Hello!
editHello I'm John Riedl. I'm a professor in the computer science and engineering department at the University of Minnesota. I lead the GroupLens research group in studying how computer tools can help social web sites like Wikipedia be even better! You can read some of our research at [1], or more about me at [2].
Welcome to Wikipedia!
editDear Riedl: Welcome to Wikipedia, a free and open-content encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy contributing. To help get you settled in, I thought you might find the following pages useful:
- Five Pillars of Wikipedia
- Community Portal
- Frequently Asked Questions
- How to edit a page
- How to revert to a previous version of a page
- Tutorial
- Copyrights

Don't worry too much about being perfect. Very few of us are! Just in case you are not perfect, click here to see how you can avoid making common mistakes.
If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}}
on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.
Wikipedians try to follow a strict policy of never biting new users. If you are unsure of how to do something, you are welcome to ask a more experienced user such as an administrator. One last bit of advice: please sign any discussion comment with four tildes (~~~~). The software will automatically convert this into your signature which can be altered in the "Preferences" tab at the top of the screen. I hope I have not overwhelmed you with information. If you need any help just let me know. Once again welcome to Wikipedia, and don't forget to tell us about yourself and be BOLD! Kuru talk 21:46, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Apologies for the belated welcome. Another editor and I have left responses to your query at anglerfish, just in case you don't have it on your watchlist. Great catch. Again, please let me know if there are any questions I can answer for you. Kuru talk 21:46, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
WP:Research last call for cleanup before an RFC
editI'm messaging you about this because you are listed as a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Research. PiperNigrum and myself are about to start the (poorly documented) process of submitting WP:Research for review by the community and I'm making one last call for cleanup and input. Please give the article a careful read if you have a chance. Unless major flaws are discovered, we'll be adding the {{rfc}} template to the talk page to start the process on March 2nd. That's one week from this posting. --EpochFail(talk|work) 22:33, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Added template for SuggestBot
editHi,
Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.
We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.
We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.
If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 16:13, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

editI understand based on public notices that User:Riedl has died of melanoma. I appreciate his having contributed to our community even thought I never met him. I noticed also in his user contributions that among his last edits was information that he added to the article on melanoma. Thank you for having been with us.
