Truman FAR

Hi Rlevse - Comments have been made by several editors at the Truman FAR (Wikipedia:Featured article review/Harry S. Truman/archive1) on further work that is needed before the article is kept as a FA. I understand that you may be annoyed that these comments were not made during the time the article was in the FAR section, but they have been made now and need to be addressed if the article is to be kept. I hope you are interested in doing more work on the article, as the efforts you have put into the article so far have already improved it hugely. Thanks! Contributor's apparent conflict of interest

An article about a company, Envision EMI, LLC has been repeatedly and substantially modified by an individual with an apparent conflict of interest. I have reverted some of his edits and re-added content with a request to discuss further edits on the talk page. In the past few days he has again removed content that in my opinion progressively erodes the content. For example, this edit reduces content about legal allegations, and the edit summary suggested the information was adequately covered in a later section. The contributor then further reduced that later section here. In another example, the contributor has two or three times removed, without discussion, a well-sourced statement by a former employee that goes to the heart of the legal allegations. ("She said the company extended the enrollment period during 2008 to capitalize on the public's excitement about Obama's inauguration.")

I asked the user on April 9 to disclose whether or not a COI exists and have not received a response. He continues to make what appear to be NPOV edits. Details can be found on the talk page here.

Since I've been trying to work with the user for a period of several weeks, perhaps I am too close to the situation. Thanks for taking a look. -- btphelps (talk) (contribs) 15:30, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi

Thanks for the understanding (BTW, you signed with the wrong number of tildes). I just know if I carry on in that particular debate at the moment I'll end up tearing someone off a strip without it being strictly necessary. What I would just point out is that I came to the page as a reader, not an editor, and that's where my comments are for the most part coming from. If you ever pop into Escouts say hi - I'm (almost) always less grumpy there than on here :) DuncanHill (talk) 01:58, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Frederic Chopin

Hello. I am seeking assistance in resolving this matter. If you review the entire talk page for the Chopin article, you can see that the issue of whether the lead should refer to Chopin as Polish, French, or some combination thereof has not been settled. I have attempted to revive the discussion, but it has devolved into personal attacks. It also appears to me that there are two agenda driven editors who are misinterpreting wiki-guidelines to suit their agenda. Please advise.THD3 (talk) 12:23, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Can you help me with an anonymous anti-Semite

Hi. I left the following messages for JRosenzweig yesterday. However, I now see he has not been active since the 20th. So I am asking you as another bureaucrat if you can look into it. Thanks:

this is the ofending edit. I realize that when it comes to anonymous users there is very little one can do, nothing if it is an internet cafe. But I also know in some cases anon IP addresses can be traced to a private service or someone who controls access and can identify the offending individual and take appropriate action.

I have a pretty thick skin and don't care whether the offnsive talk is kept, struck out, or reverted. But I think this individual has exhausted his or her right to use our talk pages to offend. Are you able to find out if it IS possible to identify an actual individual and stop them?

Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 00:02, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

PS I suspect that this new user is the anonymous user who insulted me, above. Slrubenstein | Talk 17:32, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

You're asking for someone with CU rights, not crat rights, but I have both, so it's okay. I may not get to this tonight, but I promise I will ASAP, okay? RlevseTalk 19:16, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate it. I was not sure what the appropriate approach would be but figured a bureaucrat would know. I'll leave a message for JRosenzweig not to worry about it. Thanks. Slrubenstein | Talk 20:10, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Gibraltar Case Comments

I just wanted to bring to your attention a few things on the Gibraltar case.

1. When I was having problems I said some regrettable things, which I have apologised for, if you still feel a topic ban is appropriate then I'm not going to argue about it. I just make the point that bans and blocks are supposedly preventative not punitive. I made those remarks whilst in a bad place, they haven't been repeated and they're out of character. Now that I am a lot better is it still appropriate?

2. The assertion that the self-governing status of Gibraltar is an "opinion" not a fact. Sorry but I cannot accept that remaining in the case. Gibraltar is self-governing, it is a fact that the Spanish editors could not dispute. Instead they have tried to use a combination of synthesis and original research to try and minimise the status in the article. Their motivation in doing so is based on Spanish nationalism toward Gibraltar, where it is portrayed as a British colony on stolen Spanish soil. Those comments are only serving to buttress Spanish nationalism to skew the POV of the article not to achieve NPOV. I think you're being incredibly naive if you feel those remarks are helpful in steering the dispute, I can see those remarks coming back to haunt you in various nationalist disputes.

3. When this case was started, I couldn't participate fully as my father was ill and another editor was hospitalised. The evidence produced by a number of editors who've effectively held the article hostage was directed toward removing editors they disagreed with by topic bans; you'll note that I didn't propose of suggest any blocks/bans/sanctions against individuals. Effectively what you're proposing is to remove one side but leave the other intact. You're rewarding editors for baiting others into uncivil remarks.

4. In reading your comments I can only conclude you have apparently disregarded the workshop. In the workshop there was case of RHoPF hounding editors, walls of text being put up to derail discussion by Ecemaml, non-apologies such as "I'm sorry you were offended by my joke" not to mention examples of bad faith and uncivil remarks:

[3] activity, obstinacy, discourtesy, incompetence at communication, and nationalism form a demonic combination
[4] "Gibnews' rottweiler" repeated [5]

[6] I get a sense of "if I'm going down I'm taking you with me" here.
[7] So that is three untruths in the same section from you, Why are you telling untruths here, Justin?

5. In the workshop, the editors were lobbying to have my conduct examined more fully. I would still welcome that.

6. This was never an arbcom case, there had been no previous attempt at long term solutions. I can only note my bitter disappointment that arbcom would punish one group of violators while allowing another group of violators to go free without even a token slap or even have their conduct examined at all. Particularly an editor who apparently delights in teasing and tormenting those with temporary mental problems. I've seen this editor hounding people for years and I can't believe he is going to get away with it again.

The solution you're proposing might reduce conflict, well if you ban only one side then what's left can violently agree on skewing the POV of the article. What it isn't is a long term solution, I did propose something like this some time ago [8], it would be more workable. Justin talk 09:50, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to   Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to   ThinkBlue (submissions) and   Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants   Stone (submissions) and   White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! Don't take that bullying, imperial, confederate tone with me.

The editor you've decided to support tried to intimidate me with a idiotic notice and start an edit war because he wanted to impose his conferderate point of view on an article of great significance - namely the genocidal Congo Free State.

In future, do yourself a favour and familiarize yourself with the issue before jumping to conclusions!

Note re Lar/Polargeo

The situation between Lar and Polargeo, similar to the situation between Lar and Stephen Shultz is escalating. Here is the sequence of events:

  1. Polargeo adds some views to the uninvolved admin section.
  2. Lar moves these and adds one of his own views.
  3. Polargeo reverts this, accidentally removing Lar's view.
  4. Hipocrite returns Lar's view.
  5. Lar move's polargeo's view again, and threatens to block Polargeo if he returns his view.

Lar was asked to stop removing views on his talk page and instead take a lower-drama action of noting his problems on the page by me, seconded by Thparkth.

This is rapidly spiriling out of control and needs emergy Arbcom intervention to prevent further disruption. I have asked both Lar and Polargeo to stop. Perhaps the individual who choses to stop first should be rewarded, as opposed to losing by default. Just a thought. Hipocrite (talk) 14:25, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

On an observation...

Word. Orderinchaos 08:53, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank you and question

I am fairly stupid. I've been on Wikipedia for a while and still don't understand the whole place. There are still things that I am discovering.

One is what you mentioned.

I think that Finland is preferred to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland

When using diffs, one has to use a URL (http....). So how do I do the following hypothetical example.

...this editor is a ___ when he or she did this http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Finland&action=historysubmit&diff=364995480&oldid=364936557

What should I actually do to get that padlock like you mentioned? Do I cut and paste that diff then manually change it to http://secure.wikipedia.or then the rest? I think I deserve the "Idiot's Barnstar: Awarded to ___ for being in Wikipedia for a while but still remains clueless to many of the edit features" Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 16:22, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Don't worry, I'm still learning new stuff here. It took me about two years just to learn the basics. Yes, Finland is preferred to [10] or Finland. To get the secure padlock, you have to use the secure wiki server, not the regular one. I know en.wiki and Commons have secure servers, not sure about the other wikis. This is en.wiki's secure login and this is the one for Commons. Let me know if you have more questions. RlevseTalk 19:04, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

I still don't understand. Let's use a real life example.

Rlevse, there's an IP editor that did this to the Finland article. See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Finland&action=historysubmit&diff=364193201&oldid=364193064

According to your message, the "Finland" part is ok as it doesn't use a URL. How about the diff? Do I need to manually add a padlock symbol next to it, like this?

Rlevse, there's an IP editor that did this to the Finland article. See https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Finland&action=historysubmit&diff=364193201&oldid=364193064

Oh, I think I may understand now. Diffs are fine. It's just for articles and pages within WP, use the article name in brackets, like Finland. WP:N, etc. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 20:37, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is   Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by   Hunter Kahn (submissions),   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and   White Shadows (submissions) respectively.

Two of last year's final 8,   Theleftorium (submissions) and   Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to   White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Prep 2

Shouldn't the two moth articles not be right by each other? Joe Chill (talk) 00:22, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

didn't notice that. I'll move number 2 toward the bottom. RlevseTalk 00:25, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
What I've noticed at DYK the past couple months (this is an issue on everyone) is that everyone takes the hooks right at top that are verified, rather than trying to clear the backlog, and as a result there are articles from nearly 3 weeks ago still hanging around. Yes, I see you're making preps for the queue, which is good. I just don't see the fairness or point in promoting a hook added the 31st when there are ones so old still sitting there. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 00:40, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
DUDE, there were only 7 left, I was taking ALL of them. I've done FIVE queues in less than a day! and you do this without a word? And you accuse me of causing backlogs? Plus dozens of approvals I've done. What is up with that? Go approve more hooks or delete the bad ones if you want May 12/13 etc off the board. RlevseTalk 00:42, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Geez. you caused this mess. You go fix. I'm done after a mere one day in DYK hooks. RlevseTalk 00:44, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
The only way to move old hooks to the preps is to verify them yourself and then move them to the preps right away. I've been doing that recently and it's annoying. Maybe more people (especially complainers like yourself) should verify them. Joe Chill (talk) 00:46, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
I have been verifying them. Did you read the post and watch my edits? You're the complainers. I've done most of the work there in the last 24 hours and no one gives a shit. Not to mention Wiz was rv'ing me WHILE I WAS WORKING on it WITHOUT ONE WORD TO ME. You guys want DYK to yourselves, you got it. Good riddance.RlevseTalk 00:50, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

List of editors who had more than one DYK listing on the same day

Thanks for updating the frontpage and my talkpage with two DYK credits. Wow, what a coincidence! PFHLai and I have double DYKs on the same day! Maybe I should create List of editors who had more than one DYK listing on the same day - I would be listed twice. I bet there are other editors who have the same distinction. I already have the screenshot and will upload it to Wikicommons later. ----moreno oso (talk) 12:23, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Cool. Was that for two articles mentioned in the same hook or two totally different hooks and topics. RlevseTalk 12:43, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Source of Richard Tregaskis Photo

Hi! In response to your query: If this is the photo you mean:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tregaskis.jpg

I scanned it out of an old edition of Tregaskis's book Guadalcanal Diary, in which the photo was ID'ed as an official US Marines photo (and thus I assumed in the public domain). I also enhanced the photo digitally on my personal PC.

If you need the exact edition of Guadalcanal Diary from which the photo came, and its year of publication, please let me know. . . .

Sincerely,

Greetings and Humble Request

Hi Rlevse,

I think we've run into each other on some scouting-related pages. I was wondering you'd be interested in "admin-coaching" me. I'd promise not to get in your hair, but maybe undertake some projects you'd like to see done -- I'm sure you have things you wish you could get to if you had time. If not, no worries, I realize this request is kind of like trying to ask a Fortune 500 executive for business advice. Regards. jheiv (talk) 08:07, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Being an arb, I'm not sure I have time for this to do the job the way it should be done. If it helps, here's the mill I used to use for coachees: User:Rlevse/AC. Ask Gadget850 to coach you. RlevseTalk 10:27, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks -- That is a great resource (and has been added to my bookmarks)! Anyway, I went ahead and asked Gadget -- sorry for the awkward intrusion. jheiv talk contribs 20:35, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Composing DYK preps

Just a note without intent to sound rude - please try to avoid more than one hook on the same topic (say 2x baseball) in one set, and find a "quirky" hook for the last hook (DYK tradition). Sure, it is not easy these days due to reviewing problems. Materialscientist (talk) 23:33, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

OK. RlevseTalk 23:35, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
One more thing: some of your DYK image protection was too short - it takes time for the set to get to the main page, +6 hrs, +some admins (like me: ) might swap queues. I usually protect for 3 days (on en.wiki. Can't protect on commons). You might have your ideas, as it is certainly a different story when we protect a copy on en.wiki or original on the shared commons project. Materialscientist (talk) 22:25, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Two days should be plenty. I'll do them all for 2 days or maybe even three. Thanks for the tips. RlevseTalk 00:12, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you!!!

Thank you very much, for awarding me my own day! I always wanted one of those!

Jerome Tiger DYK

I nominated this article for a DYK, but unfortunately I was off-wiki when a problem arose with the hook being edited out of the article. I notified the author about the DYK nom, but apparently he didn't monitor the situation, so unfortunately the hook problem was never rectified. I see that you disapproved it.[12]. I was wondering if it's too late to salvage this DYK? He's a well known Native American artist, and I think this problem is fixable. Also I see that an illustration was added, which might be usable too.ScottyBerg (talk) 12:28, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Pls post the diff of where I disapproved it here and then list here what you think the best version of the hook is and I'll look at it. RlevseTalk 15:02, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
The diff is actually posted above.[[13]] There are any number of possible hooks, but I'd suggest perhaps ". . . that Jerome Tiger (1941-1967), a Native American painter from Oklahoma, was a high school dropout and worked as a laborer and prize fighter?"
Thanks very much. ScottyBerg (talk) 18:32, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I like this hook. I've put it in a prep queue with the image but we're not sure the image really is PD. Do you know if the artist released it or can verify PD status? If it's not PD we can use the hook without the image. RlevseTalk 20:04, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
The image is from Commons and is claimed to be released into the public domain. So, assuming that can be taken in good faith, this would be a usable (and very nice) PD image. ScottyBerg (talk) 20:34, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm not so sure that'll be enough. Recent art is often not PD. People upload things with wrong licenses all the time to Commons.RlevseTalk 22:09, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
If it's dubious then I'd suggest leaving it out. I'm not clear what the basis is for the claim made by the uploader. ScottyBerg (talk) 23:48, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I have an image expert looking at itRlevseTalk 23:53, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I hope it's OK. If the picture has to be removed from Commons it would be a shame. ScottyBerg (talk) 00:20, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
If the first time it was published in the US was before 1978 and it was published without a copyright notice, then it is PD. That's not likely something that can be determined without a lot of research (calling the museum to see if they have any information, etc) so probably we would only be able to use it under a claim of fair use. --B (talk) 01:36, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Hmm.RlevseTalk 01:47, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
On Commons there's a claim it's in the public domain. However, the user who uploaded it seems to have had some files deleted, so it's not clear that this user had a proper basis for making that claim. ScottyBerg (talk) 02:18, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
In the tag on Commons, the uploader claims to be the author. I think we can pretty safely ignore that tag and assume it was uploaded under our "pick a random tag" program. --B (talk) 03:39, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
He prob took a photo of it, not realizing rules for artwork are different. I'm not overly familiar with those rules, so that's why I'm asking. Should we IFD this on Commons? I've asked him to comment here.RlevseTalk 11:00, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
I would just strike the license and tag it as whatever the Commons equivalent of {{subst:nld}} is. I would say it's highly unlikely that it's PD or, if it is, finding the "American Indian Artists Annual" that the article about him says his early paintings were published is probably not something likely to happen. --B (talk) 12:36, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
I noticed the "author" bit, but I sort of clung to the belief that there was some basis for it. Wishful thinking on my part. By the way, it may be helpful if the author of the article would weigh in on this. He seems to be an expert in Native American subjects and may have more light to shed on the painting's copyright status. I'll drop a line on his talk page to alert him to this discussion. ScottyBerg (talk) 14:17, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
I just photographed the painting from a public collection, but it would be easy to write a fair use rationale for its use. -Uyvsdi (talk) 18:29, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Uyvsdi
FU can not be on commons, nor can they be used for DYK since it'll be on the main page. Pls move to en wiki, write an FU for it. Then let me know and I'll delete it from commons. RlevseTalk 18:33, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Why not just remove the image from the article for now until myself or someone can figure out the fair-use rationale. Articles get DYK without images all the time. Or perhaps someone has a photograph of the artist (maybe there's a government source). -Uyvsdi (talk) 18:37, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Uyvsdi

Already removed from DYK. Download it from commons, upload to en, make fu, let me know. It should only take 5 mins. I could just delete it from commons but it's easier for you to do your part first. RlevseTalk 18:47, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Okay, have uploaded it to WP, replaced it in the article, and have drafted a fair use rationale. Please feel free to delete the image from the commons. -Uyvsdi (talk) 19:05, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Uyvsdi
Done. RlevseTalk 19:10, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Kaja Bordevich Ballo

Thank you for telling me that the article about Kaja Bordevich Ballo was so successful. Unfortunately I doubt if I can contribute that way in future. The next time I edit any Scientology article at Wikipedia Scientologists will probably get me banned from editing those articles permanently. I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong as nobody can read and understand all the complex Wikipedia rules but fighting the Wikipedia justice system is sometimes frustrating and very difficult. Don’t try and fight Scientologists here unless you have supporters behind you.

I wrote the above but was accidentally logged out. Proxima Centauri (talk) 09:14, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Wiki can be frustrating. Take a break if need be but please remain the good editor you are.RlevseTalk 10:15, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't need a break, I need justice. I don't think the arbitration against me was just, partly the decision was unjust because no Wikipedian can possibly read, understand and learn all the rules. Further the decision was unjust because the decision was taken overnight when I was asleep before I had time to prepare a proper defence. I found out that I would face arbitration in mid evening, I made a preliminary start at a defence and decided to sleep over it before working out my defence properly. The following morning the decision had already been taken.

The relevant information is here and here.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Scientology/History Article Project may or may not be any good, I don’t know.

When I warned you not to try and fight Scientology without supporters I didn’t know that you are strong enough to fight them but you stand a better chance with supporters. Proxima Centauri (talk) 17:32, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

At the moment I'm writing about Scientology here where my contributions are valued. I suspect users like Cirt need to understand that they can harm Wikipedia if they deter valuable contributors. Proxima Centauri (talk) 18:53, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the issue was refusal to abide by WP:RS and WP:V, after warnings and notices about this problem. So far there is only the warning, no restrictions exist on this user's edits, and hopefully the user has learned more about WP:RS and WP:V. -- Cirt (talk) 19:59, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Sure. RlevseTalk 22:44, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Sorry

Sorry, but why not inuse it then? How am I supposed to know when you're done? If it's the "save" edit summary, I'm going to have to let you know that you very often leave reviewrs with much work to do after that - fr example, you never seem to notice the redundant )pictured) in non-pictured hooks. Things catch my eye, and I edit quickly, because of the risk that the queue will be saved with errors. Dahn (talk) 23:22, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Never? Hardly. I remove lots of them. Do I miss some yes. Ever thought of looking at edit times? And I rarely stop a prep area without filling all the slots. We have reviewers for a reason but you should have the courtesy to wait till its filled. DYK should be a nice quiet area to work in but many avoid it like the plague because it's amazingly hostile to newcomers. No wonder so many people won't go anywhere near it.RlevseTalk 23:25, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Here's the problem: I have no idea when a prep will be "finished" beforehand; it may take minutes, it may take hours, and it only takes minutes until it's moved to the queues, where a problem becomes horribly hard to check and solve. If your expectation is that I refrain myself from performing quick fixes on issues that others may miss (and do miss) and be around at the precise moment you're done filling the prep, I'm afraid we have different interpretation of what courtesy is. Then again, I don't really see how and what any of my edits have affected in your editing, other than that you may have had a minor edit conflict for a couple of seconds - which comes with the office. Other than these non-essential details, I don't see the point of this debate, nor do I understand why we'd be discussing how friendly the place should be. Dahn (talk) 23:40, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Sigh. Then there's not much hope. RlevseTalk 23:50, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Of? Do you think I'm disrupting your activity, and doing so on purpose? I began by saying I'm sorry, but most of what happens is to be expected under any circumstances: neither I or you have unlimited time to spend on waiting for each other. I respect you and what you're doing, but what more do you frankly expect me to do, given the circumstances? Dahn (talk) 00:03, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Just for the record, it's the usual practice to use the {{inuse}} template when filling the queue. It's not compulsory but if you don't use it others are inclined to make their own additions as you have discovered Rlevse. The "unwritten rule", if you like, is that if you don't use the template, you are inviting others to help you assist with the update. Hope that helps clarify things. Apart from that, I would just like to add that I very much regret any impression you may have had Rlevse that DYK is "hostile" to new contributors, I think we all appreciate the assistance but sometimes the regulars forget to mention that. Gatoclass (talk) 11:04, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank you and I'll try to keep all this in mind.RlevseTalk 11:49, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the diffs. I have taken a look at them, but I really think it would be best if I didn't get involved in this little fracas. I was hoping perhaps that an initial tactful intervention might prevent tempers getting further frayed, but as it appears that hope was misplaced, it might be best if I bowed out of the picture as I have no desire to take sides and potentially exacerbate the situation. If there really is a behavioural problem here, I think that will become clear enough in time, right now it just seems to me this is a fairly minor thing that has perhaps been blown a little out of proportion and I think it would be best if everyone just tried to put it behind them. Cheers, Gatoclass (talk) 11:27, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Re: user:Dahn

While on user:Dahn to discuss an issue he had with my DYK nom of Juan Jose Carbó, I noticed your conversation above the one I started and felt we had similar experiences with this editor. I felt that he was a bit insensitive to my nom and on my talkpage in these series of DIFFs where he basically admitted he doesn't look at the full nom (to verify hooks) and seems mainly focused on commenting "on the problems as they show on T:TDYK" when he "has a nom". In essence, I told him that he had twice taken me to task on the talkpage and that he should treat other editors' noms like I am sure he wants his noms treated. He didn't see it that way and the conversation rapidly went downhill with him reverting our comments on his talkpage. I don't know if language plays a factor for this editor but he doesn't seem to realize that he should be "more helpful" on the the DYK nom page versus actively looking for issues. The better editors usually "improve" noms when they can and only leave a direct comment when the nom needs serious rework. The best ones use the template to come to the editor's talkage and discuss the issue in private. I know this because I have earned 20 DYKs in the last two months from when I first had an article nominated. I don't know what can be done about this but that editor needs to show more civility on the DYK page. ----moreno oso (talk) 18:57, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I agree with a lot of this and am thinking over my options.RlevseTalk 19:53, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I really agreed with one statement you made about the DYK nom page being almost a select club. If you're "in", you're made like flint. Not, and your noms can languish. I was trying to contribute there until I ran into a wall. This experience with Dahn is not good either but I don't know what can be done because I don't know if just our two experiences would matter. Still, his relevations on my talkpage do seem to show a bias. I feel that if you're going to look at noms, an editor should do so from an WP:AGF attitude that you will do your best to improve the nom if it's workable, the hooks and then approve the nom. ----moreno oso (talk) 20:01, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
You may want to consider starting a thread about this on a DYK talk page or an RFC on that and/or an RFC on Dahn's conduct. RlevseTalk 20:06, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I think it would look better if someone else pointed this out. ----moreno oso (talk) 21:38, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Dahn - your talk page is the place to bring concerns but you dismissed them. Calling that a violation of sanctity is silly. Your edit summaries were exactly what I called them and if you don't see that, that's too bad for your sake. We can talk about whatever we want on my talk page. That being said, I do agree enough is enough, we've both said what we want to say and I don't see a need to pursue it further.RlevseTalk 10:12, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Morenooso, I see no need to (and in fact can't be expected to) follow up on all the wikidrama you're starting over sectarian and sophistical interpretations of politeness - what it has "evolved into" is a set of projections and assumptions on your part, a situation where I'm being marginalized and harassed simply for doing my job as an editor. The one public reply I was able to read so far, which was to Rlevse, clearly tells him that he is blowing something out of proportion. Rlevse, let's be clear about this: my talk page is the place where you called me names, and where I decided not to respond to that line of reasoning, which only made you persist with harangues and threats. Damned if I do, damned if I don't. Feel free to delete this message for reciprocity. Dahn (talk) 14:43, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Sam's Army DYK

Hey Rlevse, this is more of a curious question than a complaint. I nominated Sam's Army for a DYK with a free-licensed picture, but it's in the queue without one. I'm not exactly losing sleep over this, but I was wondering why the picture was cut from the nom? -- Nomader (Talk) 06:44, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Simply because there are too many noms with pics for us to use all of them. On the queues I do I try to use a very diverse set of pics for the lead DYK. If you want to know why yours was one I dropped it was because the people are all far away and you can't see them well in the small DYK frame. I built a queue last night with a close up of a soccer player. RlevseTalk 10:05, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Stephen Brackstone

With regard to the removal of Stephen Brackstone at WP:DYK, I'd like to make it clear that the phrase "taken off" was referring to the substitution of the player and as such the ref does support the hook. This is a common Brit Eng expression for substituting a player (examples that help clarify this are this and this) and for me this misinterpretation is no justification for the removal of the article from the list. Besides, this would confirm the players' subsitution anyway. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 18:37, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Disagreements happen all the time on wiki. It's inherent in the process and I've had my own DYK run ins, but I still enjoy it. Your definition of failure may be different to mine; mostly, I'm happy with researching and editing articles, I have no real desire to "succeed" in any way other than contributing to an article in a way that makes me happy. Good day Rlevse may I respectfully request your kind assistance as an active editor of the Wikipedia article List of United States Naval Academy alumni (legislators) and as the one who worked to have it promoted to featured list on Wikipedia. I would like to include the picture of a noted alumni who had set a record not only during his stay at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis but also made historical impact as a politician and public servant in the Philippines, Congressman Roilo Golez. While at the academy he excelled in academics as a consistent Superintendent's List midshipman, in sports becoming a four-year undefeated academy boxing champion in his weight division setting a record in then more than 100 years of academy boxing, and in leadership having held the position of Company Commander which is a rare distinction for foreign midshipmen. In the Philippines, he had a long and productive career as a public servant having been elected in landslide victories in 1992, 1995, 1998, 2004, 2007, and 2010, serving as Representative of the City of Paranaque in the 9th, 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th Congress of the Philippines and will be serving in the incoming 15th Congress of the Philippines on his unprecedented sixth term in office as a congressman. He is also the President of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, Philippine Chapter and is a Life Member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association. He had also served as the President of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Governor of the Philippine National Red Cross, and President of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines. I had tried to include his picture but was instructed by MBK004 to start a discussion on it first. Thank you very much in advance for your time and invaluable inputs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Congressionalstaff (talkcontribs)

Sir Rlevse thank you very much for your prompt response. May I ask what would be the standard or basis required or observed by the Wikipedia community in placing the photo of a US Naval Academy alumni beside the list, in addition, for an alumni not so included to have his picture also placed beside the list. It would help a lot of people researching on the subject matter to have the picture of the mentioned alumnus right there on the article itself, it is a short list after all and the picture will just be small for which the space beside the table is ample enough to accomodate. At the very least, it could accomodate one more, please. Congressionalstaff (talk) 03:01, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
No need for calling me sir ;-) One thing is that there are already pics there and people really don't like for the row of pics to run below the list of names so. One would have to be swapped out. I suggest you start a chat on the list's talk page, post on MBK's page to see what he says, and see what other people say. Leave the talk open at least a week and we'll see how it's going.RlevseTalk 03:43, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Ok thanks I really appreciate your comments and will do as advised, btw I just checked the article's page again List of United States Naval Academy alumni (legislators) and the list of names now run quite below the row of pics on the side admitting perhaps the placement of two more pics without running below the list of names. I hope this request for one more pic may be given due course by the Wikipedia admins, sysop such as you and the rest of the Wikipedia community. Thanks so much, I'm learning to appreciate the quality and amount of collaborative work that goes into every article on Wikipedia. No wonder it is of the status it is today as a widely used and most visited reference website. Congressionalstaff (talk) 05:16, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

The article was split from the main article with the intention of condensing it like I did with the 1960s and 1970s. Unfortunately somebody nominated it for DYK.... Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:41, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Well Gato disapproved it. So now the main needs compressed to a summary or the fork needs deleted. RlevseTalk 15:49, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

RE: Happy Merovingian's Day!

Hi, I really appreciate the recognition, thanks very much.
Best regards and happy editing! --Merovingian (T, C, L) 01:39, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Update balance

I notice you seem to have prepared a few updates recently with more than four bio hooks. An update should never have more than four bios, unless it's absolutely unavoidable (ie, nothing but bio hooks left). Given that there are plenty of verified hooks at Suggestions ATM, it's not as if there aren't plenty of other hooks to choose from.

And BTW, don't forget to choose a funny/quirky hook for the last slot - I've just noticed a few so-so ones lately, although I don't know whose updates they were. Gatoclass (talk) 05:00, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Recognitions

I put those guys up there because Ed did go ahead and barnstar them. If you want to change to your sig that's cool.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:13, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Ed put them there with his sig, then you changed them to your sig. RlevseTalk 21:43, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

My Appreciation

Hi Rlevse,

Thank you so much for the barnstar! I found it very encouraging. Your "Wikipedian of the day" initiative is a great way of telling other editors that their years of contributions are appreciated. Kudos for promoting cooperation throughout the project.

Happy editing,

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were   Ian Rose (submissions) (A),   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader),   ThinkBlue (submissions) (C)   Casliber (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to   Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn, Fox and The ed17
