Vandalism?

edit

I would like to known what you consider "vandalism" regarding my contributions on that page.

While I do believe I used that template quite hastily, I would disengage from making such large edits like that because it does come across as vandalism. I would discuss the matter of your changes in the Tiger page before doing so. Also, try to sign any comment you make using four tildes as so, ~~~~. Hello. Can you please provide references for your addition to Secretary Bird? Wikipedia needs such information to be based on more than your own knowledge of the subject. Please provide a book(s)/article(s) etc that you base this on, and add it to the information in the article. Bears

edit

Regarding your change to the bear article, you're right of course, the danger emanating from bears is a relative thing. Bears are for the most part _potentially_ dangerous for the most part depending on human behavior (sneak up on a grizzly and find out) and there have been cases where usually starving weaker young grizzly males have gone after humans as their last resort. Blacks bears are another story entirely. These are the most docile bears on the planet, hell I've seen pictures of one being cornered and chased up a tree by a house cat. A bunch of people have been keeping them for pets lately (the most demanding pet imaginable). Lynn Roger's research http://www.bearstudy.org/About_WRI/Lynn_Rogers.htm might be of interest.

There is one thing to keep in mind with Wikipedia. It was never meant to be up to date compendium of hard science or even to be truthful. More than anything it is a vehicle for the views of Jim Whales and his friends and they've created an environment where popular opinion prevails over fact. Sometimes there is collateral damage such as in your case. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.160.209.75 (talk) 08:23, 10 May 2007 (UTC).Reply

Re: Bears

edit

Of course, bears will far more often than not avoid contact with people. Attacks are often caused unintentionally by people when they surprise a bear or close a garbage dump that a bear may become dependant on. All bears are powerful animals and are capable of killing people. There are recorded incidents of every extant species of wild bear attacking people, with the possible exception of the Spectacled Bear. I'm aware that the threat that people pose to bears dwarves the threat that bears pose to people.

Hi Sandhill. I notice you've been adding a lot of animal info. Glad you want to help out.
At a glance, you aren't citing your sources, as Uther notes, which isn't allowed. For the format of citations see the Wikipedia:Citation templates. Note, you don't have to actually use the templates, but the way they break out information is preferable. Hi. I noticed you've added a lot of interesting information about such and such a bird being the biggest in its family, smallest in its range, etc. Could you please include your sources with all those edits? That's Wikipedia policy and it makes sure the information is good. I'll be glad to help you with formatting references if you want, though often you can just copy what's already in the articles. —JerryFriedman (Talk) 20:51, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Crotalus adamanteus

edit

Just a few minutes ago you made a change to the Crotalus adamanteus article that I'm afraid I could not let stand. You changed:

"... The largest rattlesnake species, the maximum sizes reported are 244.0 cm (8 ft) (Klauber, 1972) and 251.5 cm (Ditmars, 1936). One captive specimen weighed over 26 pounds (12 kg). ... (Campbell & Lamar, 2004)"

... to

"... The largest rattlesnake species, the maximum sizes reported are 244.0 cm (8 ft) (Klauber, 1972) and 251.5 cm (Ditmars, 1936), and were estimated to weigh approximately 22 kg (48 lb) each. ... (Campbell & Lamar, 2004)"

The problem here is twofold: first, you added new information to a section of text that was already accurately paraphrased and referenced. However, your new information cannot be found in the original source text. This makes it look like your information came from Campbell & Lamar, 2004, even though it didn't. Second, you deleted the statement, also referenced from the same source, that indicated the maximum reported weight. Basically, what you've done is to replace accurate and referenced information with information from an unknown source. This is not helpful. If you must add additional information, or replace existing information, make sure you add a new reference to show where you got it. Formatting references

edit

Hello, that was a good piece of information you added to Common Raven, but it would be helpful if you could format references using the cite format. This page - Template:Cite_web is helpful. There is also Template:Cite_book and Template:Cite_journal. Also, be wary of some web references as they are some way down the chain from even scholarly works. If in doubt just ask someone. Great Horned Owl

edit

Hello Sandhill, thanks for the new information you added to Great Horned Owl and thank you for citing your source. I'm afraid I have reverted your change and I wanted to be sure to explain why. I took a look at the reference you cited http://www.canadianwildlife.ca/facts/Hornedowl.asp?page=/facts/Hornedowl and sure enough it does list 2.9kg as the high side weight for a Great-horned owl. I was curious about this as it contradicts the existing article. I checked the references cited at the bottom of that page and four of them were broken links. The ones that did work directly conflicted with the weight range cited in the article so the canadian wildlife page is not a very good source for information. Please keep working to improve pages but if you find a webpage that seems to conflict with what others have already written be sure the source is a good one. Thanks! Speedy deletion nomination of Infrastructure Solution Services

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Infrastructure Solution Services, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hang on to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Sarus wingspan

edit

Do you have a reliable source for the 280 cm wingspan ? Please note at Talk:Sarus Crane - the ICF actually lists about 240 cm, afaik, wingspan is a tricky measure due to the subjectivity of its measurement and dependence on method used. Perhaps you have a journal reference for this change ? Thanks Shyamal (talk) 16:23, 21 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I based it on this page: http://www.oiseaux-birds.com/card-sarus-crane.html This other page also list Sarus as having a "9 foot wing span": http://www.cougarmountainzoo.org/The%20Animals/saruscranefact.aspx

The article incidentally was raised to GA status and one of the important features is the traceability to reliable sources such as books by specialists and journals. The above mentioned websites would not be considered particularly reliable. I also just noticed that the height was also exaggerated - most birds are 150 cm and the record bird was 180 cm but it seems like someone has rounded that off to 200 which is not very accurate. References

edit

Hi, you have made several edits to articles about birds this evening which have left the pages with error messages showing in red towards the bottom, eg: Fork-tailed_Flycatcher. This has been because there was no reflist in the "References" section of the article. Next time you see this happen could you perhaps include that instruction rather than leaving the page in a "errored" state that causes it to display on the maintenance lists? It is usually easier for the person who made the edit to fix the problem than it is for someone who first has to work out what that person did before determining the changes necessary to fix it. It is not a big deal, but then it isn't a big deal to get it right once you know how. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 22:11, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ignoring my previous

edit

It seems that you have possibly not considered my previous message about messing up articles on birds due to a failure to use the reflist template. Yet again, there are multiple pages last edited by you on the maintenance lists because the references are "broken" as a consequence of this. I am inclined to treat any further such edits as vandalism and revert them - you are adding useful information but in a poor manner. If you do not understand how to use this template then please do contact me on my talk page and I will explain it to you. It really is not diffivult & you'll get the hang of it very quickly. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 00:22, 28 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I tried to see the Fork-tailed Flycatcher reference you referred to but was unable to see the difference in our postings so I had an exmaple. Are you saying that the links in my references are coming up red & not working? Thanks

I figured out what you're referring to. Thanks for the heads-up

Measurement sources

edit

In some of the bird articles, the measurements from reliable regional handbooks are being overwritten with measurements from zoo sites and other non-reliable sources. Note that zoos often have hybrids/inbreds or birds of unknown pedigree and under/overnourished specimens while bird handbooks deal with variation within geographical populations. It would be preferable to entirely avoid citing stray zoo or bird websites as they are not considered as reliable sources. Perhaps you can also discuss this on WT:BIRD but I am afraid some of the measurements added are entirely dubious. Shyamal (talk) 02:08, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The measurements of the Hyacinth Macaw were adequately referenced with one of Forshaw's books. Forshaw is one of the world's experts on parrots, so there was no need to change the weight range of this sourced from Forshaw's book. Bird dimensions and reflists...

edit

Hi, I just noticed that you've added additional referenced data to some of the bird articles that happen to be on my watchlist - but without adding the corresponding Reflist tag that allows the inline references to appear correctly formatted at the bottom of the article (e.g. on Parasitic Jaeger and Pomarine Skua). Just a heads-up... If the tag's not already there in the references section and you don't add it, it throws up an ugly red warning at the bottom of the page... --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 19:36, 20 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wildcat

edit

I guess it was spotting "preanal", as an unfamiliar word in the 1st line of a 'graph of Wildcat#Build, that led me to work so extensively without reading the other sections, and a lot of it overlapped with your recent edit to the article (the most recent interesting one), which affected that section. My comments in talk:Wildcat#Pre-anal vs. preanal, talk:Wildcat#Body length, and talk:Wildcat#The cool norths all relate to that section, and if you don't know how to get an automated Diffs listing of what i changed from and to in the article, respond to this note, just below it. (I'll watch yr talk page for a while.) I hope at the least that you'll react if i misconstrued your wording in the analysis i applied in the last of those 3 talk sections: i am claiming no subject knowledge, and just trying to infer, or guess, what was intended by wordings that were ambiguous or at least syntactically awkward. Undoubtedly i said mostly too much in my talk contribs and the "Reason" fields of my tags in the article; don't worry about embarrassing me with very specific requests like "Did you mean that..." or "What in the world did you mean by..." questions. Thanks for the new content!

You added this: </ref> Andean condors have been observed to do some hunting of small, live animals, such as rodents, birds and rabbits, which (given their lack of powerful, grasping feet or developed hunting technique) they usually kill by jab repeatedly with their bill.. There is no ref named "ADW", so this gives a big red mistake notice in the reflist section. Perhaps, you can put it right. Snowman (talk) 14:54, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Trumpeter Swan and "Wedge"

Trumpeter Swan: starting in the first sentence of the "Description" section, you added several times to the article. Wedge is undefined, however, and causing a citation error in the References section. Could you go back to the article and fill in the reference, please? 71.234.215.133 (talk) 02:49, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have no recollection of adding the "Wedge" reference, will have to double check where I got that.

You added the Wedge non-ref six times in this edit, at the same time you added a full ref for Steve Madge . Is it possible there was no Wedge to ref, that you misspelled Madge multiple times? Just trying to help, as whatever Wedge respresents looks like a wonderful reference. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 14:16, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

You know what, I think that Wedge was a typo that I copy and pasted instead of "Madge". Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Non-citation

edit

I noticed several inappropriate changes in measurements of birds with the citation given as "The Book of Indian Birds" by Salim Ali. I have the book, and checking it shows that the cited reference says nothing about the weights or measurements that you mention. I think this is a serious matter that needs to be avoided particularly in well-referenced articles. The statement that the Sand Lark was the smallest of larks - was what is called WP:OR by synthesis - saying so by your own judgement of measurements from multiple sources, which is strictly against Wikipedia policy. Shyamal

Did not state Sand Lark was the smallest of all sand-larks, I believe I stated it was one of the smallest species and only that it is near the smallest range of sizes (12-13 cm) of the larks. See also, http://books.google.com/books?id=8ndIAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA428&lpg=PA428&dq=sand+lark+smallest&source=bl&ots=_yM_tiTqEj&sig=nea2r-xZJ8Gox1MZObYio_8eKS0&hl=en#v=onepage&q=lark%20smallest&f=false. (talk) 02:58, 24 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to add that the measurements listed are included in Ali's book (for example cm for Malabar Pied Hornbill ‎and Indian Grey Hornbill) on the color plates. Does you copy contain these?

Have added a list of editions on Book of Indian Birds - cannot find any reprint/edition of the year 1993. Shyamal (talk) 15:31, 24 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Here is the edition I own: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=7611003304&searchurl=an%3Dali%26n%3D100121503%26tn%3Dbook%2Bof%2Bindian%2Bbirds

That is a twelfth edition - could not have been printed in 1993 - does not have weights and measurements on the plates- and it would seem like the only ones claiming this peculiar citation on the Internet are on Wikipedia - presumably all being your edits. Shyamal (talk) 07:20, 25 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Look, this is the edition of Ali's book that I have and you are the only one I am aware of who feels these particular citations are peculiar. The cover art is exactly the same and the online book seller even describes it as the 1993 edition. On the flap with the publisher information, it is described as copyrighted in the year 1993. I'm afraid you are simply incorrect regarding the length measurements in cm and, in some cases, the standing measurements in cm of the birds on the color plates. If you want to view these, I recommend buying this book then, even if you already have another edition.

I too have questions about the citations you've been adding to this book. First, you've been using the ISBN "0-149-563731-3" which fails the parity check. I think the actual ISBN is "0-19-563731-3" (without a "4"). In my search to fix this issue, I also had trouble finding the exact book you meant to reference because of the 1993 issue. Eventually I determined that you most likely meant the twelfth edition which was published in 1996, not 1993. The previous eleventh edition was first published way back in 1979, with reprints in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, and 1992. The link above you provided doesn't seem to be totally working the way it once did but a link to the cover suggests you do have the twelfth edition. It is possible is that you have obtained a pre-publication version of the twelfth edition from 1993 that was not ready to be published and was using an invalid ISBN on purpose. If you could provide another link to a cover that matches your edition, we can solve this. Second, I too am having trouble verifying that this book actually confirms the information being cited. The help for cite book describes how to use parameters like "page" and "pages" and "quote" that can be used to point to the exact material that supports the article text. Please consider using these in the future. Jason Quinn (talk) 15:51, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Capitalization

edit

Per MOS (MOS:LIFE, MOS:CAPS, etc.) we avoid capitalization of most words and section titles in the body text (not in references though), say "Commericial hunting and traditional medicine" instead of "Commericial Hunting and Traditional Medicine" in section title, "The tiger" instead of "The Tiger", etc. Cheers. Hi Sandhillcrane. Could you check this edit, please, and see what you meant by adults generally consuming more than juveniles and thus improving energy deficent during winter, as it's currently not quite making any sense. I don't want to change it, since i don't have access to the reference you used, and i don't know what you actually intended to convey. Thanks, Cheers, LindsayHello 08:28, 19 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lindsay, That indicated per that study that the survival rates would be greater for adults than juveniles because the adults were able to attain more food. Perhaps the word should be "deficencies".

Thanks. Bizarrely, your talkpage fell off my watchlist, so i didn't notice your reply till just now. Perhaps you could take a look and be sure i haven't misrepresented the source? Cheers, LindsayHello 05:55, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've reverted your GF edits to this article. I'm shortly going to submit it to FAC, so it's important that the referencing is spot on. It's not clear to me that the Wildlife Garden Project is an RS source, let alone that it is a more dependable reference that either Clements Thrushes or HBW. With regard to the weight, HBW is an impeccable source, but you didn't give a page number. I've since reinstated the weight, but referenced it to the on-line text of HBW for consistency (I've used this version elsewhere in the article) and because it's more accessible. I hope this is OK. Birds of Somalia

edit

Hey, I noticed that you added a reference to Birds of Somalia in this edit, marking it as having the ISBN number "030007456". Unfortunately, that ISBN is invalid. From what I can tell based on this WorldCat entry, the actual ISBN is 1-873403-58-5. For the moment, I'm updating the relevant article (Verreaux's eagle) with this ISBN, but I thought I should ask—is there something I'm missing with the "030007456" number? talk 19:21, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

No, I can't recall from memory the source of that ISBN, I probably copied it from a reference in another source. I see there's been a more recent edition of this book published in 2013.

On 27th February 2011 you added a large chunk of text to the article Eurasian eagle-owl. When I was editing the article today I noticed that you had copied and pasted text from this page of the Owl Pages in apparent violation of copyright law. Perhaps you could explain.

The question I ask myself is "Has Sandhillcrane made such copyright infringements in other articles?" What about the recent massive expansion of Great horned owl, is it a work of scholarship or one of plagiarism? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 15:53, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I might have not known at that the time at about copyright infringement, at any rate, I don't recall copying and pasting into the Eagle-Owl for a copyrighted source, if so thank you for catching my error. No, it is one of scholarship...One might use similar language from one's resources, but I invite you to review my recent edits of the GHO article and their sources to determine if this falls under you definition of "plargiarism", which I am not sure is correct if you are sourcing your references.
I did look at a few of the GHO sources and compared them with what you had written and saw nothing amiss. I imagine you are now familiar with the Wikipedia copyright policy and I don't intend to take any further action on this matter. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:27, 28 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Impromptu Collaboration for Brown thrasher and potential FA status?

edit

I recently visited the page saw an expansion of citations, and wondered from where. I figured to thank you for it, and ask if you were interested in helping me buffer up the article as a legitimate FA candidate? I need to replace a few of the citations to more reliable ones, and I have a few in mind from Google Scholar that can be used. Plus I have a subscription to the Birds of North America page for at least until June 7th, so I can attempt to utilize that source as much as possible. Respond either here or on my page when you get the chance, and thanks for your assistance! LeftAire (talk) 22:27, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I will do some research, when I have time. I also have access to BNA Online, it is a great resource.

All right, then, cool. Just let me know whenever you get started on adding more info, I'll jump in whenever I can. LeftAire (talk) 16:38, 9 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello there! I have seen your awesome contributions to the great white pelican. I am trying to bring it to a GA status and then to an FA status. Yes, I would consider that. Perhaps White-tailed Eagle?

Yes, did you ever nominate before? If you have any questions, I'd be happy to assist. It seems you have a nice backlog of ready articles that could be nominated. FunkMonk (talk) 15:05, 3 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I'm unfamiliar with the process. Could you give me any pointers on how to propose it on there?

Yes, as a first time nominator, it would probably be a good idea to put your favoured article up for WP:peer review first, stating there that your goal is GA and eventually FA. Then interested editors will add comments for how to improve the article accordingly. After that, I can help you nominate it for GA (it is pretty easy, though, the instructions are quite clear). Dwarf bittern

edit

Hi Sandhillcrane! I've been working my way through the WP:BIRD cleanup listing, and recently looked at dwarf bittern, which you substantially improved back in 2014. However, it contains many footnotes (a la "Tarboton 1980") with no corresponding entry in the reference list. Can you please supply those? Otherwise, the article is effectively unreferenced. And, while you're at it, can you please further explain a "forward display"? Someone asked for clarification on what that meant way back in 2014! Thanks. MeegsC (talk) 19:55, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I now see that it was lifted almost verbatim from the HeronConservation website. This is a huge no-no, which I'm sure you know! I'm afraid most of the article may have to be reverted. MeegsC (talk) 20:18, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Brown bear into Dietary biology of the brown bear. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted copied template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. On how to nominate article to GA

edit
hi Sandhillcrane, if you feel the article does look good already, you can nomimate it as GA on the article's talkpage like this edit [3],

just copy-paste it and you'll just replace the date and time to current time and the name into your name you've placed/edited it on talkpage. After nominating, you need to wait for reviewer to review your article, if the reviewer reviews the article, they will notify you on your talkpage. The review is like this [4] on other article. You need to address each reviewer request , mostly every article needs to be copyedited/written properly so it will have a higher chance to be GA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 126.47.237.232 (talk)

hi Sandhillcrane – this edit you made to the Steppe eagle article is the single biggest edit I can recall seeing on Wikipedia! Out of curiosity: where did you draft the contents of this edit? Did you use one of Wikipedia's editors (see: mw:Editors)? A third-party editor like Google Docs or Microsoft Word? I ask these questions out of curiosity and amazement ^ _ ^ By the way, I'm Peter and I work on the Wikimedia Foundation's Editing Team. PPelberg (WMF) (talk) 18:46, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I use Excel to sort out references as I research and then wrote the actual Wikipedia article on Microsoft Word. Before I submit a page but after I make the edits on Microsoft Word I tend to do "Show Preview" a number of times until I'm satisfied with the way the page looks. Nice to meet you, Peter, I'm Sam.

Excel for gathering references and Microsoft Word for drafting...understood! I appreciate you sharing this process with me, Sam. If anything software-related comes up as you're editing, please let me know. See you around 👋 PPelberg (WMF) (talk) 00:08, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
