Editing news 2023 #1

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Assistance with implementing the CFD closure of "categories named after sports venues"

Thank you for closing the Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 February 4#categories named after sports venues discussion. Since there is a lot of work with purging before the smallcats can be identified, I'm happy to help out but don't want to overstep with your role as the closer.

Can I start purging the categories? - RevelationDirect (talk) 03:07, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

@RevelationDirect, feel free to start purging the categories. I listed the closure (I think) at WP:CFDM, so anyone can implement it. After you've purged the categories, you can empty the SMALLCATs and tag them with {{db-xfd}}, per the closure. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:06, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

Please reconsider Category:European sportspeople of Jamaican descent

Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 February 14#Category:European sportspeople of Jamaican descent

Merging 3 different countries to 1 (Jamaica) would be a very bad idea. That idiocy was suggested by the final comment, and nobody took it seriously. There were multiple deletes plus a support, and this was a followup to a larger delete.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 16:57, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

@William Allen Simpson, I have no way of telling if people took it seriously or not, as no one responeded to it.
I'll change the closure to delete. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:01, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. 'I' didn't take them seriously. For over a decade. When I see a comment by Marco or Fayanetic (or Good Olfactory and some others), they've actually looked at the categories and the articles. There are some who just post knee-jerk reactions.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 17:08, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
@Fayenatic london. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:05, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
I read Peterkingiron's suggestion as "Merge to Category:Sportspeople of Jamaican descent, etc". That is to say, merge Category:European sportspeople of Jamaican descent to Category:Sportspeople of Jamaican descent, the Dominican one to Category:Sportspeople of Dominican Republic descent and the Trinidad one to Category:Sportspeople of Trinidad and Tobago descent. – Fayenatic London 21:28, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

Bot request note

I see Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Qwerfjkl (bot) 16 has been approved. I went ahead and removed from the page of moves the ones that have already been moved manually, except for the ones you moved (at the top). Thanks for doing this! When these moves are done I'll do another run and may come up with a few dozen more. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 23:25, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

@Mike Christie, thanks, I'll try to run this sometime today. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:37, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
@Mike Christie, I've run this. There are a few I had to move manually due to a blacklist entry. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:31, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! I will do some post-processing and put together a (final, I hope) clean up list; it'll be much shorter. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 18:02, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Second list of bot move requests

Hi -- I've updated User:Mike Christie/GA subpages that should be moved with the new list of pages to move -- less than a hundred this time. Can you move these when you get a chance? Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 18:04, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

@Mike Christie, sure. I'm currently working through closing the longest CfD log page I've ever seen; I'll run the bot afterwards. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:11, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Prematurely closed discussions

please nominate the following 1-member categories to speedy deletion. You prematurely closed discussions, but categories still exist

--Estopedist1 (talk) 07:44, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

@Estopedist1, for the two that still exist, I have not closed their discussions. For the others, I listed them at WT:CFDW for an admin to process.
How did I "prematurely close discussions"? — Qwerfjkltalk 16:46, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
no problem. I see that the bot already deleted them. More power to your elbow! Estopedist1 (talk) 16:50, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi, regarding this close - when are you going to action the deletions? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:43, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

@Redrose64, as with all my closures, I have listed it at WT:CFDW for an admin to add to WP:CFDW, for the bot to process. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:13, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

Userscripts

Hey Qwerf! Since you stated you also have an issue regarding a FOUC, I was curious what userscripts you used so I could see which ones we have in common and begin eliminating those to find out which one is causing the issue. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:55, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

@Blaze Wolf, see User:Qwerfjkl/common.js and good luck. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:41, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
I think I managed to get it fixed. IT looks like the culprit was Ingenuity's AntiVandal script. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:44, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

CFD decision

Hello, Qwerfjkl,

It looks like in this CFD discussion, the bot merged all of the listed categories except for Category:1792 in the Austrian Netherlands and Category:1794 in the Austrian Netherlands. Is this a bot mistake or will the bot eventually get to them or were they simply ommitted from the list given to the bot? They were singled out in the CFD discussion so I'm not sure what happened here. Thanks for any insight you can provide! Liz Read! Talk! 23:05, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Also, please look over Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories and let me know whether these empty categories about the Austrian Netherlands will eventually be filled by the categories bot or whether you expect them to stay empty. Thank you for your help. Liz Read! Talk! 01:48, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi Liz, I'm not sure why the bot hasn't processed those two categories, it looks like a bot error. They've been listed on the working page. @Fayenatic london?
The empty categories appear to have been emptied; I don't think they're part of any discussion. Typically if they were being processed by the bot they would be deleted after emptied, so it was probably done manually. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:14, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
They were singled out in the discussion because they held articles directly, not only via subcats. Those two categories have not been deleted by the bot because they have an Establishments subcat which was overlooked by Marcocapelle in this nomination. There is also Category:1755 establishments in the Austrian Netherlands. I think I will delete them under WP:G6 but retrospectively add them to the nomination, for reference.
@Liz: The empty year categories can be deleted, but I recommend linking to the CFD in the deletion log entry. There will be others in parent levels that then become empty e.g. Category:Establishments in the Austrian Netherlands by year, Category:1720s in the Austrian Netherlands, Category:1720s establishments in the Austrian Netherlands. I consider it best practice to nominate all such layers rather than leaving them to be deleted as empty, so that people can more easily trace why they were deleted. – Fayenatic London 08:42, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
In retrospect I wish I had seen this CFD earlier. I would have opposed merger as removing a chunk of dates from the history of Belgium. Anyway, I have opened a follow-up discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Belgium#Deletion of years in Austrian Netherlands. – Fayenatic London 15:42, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

hello @Qwerfjkl-san i am here to ask about your signature length, the signature code seems fairly long for the signature length so can i know how did you save your signature? —— 🌸 Sakura emad 💖 (talk) 17:19, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
