature Schnauzer (I hope I spelled it correctly) with his owner legs pictured out of focus behind the dog. Does that image has any encyclopedic value whatsoever? Here are Flickr search result for Miniature Schnauzer (I hope I spelled it correctly). As you could see it has 4732 pictures and I'm sure at least some of them are much, much better than the one from Wikipedia. I could have continued talking about an encyclopedic value, but I do not want to take your time any longer. By the way thanks for sharing with us your favorite quotations. I like them all and the best I like that one:

"There is no sin except stupidity." - Oscar Wilde

Please do not loose your time to respond the message. You could use it instead to make one more exiting edit. Best regards. Mbz1 16:04, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Mbz1Reply

Unusual Adoption Request

edit

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!

a small request

edit

As you probably know, the Boerboel article is a big nasty mess. There is some crazy anon complaining about stuff, and there are a couple SPA's created solely to edit the article. It's nuts. I just got involved with the article to do some image cleanup, as the lead image was pretty bad; dark and blurry. I just wondered if you would be interested in helping me cleanup and steward the article, considering your penchant for dog breed articles. Any help would be appreciated, VanTucky (talk) 20:05, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Shih Tzu page missing references

edit

Hi! You added a 'refimprove' tag to the Shih Tzu page in May 2007. I am incapable of determining whether the current state of the page still warrants the tag, but it looks like a lot of editing has been done since then. Could you please take a look at the page now and decide if the tag is still warranted? Khim1 10:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for looking into it! I found the most likely sources for some of the statements but they came from a blacklisted site (ezinearticles.com) so I'm not sure whether the statements should be removed or left there for someone else to take care of. Several other shaky statements were identified by someone else today so right now the article looks lite it's in need of a thorough and unbiased rewrite - not easy with an old toy breed, I'm sure. :) Khim1 18:00, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

SCHNAUZER PAGE Please cease and desist from removing images on the schnauzer page. There are not that many, i will re-edit them into a gallery. In the future it would be appropriate of you to ONLY ask the page what they think in a discussion. And when someone has advised why they reverted, dont use the same excuse as last time and re-do your edits. Its inappropriate and rude.69.25.80.2 (talk) 15:17, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orange dalmatian

edit

Hi there! I noticed you were the photographer of an absolutely gorgeous betta, and in your notes you said you hadn't seen the color variation before and didn't know what it was called. You might have figured it out by now, since the photo's over a year old, but in case you hadn't, what you have there is a lovely male veiltail orange dalmatian. They're relatively recent but not all that uncommon anymore, at least not where I live (US). One of my favorites. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know. The Boston Terrier

edit

I can understand what you said about the Doberman, it not being bracheocephalic and all, I never thought it was in the Boxer/Bulldog/Mastiff family of breeds, but why did you say that the Boston Terrier is not a molosser? I went and checked the article about them, and they seem to have been bred mostly from molossers. It's not in there with the bulldogs, etc? Chrisrus (talk) 05:26, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I went and checked and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_terrier#History I think you must have made a mistake. You seem to have been right about the Doberman, though. Should I put the Boston Terrier back in? Chrisrus (talk) 05:38, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Molossers

edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Molossers requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
