Qwerfjkl (bot): Notifying users of reference errors failure - Fixed
Qwerfjkl (bot)'s task "Notifying users of reference errors" failed to run per the configuration specified at Wikipedia:Bot activity monitor/Configurations. Detected only 0 edits in the last 1 day, whereas at least 1 was expected. If/when the issue is fixed, please change the section title (e.g. append " - Fixed") or remove this section completely. When that is done, this notice will be reposted if the bot task is still broken or is re-broken. If your bot is behaving as expected, then you may want to modify the task configuration instead. Or to unsubscribe from bot failure notifications, remove the |notify=
parameter from the {{/task}}
template. Thanks! – SDZeroBot (talk) 10:44, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Y0ur bot's alert to my talkpage on an article
Hi there,
I wanted to let you know that your bot seems to have made a mistake alerting me on my talkpage. I ran the citation bot on Vernon Treweeke and it made an edit to a Facebook link, but it seems to have made an error. Looking at an earlier version of the page, it seems that the link was already wonky enough, so I took it out of the page entirely (ie: the citation bot didn't produce the preexisting error). I'm not sure if this is an error your bot made, but I just wanted to clear things up. Thank you again! Losipov (talk) 21:59, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Losipov, your edit added the article to Category:CS1 errors: bare URL, which is how the bot detects if errors have been introduced. I'm not sure if I can do anything about this case. — Qwerfjkltalk 06:11, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Qwerfjkl Thanks for the reply. The bot actually left another message for a similar edit on my talk page about TheDetroiter.com (a Facebook link seeming to be dead). Again, the url seemed to have been wonky before the edit that got flagged. Losipov (talk) 04:55, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Losipov, the error message is not about the URL, but rather that the title "Log into Facebook" is generic. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:06, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Bot task 17 optout?
I've added {{bots|deny=Qwerfjkl (bot)}}
to User talk:AnomieBOT because there's no point in your bot notifying AnomieBOT whenever its OrphanReferenceFixer task rescues a reference with the checked-for error. If there's a more specific {{bots|optout=}}
or the like, feel free to update that. Thanks! Anomie⚔ 12:59, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
I have done the same. I spend most of my time fixing cs1|2 errors. Sometimes I can't fix the existing citation but can improve it somewhat. That was the case with this edit where I renamed some parameters to more accurately reflect the assigned value; in this case switching |title=Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 28
to |journal=Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History |volume=28
. I know that I left errors; I don't need your bot to tell me that I have done so. If there is a better way to opt-out, please let me know what that way is.
—Trappist the monk (talk) 15:18, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Trappist the monk, @Anomie, do you think it would be worth adding to the message (User:Qwerfjkl (bot)/inform/bottom)? — Qwerfjkltalk 15:35, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- I don't see how that answers my op-out question.
- But, to answer your question, the text at User:Qwerfjkl (bot)/inform/bottom is already in the message that the bot delivered to my talk page (which see).
- —Trappist the monk (talk) 16:07, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Trappist the monk, sorry if I wan't clear. Adding
{{bots|deny=Qwerfjkl (bot)}}
is the only way to prevent the bot notifying. User:Qwerfjkl (bot)/inform/bottom is substituted as part of the notification; would it be worth adding opt-out instructions to that? — Qwerfjkltalk 16:11, 19 April 2023 (UTC)- Don't see how it could hurt...
- —Trappist the monk (talk) 16:23, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- To me that addition would make no difference. But I suppose there may be editors who aren't already aware of
{{bots}}
who might find the information useful. More useful, IMO, would be to notify about something like{{bots|optout=cs1-errors}}
if that were to work to avoid these specific notifications without denying anything else the bot might do. Anomie⚔ 18:07, 19 April 2023 (UTC)- @Anomie, unfortuantely, there doesn't seem to be a built-in way to do this with Pywikibot. I'll have to add it manually. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:44, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Anomie, @Trappist the monk, the bot should now skip pages with
{{bots|optout=cs1-errors}}
. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:03, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Roch Pedneault, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

Attack drafts
Hi Qwerfjkl, could you please tell your bot not to tag pages that have been blanked and tagged with {{db-g10}} or one of its redirects with {{AfC submission/draft}}? Attack pages should not contain anything but the deletion tag. After your bot's edit, these pages contain a notice that tells people to remove the {{AfC submission/draft}}, i.e. your bot essentially asks people to revert it. —Kusma (talk) 16:31, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Kusma, this came up in the bot approval. I thought I had ignored those, but apparently not. Done now. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:42, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Fico Puricelli on User:Fico Puricelli/sandbox (18:17, 29 April 2023)
Greetings. I wrote a draft that was rejected and can't be published. However, I think it should be published because I don't see any issues. But in case it doesn't happen, you could explain to me why the draft can't become an article. Thank you (I await for your answer). --Fico Puricelli (talk) 18:17, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Fico Puricelli, the reason it was rejected is because the reviewer said it was not notable, meaning the subject does not warrant inclusion on Wikipedia. the basic criteria are at WP:GNG. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:06, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you. I mistook that term about "inclusion" with "gender inclusion". I will try to fix it through a new draft/article. Thank you. Fico Puricelli (talk) 20:39, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Fico Puricelli, it may be WP:TOOSOON. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:41, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- No worries. The article is about a comic book event that happened last year. Fico Puricelli (talk) 20:46, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Fico Puricelli on User:Fico Puricelli/sandbox (16:15, 30 April 2023)
Greetings, again. Today I inform you that I fixed my two drafts, "Charge to 100" (a new version) and "Recharged", both being Power Rangers comic book events by Boom! Studios. Now I understand what you were trying to tell me. Once again, thank you, and I await for your answer. --Fico Puricelli (talk) 16:15, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Fico Puricelli, I'm unsure what I have to do with these drafts. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:49, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
- My apologies. I just showed these by chance, to make sure I did not make mistakes this time in case these are published as official articles. Fico Puricelli (talk) 18:04, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Maybe some pages left.
Hey, first of all, I really appreciate your work and edits regarding the replacements. I also understand that I may be bothering you again, but I think there are still some pages left to be checked. If you have time and feel comfortable doing so, could you please take a look at those remaining pages? Thank you, Thank you very much. Prarambh20 (talk) 19:41, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

The bot detects error by monitoring category changes, making this sort of error hard to pick up. — Qwerfjkltalk 06:14, 20 April 2023 (UTC) - @GreenC, okay, it's now stable. As I mentioned in my previous comment, this task only tracks categories, so I could set it to monitor this problem only if there's a specific category just for it. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:34, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Tech News: 2023-19
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
- When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [12]
- The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports
wikitext
as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such ashtml5
,moin
, andhtml+handlebars
, can now be replaced. [13] - Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses
preload=MediaWiki:July
. [14]
Problems
- Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [15]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
- Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review. [16]
Future changes
- During the next year, MediaWiki will stop using IP addresses to identify logged-out users, and will start automatically assigning unique temporary usernames. Read more at IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Updates. You can join the discussion about the format of the temporary usernames. [17]
- There will be an A/B test on 10 Wikipedias where the Vector 2022 skin is the default skin. Half of logged-in desktop users will see an interface where the different parts of the page are more clearly separated. You can read more. [18][19]
-
jquery.tipsy
will be removed from the MediaWiki core. This will affect some user scripts. Many lines with.tipsy(
can be commented out.OO.ui.PopupWidget
can be used to keep things working like they are now. You can read more and read about how to find broken scripts. [20]

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022
Hello Qwerfjkl,
Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.
Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.
Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.
Suggestions:
- There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
- Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
- Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
- This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.
Backlog:
Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!
- Reminders
- Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
- If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
- Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023
Hello Qwerfjkl,
- Backlog
The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.
- 2022 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!
Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)
New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js
to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js
Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.
Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Comment/question: Can the bot stay away from the draft space, as sometimes it is where we draft things, build an article; and receiving this immediate(ish) notification kinda counter productive.
FuzzyMagma (talk) 10:56, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- I have received two notifications for the same problem while I was doing something else and thought about coming back to this problem when I close to finish the draft or even before moving the draft to the mainspace and use the expand citation plug to fix this. FuzzyMagma (talk) 11:01, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- @FuzzyMagma, currently it waits 15 min before notfying an error. @GoingBatty, what do you think about avoiding draftspacce? — Qwerfjkltalk 15:35, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- @FuzzyMagma and Qwerfjkl: It seems reasonable to have the bot avoid drafts, and hope draft reviewers will manually address the issues with the submitters. GoingBatty (talk) 16:27, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- @GoingBatty, okay, I'll restrict it to mainspace. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:38, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Comment/question: My edit, specifically, did not introduce the CS1 error regarding a missing periodical. However, I did identify where the citation needed correcting and made the correction in a subsequent edit.

- @Zsinj, I think I've fixed this. The bot was set to ignore edits with tags
mw-undo
ormw-revert
but notmw-rollback
, which I've just added. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:03, 25 April 2023 (UTC)- Nice! Happy editing and bot running. :) ZsinjTalk 01:57, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
