Answer to Question from Talk:Oboe

As an oboist, I definitely relate to your question. If you're looking for unaccompanied solo music, transposition shouldn't matter, so you could theoretically go for any treble instrument. In that case, trumpet and clarinet might be the most appropriate matches, though the ranges may reach a bit too low. If it does need to be in C, flute and violin music is probably the best place to look, as you suggested. However, especially with harder music, the ranges of flute and violin repertoire might get too high for the oboe, and the violin could be required to play double stops or gestures that simply don't work well for woodwinds. In any case, only music written for oboe will be guaranteed to work well for oboe. Flute is probably the best alternative, although you may want to transpose certain passages down an octave. All that having been said, the oboe does have some great repertoire, even if we don't get as many books of Disney arrangements and holiday music. Some of my favorites are the Poulenc sonata, the Hindemith sonata, the Vaughan-Williams concerto, and Britten's "Six Metamorphoses after Ovid".
