Fair use rationale for File:Frngshuiforgardens.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Frngshuiforgardens.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 02:28, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, that file was added in 2006! I have added a rationale for it now. Cheers. – S Masters (talk) 03:13, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Ribbons!

Nice work you got going on in the ribbons section.. I am having a hard time keeping up with the small ribbons! Skibden (talk) 11:48, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Ah, it's you I'm having edit conflicts with LOL. Thank you. Yes, I'm going for an award on the Rewards Board. You should stake you claim too. :-) – S Masters (talk) 11:53, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Yes that's me :P I have allready claimed it on his talkpage.. I am up to 28 of the simple ribbons.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skibden (talkcontribs) 11:58, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Cool! Nice to meet you. :-) – S Masters (talk) 12:17, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Very nice to meet you to! Some great work you have done... I actually also have my own website about medals and ribbons..
I have an offer for you. If you make me those fancy-ribbons for Most Honorable Order of Omukama Chwa II Kabalega and Medal of Honor of ARKBK I will give you the Editor's Barnstar, as I have offered on the Wikipedia:Reward_board#Ugandan_Barnstar... Deal? Skibden (talk) 12:46, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Sure, no problems. I have to pop out for a little while. I will do them when I get back in the next few hours. – S Masters (talk) 12:52, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

  The Editor's Barnstar
Rewarded for completing the challenge I had put on the Reward Board. Thanks for the graphics work! (You rock, compared to me.. But I only have paint) Skibden (talk) 15:46, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar! Now we are just waiting for NielsenGW to come back from his honeymoon! Skibden (talk) 18:11, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Ribbon merge?

Hi. I have noticed some ribbons having two versions.. For example the anti-vandalism barnstar ribbon:
File:Antivandal rib.png
Are there some way to merge these into one, or do you manually have to change all the pages from using File:Barnstar reversion ribbon.png into using File:Antivandal rib.png ?? Skibden (talk) 14:18, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

It can be updated by just selecting "Upload a new version of this file" and uploading the updated image. That's what I did for File:Burpa Ribbon.png. Note that if it's more than just minor tweaks, it may be a good idea to ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Wikipedia Awards first. The other option is of course just ignoring the older ribbon. <shrug> VernoWhitney (talk) 14:29, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
Should I upload a new version of the file, there will still be two similar files. That I really would like it merging them together into one file. Skibden (talk) 14:51, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
There's no real way to "merge", so one of them will have to be deleted if you want only one to be available. Uploading a new version is just an easier way to force an update without changing every transclusion of the image to point to a different one. VernoWhitney (talk) 14:56, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
I see you're all enjoying your conversation here LOL. As you are doing cleanup, I think you can replace the file if there is a better version. However, this might upset some editors. You can choose the one you think is better and have it displayed, and leave your 2nd choice off the page. Also check to see - some folks might be using the file and they might not appreciate it being replaced.- S Masters (talk) 15:25, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
I am very aware of this. But IMHO the shadowed ribbons and the small ribbons should match as much as possible, in order to make the ribbons recognizable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skibden (talkcontribs) 15:50, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
I agree that they ought to match. I think you should just select the one that matches or is the closest. Don't delete the file, but just remove them from the Ribbons page. That should work. - S Masters (talk) 16:13, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Ribbon for ribbons!

  The Working Man's Barnstar
For your great work in Wikipedia:Ribbons Skibden (talk) 17:05, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Ribbon alt:

I gave this barnstar to User:VernoWhitney a week ago for his work on WP:RIBBONS, so it's only fair you get one to, for your great work on the site.. We have come a long way, and I will continue to work until ALL the barnstars are featured on the site..

This was unexpected. Thank you! :-) –S Masters (talk) 17:04, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
You are most welcome.. Good work is rewarded Skibden (talk) 20:55, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

ITN for Mary MacKillop

--HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:49, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Thank you! However, there is a mistake. It is 6 saints and not 5 as it currently appears. I have put in a report at Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors. Cheers. – S Masters (talk) 14:00, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Abraham Lincoln

This article has reappeared on the Requests list. I am at a bit of a loss here, as I know you are a professional editor and spent several days improving the article. What can I, a mere civilian, do to better your work? On the other hand, there have been nearly 200 further edits to the article since you finished your edits. I dunno, perhaps it is not stable enough to pass FA? Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. --Diannaa (Talk) 17:55, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

I worked on this article within the scope of the GOCE, in that we CE for spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, typos, transpositions, compliance to MOS, inconsistencies, and any general confusion to any facts presented (this is what I do in RL as well). The editors of this article are working to get it to FA and are looking for someone to craft the copy to this stage. They are looking for people to rewrite, restructure, re-look at references, etc. In other words, they are looking for editors to really get into this article to change and reshape its content. This is outside the scope of the GOCE. Is there a WikiProject for writers? I am no expert at U.S. presidents, and have no personal interest in the subject. However, some of our other members might be interested. I suggest we leave it there for a bit longer and then inform the the editor that made the request that what they are looking for is outside the scope of our project. – S Masters (talk) 23:46, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. It makes no sense for us as copy editors to try to hit this moving target. --Diannaa (Talk) 00:28, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation

I have made a rough first draft for the invitation for the November drive. I invite you to help refine it so it can go out in the next day or two. Thanks! --Diannaa (Talk) 22:19, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

OK, I will have a look at it over the next day or so. Thanks! – S Masters (talk) 23:47, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
On another matter, if I newbie to GOCE stumbles upon the project, they have no idea who is coordinating it. I really like how Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators is done. As both of us seem to be coordinating the GOCE, I'm wondering what you think of this idea. Perhaps we could both share the position of lead coordinator and we could recruit other coordinators to lessen the workload. At the minimum, we should get some userboxes done to indicate our work at the GOCE. What do you think? – S Masters (talk) 00:19, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
That is a lovely idea: They elect a "tranche" that serves a limited term. Some people have served for many years and form the core of the organisation. Right now we have no official coordinator; the main people who run things are the three listed on the drive invitation. If we are not doing a drive in December and January perhaps that would be a good time to do some elections? The user boxen are also a good idea --Diannaa (Talk) 00:26, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Cool, we can work to set something up for December. – S Masters (talk) 00:33, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
WP:MILHIST started with three people in 2006, and their second year they had enough interest to expand to a group of seven; they now have a head man and fourteen others. The layout of their home page is very cool indeed. --Diannaa (Talk) 00:40, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
I like the top navigation panel. Ours is a bit messy LOL. – S Masters (talk) 00:51, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I love the little tabs. We have fewer tasks on the go than they do; I am sure we could lay out our page better than we have it at present. Another project for the future. --Diannaa (Talk) 01:08, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Yes, we need to work on that. OK, the newsletter looks fine. Except, didn't we have complaints last time about that text in the left column coming out funny? I suggest that we remove that text and replace it with a line at the start to "brand" GOCE: "Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editos..." followed by the rest of the copy. Otherwise I'm fine with it. – S Masters (talk) 01:16, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
The completed version is below. I like the idea of branding and uniformity. It promotes the project and makes us seem well organised. The tab-thing we were admiring at WP:MILHIST? They created their own, but there is a simplified version at template:PageTabs that we could think about using at some point in the future. Regards, --Diannaa (Talk) 03:22, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I posted my comments regarding the newsletter in the section below (underneath the actual newsletter). – S Masters (talk) 03:26, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

November copy edit drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

  • Hi Diannaa and Utahraptor, I noticed that the newsletter was sent out manually. Is the bot down? I just want to double check that we have sent this to every single participant from all our previous drives, as well as Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/List of participants plus Category:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors members. As our last drive and push for the end of the year, we need as many as possible to help us end the year with a bang. Each of these groups I have mentioned here are quite different. There will be duplication across the lists, so we need to weed them out. But it is important that we reach all these groups. I don't know how to use the bot (someone should teach me), so any help is much appreciated. Thanks so much! Cheers. – S Masters (talk) 01:10, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
P.S. Sorry I will be offline for the next 12-24 hours or so, as I have tons of work to do at work. – S Masters (talk) 03:07, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Hi, Utah and i split the alphabet and finished the "Category". I finished half the "List" (User names starting with L through Z). Utah did not touch the "List" yet as far as I know. The previous drive participants have not been checked yet. I had to stop as it was driving me mad. Yes, the bot is down --Diannaa (Talk) 03:37, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
I wasn't able to touch the list, but I'll get to it as soon as I can. The Utahraptor's sock (talk) 18:40, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
I have now completed the back half of the alphabet (L to Z) from all the above mentioned sources. --Diannaa (Talk) 19:46, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Done with my part. The UtahraptorTalk to me/Contributions 21:52, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
