Question from Mister.Early (00:09, 26 December 2024)

Is my article (autobiography) published? I can't find it in search results. --Denzel Early (talk) 00:09, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

@Mister.Early: It seems you have published your "article" to your user page, which is a space to provide information about yourself to other editors. It is not meant to be a profile page like on Facebook or other social media.
In addition, creating an article about yourself is strongly discouraged. Rusty 🐈 00:28, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
I am trying to publish my article to Wikipedia. Denzel Early (talk) 00:30, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
@Mister.Early: Please see Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Rusty 🐈 00:33, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
I followed the steps. It still hasn't been published. Denzel Early (talk) 00:36, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
@Mister.Early: You put {{subst:submit}} in the edit summary. Instead place it at the top of the page by switching to "source" mode (using the pencil icon in the top right). Rusty 🐈 00:43, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from 31nyou851r (08:46, 31 December 2024)

Hello Rusty Cat (and Ixtal) - thank you for kindly mentoring me. I have wanted to serve as a Wikipedia editor for quite some time - tonight I've finally started the process. The proximal cause is that I want to undo an edit which I think violates BLP and NPOV policy. I've read these policies carefully, and I think I can do this properly - if there are pitfalls to this kind of thing that a beginner like me should avoid, though, please let me know. Thank you! I hope to become an increasingly active editor in the coming year. --31nyou851r (talk) 08:46, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from The2gingerman (11:09, 27 December 2024)

Hello. I saw a link where, first of all, The link did not exist in the source. When purged, the link stayed. When deleted via visual editor, it stayed after publishing. When null-edited, it stayed. When clearing my browser cookies, it stayed. What should I do? --The2gingerman (talk) 11:09, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

@The2gingerman: What article is this on? Rusty 🐈 15:31, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
Someone else fixed it anyways, nevermind.
Thank you however! The2gingerman (talk) 10:00, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from PamjMeson (10:28, 27 December 2024)

Hi Rusty I'm Pam from Australia. I am planning to participate in an event to learn more about wikipedia and how to edit etc. It's not for another month or so what do you suggest Ai do in tge meantime to prepare? --PamjMeson (talk) 10:28, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Carltonuba38 (12:37, 1 January 2025)

Afternoon, I was wondering is it possible to get back my article page that was deleted/removed from Wikipedia? My name is Carlton Ubaezuonu and I’m a professional football player but I noticed my article with my history etc has been deleted? I’ve tried to contact who I believe may be responsible but I haven’t heard back. I’m not sure what steps to take? Thanks --Carltonuba38 (talk) 12:37, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

@Carltonuba38: Well, looks like you made a request for undeletion which it was accepted and the article was restored into a "Draft" article. To get the article accepted you must make sure that you can get the article to meet our policies, most importantly the general notability guideline. Rusty 🐈 01:18, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from The2gingerman (18:50, 3 January 2025)

Hi, I feel that I am ready to create my first article and have found a notable subject that I am interested in which has yet to have a Wikipedia article.

Should I submit the draft whilst still in-progress or finish the draft in my sandbox and then submit the finished draft at AFD? --The2gingerman (talk) 18:50, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

@The2gingerman: Finish the draft first. Rusty 🐈 23:44, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from Freedomrings23 on User:Freedomrings23 (19:48, 6 January 2025)

How do I make a page for my comedy career? --Freedomrings23 (talk) 19:48, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

@Freedomrings23: It seems that your page has been deleted under speedy deletion criterion U5: A non-contributor's misuse of Wikipedia as a web host. This doesn't mean you've done anything wrong, it's just that Wikipedia works differently from other websites.
Not anyone can just publish about themselves on Wikipedia not only is doing so strongly discouraged, but there are strict inclusion criteria. In the words of the autobiography policy (linked above under the words "strongly discouraged"), [i]f your life and achievements are verifiable and genuinely notable, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later, but creating an article about yourself is strongly discouraged[...]
I'm sorry if you're trying to get yourself published or "make a page," as you put it, about yourself on Wikipedia, but this isn't the right place for you.

Request on 01:11:08, 7 January 2025 for assistance on AfC submission by MoonsLion

What do you deem to be a reliable source? I would appreciate some help with this.

MoonsLion (talk) 01:11, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

@MoonsLion: I provided a link to the policy in my decline message. In short, independence from the subject and significance of coverage of the subject were two main factors when I was looking at your sources. For example, the YouTube channel about is obviously not independent, and I didn't think the news sources were significant enough about the channel itself, but rather about MFI/the members who were arrested. I might be wrong about the news sources though, as I only did a quick skim. Rusty 🐈 01:46, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from MischiefMyster (20:23, 14 January 2025)

Hi Rusty Cat I would love to know if you could give me a step by step explanation on how to edit in Wikipedia because I would love to help others with projects and don't want them to have the wrong information --MischiefMyster (talk) 20:23, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

@MischiefMyster: In my opinion, Wikipedia is not as simple as just a step-by-step guide, but I'd be more than happy to provide you with some information! Also, there's nothing wrong with making a mistake--Be bold!
Wikipedia is built on five pillars, which most of our policies are built around.
We have an introduction which you might want to check out. If you have a specific question, feel free to ask me; I tend to answer specific questions better than general ones like "how to edit Wikipedia."

Question from PerpetualStudent2000 (20:00, 20 January 2025)

Hey! I think a professor/author that I know really ought to have a wikipedia page but don't know how to gauge that officially. Could you help me? I'm talking about Marcelle Clements. Many other NYU professors/authors with less relevance have wikipedia pages so I don't see why not but I want to follow the rules. --PerpetualStudent2000 (talk) 20:00, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

@PerpetualStudent2000: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! The criteria for determining whether a subject may have an article on Wikipedia (known as the notability guidelines) state that a topic "...is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." In other words, there have to be news sources that discuss the subject in-depth for it to merit a Wikipedia article. After a quick Google search for "Marcelle Clements," not much comes up. What type of article can be adited and how --Mc snt tropez (talk) 10:31, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

@Mc snt tropez: You seem to be confused; most articles can be edited unless they are "protected" for one reason or another (for example, to combat spam). The question here is not whether you can edit an article, but whether that edit is regarded as helpful or harmful by the community. Rusty 🐈 15:40, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

Question from Gray Pxgh on Draft:Ryōmen Sukuna (Japanese Folklore) (21:42, 29 January 2025)

Hello. I’m new to Wikipedia and I recently posted a page. When I try to edit the source code, Wikipedia won’t allow it. I am only allowed to edit the text. Is there a reason for this, and if so, is it linked to the page being newly published? Thanks --Gray Pxgh (talk) 21:42, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

@Gray Pxgh: What you're describing sounds like the "Visual Editor". If you want to go back to source code editing, there is a pencil icon in the top right of the editor that allows you to change between editing modes. If you prefer to edit in source code mode, you may specify an editor preference in your preferences (top right, "profile" icon, preferences) ~ Rusty meow ~ 23:46, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

Hello I am interested in creating a Wikipedia page regarding my company. --A.vojinovic (talk) 20:09, 1 February 2025 (UTC)

@A.vojinovic: Welcome to Wikipedia. Creating a Wikipedia article about a subject you have a connection with, such as your company, is strongly discouraged per our conflict of interest guideline.
Additionally, it is of great importance that you understand that [e]ven a subject of an article [...] does not own the article, nor has any right to dictate what the article may or may not say. (from the ownership policy). So a Wikipedia article about your company may not necessarily be a good thing.

Question from DLKuh (16:51, 9 February 2025)

Hello. I discovered Women in Red had made me a wikipedia page. While I am grateful to them for doing this, I would like to correct my entry, and also address the label that says citations are needed. I tried to edit the page but my edits do not appear to have been accepted. Please tell me how I can correct the information about me. For example, I am not an alumnus of the University of Exeter! Thank you Diana Kuh --DLKuh (talk) 16:51, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

@DLKuh: Hey Diana, welcome to Wikipedia!
Regarding the question of your edit not being accepted, it is generally discouraged on Wikipedia for one to edit an article on a subject related to oneself.
There is still a way the edit can be made, however: you can submit an edit request. The edit request wizard may be helpful (select Conflict of Interest).
Important things to note:
  • You must declare that you are the subject of the article. You can choose to do this on your "user page", but whether if you choose to do it on your user page or not, I'd still recommend a declaration in your edit request, e.g. beginning with "I am ..., the subject of this article"
  • Remember to provide reliable sources, or your edit request may not be accepted.
More information is available at Wikipedia:FAQ/Article subjects and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI.
Good luck, and feel free to ask me if you have any questions! ~ Rusty meow ~ 04:56, 10 February 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Ethsun (11:32, 27 February 2025)

do you know words that begin with i before e except after c --Ethsun (talk) 11:32, 27 February 2025 (UTC)

@Ethsun: Sure! "Friend" has "i" before "e". However, "receive" has "i" after "e" since there is a "c" immediately preceding. You may also find our article I before E except after C helpful. ~ Rusty meow ~ 00:24, 28 February 2025 (UTC)

Question from SoftwareDinnerAd (22:38, 2 March 2025)

hi, what is the process for researching? --SoftwareDinnerAd (talk) 22:38, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

Question from SoftwareDinnerAd (21:24, 3 March 2025)

like what websites do you usually use if you have a select few --SoftwareDinnerAd (talk) 21:25, 3 March 2025 (UTC)

@SoftwareDinnerAd: I don't have a select few. By the way, you can use the "[ reply ]" button to reply instead of asking another question. ~ Rusty meow ~ 23:06, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
