Advice...

edit

Please don't make a habit of posting abuse on my page one day - even if you are drunk as you suggested - and then have the hide to ask me for advice. I've seen people blocked for a lot less.

Not that I took any notice - when, like me, you run a wiki project, get a couple of broad and controversial topics (U2, Indonesia) to feature article, get get a few GA's, negotiate solutions to editing deadlocks then I might listen to you. Currently, you seem to have a lot to learn about wikipedia, as exemplified by Heritage homes of Sydney, and your uncivil behaviour.

As for your initial question on templates (which I note has come out of (ill adivsed?) praise I gave you), a navigational template is really not that hard to find. Don't ask me and then be a smart arse (even thought you've missed JRG's point) straight away on my page. Grow up before coming back to my page please. --Merbabu (talk) 10:03, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

You need to take more care [1]. Remember, wikipedia is a big goldfish bowl. --Merbabu (talk) 13:03, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rozelle

edit

It looks to me like we have a problem with the Rozelle article. It says that Callan Park is in Rozelle, but according to Gregory's, it is actually in Lilyfield, (being immediately on the Lilyfield side of the boundary). Seems to me this should be changed; it's the kind of factual thing that we don't want to get wrong. Let me know what you think.

Sardaka (talk) 10:14, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have noticed that. Lilyfield was once a very small suburb but the name is more prestigious in recent times. That has led to its borders extended to include Callan Park nad Rozelle Hospital at one end and Leichhardt oval and Leichhardt Park at the other end. Go ahead and make the changes, if you have the time. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 23:44, 16 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Camera

edit

How are you.
Man I just have to ask, What kind of camera are you using bro?. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 07:08, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would say that digital is the way to go. Also cannon would be one of the best brands to go with. I can only say this becuase most of the best pictures on wikipedia were taken with cannons. Have a look at this blokes photos User:Diliff. These would have to be some of the best that I have seen. You should also try photo stitching software. In some cases this can be free if you know the rite people or what strings to pull. Check this out. You don't need panoramas but you can use it for wide shots and so on. Have you ever gone out to take pics and thought to yourself, I wish this camera could take in just a little more width or a little more height, well this will solve all you problems. This photo goes all the way around Image:Herny batt.jpg. I think there is about 15 0r 20 twenty adjoining images in this pic and its on two levels. Check it out. Cheers. --User:Adam.J.W.C. Wentworth Park

edit

Hi again. I noticed that someone deleted my entry on the railway viaduct in Wentworth Park. Do you know who it was? I know we have to accept that people will make changes we don't agree with, but in this case there was no rational reason for dumping the material completely. Sardaka (talk) 12:40, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It probably was deleted accidently with all those other recent changes. It's good info, so I've restored it. I'll try and get a photo of it when I head out that way again. The weather has been rotten lately, so I haven't ventured out in ages. I made some more changes to the Rozelle article after you removed the Callan Park stuff and added some photos from other articles. Thanks for letting me know about the reinstatement of the other editor too. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 13:34, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Henry Fort

edit

Ah, just got your message. The Henry fort is in La Perouse, it is very close to the Golf Links golf club on Cape Banks [2]. If you plan on going there and want to have a look inside, you will definitely have to ask me how to get in. Anyone fatter than me will have great difficulty getting inside though. If you want to find out about other locations and how to infiltrate tunnels and so on, just ask. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 08:25, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It might be worth having a look at. The link that I gave you marks the exact spot. If you interested here are some other thing in Sydney [3]. I have plenty more than this as well.. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 08:34, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure if you have seen this

Hi Sardarka. Was your last message meant for me and what website are you talking about. Cheers. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 21:55, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I actually use a FinePix S5700 S700, I paid $348.00 Aussie dollars. Its not to bad, the photos are average in quality, some look reasonably good but still I would not recommend this camera. I don't know what the Panosonic cameras are like but most of the featured pictures on this website were taken with Cannons, some over over a grand in price. If you have done already check out this guys user page User:Diliff. Its a must see. Don't forget the photo stitching program, you can go up in height as well as wide. Cheers Bro. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 02:08, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I actually went out today to get a price on the Canon 5D. I was actually in for a bit of shock, I was expecting the price to be around 1200.00 which is kind of in my price range, give or take a few hundred. It was actually closer to $3000.00, a bit much for a hobby that brings in no cash but its kind of interesting when you do a google search on your own wikipedia user name and find that your photos are being used on websites from all over the world, [4] especially when they credit you on their website. The last picture I found being used on a website was a picture of an Australian Water Dragon that I took being used in a news article for a recently discovered new species of lizard they found in some foreign country[5]. The lizard in the picture is totally unrelated to the article but they are still using it "Bizare". --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 01:19, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Here is a gallery of 250 [6]pics that I took. Its a link to my gallery on commons. Also have a look at my photo of the Olympic velodrome on my userpage. I'll get back to you later about some other stuff. Cheers. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 09:32, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you want people to pay credit to you when it comes to using your photographs you should probably use a different license tag. . --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 09:48, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the compliments. I have just returned from the Blue mountains and taken heaps of panoramas. This will require a lot of joining so I will upload over the next few days. Here is one of them, the others can be viewed on commons.. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 10:35, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

taken on the stairs out the back of the hydro maj
Hi and sorry for the late reply. I have been kind of busy joining and photoshopping all the panoramas I took in the Blue Mountains over the weekend. I enjoyed the walk through neats glen which starts at the Evans lookout, have you been through that narrow canyon. I can tell you now that canyon with its rainforests is one of the most difficult things to photograph. I may return to cover a different area next time, maybe Wentworth Falls valley of the waters.

When you take some good pics let us know so I can see the quality. I may buy the same camera if I like you shots. With my camera specs I am not quite sure what that is, but the lens is 48mm with a x10zoom. I will show you some more panos once they are uploaded. Also you should try that photo stitching program, not just for panoramas but for wides as well. I noticed you added a picture of a guest house in Katoomba the other day and that there is a bit missing of the end, I think on the right hand side, with the photo stitching you could have atleast taken in the entire house width and hieght.

Do you know of any heritage homes in Sydney that are open to the public. I could probably take panoramas inside if poss. How about one picture that takes in two or three different rooms. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 01:04, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, how are you going with the new camera. Regarding the view finder, well I never actually started taking photos until I started with my digital. On my camera I have the option of using the screen of the eye peice, I prefere the screen becuase it seem easier for me. I have just added a whole heap of new photos and panoramas to the Blue Mountains article, you may wish to check it out. Cheers. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 00:38, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

And uploading them

edit

Have you had any trouble with uploads lately? I find they're taking ages and then I give up. Is it me?

Sardaka (talk) 09:33, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Haven't had any trouble uploading but I haven't done any in the last couple of weeks. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 23:01, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
The photos you are uploading might be high resolution, this may slow things down. Are the pictures from you new camera, are you using the highest resolution possible, how do the new photos compare with you previous scans as far as resolution goes. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 02:22, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I thought that might have been the case. I use the highest rez on my camera which is 7.1 but I don't seem to have any trouble. It only seem to slow if I try to upload more than three images Simultaneous. Normally I would open up three or more tabs at the same time, copy and past all the relevant license tags and info into each page, then upload. But still I suggest you keep using the highest quality images as poss. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 22:00, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have just had a look at the new pics. Its a big improvement and the photos are of great quality. You could still take in some more width and height, thats where the program I was talking about would come into good use. Whatever you do do not buy wide or fish eye lenses, they are crap.

My uploads normally take about 1minute or less, even the St Mary's pic didn't take all that long. Instead opening up a new window I set my internet preferences so that I open up a new tab instead. This means I can open up one window on either Mozilla firefox or IE but have several different windows open in tabs. So I open up as many different tabs as I want, you can have 50 if you like but that would probably slow your computer down to much when trying to upload 50 pics at once. I can do about three before my computer freezes up. So I open up three tabs, go to the first tab open up the appropriate screen for uploading the pics, then I copy and paste the web address for that page into every other tab. This will take you staight to the upload page. Then I select an image one after another into the different tabs, then I go to the first tab, add the description, license tag, date and so on. Then lets say every other photo has the same or similar kind of description and so on, lets say for example my Blue Mountains pics. I will copy and past that info into every other tab, then go back to the first tab and hit the upload button one after the other in each tab. It will normally take a few minutes to upload, but once again with my computer I can only do three before it slows right down. Hope this makes sense.

Also, instead of creating a gallery in commons it would be much better to create a category, like category Woollarah, New South Wales. The category then becomes the gallery. You then categorize the category with [[Category:Sydney]], this will make the first category a sub category in the Sydney category. Cheers
. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 01:15, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have just created a category for you images [7]. It is now a sub category in category:Sydney. Check it out.. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 01:20, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you want to open up in tabs, click tools, general, settings, open links in other programs in, click either new window or new tab. Thats how it seems to work in the latest version of internet explorer. This will not speed up your uploads but it seems like a more efficient way to work with multiple pages or websites. You know you can have more that one wikipage open whilst having the internet open only once. As for download speed it must have either something to do with your computer or internet connection. If you want to buy a good computer at a dirt cheep price. There is a computer market on every Sunday at north Rocks Public School. I bought a second hand del for 340.00 and it is fast as. My latest picture took 20 seconds to upload, its a large file as well Image:PacificHwyChatswood.jpg. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 09:45, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tabs

edit
No I am not talking about wiki preferences. I am talking about internet settings. If you want to try something good in Wikipedia preferences. click preferences, click gadgets, click navigational popups then save. You wont be disappointed. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 09:51, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not actually talking about prefs in commons but on wikipedia. I don't think they have popups over there. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 09:54, 20 May 2008 (UTC) Thats it.Reply

Sorry just had a look it works differently with IE. At the moment I am using firefox. If you have a look at the open tab on the tool bar under the web address bar there is a small box next to that if you click it it should open a new tab, try it. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 10:15, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

You can go into file to open up another tab or just click on the small box next to the tab thats already there. It doesn't do anything special for uploads but would be a more efficient way of using multiple windows or multiple uploads. I think you can have as many tabs as possible. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 09:18, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

re:Tabs again

edit
I never actually said that tabs sped up uploads, what I was trying to suggest was that it was a more eficcient way of uploading multiple photos or working with multiple windows. For some reason I have had great luck with my uploads lately. The reason for the faster uploads could be either the computer or our internet connection. We don't pay for our internet usage, its paid for by Strathfield Car Radios. I uploaded a picture of Chatswood last night, it took less than a minute.. --User:Adam.J.W.C. The flora and fauna of the Blue Mts are extremely varied. Forest etc is anything from eucalypt to heath to rainforest pockets in the gullies and canyons. Fauna are likewise varied, including kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and incredible variety of birds. Try the book, Sydney and Blue Mountains Bushwalks, Neil Paton, Kangaroo Press. I had a look at the gallery and categories that you created on Commons. It looks pretty good I could probably add quite a few images to them later. I have just been going through some of my older images and found that some of them can be joined. You wouldn't happen to have any pics that can be joined would you. The images would have to have some overlap and be adjacent to one another. If they worked out I could re-upload for you.. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 09:40, 23 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re:Pix

edit

Hi, I saw some of the galleries on commons. I noticed you tried to create some new categories as well. They look great. The only thing is, when creating a category on Commons, you don't put the actual pictures in the category like you would in a gallery, you put the category at the bottom of the description page of the image itself and this will place the image in the gallery (in alphabeticla order). If you want to create a sub category you would add category:subcat(name of category) to the images that you want to be in the sub category and then categorize the subcat with the main cat. If you want one of you pictures in a category and don't want it to be placed right at the bottom, renam the image with the appropriate name and then place the number 1 at the start of the image name. This will push you image to the top of the category or close to it.

I saw some of the images you took with the new camera, looks like you are doing well. I saw the inside of the church, pretty good for a dark interior shot. Did you use time exposure and a stand. If not you should try some night shots with time exposure [and a stand] especially around the city. Have you seen the velodrome shot on my user page. That is a combination of 32 hand held shots. With the Glebe area, I used to go through there quite a bit but but it has been a few years now so I have kind of forgotten the place, I know its a nice area though. --User:Adam.J.W.C. Commons Categories

edit

You may want to see this. I have just created a two new categories on Commons. The first being Commons:Category:Urban exploration (Sydney) and the second Commons:Category:Cave Clan sites. There is also a Cave Clan article with a few strange sentences in it. Probably original improvised research. Any way check out the categories. Theres quite a few thing that you didn't know about Sydney in them.

Also if you have a look at the categories. Click the edit button for the category and you will notice that I have not added any picture to the category, I have added the category to the pictures. Cheers. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 01:44, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

When it comes to placing pictures in categories, what you can do is categorize either before or after you upload the image. Categorizing an image is like categorizing an article. So when you place the licence tag, description of the photo and put the date in you can also add the category there as well (on the image description page). If you don't know how to add the category you can copy and past this onto the description page of any of you images[[Category:Name of category]]. Just delete the example and put the name of the cat in its place. I will get back to you about some other stuff later on. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 21:54, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

When you place the licence tag in a photo don't use {{GFDL}} use this instead {{self|cc-by-3.0}}. If you use this and someone decides to use one of you photos in a website they will have to attribute the author. Cheers. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 22:02, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

When you saved the photo did you save the highest re version. Also I thinkg the file might shrink a bit when you join all the photos up and there is a slight crop at the bottom to take out the hand rail. I'll have to get back to about the camera and the other stuff that I haven't replied to later on in the evening. Cheers. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 22:01, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just had a look at the file size for that image on its description page it says that the image size is = 3,462 × 741 pixels, file size: 2.56 MB. --User:Adam.J.W.C. (talk) (talk) 22:03, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Campbelltown pics

Good work with those photos you added to the Campbelltown article! Crico (talk) 12:35, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re:Campbelltown pics

Hi. If you want to add these to a campbelltown category on commons you will have to categorize each image with that category. When you do this this will automatically place the image in the gallery. So I would not recommend a copy and past of a gallery into the category but categorizing the images will put them where you want them to go. When I have more time later this evening I will read further into you comments and even give you a hand with the gallery, if needed. Cheers. Adam (talk) 02:41, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

re:the blues

Hi. Yeh I actually went to the Blue Mountains a few months back. Just about all the pictures in that article are mine. Even though some of them look like single shots they are infact panorama's. The pulpit rock photo just under the intro is a pano made of about 5 to 10 portraits. If you look at the wind errosion cave photo that is actually a 10 photo stitch. The Neates Glen Photo would have to be about 6 to 10 and the photo taken from evens lookout is three over lapping portraits. Have you had a look at the Blue Mountains National Park article. I added a panorama that takes in the entire area around Pulpit rock, nice and wide shot but has a bad shadow accross the bottom of it.

I would mind going back to take a few more later on but possible with a more expensive camera. I wouldn't mind getting into the HDR photography but haven't quite figured it out. I have got all the softwhere installed onto my computer but am still having trouble. Anyway my work lunchbreak is over and I will have to end it hear. I will get back to you with more later on. Hello, Sardaka. You have new messages at Mvjs's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
Sardaka you might want to go to Lawson in the Blue Mountains at some stage soon. The RTA is due to demolish all the shops and the Community Hall (Mechanics Institute) along the Great Western Highway and some quite unique heritage will be lost. I'm not sure when this is happening but it will be in the near future. JRG (talk) 04:44, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Govetts leap

edit

Hi there. I haven't actually been to Govetts leap for quite some time but the last time I went I did go to Evens lookout which isn't to far off. I believe the view from there is pretty much the same. With the panoramas, well I think from now on I may go for more of a portrait style or at least a square shaped photo. With the landscaped panos, well I think they don't quite fit all that well into articles. What I try to do now is take several overlapping portrait style photos with the camera on a vertical tilt. This way you get more width and more height as well, like the photo that I have placed above of Bondi. That photo is several portraits all overlapping each other. I have also left a message on the Blue Mountains talk page for you. Also sorry for the late reply, I have had other things stressing me out. Cheers Adam (talk) 22:03, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

This is the other half of the photo of Pulpit rock that is already in the Blue Mountains article. You have probably seen it.Its a real shame about that shadow, I managed to remove some of it in photo shop. If I go there again I will go there earlier and try not to take in the handrail as wellAdam (talk) 01:49, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Here is a Blue mnts panorama

Hi, I actaully know about the railing being a problem but when you are actually there the place looks so good that you don't think about that sort of thing, well atleast I didn't, next time I'll know better. I might go there again just to take better shots from that same point and this time without the handrail. With the common's gallery well every time I upload a photo I categorize it and this automatically places the image in a commons gallery. How about the Blue Mountains navagation box. Instead of having a list in one article you could have a navagation box that is in every article linking all the Blue mountains articls to each other. This would allow for all see also lists to be removed and help all people that are interested in the Blue Mountains to find the articles that they need find or never thougn existed. You must do a lot of travelling trying to get to all these different place for photographs, must cost a lot in petrol. Adam (talk) 22:05, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

re:Navagation bar

edit

The navigation bar or box or template or whatever you would want to call it is really simple, you only have to create one page for the template, then after that has been created you simply copy and paste {{Template:Blue Mountains topics}} into every article that is in the template. If you want to update the template you only have to make the edit once in the template page, after you do this it updates in every other page that it is in automatically. So after the nav bar is in all the articles that you wish it to be in you will only have to edit the navigation box template page. I hope this makes sense. Also you said that you wanted a page as a list, well the navigation box is a page itself, so you have got you list of Blue mountains articles in its own seperate page and in every other page at the same time. This is a good way to increase the amount of hits per article per month. I found that when the Tourism in Sydney article was in a World tourism template for all the tourism articles it was receiving about 3500 hits per month. Once the article was removed from the template this dropped to about two thousand hits per month. I will start the template for you and if you want you could add the article links into it and I will give you a hand with the formatting of it. Adam (talk) 09:25, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Blue Mountains topics (created)
edit

Hi I have just started the template with a few articles in it. Maybe we could add the links to the articles together, I would need some advice on what to add and if you need a hand with adding links and how to do, just ask or even give me a list or point me in the right direction.
Here is the beginning of Template:Blue Moutains Topics.

No I don't think it will be. I think a good idea would be to add all the links to the template. Try to add in alphabetical order. I will have to fix up what I have done as well. After you have added so many links into the template, you could then use the template to navagate to each article whilst copying the link into that article, after you save you click the link next to it and do it all over again. But don't copy the entire template but only what I have shown you above in bold should be copy and pasted. If you add some links I'll add the template into some of those articles Adam (talk) 13:37, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
With the dot I just copy and past the brackets with the dot every time, I will have a look at the list Adam (talk) 13:47, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can see you have added the title for the group 'Vally's'. Nothing will actually show up until you start adding links to (|list4 =). Try adding one link to this and then it will show up in the nav box Adam (talk) 13:50, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not quite sure what happened there. You might have to leave out the {{}} for the last link Adam (talk) 13:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Don't let that scare you off bro Adam (talk) 14:00, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Blue Mountains dab

edit

In your last edit to Blue Mountains, you provided the edit summary moved list of Blue Mts articles back onto main list, where it logically belongs, and I can do this every day if you like. This statement is easily interpreted as article ownership and disruptive editing.

I can easily see your point of view: that the entry for List of Blue Mountains topics is best at the top of the section Mountain ranges. I can also see the point of view that it belongs in See also. The fact that you've reverted changes—several times—against your preferred version should tell you something. Unless you can find agreement for your view in disambiguation style, you should not be reverting consensus. —EncMstr (talk) 16:03, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Glenbrook Tunnel (1892) and Clarence Tunnel

edit

Hello. I have just been informed of the article creation of Glenbrook Tunnel (1892) and Clarence Tunnel. These tunnels have been used as chemical weapon (phosgene and mustard gas) stockpiles during World War II. The author of these article want's to know if photos can be provided for these. I know you get around up that way a fair bit so I thought you would have been past these places. If not can you tell me where to go and how to get in. Archive shots

edit

Have you seen the archive shots that have been donated by the state library? Tons of stuff you could probably use: [10] I see you're having problems with deletion nominations. So am I. One of my articles -- actually a list of Blue Mts articles -- has been nominated for deletion. Would you like to take a look and maybe add an opinion? There's a link at the bottom of my talk page. I'll have a look at yours while I'm here. Sardaka (talk) 11:13, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Sardaka. I'll see what I can do about both. I'll be away for a while, so I might not be able to act quickly. Have you thought about creating a `Blue Mountains articles` Category and adding it to the bottom of all the aricles, as a way to list all the articles? List of Blue Mountains articles, a page you substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/List of Blue Mountains articles and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of List of Blue Mountains articles during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Photo Request & Thanks

edit

In your travels - can you get photos of the Royal Rehab Centre at Ryde/Putney? They are going to pull most of it down in a couple of months and build housing on the vacant land, so it would be good to get some shots of the land?

Also any of the Sydney wharves that haven't been done.

I'm retiring from Wikipedia for the moment (see AWNB) but I may be back at some stage to edit geography and rail articles again. Thanks for your good work and your support and particularly for your help with photographs. JRG (talk) 06:06, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Edmund Blacket

edit

I just reverted your correction, and I need to explain why, as you presumably didn't understand, or else you wouldn't have changed it. When you see the word [sic] written after any name, or any quotation it means "such as it is". In other words, it is being quoted accurately.

The statement said that Blacket was highly regarded by the Blackett [sic] family. What the [sic] tells you is- this is how they spell their name, regardless of how it is spelt, elsewhere in the article. The paragraph was actually written by a member of the Blackett (two ts) family.

Anytime you find a quotation that has a very strange word, antiquated spelling, bad grammar or an obvious error of fact- if it happens to have [sic] after it, then don't change a single letter of it, unless you have tracked it to its original source first.

Amandajm (talk) 11:07, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

[sic] is most often used following a quoataion, but not necessarily. In this case, the spelling irregularity is not part of a quotation. It's simply the same name spelt a different way. If you continue to read the article, you will find a footnote explaining it. I notice that another editor has now linked the name to a page that shows it can be spelt two ways. Do you know if an expert can tell if a shot's been altered?

Sardaka (talk) 08:20, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's pretty easy to fake things these days so it's hard to trust the authenticity of anything. I'm sure an expert can tell if a photo has been altered but it gets harder and harder to prove anything for sure. Sorry, I don't know enough about it myself to tell you one way or another. Hi

I noticed that you have added a few see also lists to article with the above mentioned article as a link. if you have a close look at the template that I made up you will notice that I have linked your article at the top of the template, in the header of it. There is probably not need to the see also. The idea of the template is to remove list like these. :-Adam (talk) 09:02, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeh you could do that if you want and then change the header back to the main article. Also, just got back from Watsons bay. I plan on replacing some of my old photos. Boom net winch house and watsons again

edit

The boom net winch house is at these coords , [12]. Hopefully this link should lead you directly to the winch house foundation, the exact spot. Also with the wich house foundations photo do you think the clouds at the top of the image look unusual. Also I have another photo of the same thing where that obelisk was struck by lightning as I was taking the photo but I haven't uploaded yet. I also fear that that photo will not be excepted into articles on the grounds that it may be fake, but it does look kind of cool :-Adam (talk) 23:14, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Did you know that there is also a sealed bunker on that point just right of the boom net winch house foundations. Under the the hill or even under the heritage house that is on top of the hill. If you check out the article for the boom net you will see that I have taken a picture of the entrance to it. Watsons bay is filled with a whole heap of under fortresses. Even in placed that you wouldn't expect. Have you seen or heard of the signal hill battery on old south head road near the second lighthouse (singnal hill lighthouse). If you go to that park you can actually look at the stair case leading down into the underground bunker. The stair go down about two stories or so but unfortunately the doors are welded shut. The doors have been left slightly open so you can look down the stairs. If you have a look at the google map you will see the old gun emplacements. Also on the google map have a look at the navy base. You will see the remains of an old fort. Check it out. :-Adam (talk) 23:57, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

just noticed that a few guys seem to be unhappy with your uploads to COM. Remember, that ency-titanic is R.E_A.L.L.Y a serious one [as some friend of mine noticed, a while ago; he's meanwhile dead, due to age ;]

To be more serious: YES, it is highly encouraged to categorize your uploads. Unless you do it, someone else would feel obliged to do so, or some bot would pass by and "stamp" it. For the lastone of your uploads marked by bot (as of 11:22, 21 December 2008 (UTC)), which was some church in NSW, you might have chosen Category:Churches in Australia or a more appropriate sub-category of thatone.

Remember, BOTs are machines, which are helpful quite often, but never would read your note that you'd prefer to be contacted, e.g. on enWP, or wherever. There's a feature on COM / your preferences where you can demand being sent email in case someone/anybot edits your talk page. I'd suggest to activate it (in case you were not yet aware of it).

I did contact you because it seems that you're able to read+write [which does not seem to be the case with any-and-all contributors to WP ;]], and similar might apply to myself.

Best, &happy editing, Wolfgang (talk) 11:22, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

In regards to your complaint on WP:ANI, I've taken the liberty of helping you out. The offending post on your Commons talk page has been undone, and User:Pixelcounter has been given a warning. No need for a report to the admins unless he continues to be nasty, in which case you can find help at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard. Happy editing. To be honest, Commons is a lot more...forgiving in handing out blocks, probably because it's only a very small problem over there. He specifically stopped cursing, so he knows he'll get blocked for the next offense. This species of editor is called the troll. What he's doing now is the old "hold your finger 1 millimeter from your brother's face and loudly yell 'I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you!'". I removed all his posts on your page again. Don't even talk to him and he'll get bored like a little kid and go away. I'm still watching him. Bullzeye (Ring for Service) 16:01, 25 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of List of Blue Mountains articles

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of Blue Mountains articles, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

This content is already in the categories. This is doubling up

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Dimadozen (talk) 08:24, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Authors cannot remove prod templates. Also there is a message on my talk page for you. Dimadozen (talk) 22:37, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of List of Blue Mountains articles

edit

A tag has been placed on List of Blue Mountains articles, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. Dimadozen (talk) 22:58, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mass photo deletions

edit

Sardaka, You may have noticed by now that there is a new user (PoorPhotoremovalist) whose sole purpose, it seems, is to delete photos from Sydney articles and enlarge the size of a few remaining ones. I have explained on their talk page, the reason for keeping photos at standard size and also asked them to reconsider all these deletions. At the very least, the articles need to be linked to commons page and the photos need to be categorised so that they appear on that page. I suspect they may be a sockpuppet but I can't prove it yet.

I have no problem with photos being updated with better quality prints but these mass deletions don't seem justified. I want to make sure that the old photos are at least still be available in wikimedia commons but this new editor does not seem to care about that. My reverts are just being reverted again with the comment that nobody else is complaining (Miranda). Adam has also been doing some reverts but it's hard to keep up. What do you think?J Bar (talk) 22:41, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just to chime in: I'm not sure about the sockpuppet allegation, but I'm not happy with what, judging by the name, seems to be a single purpose account. In principle, I don't find deletion a very helpful purpose if that's all one does. Granted, I do think some of these articles have too many images cluttering up the article. No comment on the merit of the deletions yet. I guess it would be best to just talk it over.--Atlan (talk) 12:25, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for telling me about this business. I'll follow it up as soon as I get a bit of time. Might be a case for RfC. Who is Miranda?Sardaka (talk) 10:10, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just had a look and left a message on his talk page. Can you mention some specific pages I can look at?Sardaka (talk) 10:53, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I've reverted or partly reverted most of his edits, so you'd have to go back and look at the history of edits. Looks like he's taken the advice and may not continue to delete until wikimedia commons links are created first, if the comments in kurnell talk page are anything to go by. If you have a look at some of the first edits you will see how brutal they are/were. Kurnell, New South Wales, Cronulla, New South Wales, Miranda, New South Wales, Surry Hills, New South Wales. Cheers. J Bar (talk) 22:54, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Categories

edit

You might have noticed that when you add photos to commons now, they insist that you add a category or you get notified by email to do so. For all my latest uploads I have been including a category with the suburb name, so that way we can build a comprehensivecategory for each suburb. That way we can have a commons link in every article that features all the photos ever uploaded and we won't lose the links, even if other editors decide to delete photos from articles. I added Category:Mascot, New South Wales to your photo Mascot6.JPG, as well as altered the category to the existing Category:Churches in Australia and added some other existing categories. Can you please add the suburb categories to photos that you upload? Adam has created a lot of the categories but if they don't exist, they're easy to create. J Bar (talk) 21:32, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sardaka. Here is a description on how to add hot cat to you list of tools on Commons. I will get back to you with a further description later on. I am just in my lunch break. Cheers
File:How to use hot cat.jpg

Categories

edit

These categories are a bit of a mystery. When I get an email saying a cat is needed, I look at the image page and there's already a cat on it. Then I upload a shot with a cat, and when I look at the page there's no cat on it. However, I'll follow your suggestion about the suburbs cats. Am doing South Coogee now, which seems to have no cat at the moment. PS You sure get hassled by some idiots, by the looks of it. Sardaka (talk) 09:29, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

No worries Sardaka. It's only one idiot but he keeps coming back with different sock puppets and uses heaps of different IP addresses. He's just a persistent vandal and pest. He has a grudge because I reverted a lot of his vandalism on suburbs articles but he doesn't realise I just revert all vandalism on all suburb articles. I've been able to make a link between many of his created users and IP addresses with vandalism on the St George Christian School article. I suspect he's a student at that school. Hunter Baillie Church

edit

Would you be terribly upset if I replaced the old shot of the Hunter Baillie church? It's pretty black with shadows. I was up there this arvo and was lucky to get some decent light on the place.

Went there to get a shot of community church, but there's not much to photograph. Surrounded with pink tarp-type stuff while being renovated. Not much to look at anyway.
