Skald

  1. It's not at all clear that "skald" is a common misspelling of "scald"; I've never seen it, certainly.

WikiProject Java and Portal

I recently posted the following text on Wikipedia regarding the creation of a new computing-related project in Wikipedia:

'WikiProject Java is a Wikipedian community that aims to better organize information in articles related to the Java programming language and its platform.

  • If I'm cor-rec-to, there are about 900 articles on Java technology in Wikipedia, which may be more than ALL other programming languages articles combined...
  • At least, it's more than for C++, and there IS a C++ WikiProject...
  • And it's MUCH more than the .NET WikiProject with 82 articles...
  • There is also a Python project and a Ruby project so...
  • Now you can also see a proposal for the Java Portal (temp location).'

First off, it is unfortunate that you feel that way. I can understand if you are not happy about your text being removed. However, with that in mind, I think it is important that we are clear about what we are discussing. You said "It takes time to write good content". I'd like to point out that the text you added consisted mostly of adding links to the lumbercartel.ca site in the form of references, which the site does not appear to qualify for under the reliable sources policy, and also posting an opinion referenced by that site. I did provide you with a link to a detailed explanation of why sources may not meet Wikipedia's requirements, and I would have been happy to answer your questions. However, you've indicated that you do not want to read the guideline. How can I help if you do not want to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's rules and policies? --Ckatzchatspy 11:29, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

There was a paragraph at the end of a document discussing theft of service. I put some thought into what to write in a new sentence that I added to the end of that paragraph to complete it because there wasn't really anything tying it all together. In the past when I've tried to make contributions in this manner, I got attitude dumped all over me for not citing a reference, so this time I include a reference to a page that I created on another site that expands on the point of theft-of-service in great detail (complete with examples and some general calculations that show how serious the matter is) which was definitely relevant, and now that's not good enough somehow. This is why I'm frustrated -- directing me to read a very long document with many different reasons wasn't helpful to me.

Wikipedia is a great resource, but these experiences really aren't encouraging me to contribute.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

I need some help to understand what's going on with this because I find it confusing. I did add some references (e.g., government statistics, etc.), and someone else reduced the categories (which was very helpful -- we welcome all the help we get). I don't want this page to be deleted because this is a real organization in Canada, although we're new and much smaller than the American organization in the USA (both of these reasons are primarily why we're not so well known yet). I don't understand what happened here -- I made sure there were sources, and the contents of the article I posted was factual (and some other Wikipedia users even helped to make some improvements to the article as well), etc., and even read the criteria (which was a very confusing document to read, so I don't even know if I've made sense of it properly, but I tried). I asked for some additional information about the "nomination for deletion," but no explanation was provided, and now I find that my article has been replaced with a redirection page. It seems like I'm communicating with a brick wall, and so I've lost confidence in Wikipedia as a helpful resource because I'm beginning to wonder what other useful articles may have been deleted. I have deleted the article Canadian atheists in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policies. The article failed to establish the notability of the subject because it did not demonstrate that the subject has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. (Statistics Canada is not "significant coverage", and the company's own website is not "independent of the subject".) Note that we have a draft process which allows you to get feedback on a revised version of this article before publishing it, if you intend to update the article, I recommend using that process. I just got notification from someone that our page was completely deleted from Wikipedia. Thanks for providing an explanation. We've been active for a few years now, and I'm still at a loss for why our organization does not have a listing while other similar organizations in other countries (e.g., the American Atheists) do. I will look into the draft process, and I hope you can give me some suggestions for getting this straightened out. Unfortunately, this whole experience has left me with a bad impression about Wikipedia as being rather exclusive and arbitrary, but I'm hopeful that the draft process you mentioned will help to rectify this. There does not appear to be any history for the article, so I would have to start building it from scratch if I can't find a backup of it. Is there something special I need to do to retrieve a version from the history? Randolf (talk)
