You have to make subpages of your user page, such as "User:Kschwerdt514/linkbox", "User:Kschwerdt514/User template", "User:Kschwerdt514/Talk Template", etc. You can copy the code from my pages if you like, but please don't change any of my pages. Look at the templates I'm pulling in on my various pages and you can see how it works. BTW, in the linkbox, you can switch between male.png and female.png. Rlevse 21:47, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Virginia Beach City Public Schools

Hello Rlevse,

I appreciate the recent changes you made to VBCPS articles, including Frank W. Cox High School. However, I do think that instead of the logo or seal, an actual picture of the school building would make more sense, as a photograph is better illustrative of a building tied to an institution that its seal is. I am considering switching back to the actual image of the school, but I'm also looking into methods to display both a picture and a logo, much like in Template:Infobox City.

It is also worth noting that it's highly possible that logos are copyrighted, and with the growing anti-fair-use sentiment on en.wp, it might not be a good idea to use them extensively. —UED77 23:05, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

There is a special image tag for logos that is in wide use, so I see no problem there. I think the VB schools should be consistent and display a logo as that is much more representative of a school that a photo of a building, which almost no one will recognize, so I disagree on that point. Do schools teams wear the logo or a pic of the building? Do the Dallas Cowboys have a star or a pic of their stadium on their helmet? Rlevse 23:22, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

While there is indeed a logo copyright tag based on the fair use rationale, there are ongoing discussions in the Village Pump and on mailing lists about abandoning the use of fair use images and eventually deleting them. However, since there are no problems at the moment, they can stay until that happens. However, regarding the pictures, while I agree with you in that it is primarily the logo that serves to identify the institution, the buildings themselves serve as minor landmarks in their respective cities, and they should be depicted, if not for else then for reference, especially if such pictures are already available, as was the case with Cox.

Most institutions are tied to fixed buildings, say, sporting teams, for example, as they typically play at one specific arena, and are invariably associated with that place. In the case of many big-city teams, the team would have an article, and in most cases, so would the arena, and both articles would mention each other. In the case of schools, where neither the notability nor the availability of infomation warrants to separate articles, care should be made to mention both the institution and the bulding, illustrated, if possible. Yet, I am not expressly seeking to switch the logo for a photo, but rather find a way to display both. —UED77 23:48, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

"Imperfect" that's an understatement. V0.5 has an article on prison experiments. So choice is left to luck of the draw as to which reviewer you get and lower quality B articles are chosen and yet you lose out on FA KEY articles on a highly esteemed achievement? What a farce. As for picture and current event tags I really have no idea, in my field (chemistry) we've seen little of that, and most of my editing work has been trying to raise mediocre articles to A or B-Class, not much with the FA procedure. I quite agree, there are problems with the text in this article too, but I thought it was worth putting it on hold for the images to get sorted out before making a thorough review, on the grounds that if the images don't get sorted out then it's not even in the running. • Found evidence and rewrote best high school in america section
• reordered pictures
• changed the citations for the better
• Discipline and student culture section and some parts of the intro are really the only parts needing work. With a little advice it should easily be a good article.

GA icons and such

Well, you're going about this in the wrong order ;-)

What you should do:

1. Start a central discussion on whether GAs should be marked on the article page. Do not do this on one of the GA pages itself, but rather in an uninvolved location (e.g. Wikipedia:Marking good articles).
2. Advertise the discussion widely on the Village Pump, on related process pages, on the centralized discussions template, on the RFC lists, etc.
3. Wait for a consensus to emerge.
4. Be prepared to compromise if the consensus is against your particular proposal.

In general, I have no particular opinion on whether some tag should be there, but I do think that using the FA star (regardless of the color) is confusing for readers, and suggests a formal relationship between the FA and GA processes that simply isn't there.

On a somewhat related note, two suggestions about making the GA process more palatable to Wikipedia at large:

1. Stabilize the process. The current debate over how disputes should be handled isn't exactly reflecting well on it as something stable enough to be presented so prominently to readers.
2. Try to restrain your supporters from wanton attacks on the FA system (e.g. "FA is waste of time for the majority of articles on wikipedia, GA is a realistic alternative that covers all articles"). If the GA process is viewed as a rebellion against the FA system, or an attempt to suborn the prestige currently associated with FA, many people—particularly people heavily involved in FA writing—who would otherwise be inclined to let it live will be spurred into opposing it at every step.

I visited the island earlier this year, and picked up a few things including the booklet "Why Brownsea" which has a lot of detail about the camp (a full page for each day of the camp, plus copies of B-P's correspondence etc.) The Scouting Milestones page also has a lot of info. Eagle Scout

I saw you added yourself to the list of Eagle Scouts, which I don't mind since you are a poet of some note, but a bio I read on you said you grew up in Canada, so how then did you earn Eagle Scout? I grew up on an American Airforce Base Ernest Harmon Air Force Base and was in Troop 6 there. After moving to Woodstock, Ontario in 1965 I became a US Lone Scout (along with my brother Cris) and in 1968 I received both my Eagle Scout and Queen's Scout while attending Troop 11 in Woodstock Ontario. I have some old records somewhere or they might be in my archives collection at York University. Google wouldn't have a search on it as I never encorporated scouting into my web pages for searches. Rlevse...believe it or not, I didn't do it for the Scouting project. I am sorting the User templates category and decided to sort out the Scouting ones into their own Category. Unfortunately, it didn't help much in cleaning out the parent as I had hoped.

Please stress to your Scouting contributors that all Scouting related user templates go into the more specific category from here on out. Put a link to it on the project page as well so that it gets more visablity.

Scouting in Connecticut

Hello Rlevse,

Thank you for the input. I've corrected them. I have a question for you on the format. Most Scouting in articles contain very little regarding past councils, camps and lodges. The suggested format that you list the council and include the camp and lodge makes sense until you hit Connecticut where I think I found every council, every camp and every lodge. Does it make sense to list the three as I did or combine the three together. If combined, Camp Sequassen could be listed under 4 councils and where would the history go? To the last council? I've asked other folks, on an informal basis for their suggestions but received nothing back. I have more info to add, hopefully over the next several weeks. Medal of Honor - FA

I appreciate your comment about the Medal of Honor article. It was added to the Military history WikiProject announcements, but it hasn't had a lot of edits to it. I agree that it would be a shame to see it lose the FA status. I am not an expert on the history of the award, so, I have more questions than answers; able to help more with form than with content. • Great to know this is an area of expertise for you. I will look to you as a resource on MOH information — which is very pertinent at the moment. Do you know how the medals were attributed during the Civil War? In particular, were members of the militia considered part of the Army when they were awarded the MOH. The example is Joseph H. De Castro. He was part of the 19th Massachusetts Infantry. (The question pertains to who was the U.S. Army's first Hispanic Medal of Honor recipient. David B. Barkley (WWI) received that recognition. All the militia guys got Army MOHs. They certainly didn't get Navy or Air Force MOHs. Now why Barkley was declared the first Hispanic Army MOH, I don't know. Who decided that anyway? My guess no one has put 2 and 2 together much before this that he was or wasn't Hispanic. I just did a quick check and some site list De Castro as Hispanic and some don't, some list him as Army, and some don't, my guess is it's up to the web site maker who is and isn't army, but he for sure got the Army version of the MOH. As for saying a militia guy isn't Army, ridiculous. He is sure not Navy. This page calls him Hispanic and this page says his wife's father was from Spain. My guess he was Hispanic and no one has figured out he was the first yet. Contact the CMOHS about this and you may get a feather in your cap. Rlevse 21:36, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

My dear Rlevse, as usual, it is a great pleasure to hear from you - and in fact, I ws planning to visit you pretty soon as I would like your input on a different matter. But first things first, so let's start by saying that your advice on the Comanche article is much appreciated, and I will follow it in detail - thank you so much! As I didn't write it myself, but rather I simply reviewed its historical and factual accuracy, it'll be kinda hard for me to add the needed footnotes. However, I have interacted with its main authors, and I can ask for their help in the task. There is no hurry - I'd rather have this article checked, doublechecked and improved as much as possible before even thinking about moving on to FAC stage.

At the moment, tho, I'm much more interested in hearing your thoughts regarding the Portal that I've built and currently maintain, Portal:Indigenous peoples of North America. I'm investing much of my time perfecting it, and I know it still has weak areas; the To Do and the Categories sections are not finished yet, tho I feel like the other sections look rather complete already. I've been updating it regularly for about the last month, and so far I've received good feedback from users who have become interested and learned about the subject through it. My main concerns are, do you feel it's ergonomic enough, decently designed, and so on? I've noticed that, for some reason, sometimes a section's frame doesn't display properly; as we speak, the Biographies one is out of shape. What do you think should be improved before moving on to Featured Portal candidates? Please, allow me to thank you in advance for your valuable time, your advices and your help.

For the PS, see the talk page of the project assessment page. For Thailand, they probably didn't know about Chile. Hello. The reason I chose not to place the article on hold is because some of the concerns I had went beyond minor edits/clarifications. If you look at the On Hold section of WP:GA/N, you'll see that the Good Article process is not a substitute for Peer Review. That's why I failed the article instead of placing it on hold.

This is only from the intro and the first section. All picky comments (though I can't imagine being more picky than the FAR). (Feel free to tell me if this is too detailed, too critical, or just more than you care to hear ;-)

Introductory paragraphs

• P1. What it is: It all works.
• P2. Uniqueness: The number of times it has been awarded doesn't fit in this paragraph. Perhaps the numbers should be put in another paragraph — not a long discourse. (Brainstorm — perhaps total numbers, number per conflict, numbers per service branch? )
• P3. Distinguishing it from other awards: There are two types of awards being mentioned here: (1) the other military neck award and (2) civilian awards. The paragraph needs a lead-in sentence to set the stage, rather than just jumping in:

• The Legion of Merit statement seems like it is missing context. First sentence says that MOH is a neck award, as is the LOM (the commander's degree distinction is not at all apparent in context; the reader could go to the LOM article, but they shouldn't have to.) Only neck award for "valor", then what is the LOM for? This needs to be clear. The general public will not immediately distinguish between valor and merit. Perhaps include in the sentence "... for valor — actions taken during combat operations at risk of one's own life that are above and beyond the call of duty — ...."
• Civilian awards — a short lead in. Presidential Medal of Freedom (highest); others with "Medal of Honor" in their name.

Origin section:

• P2, S2: "the idea of a decoration for individual gallantry remained through the early 1800s". What is meant by "remained"? Were there any awards made? Mentioned in the Congressional record or in miliary communiques? Reference. Could it be that: "Although the Badge of Military Merit fell into disuse after the American Revolutionary War, the concept of a military award for individual gallantry by members of the U.S. armed forces had been established. (Took out decoration as the next sentence talks about the Certificate of Merit and then the Certificate of Merit Medal.
• P3, S2: "such a medal did enter service in the Navy". Is "enter service" the correct terminology? Would it be correct to say that:

"Scott did not approve the proposal for a U.S. Army award. However, such an award was established for the Navy when Public Resolution 82 that provided for a Navy Medal of Valor, which came to be called the Medal of Honor, was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on 21 December 1861." ... put the name at the end of the paragraph, as both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army awards took the name Medal of Honor.

From some of the citations, it seems that the legislation for both had the terminology "medals of honor" in them, not as a title, but as a descriptor. When was the official name of "Medal of Honor" given? This reference indicates that the name was established within a year of the USN and USA medals being authorized. Consider the inclusion of the "medals of honor" phrase of the legislation in the quotes about who is eligible.

It could be browser dependent. Here at work I only have IE, at home I have IE and FF. I fixed the merit badge one (for IE at least). I compared the first versions with the template in IE and FF, and only IE had a problem with white space. Good to know that this could be a problem. I LIKE the shorter template (makes better use of space), but in the case of MB History, it doesn't make much difference because it is the long TOC that is causing the Right Hand side white space now. A longer template would just flow down alongside the TOC. I'll check the other pages to see what effect the template is having in IE. --NThurston 16:46, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I see that you're making some progress with experimentation. You can use the samples as the logo image for the series template, but I haven't figured out how to include the caption and still have it look decent. For now, there's a template just for History of merit badges (Boy Scouts of America) that is called "BSAseriesMBHistory". It looks just like this one, only it as another image below the box and above the portal tag. I think I have a better solution - I modified the BSAseries template to allow for a "lowbox". It is intended that the lowbox variable would be another template. So I created a new template - Template:MBHistory that I believe better displays what you had in mind. This approach keeps a single "series" template (only one thing to edit), plus it allows more flexibility in how the lowbox info would be presented - images, text, etc. I believe you will like this better. --NThurston 17:40, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

As for white space underneath the portal tag, I have looked at that, and it's not caused by the series template, but by the TOC. Articles that have short lead-ins and short TOCs do not have that problem. USS Simpson

Actually there is a reason I reverted the Simpson article. If you check the edit history, the article has been mercilessly edited by someone adding tons of vanity entries and essentially unimportant information based on his stint on the ship. Because of this, I reverted to a version prior to his edits, so that I can go back later and re-add info that is actually relevant. Because of his editing style, it is simpler just to get rid of his edits and start again. For instance, you have reverted to a version where the editor has inserted his own name into the article and the format is completely wrong.--Nobunaga24 01:45, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

13th Dublin and 14th Dublin

I merged these into Scouting in Rathfarnham as the article on 14th Dublin is copyed and pasted from the article 13th Dublin. This seems to have touched a nerve and I have now been accused of vandalism (?!) by User:Jorgenpfhartogs when I am merely trying to ensure that there are no Scouting articles with identical content! Well, it's obvious people are watching those two articles. Rebelguys2, a project member, offered good advise on Scouting in Rathfarnham talk page. You should mention it is Scouting project policy not to have articles on local units, but to group them as you're trying. Local unit articles usually don't have enough info to stand on their own and not get deleted or merged. If they do exist, they need enough of their own material and to be notable in some way. I'm not an expert on Irish Scouting, so I can't tell you if both should be fully merged into Scouting in Rathfarnham, but I can tell 14th and 15th should be merged into one article at a minimum. Contact User:ERCheck about a move (he's in MILHIST, but a friend of mine and an admin). Also, I did not see a merge tag on 13th or 14th, which meant no one got notice as far as I can tell. You could put a merge tag on 14th, list your reasons, and then ask for votes on our project page. Chris (Kintetsubuffalo) has lots of experience with Scouting mergers, You can ask him too. The 14th and 13th units are two complete separate units. They are both based in Rathfarnham and the 14th was established by leaders of the 13th but since then they have very different histories. There are 4 more units in Rathfarnham so an article about Scouting in Rathfarnham should not include the history of the 13th and the 14th but should be a more general artical. Merging 14th Dublin and 13th Dublin would insinuate they are thesame unit, which they clearly are not. I'm an active leader in the 13th Dublin unit and therefore do not know anything of the history of the 14th Dublin since it was established. I also can't tell you more about the other 3 units, but I've requested info from them as to write an article about Scouting in Rathfarnham.

I've rewritten the page about Scouting in Rathfarnham a bit since the history of the 13th Dublin is not the sole history of Scouting in that area. I'm looking for more info on the other troops. By my knowledge there were/are 6 troops: 13th Dublin, 14th Dublin, 31st Dublin, 68th Dublin, Rathfarnham Girl Guides and a troop in Ballyboden that no longer exists. I've contacted the leaders I know of all troops in the area (Mountpellier Scout County and Three Rock Scout County) to enlighten me with any info they might posses. I beg all of you to leave the 13th Dublin and 14th Dublin articles intact.I will receive more info about the 14th soon so I'll be able to continuee their history from the moment they became a separate unit.I also started articles on the Scout Provinces in Ireland. 13th Dublin

The 13th has a very long and interesting history and we have enough material two fill 2 books In fact, there are already 2 books written about the history of the unit and the unit is mentioned in a lot of local history studies. I could write at least 200 pages about the history but I do agree that is not the case for each unit. In some cases an article for each unit would not be appropiate but in this case is fully believe that the history of the 13th does not belong in the article Scouting in Rathfarnham. When I looked, the writing of both 14th and 13th were very similar, that's why I said that. And as I said, unit level articles need to be complete and able to stand alone; if you can make that happen, great. We have the (general) policy about local unit articles because they tend to be left as stubs and get deleted. Usually, merging them into a regional article saves their info. BPSA

I just talked to some people in Baden Powell Scouts Association and they asked me to edit the articles in accordance to their wishes. The IT-officer of Baden Powell scouts Ireland and UK lives close to me so I regulary meet up with him to see how I can edit it to a good article that is approved by Baden Powell Scouts. They wish it to be more like an advertisement while Wiki's policy is NPOV. I just edited the articles and I'm waiting for approval from them and wikipedians. yep, I agree. It's hard to find a raod between advertisement and neutral point of view. as you can from the information BPSA gave me they would like a very cheap form of advertisement. I've explained that things like changing The organisation shares the heritage of the youth Scouting Movement, but was formed in the United Kingdom in 1970 when it was felt that the "modernisation" of the Scout Movement was abandoning the traditions and intentions established by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907. The Baden-Powell Scouts retain the belief that essence of the movement should be based on outdoor activities related to the skills of explorers, backwoodsmen and frontiersmen into just The organisation shares the heritage of the youth Scouting Movement, in the UK and next year will cellebrate 100 years of Scouting would be incorrect and not a neutral point of view. Their point of view makes sense too when they say the article is too much WOSM now and too negative towards BPSA.

I'm in contact now with all 5 organisations (UK & Ireland, US, Canada and Australia) and they all seem to have their own ideas and except for Ireland and UK have no contact with each other like WOSM organisations do. They feel as if the WOSM organistions see them as a competitor and most seem indeed to have negative tendencies towards BPSA. Ok, will do. Indeed I'm very aware that their wishes stroke with our NPOV. They see me as a CSI man of course and therefore one of the people working against them. I'm tryon to win their trust and suggested several forums to them where they can post messages that are more like advertisement. I've told them Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia, no more and no less. This means it has to give informative, correct information from a neutral point of view. BPSA Australa is a lot more positive but seems to be on the brink of extinction. Final edit should be ready tomorrow at last.

Long talk, yesterday. I'll rewrite BPSA today. BPSA Ireland, Canada, US, Australia and UK will be subsections under the main article. I'll notify you after the rewrite. They've asked me to mention the letter by the president, but I agreed on a subsection on the president with the highlights in it.

The BPSA is happy with the article and I'll just tidy it up a bit and add the other nations. The article on WFIS however seems to be laregly incorrect and I'm in contact now with the 4 instigators and the Pfadfinder Deutschland to correct it. We don't need their approval--I see outside organization's only legit role as verifying hard facts. I will agree that it is better than it was, but it still sounds self-laudatroy to me, especially the lead, which also still sounds like an advertisement about how great they are and does not summarize the article. Islamic Wikiproject Award

Would you be so kind as to go to the discussion about the Islamic Wikiproject Award? This has been a proposal that has lingered for donkey's yonks. I think the image is acceptable as a WP:PUA, but don't think the image is in line with most of the images at Wikipedia:Wikiproject awards. The design is not well supported, and right before I was going to archive the debate for lack of support, someone else moved it to the Wikiproject awards page.

Larrys Creek

Thanks for the helpful critique on the Larrys Creek FAC page. Per your comments, I have expanded the name section, removed all footnotes from the lead section (and I believe corrected all errors resulting from cutting and pasting the references), and made a new subsection on "Water quality and pollution" incorporating some material already in the article and adding one reference. I also added the list of tributaries recommended by the Rivers WikiProject. Merge

Why are you proposing to merge Wordl Cons. Award with Green Scouting? The WCA is a BSA award. I don't get the connection.Rlevse 15:58, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the WCA is issued by many world Scout associations, and was created partially in response to the rise of Green Scouting. Mainly I put the merge tags there as 1) they are related topics, and 2) WCA is a stub in need of a home. Always love to find orphans homes. However, if you see it needing to go somewhere else, please suggest it. Like Horus Kol, I am of the opinion that if it is not like an Eagle Scout or Queen Scout or Bronze Wolf, that high up or that amount of work, it needs to be under some other article. The 3RR should limit the chaos he can cause, if he's not willing to negotiate. Otherwise, I would suggest opening an RFC on the article; his motivations are seriously misguided, but not obviously bad-faith, so going down the disciplinary route is a little premature at this point.

Scouting awards

Hi, I noticed that you're quite the keen scout with your Wood Badger and Eagle. I'm a scouter myself, and have been for 6 years. I'm now doing leadership, and as of next March I'll be bumped up our hierarchy to an assistant leader officially. I'm with the 27th East Belfast scouts, UK. How did you receive both your awards? Dom, I think NI is the same as the rest of the UK - for the Queen's Scout Award, you need to just work on it, it is designed to be a self-motivated award. Still, I'd try and track down a Scout Network to work with. As for the Wood Badge - you are registered for that as part of your Adult Leadership Training in the UK. I've had that same problem. The image nazis are real pains and they have lots of backing because it helps keep wiki from getting sued. The two easiest ways I've found to avoid them is find a tag they won't complain about and use image searches on google and find (perhaps by asking) someone to use their photos. I'm also not an image expert--try User:Rebelguys2. If I think of something, I will help of course.Rlevse 22:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

About ten minutes of semi-interrupted time. Cleaned the source HTML using Ultraedit and added the link brackets, then ran it through html2wiki, then cleaned up that output with Ultraedit. Dowd fac

I noticed the article nomination was going all over the place and I was going to put some unsigned tags for some comments when i ran into some confusion with your edits.

Here is how i see the history:

• [2] - nom by User:Roserex57 and comment by User:Footballexpert
• [3] - User:Footballexpert adds a support to his comment and to the nomination itself.
• [4] - you make a nomination with a heading yourself but sign it as User:Footballexpert.
• [5] - you remove User:Footballexpert comment and replace with your own.

No, Whomever nominated it didn't set it up right, It was originally made a part of the Gilwell Park FAC(see its history). All I did was fix it so it showed up correctly with its own FAC subpage and then object to it. Once it's deleted, I suggest you put the info into an article the council/county level in that area. If you see an article that may be afd'd, it's prudent to copy it's text into a text file on your computer, that way the info isn't lost. Probably not. BSA national hq does not keep records of Eagle projects, they'd never know what he did. He would have earned Eagle about 1923 or so, so that makes it harder still. Some councils/districts keep the projects, others return them to the Scout, so it's possible but being 80-odd years ago, finding out is not likely, I think. BSA national does track every single Eagle Scout, where and when they made it, there troop, etc.; but not what their project was. The only way to find out his project would be to contact his family or the council (or its current incarnation as may have split or merged over the years) and hope for the best. Infoboxes

  • Adding fields is fine as long as they're optional, it'll only make it more flexible. The problem with changing a field name is it'll affect all instances of all articles using it. In the case of 1st Jambo, it's an event, not an organization, so we may need to make another one here. Rlevse 12:05, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

OH, I think you're talking about what it said on the main page. I think the person that does DYK is in India and so it changes before the FA of the day does. It can be hard to catch sometimes. Anyway, it said something like "not did the 1st Jambo have thousands of Scouts, but also, alligators, crocodiles, and..." some other big dangerous critters I can't recall. Harry Brinkley Bass

I've made some edits to the article, including adding his Navy Cross citations. In addition, in the infobox we usually put the medals in order of precedence down to the Purple Heart. Since the Air Medal is after the Purple Heart, I removed that from the infobox.

Thank you for creating an article. A hero with two Navy Crosses certainly should have an article. I hope you can obtain permission to use a photo.
