regd:Thenkalai and Vadakalai

Hi Ravichandar,

To introduce myself i am not an regular editor in the wikipedia, once i was browsing through the internet for information on iyengars , i came accross the wikipedia article and i was shocked and disheartened to see the origin and ethnicity section on thenkalai iyengars, where the community was depicted as if it has evolved by admixing with the non-brahmins,and a particular editor(USER:HARI7478, who had revealed his identity in your talk page) have added citations to reinforce the above said ancestory and arm twisted other reiterating editors ,that he would complain as vandalism . these are my observations or points: Firstly, Aryan Dravidian theory is itself disputable. the editor added that the Vadakalai originated from Indo-Aryan(it is removed now) migrants. Further on the study of genetic on Vadakalai iyengars only samples were taken from Andhra, not from other places particularly Tamil Nadu where there is a large concenteration of population of this community. Secondly, about the origin of Thenkalai community, all the citations were of emperical in nature. those were just an observation of foreign and indian authors(non iyengar) though they were from reputable publications. the same user has quoted in your talk page as "I guess thurston really got confused between vedantacharya & lokacharya" when this was conflicting with his views, even there was a link to the personal pages of Gariyali(opinion only). It is true that Thenkalai community was catholic in nature to accept all the communities in its movement, but didnt disrupt the frame work of casteism, even Ramanuja didn't do that , he opened the gates of philosophy to all without distinction and accepted the equality of all in eyes of God, Thenkalai community accepted his teachings along with the divine outpouring(by Alwars) in region's vernacular languale(Tamil) and revered it, even emphasized its importance over Vedas, this had made many non brahmins to be imbibed in the movement, but not mixing with the Thenkalai Brahmin(thenkalai iyengar) community. thirdly, there are many families or descendants in both the communities sharing same ancestory, which is proof of a recent schism in the community. this division started only because of the differences of opinion and philosophy and does not have root in racial difference. ofcourse, thenkalai has diversified genetic pool then Vadakalai, that also arose because of intermixing of various Brahmin communities who converted to Vaishnavism during Period of Ramanuja. for instance, I am also descendant of a Mayavada(Smartha) Sannyasi who adopted Vaisnavism under the direct influence of Ramanuja,and was his most sincere desciple. Finally, My sincere appeal is to allow only a neutral person to edit the iyengar article and not those persons who have personal vendetta and prejudice.One point i want to clear is , i didn't oppose any other section of the article except the "Origin and Ethnicity" of Thenkalai Iyengar, as it was done with an ulterior motive to mar a community and which is definitely false. I request you to check with the reliable and authoritarian person belonging to both the community and edit article appropriately as i am a novice and one time editor. Thanks for removing some of the scathing materials in the article and i believe you would empathize with my views , as the worst thing is to twist the ancestory of any individual with dignity. I don't understand why you are fighting over claims of a non-Brahmin ancestry; what is wrong in having one! It is no use having age-old ideas of caste purity, etc; it is time to move forward. Anyway, I found the term "admixing" conveying a sense of insensitiveness and that's why I removed it. I am sorry that you mistook me, i am not fighting for claims of non-Brahmin ancestry on base of prejudice. my concern was that ancestry was tweaked and as an average person, i should retort to that claim, as a person from that community i cant allow these types of false claims. Regarding these pages, there is not much to cover about other than the temples in those places(without the temple, the place is irrelevant; most temple names are the village names). Rather than creating 2 line content or duplicates, i find it relevant to add in the same page. I am also in the process of linking unused photos/places in the region. It would be relevant to split the contents if the details grow. Most of the search would be for the place for temples primarily. A new person looking for the temple in Thirubuvanam wont be searching for karakateswarar temple.

Temples around kumbakonam,Tanjore is set to have temples around them in a radius of 20km. There may be atleast a 100-120 famed ones. This is added to ease searching. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ssriram mt (talk • contribs) 12:05, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

There needs to be categories first and then when it overshoots, we can divide. It can be an encyclopedia or a travel guide, but ultimately a store for info. So it is all oriented towards usage.

Check with the villages around tanjore info - most of them are one liners, hardly serving any purpose. These villages derive their name only from the temples and hence it should be the other way round.

I dont want to continue discussion here and can create fresh pages in the mean time. But just for your info, the warning of blocking user is pretty much overboard. Srikanth posted just when i modified and the message was obtained only after i completed editing others. I havent modified anything after that. We are overrun by the english history of what we see in history books. If you have time, simply refer to some of the verses from project madurai on tevaram/periya puranam. Most of the places were either non-existent before 7th century - there is specific mention about places in thiruthondar puranam(periya puranam). Each village was segregated only by the presence of lingam(swayambu in most cases) and Cholas built mighty temples around Cauvery delta. Tiruchirapalli -> Trichonoploy -> Tirusinapuram is one practical example. Pandanallur(pandanai originally) was evolved by campantar and so is sivapuram - aren't the names too obvious. I am not bringing religious angle here, but that is the history of the places. Villages with no known deities were named after features - like kookur, nallur, <>puram etc.

Leaving arguments aside, i will build specific pages for the temples. In fact, i am looking for photos from some of your uploads/archives. I will revert the ones i loaded with the template. Ssriram mt (talk) 22:46, 26 July 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt

Article request

I have been reading articles about places and temples in India. I find it fascinating, but many articles use words that I do not know. They are likely words related to Hinduism, but they are unfamiliar to me. Some examples are Theerthavari and Guptha Gangai. Could you create articles for some of these more common words so that others can click on them to get better meaning from articles on Hinduism? "Theertham" is a Sanskrit word which means "water". It is used to refer anything holy from consecrated water which is given by priests in Vaishnavite temples to sacred tanks which are located within a temple's precincts. I confess that I'm, myself, not so knowledgeable about Hindu religious terms. Anyway, I will try to create articles for some, provide I find reliable published sources. But are you sure that such articles don't conflict with WP:NOT#DICT?-The Enforcer_{Office of the secret service} 02:47, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

You're right. I too observed that on many occasions.
