Changes later this week
- The mobile beta mode will be disabled to have less maintenance. The developers will focus on the desktop improvements project. You can turn on advanced mobile contributions mode if you want to see the categories. You could also jump back to the top. This can instead be done with a gadget or user script. [1]
- Parsoid is software we use for the visual editor, content translation, Flow and the Android app. This has been rewritten. It will come to the wikis gradually over the next two weeks. It has been tested, but there could be some diffs or previews that don't look right. If you see any you can report them. [2]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 November. It will be on the other wikis next week (calendar). This is because of holidays.

- An RfC on the administrator resysop criteria was closed. 18 proposals have been summarised with a variety of supported and opposed statements. The inactivity grace period within which a new request for adminship is not required has been reduced from three years to two. Additionally, Bureaucrats are permitted to use their discretion when returning administrator rights.
- Following a proposal, the edit filter mailing list has been opened up to users with the Edit Filter Helper right.
Technical news
- Wikimedia projects can set a default block length for users via MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry. A new page, MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry-ip, allows the setting of a different default block length for IP editors. Neither is currently used. (T219126)

- Mix'n'match is a tool to connect Wikidata items to information in other databases. It can be used to find subjects that are missing in a Wikipedia. It now has more than 3000 datasets. Before it was closer to 2000.

{{REVISIONID}}magic word will no longer work in the content namespaces. This is for performance reasons. When you preview a page it returns""(empty string). When you read a page it returns"-"(dash). In the future this will also affect other namespaces. The next ones are file and category namespaces. [5]

Although #9 is a religious media outlet, it is either a different denomination or a "general Protestant" kind of thing. It is not a church-run media outlet related to Lutheran Indian Ministries. - Just so you know, I am not a member of a church or denomination affiliated with LIM/LAMP. Rather, this has been a red link on wikipedia for many years. I discovered the draft article by chance and remembered the red link(s). I believe this article was created well after the red-link(s) by someone who may not have even been aware of them.
- I double checked https://www.mitchelladvocate.com/2016/09/02/mission-trip-to-weagamow-lake-first-nation-a-welcome-visit-for-locals/wcm/0cae0aad-1eed-2311-464f-d82c5a6f75b7 , and the link is working fine right now (I am using Chrome, on a desktop). You need to exit out of the pop-up on the bottom, though if you have an ad blocker on. Perhaps you are using some sort of blocker?
- Since the podcast was too long, I suggest substituting source 17 https://www.mitchelladvocate.com/2014/08/25/mission-trip-to-northern-ontario-rewarding/wcm/e0b4f1b1-627e-0df9-10fc-d1b5939e80ad instead. Since it is also from the Mitchel Advocate, let me know if you can't open it.

But, since one of the sources you mentioned (www.mitchelladvocate.com) was unavailable due to some technical problem (It's visible now), I took another look at that. It's a local-interest article that's only peripherally about the Ministry. It also appears in a local newspaper ("The Mitchell Advocate is the weekly newspaper in the municipality of West Perth, Ontario") in a town that's under 9000 poplulation. This is exactly what the WP:AUD section is getting at. Local coverage like this isn't enough. - The Linter extension helps you find technical errors in articles. It did not show new changes last week. This was because of an API problem. It is now working again. [8]
- Special:Watchlist can show the wrong information again. It does not always show which edits are read and which are unread. This is because of a database problem. The developers are working on solving the problem. [9]

I agree with your close. I want to comment on one comment. It was said that there is a higher acceptance of non-admin closures at MFD than at AFD. I am not a regular at AFD, and so wouldn't know, but I don't have a high acceptance of non-admin closures at MFD. My own thinking is that I haven't seen a tradition of non-administrators who stay out of the way of discussions at MFD so as to be uninvolved and then do the close. I think that this was a case of the non-admin closer either trying to establish a new tradition of acceptance of non-admin closures, or of setting up a record for RFA. However, I thought that the appellant was being tendentious, and was looking to see if the case was still open so as to make a request to the closer to admonish the appellant. What the appellant was saying was that they had made a particular policy argument, and that the closer was supposed to decide that their policy argument trumped all of the other policy arguments, and so cast a supervote. Oh well. It's closed, and I agree with your closure, which affirms the right close by the wrong closer. I don't think that the non-admin closer needed to be warned, but the appellant will probably get warned at some point. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:17, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news
- A request for comment asks whether partial blocks should be enabled on the English Wikipedia. If enabled, this functionality would allow administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces, rather than the entire site.
- A proposal asks whether admins who don't use their tools for a significant period of time (e.g. five years) should have the toolset procedurally removed.
- Following a successful RfC, a whitelist is now available for users whose redirects will be autopatrolled by a bot, removing them from the new pages patrol queue. Admins can add such users to Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist after a discussion following the guidelines at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist.
Arbitration
- The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being
the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted

Draftification: what am I not seeing?
Hi RoySmith, put me down as stupid, but I've always been under the impression that draftification involved two steps; undeletion, and then moving. Is there a one-step solution I've just not known of? Vanamonde (Talk) 21:32, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah, just move the page without deleting it. A lot of people use User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to automate the process, but it doesn't do anything that couldn't be done by just moving the page and following up with a bit of manual cleanup. As for being stupid, don't worry about it. I guarantee I've got "stupid" stories that can beat yours. -- RoySmith (talk) 21:39, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

- You have to do it to a page that's not deleted. For example, I just created User:RoySmith/test, then I moved it to Draft:RoySmith/test. Yes, sometimes draftifications are done coupled with undeletions. For example, a page might get deleted at AfD, brought to DRV, where the consensus is to draftify. What happens then is you undelete the page, then move it (either manually like I did in the example, or with some fancy javascript tool). As far as I know, there's no way to actually rename a page while it's deleted. But, I could be wrong on that :-) -- RoySmith (talk) 22:03, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Yes, that's what I've always done, and how I thought it worked. What I was referring to at ARBCOM was that requests for draftification or userfication often happen after deletion. Pardon the interruption. I just added an "ambiguation" link from E0 to an article you originated; REC-90. Now I'm having potential misgivings, since, while REC-90 is always E0, E0 is not always REC-90. Of course, there is no Ethanol-free article, itself. Part of me is tempted to even originate such an article, although I've never done so, yet.

- @BoringJim: Hmmm, that was a long time ago. I barely even remember writing that article. I don't see any problem with your E0 link. It would be better if the REC-90 article actually mentioned E0 in the body of the article, however. I think your plan to write an article about ethanol-free gasoline makes sense. As an aside, a few years ago, I started using pre-mixed ethanol-free gas in a small outboard motor I have. It's absurdly expensive, but I only go through about a gallon a year, so it almost doesn't matter what it costs. And, my outboard used to spend more time in the shop than on my boat. Since I've started using the ethanol-free gas, I've never had a single problem. You might want to mention this kind of fuel in your article. -- RoySmith (talk) 04:08, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

- Hi RoySmith, I wrote this on Kazemita1's Talk page but it was removed by the user. It seems that using different IPs that wouldn't be traced back to him was premeditated per his own unblock request: "lack of proper SPI investigation to at least relate these IPs to me." (this has now been removed by the user from his unblock request). Alex-h (talk) 13:25, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [19]
- Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [20]
Changes later this week
- Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [21]

<ref follow="…">to merge footnotes that follow each other. It is meant to be used for digitised books on Wikisource. If the order of the footnotes is wrong no error was shown but the bad <ref> was shown outside the <references /> list. This will change and you will see an error message instead. [23]

- Pywikibot is a Python library to automate work on wikis. It will no longer support Python 2. Use the
python2tag if you need to continue running Python 2 scripts. The Pywikibot team strongly recommends to migrate to Python 3. You can get help to do so. [24] - The weekly MediaWiki branch cut will soon become automated. The timing for this cut may change. You can discuss in Phabricator if this affects you. [25]
