But they have nothing to do with sections like the External Links that have existed for months and years without controversy and serve an important purpose for people trying to find out more information about cold fusion. Thanks for the compliments regarding the 2nd Avenue Subway page. I think the original Second Ave page covers it pretty well too. Perhaps the parts to keep from 2nd Ave version are the A New 21st Century Attempt and See Also, because they have relevant information that isn't covered in the orginal artical and the links are useful.

Regaring the image of the 2nd Avenue Subway from the MTA website. The one arguement I would make in favor of using it is the fact that it comes from a publicly released PDF document about the project scope. It seems to me that such a publicly required document should be rather easy to reuse in a non-commercial format like Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rock nj (talk • contribs)

• As I said on the images talk page, the problem isnt the legality as much as it is wikipedia policy. We can only use images that are Public Domain, Fair Use, or Licensed under GFDL or similar licenses. This is none, so although it might be legal (a debatable fact anyway), its still against our policy. Image copyrights

Rock, a note about the images you've uploaded. I think you need to read up on copyright issues. First, the MTA images are not public domain, only works of the federal government and state governments of California and North Carolina are automaticly in the public domain. The rest may be (and probably are) protected by copyright, unless there is a specific statute that says otherwise. Second, images by non-profits or other private individuals (even if they don't have an explicit copyright statement) are automaticly copyrighted under US Copyright Law. We cannot just take these images and use them. Please review all of the images you've uploaded and tag them with the appropriate copyright tag, including possibly {{no license}}. OK, got it. But I do think that under the Fair Use provisions of copyright law it is suitable to use MTA images from their publicy released documents to enhance the information in a non-commercial forum like Wikipedia. I think this is exactly what Fair Use was intended for. Informational purposes in a non-commerical manner. The images help the reader understand what is written in the article. 7-Line Extension Images

You removed the 7-Line Banner which was from the MTA's website. I understand using MTA images is a grey area, so I don't dispute that you removed this image. But why did you also remove the planning document image that showed the route of the 7 line extension? This is from a public planning document released by the MTA to the public for information purposes and very relevant to the topic at hand, the extension of this line. I believe using an image from a publically released planning document should be fine in this non-commercial context, under the Fair Use context of copyright policy.

Without links to the specific images, I can't verify it, but most likely it's because the images don't have a copyright tag on the image description page. --Carnildo 05:04, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

It isn't however notable enough for inclusion in the article if you ask me. There are hundreds of "missing links" which are only very briefly discussed in a summary style. • I'm curious how the Cedar Street Subway is utilized if the tunnel entrance is at Center St. and the McCarter Hwy. Sorry if that sounds sarcastic, its not meant to be, but I'm just curious where the two lines (Raymond Blvd and Cedar St deviate). Also is segment two of the NERL supposed to be light rail down Mulberry St or utilize the subway and take a more westerly path if you know? Thanks for any info you can give me.

I wanted to give you the courtesy of telling you why I had to revert your edits to the above article. Both contentions that you made were really a form of unsourced speculation. The point about fossil fuels seems logical, but is in fact not supported by any reliable external sources. National issues tend favoring Bush over Gore or Kerry would more likely point to gun control and (to a lesser extent) social issues as opposed to coal. However, the only large chunk of voters that get worked up over coal tend to be labor Democrats that supported Gore and Kerry (those counties were among the blue counties in those elections). As far as the affinity to southern culture, that is a pretty strong stretch. While both central Appalachia and the American South share some similarities (rural poor whites), the cultural connection is limitied at best. For geographical expediency, WV is sometimes lumped in with the south, the Midwest, Mid Atlantic, or the North East, but none are great fits. I've actually told the same thing to someone from NC that tried to lump us in with "northeasterners" before because we have no death penalty and elect alot of Democrats. Global spread of H5N1

Global spread of H5N1 is about a specific strain of H5N1 that does not yet exist in North America.

H5N1 (like the other avian flu viruses) has strains called "highly pathogenic" (HP) and "low-pathogenic" (LP). Avian influenza viruses that cause HPAI are highly virulent, and mortality rates in infected flocks often approach 100%. LPAI viruses are generally of lower virulence, but these viruses can serve as progenitors to HPAI viruses. The current strain of H5N1 responsible for die-offs of domestic birds in Asia is an HPAI strain; other strains of H5N1 occurring elsewhere in the world are less virulent and, therefore, are classified as LPAI strains. All HPAI strains identified to date have involved H5 and H7 subtypes. The distinction concerns pathogenicity in poultry, not humans. Normally a highly pathogenic avian virus is not highly pathogenic to either humans or non-poultry birds. This current strain of H5N1 is unusual in being deadly to so many species.

H5N1 has mutated through antigenic drift into dozens of highly pathogenic varieties, but all currently belonging to genotype Z of avian influenza virus H5N1. Genotype Z emerged through reassortment in 2002 from earlier highly pathogenic genotypes of H5N1 that first appeared in China in 1996 in birds and in Hong Kong in 1997 in humans. The H5N1 viruses from human infections and the closely related avian viruses isolated in 2004 and 2005 belong to a single genotype, often referred to as genotype Z.

Genotype Z, also called "Asian lineage HPAI A(H5N1)", is divided into two antigenic clades. Clade 1 includes human and bird isolates from Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia and bird isolates from Laos and Malaysia. Clade 2 viruses were first identified in bird isolates from China, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea before spreading westward to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. The clade 2 viruses have been primarily responsible for human H5N1 infections that have occurred during late 2005 and 2006, according to WHO. Genetic analysis has identified six subclades of clade 2, three of which have a distinct geographic distribution and have been implicated in human infections:

Subclade 1, Indonesia Subclade 2, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (called EMA) Subclade 3, China

Low pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 (LPAI H5N1) also called "North American" H5N1 commonly occurs in wild birds. In most cases, it causes minor sickness or no noticeable signs of disease in birds. It is not known to affect humans at all. The only concern about it is that it is possible for it to be transmitted to poultry and in poultry mutate into a highly pathogenic strain.

In the past, there was no requirement for reporting or tracking LPAI H5 or H7 detections in wild birds so states and universities tested wild bird samples independently of USDA. However, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recently changed its requirement of reporting detections of avian influenza. Effective in 2006, all confirmed LPAI H5 and H7 AI subtypes must be reported to the OIE because of their potential to mutate into highly pathogenic strains.
